Southern Belle Insults #4

Keri on the Loose

Rate this book
There’s a bold new Janet in town. Let Lady Miss Jacqueline spell it out for F-I-E-R-C-E. But there’s a lesson to be learned in this fabulously off-the-wall short story about life on the edge.

After her latest life-altering wig switch, Janet slips into leather leggings, quits her job, goes full advance on her barista crush, and makes a career commitment to her bestie, Candace. The follow-through? Not pretty. With guilt and betrayal hanging over her head (not to mention that dangerous, if fetching, wig), Janet must comb out the mess she’s made. And there’s only one way to do it.

Keri on the Loose by Keke Palmer with Jasmine Guillory is part of Southern Belle Insults, a fiercely funny series of short stories set in the fully realized world of Keke’s viral phenomenon. Take Lady Miss Jacqueline’s read or listen to them at once, without stopping, the whole way through. You’re welcome.

So now that I know how things are happening, the story has gotten better.
I may not like each person Janet turns into, but I am getting how it is helping to give her a confidence boost like no other, and in this case, even humble her.
She learns a lot about herself in this one, and you learn that all of these novellas really make more sense together at the end.
I actually look forward to the next and last story. I want to know how Janet settles into her newfound self.

Everything is coming together greatly for our FMC. She is learning more and more about herself coming out of her proverbial shell as you could say.. I’m still really enjoying the story… It seems to encourage you to want to indulge more and more from the writing with each book.. Great writing

This short which I picked up on Prime Reading introduces us to Janet. A woman, working in an office building that has let herself fade into the background. But when she stumbles into a wig shop, Janet's life is about to get a whole lot more exciting.

Probably my favorite in the collection, Keri had a Rihanna vibe that I liked and I felt this was the book where Janet goes through the most growth.

Poor drab and boring Janet tries on the dangerous Keri wig from the magical wig shop and has the time of her life with her new best friend Candace. But when she misses an important event for Candace and cuts short her dream date with barista Pete, she realizes she's become self-centered, selfish and unkind. It means another trip to see Rahdswee to find a better wig...next time it will be the one called Sophie...

Oh, I thought more along the lines of Keri Hilson, but okay sure let's go with Rihanna. This one gave me the most memorable time and Miss Lady Jacqueline's input added to the story.

This next book in the collection sounds like I'll have a good time with Sophie.

Janet's got a new wig! This time she's Keri, a confident but sorta selfish bad-ass who's not at all ashamed to call people "Macabroni and cheese" (And I'm for sure gonna start saying that now).

This is my favorite one so far! Keri was a little selfish, but I appreciated the zest for life she brought to Janet. Lady Miss and her scandalous side recollections had me laughing out loud.

Each story is just so freaking entertaining because why wouldn't someone have multiple personalities depending on the wig they are wearing?!?!

Jesus take the wheel. The fourth book in this mini series ups the ante for Janet, who has a new wig that lets her persona Keri take over, ignoring the warning that Keri can cause some problems.

One reoccurring theme that I appreciate in the series is the wigs and how they play a role for Black Women - in particular, all of the non Black characters in the series can’t tell that under the wig it’s Janet. Only two characters (Candace and Pete, both Black) are able to tell that Janet is the same person, just changing the wigs around on a rotational basis.

The ending was Brilliant

Keke is brilliant. It took for her to transform into Sophie. Her voice was almost unrecognizable. I enjoyed how Keri got what she wanted on her career but Kerri went a little to far and almost lost ones that she cared for. Again the persona was epic but a bit weird to me.🤣 I thought Keri was going to be like a home girl but Keri was kind of like a rocker chic. She was a free spirit. Great performance.

GOOD. FOR. KERI. She’s given Janet a little more of what she deserves, BUT a with a bit of selfishness on the side… Oops! Hopefully Sophie can help with some needed softness! (I do hope Janet can somehow culminate all of this for herself & just be Janet)

I can’t really pin down Keri‘s character? She was like a bad girl bro almost, but I do appreciate how we are hearing more about Janet as the stories go on and how the wigs are affecting her development

Self-centered much?

Another wig another personality. Janet reveals her secret to Candace and in the process takes on Keri. Though she's warned that Keri might be too much for her to handle, she dives right in. Soon she's grabbing life by the horns, but she may permanently damage all her relationships in the process.

Keri is my least favorite so far. Each of these personalities is so over the top, but this is by far the most selfish of them. Ultimately I imagine we're being led to understand that life needs balance - be independent but kind, authentic but don't be afraid to stretch out of your comfort zone. The wigs represent facets of Janet's personality that she'll eventually have to cobble together into a whole person. I look forward to the eventual payoff.

"Take Lady Miss Jacqueline's advice: read or listen to them at once, without stopping, the whole way through. You're welcome."

Synopsis: Main character Janet Williams is 50 shades of beige and boring, her work life stale, her wardrobe an abomination to fashion, her love life nonexistent, but her inner voice, Lady Miss Jacqueline is magical, courageous, fabulous - but stuck inside. This 5 part Amazon mini-book/audible series takes us through the 5 personalities of Janet, as told through her wigs! In the first episode we meet and get to know boring Janet, and are introduced to Rahdswee's wig shop. Episode 2 takes you through Janet's life, as she wears the OVER-THE-TOP Lady Miss wig and quickly rises to the top of her work. Episode 3 introduces the long golden Chelsea wig and her gregarious personality as she finds success at work, but struggles with adventure and purpose. Episode 4 is from the edgy short haired wig of the Keke personality, who does not lack ADVENTURE, but fails at being egotistical, which threatens all her relationships. In Episode 5, we find Janet as long beautiful/fairytale, sweet Sophie wig, who is whimsical and confident. Janet is positively beaming, until the unthinkable happens. Can she find balance through these wigs and come out on top, breaking the cycle of boring and bland? Written by Keke Palmer with Rom Com Queen Jasmine Guillroy as part of the Southern Belle Insults Series, this mini-series kept me on my toes.

Personal Review on Southern Belle Insults #1-5: 3.5 Stars

These had me from the start, the audible of Keke Palmer as Lady Miss is absolutely divine and I was enamored from her first sentence. These are very short stories and easy to listen to and read. The struggle of most women to be the best that they can be - and balance work/home/personal life. I like how this was released as a mini series as it was perfect for reading one each night before bed. It was light, airy, and funny - so easy to cheer for the main character Janet.

XO, Lady Miss

Keri is a totally different than other females.

Keri on the Loose (Southern Belle Insults Book 4) by KeKe Palmer is a lovely and beautiful short story. Once again, KeKe brings more heat for this series.

Janet is in a love with different wigs. From book 1: she was shy and boring woman. She allows anyone taking over her ideas without her permission at work. She was afraid to speaking up to her crush. She didn’t have friends. Book 2: Miss Jacqueline was taking over Janet’s career. Jacqueline shows Janet how to be boss, classy and respectful. She taught Janet how to be fashionable at work and anywhere.
Book 3: Chelsea taught Janet how to be entertaining, supportive and caring woman. However, Keri teaches her how to be selfish, bad and feisty 😈.

I can’t wait to read the finale of this series.

A new wig, a new adventure. Keri is a bold one. She quits Janet’s job, takes Candance on a whirlwind trip to exclusive bars, and asks Peter out on a date. However, after a few days of fun Keri-Janet has trouble keeping commitments and heads back to Radswee for a way to clean up the mess.

This entry offers more of the same. It is starting to show the larger message about finding a balance in your life and the different ways one might imagine self-confidence, success, and fear in modern times. It’s predictable and only part of a story. Those who like Keke’s performance for the narration will continue to enjoy it; those you don’t, the same. Admittedly the accents and nicknames are easier to take this round. I find the narrative struggles some to show what parts are authentic to Janet and some readers are still put off by the unlikable or offensive undertones in the personas.

I feel like this novella had the most development for Janet since there's so much happening in just a couple of pages. We're finally seeing Janet make a move on Pete, the barista, and we see how her friendship with Candace is also developing. I will say that Keri was not a wig that I was suspecting, I truly thought that she would be a confident wig that would help Janet but her flaws was also something that I admired. There were things that probably went to far but I think that just shows that Keri and all these other wigs weren't meant to make Janet perfect. They have their own flaws and we can see how that hurts Janet in this novella.

By the end of this novella, I felt more excited to see what would happen in the last novella since I'm not sure how it will end for Janet. Also, how will her relationship with Pete end up like and Candace. Like I said, there's just so much that happened in this novella which made me enjoy it.

Ms. Keri is WILD!

Keri on The Loose, book 4 of the Southern Belle Insults series is a reminder that one should be careful what they wish for because they just may get it.

At the conclusion of book 4, Janet hangs up her previous wig for Keri. With Keri, she is able to take a step into her destiny by quitting her job, going to all of the lavish parties she can muster, asking Peter out and going on a first date, and encouraging her friend Candace to pursue her dreams as an artist. Just as Janet begins to embrace this new her, she begins to make choices that will remind her of the wig owners heed about Keri. Will she have the courage to right her wrongs before it’s too late?

This was a really good addition to the series. I can’t wait to see what happens in the finale after Janet is forced to humble herself and reconsider what matters most.
