As someone who does not even have a Tiktok account and no social media whatsoever, maybe I shouldn’t even be writing this review. BUT this is a cookbook of which I have thousands, so there.

Because Tiktok is by its nature fast-moving, it’s almost pointless to produce a cookbook for it. The trends come and go and though there are many creators, only 40 are featured. And some of these creators appear more than once. Why not feature more creators with one recipe each? And For a visual medium, it’s ridiculous that some of the recipes don’t even have a picture.

As a cookbook lover, this is a disappointing book, and I am not even encouraged to cook from it. And no, that intro by chef Gordon Ramsay and his daughter isn’t enough to save this book from the trash bin.

This cookbook is such bullshit. Here's why:

-If you're going to peddle this as a cookbook from TikTok creators, maybe not have Giada as one of the recipe contributors? You know, cuz she's a Food Network celebrity, not a TikTok creator?

-The recipes bounce from so stupidly easy you have to wonder why they're in a cookbook, to so painstaking and tedious that I feel like this is something a professional chef would publish in their own cookbook.

-Going off of that, there were so many recipes in here that you can find in so many other cookbooks that it felt insulting. Coffee cake? Peanut butter chocolate chip cookies? You can find those in practically every dessert cookbook, why is it in here?

-This sounds nitpicky but I don't care-the picture quality for the food was atrocious. It was so oversaturated and bright that most of the food either looked unappetizing or I couldn't even tell what it was.

-Finally, do the TikTok creators or the people who made this cookbook grasp that the general demographic who uses TikTok can't afford to make most of this shit? Some of these recipes have two pages worth of ingredients, and even the shorter ones require a lot of ingredients that are either a) not going to be easy to find for most folks and b) really expensive for 99% of the people who use this fucking app. Maybe we could have included recipes that were appetizing and actually affordable? What a shocking concept!

Anyway, this cookbook sucks (to the shock and amazement of absolutely no one) and I wouldn't waste money. I would sooner cook recipes I found on Pinterest before trying any of this shit.

I am an old (waves in geriatric millennial) so I doubt I’m the target audience for this book. Despite that, as the boomers who destroyed things when I was a kid, I guess I am now, in turn, destroying things today’s kids like, such as TikTok. While I’ve never posted any videos of my own, I do have an account and have been known to waste hours on my FYP.

I’m also a huge fan of the feta pasta recipe, so OFC I had to check out this title from the library.

While the ratio of pictures to recipes was solid enough, the overall formatting of the book grated on me. I guess this means I’m one step away from shouting “GET OFF MY LAWN!” at the neighborhood kids. There were a few recipes I’d try (the feta pasta soup, for example, because us old farts LIKE WHAT WE LIKE STOP QUESTIONING US YOU ANNOYING WHIPPER SNAPPERS) but overall, meh*.

*I think that is what kids nowadays say whenever, in the immortal words of a movie from my generation, they’re not overwhelmed or underwhelmed, they’re just whelmed. Like you can be in Europe.

Pretty neat! Cool that even Gordon Ramsay has jumped on the bandwagon. My only issue is that there were a lot of creators that had more than one recipe. Rather than have the same creators repeated, let's spread the joy. There are sooooo many awesome TikTok "chefs" on the platform, let's give them a chance, too!

The title and cover enticed me when I spotted these on the library shelf, but I ended up finding myself quite uninspired by this selection of recipes.

I went into this hopeful it would not be terrible, but sadly, my hopes were dashed.

If you must purchase or read this one, get the ebook version so you can click the links to watch the videos.

The recipes themselves were not particularly inspired, if you are vegan there were a couple of recipes you may like.

For a book about recipes delivered via a visual online platform, there is a surprising dearth of pictures of the finished dishes.

Surprisingly, I didn't like this cookbook very much. I found it scattered, and I wasn't interested in many of the recipes. I liked the idea of showing the best of Tiktok cooking.

TikTok.

If you ask me, it's the single most important piece of media to influence and inspire amateur chefs and foodies in the last 5 years. In the 80s, it was PBS cooking shows. The 90s and 2000s, it was Food Network. The 2010s was the decade of abrasive chefs like Anthony Bourdain and Gordon Ramsay. Today, if a student comes to me wanting to explore a new recipe, the idea usually came in the form of a video from TikTok.

Due to the apps questionable tracking methods of users data, I don't use TikTok. Plus my school blocks it. So if a student wants me to see something on the social media site, they usually have to show the video from their phones. So when I discovered this officially licensed cookbook over the summer, I jumped at the chance to buy it for my culinary classes.

The recipes are all from TikTok users. Add to it some cooking tips from professional chefs such as Blue Ginger's Ming Tsai. Throw in some useful cooking hacks from the TikTok tech team and include QR codes in order to access each recipe and you're as close to becoming a TikTok chef without being an official user of the site.

My students were very excited when I showed them this book. Some laughed, thinking it was absurd to buy a cookbook when I can get all the recipes for free on TikTok. But just about everyone I shred this book with was enthusiastic to use this new resource.

I decided to incorporate this cookbook into my lesson plans under the unit for recipe development as well as the unit for pricing and budgeting. Incorporating social media technology into a culinary business was also explored. We tested out several recipes ranging from a cake recipe that only called for ice cream and flour to a lasagna noodles recipe that called packs of ramen noodles.

My students were very surprised at how the ice cream cake turned out. But I explained to them that ice cream with it's milk, fat, sugar and eggs has everything else you need to make a cake with in addition to the other ingredient of flour. So if you are in a pinch or can't afford all the ingredients that a cake recipe calls for, you can make a semi-decent cake alternative similar to a pound cake loaf consistency.

The reaction to the ramen lasagna was mixed. Some folks liked it. Others abhorred it. All wanted to know why someone would use ramen noodles to make a lasagna. I explained that a lot of users on TikTok are Millennials and Gen Zers on a budget. You can buy 4 packs of ramen for almost as much as 1 pound of lasagna noodles - or cheaper. Frugal cooking calls for creative substitutions and as a chef who's known for utilizing items about to go bad or expire in creative and affordable ways, it's one thing that I really admire about the TikTok community.

We also explored food trends and how recipe ideas go viral by making one of the foods that put TikTok on the culinary map: cloud bread. Essentially egg whites, baking soda, some sort of dairy and of course food coloring, these tie-dyed little cakes are like eating a eggy little cloud. We also learned that with something as simple as cloud bread, it's really easy to mess it up. The easiest recipes usually are.

There's a bunch of recipes that I personally hope to explore. Full of quirky and creative ideas that can also be rather affordable, I think I found a great modern resource for my culinary students; that's also a book! Sure, my students could use the app on their phone. But one problem I noticed with TikTok is that nothing is written down. Unless you follow the video precisely and can remember all the steps, my students often get lost and tend to forget something important. So while the app is free, having everything collected in a book that can easily be photocopied and shared with multiple cooking teams is a handy tool to help bring a relatable culinary resource safely into my classroom without breaking the confidentiality of anyone's online presence.

Plus a portion of the sale of this cookbook benefits No Kid Hungry; a very worthwhile cause that I support and personally battle every single day within my school's struggling community.

As cookbooks go this one was so-so.

Gordon Ramsay had a hand in writing the intro....and I have to admit I skipped right over that intro and everything else to get to the recipes. No idea what he said. lol I aslo have to confess to skipping a lot of the creator write-ups....cause I don't really care. I did notice that several creators had multiple entries, which makes me wonder, did people have to submit recipes? Or did Tiktok just steal them to make a buck? And why no famous foodies?

Anyway...

Is there anything in here I would cook (that I don't already have a recipe for)? That'd be a no. I have a baking book for cookies and coffee cake and whatever other kind of cake. While some of them were interesting, I wouldn't go out of my way to find the ingredients. In fact, some of the recipes were so long, the ingredient lists spanned two pages!

Which brings me to my next small grievance, the formatting. I don't like it when you have to flip pages back and forth in order to go through a complete recipe. It may just be me, but I like to have the book open to the recipe and just GO while making it. I don't like turning pages and having to turn back if I feel I missed something or whatever. I don't like the ingredients list not being all together. Cause I would never touch my book with hands that are preparing food. So I believe that if your recipe is two pages long, they should be two pages opposite each other so there is no page turning required. It's just a cleaner look and easier to read in my humble opinion.

I always lose myself in watching videos on Tiktok and the foodie ones are always the best!

As Seen on Tiktok has some great recipes from some great food creators, and some I'm definitely going to be trying over time.

Alongside the recipes there are tips, life hacks, fyi's and 'I was today old' moments.

Each recipe is clearly labeled whether it's suitable for vegetarians and comes with an image of the finished dish.

I particularly liked the fact that each recipe also comes with a link to the creators Tiktok page too.

My must trys include - Pesto Egg Toast, Biscuit Pot Pie, Sweet Chilli Smashed Sprouts and Crispy Baklava Rolls.

I dont know what I expected not gonna lie. It gets a 1 purely because it featured Newt and I like him so he deserves credit.

The recipes aren't the "big big" tiktok ones I keep seeing, I've never seen half of these. Is that because I'm on the wrong side of tiktok? I don't know. Some of these recipes are mega complex for tiktok too so I'm sat here shocked.

I dont know how I feel about this but I love Newt so it gets a rating at least.

Disappointing. It was a cute idea but I was underwhelmed with the selection of recipes. I did read the electronic version so I was able to click on links but they rarely took you to that recipe so you had to search for it. The book did not paginate well on CloudLibrary and I constantly had to look back to find the title of a recipe at the bottom of the previous page.

Well, this was disappointing. If you’re looking for quick, delicious recipes from tik tok…this is not it. The majority of them required too many ingredients and were too time consuming. Wish there would’ve been more pictures too. Just skip it.

I generally rate a cookbook by how many recipes jump out at me that I want to make.

This one only came out with 1 that I found interesting enough to book mark.

And the links to TikTok did not work (and yes, I am actually tech savvy).

So I guess thats that.

Fair cookbook

Had a few good recipes. Nothing to write home about. A lot of the food did not sound good to me. This was a library rental. I'm glad I didn't buy it.
