Crimson Twill: Witch in the City

Rate this book
A little witch with a penchant for bright colors and bows has a surprising big-city shopping adventure in the first book of an illustrated series filled with offbeat charm.

Crimson Twill is a little witch, but you might not know it. She lives in the country and loves polka dots and puppies instead of pointy shoes and black dresses. She even wears a big bow on her hat—which is crimson, just like her name. Tonight, for the very first time, Crimson is riding on her mother’s broom all the way to New Wart City to go shopping at Broomingdale’s! The huge department store has everything a witch could itch for. For Crimson, each floor (hats! cats! brooms!) is a new adventure. But is Broomingdale’s ready for a witch as unique as Crimson? A rich and playful new world comes to life in the first book of this charming series.

I started reading Crimson Twill as a bedtime story for my toddler. We learned that Crimson is a witch unlike others. She likes to wear a polka dot dress, a hat with a bow, and giggles instead of cackle like other witches. Her mom is taking her to the city, a big department store called Broomingdales. She's excited because it's her first time. While there, she decided to browse around on her own because she doesn't want to buy the things her mom was planning to buy. She found a puppy in a cat store. The salesperson wanted to get rid of the puppy but Crimson saved it and eventually found its owner. She's off to another area looking for something to buy. In there she found a cleaning broom that doesn't belong there and saved it for another place who most needed it. As the night wore on, she realized she didn't buy anything but she found unexpected friendships.

A great chapter book story and fun illustrations!

This is short but the kids and I would do anything except pick it up. It's about a girl named Crimson Twill who goes to a store called Broomingdale's. She explores each floor and then participates in a fashion show. The point is do be yourself, regardless of what everyone else is doing. Good moral, but bad execution.

This book was great! I loved that the sweet little message wasn't super in your face but was surrounded by a fun adventure. The framing narrative of going somewhere bigger and new is fairly relatable while still being fantastical enough that kids will find joy in it. I certainly did!

Crimson is different from other witches. She doesn't want to wear a pointy hat; she wants a hat with a bow. She doesn't like black dresses; she wants a dress with pretty polka dots. When Crimson accompanies her mother to the department store, Broomingdale's, Crimson wants to shop for something unique that will reflect her own style. But she finds much more than she bargained for!

I loved this cute book! Crimson is so sweet and I loved that she is not afraid to be different. I thought the story was really positive and had good moral messages, but it was also just fun!

I liked the cute illustrations, but I felt like the art work was really dark. There are so many witches wearing black dresses, and there are lots of shadows in the background, so it made the art very dark. But the story is so light-hearted and fun, so it was an odd juxtaposition.

This book made me laugh, and I loved the hilarious writing style!

It was so interesting to find out about the world of the witches. I loved the world building with all the different types of brooms and styles of witch hats.

"...instead of having Nightmares, like witches were supposed to, Crimson dreamed."

What a cute witchy read for Halloween!

To be honest, I would read this year round. It was such a cute story of Crimson Twill, a young witch who doesn't quite fit the typical witch description. She loves to stand out and wears bright clothing that match her vibrant personality.

Her trip to New Wart City to visit Broomingdale's was a fun adventure! I had a great time reading this with my kids. We all loved the beautiful illustrations throughout the book and navigating our way through this unique shopping experience.

My favourite part was The Hat Floor. Crimson showed kindness and selflessness in this chapter and I find those such important qualities to share with my kids.

Overall, we loved this quick, fun debut to a new series and look forward to the next installment!

Thank you to Candlewick Press for sending this my way.

I am enchanted by this chapter book. It's the story of an oddball witch who travels with her mother to the city of New Warts to shop at Broomingdales.
If you haven't figured out that this book is full of delightful puns, mostly there, I am sure, to entertain parents, then read that second sentence again.
The main message of this little story is to be yourself, help out when you can, and enjoy making new friends. Those are pretty good guidelines for witches of all ages.

Engaging read, but I like my witches a bit more willing to go dark. But I remember the excitement of going to a big department store.

Crimson Twill is a young witch who prefers to stand out from the rest. No "pointy stuff" for her, thank you very much. She wears polka dots, gum boots, and sports a crimson hat with a bow. When her mother decides to take her to Broomingdale's (only the best and largest superstore for all things witches itch for!) she's ecstatic and can't wait to start shopping. But as she explores the various floors, rescues a pup and a wayward broom, she realizes she's still not found anything to buy for herself. As the hour grows late and she meets up with her mother at the Moonlight cafe, Crimson Twill discovers that she has indeed "found '' much of what she really needs. George's clever play on words is delightful and had me chuckling all the way through this story of friendship and generosity. Broomingdale, in New Wart City, is a place I would love to visit and so would readers who are sure to fall in love with Crimson, Mauve, and Pepper. A charming new world with the most loveable and fun characters which will delight readers of any age!
Highly recommended.

Crimson Twill was a little witch. But you might not know it. She didn’t look like a typical little witch…Crimson didn’t act like a typical little witch, either. She giggled instead of cackled. She skipped instead of slunk around. And instead of having nightmares, like witches were supposed to, Crimson dreamed.”

The adorable and pun-tastically magical Crimson Twill: Witch in the City is a new series opener written by Kallie George and illustrated by Birgitta Sif. A lively and zippy illustrated chapter book, Crimson Twill: Witch in the City stars a puppy-loving, polka-dot wearing, friendly and helpful witch named Crimson. Crimson and her mother, who live in Cackle County (in the “deep dark woods” of the country) are preparing for a trip to Broomingdale’s- a huge and super popular mall way out in New Wart City! It’s the first big trip for Crimson and she cannot wait. What will it be like flying with her mom in heavy broom traffic? What kinds of goodies will Broomingdale’s special Moonlight Café have? What special treat will Crimson decide to buy for herself? As Crimson and her mom make their way to the mall, Crimson finds herself a bit overwhelmed. For a start, Crimson doesn’t seem to be wearing what a lot of other witches are wearing…and no one else seems to have a happy bow decorating their hat! Crimson travels from floor to floor (with the help of a chatty elevator), searching for something perfect: maybe a new broom? What about a new hat? Or maybe even a kitten; witches are supposed to love cats, right? As Crimson explores, she finds that nothing is quite turning out as she anticipated…but some things end up going even better than she could have hoped. Kallie George offers readers a boisterous and fun tale, full of puns, so wonderfully matched by Birgitta Sif’s sweet and charming illustrations. For readers looking for something gently spooky and whimsical (just in time for Halloween!), or for readers who like illustrated chapter books along the lines of series such as Isadora Moon, Amelia Fang, or Ghoulia, Crimson Twill: Witch in the City is a terrific pick. Look forward to more adventures from Crimson and her new friends Mauve and Wesley with Crimson Twill: Witch in the Country, set for summer 2023 release!

Crimson is a country witch who loves wearing her signature color and more flamboyant style. When her mother proposes a trip to the city to visit Broomingdale's department store, she explores the unique floors searching for the perfect thing to spend her money on. Along the way, she discovers some out of place things like a sweeping broom in the flying brooms, a puppy on the cat floor, and a colorful hat in the black hats. Can Crimson discover where these items might belong and will she ever find what she "needs."

This beginning chapter book would be of interest to new reader ages 7-9. Crimson is a fun character, and the story encourages self-acceptance, finding your strengths and friendships or making new friends. I would think that this would be a good series if they would like to continue the character's adventures.

What confused me though were the illustrations. While they are cute black and white drawings, there was some that did not take details in the text into consideration. The witches like their black clothes and pointy hats in the book and she gets made fun of her bright dress with polka dots in the text. The illustrations do show other witches in patterns before the fashion show, which confused me. It would have made more impact to see a dramatic change in the clothing style when the illustrations are in black and white. The author mentioned advertisements that Crimson saw on the way to the city and the illustration doesn't include them but has others that were not mentioned. Overall, it won't take enjoyment away from the book, but it did keep me from adding another star. New reader illustrations should reflect the text accurately so they can infer meaning to words.

I would recommend this book for purchase by elementary school and public libraries. I think the cover and theme are attractive to early readers.

Summary

Crimson Twill doesn’t follow what every other witch does, but instead moves to the beat of her own drum. She simply can’t wait to get to the big city and go shopping. She won’t be going to any old store either, she is going to the biggest department store in the world! Will it be all she dreamed it would be? Will she find anything in her style in a very spooky and witchy world? Will she find something even better?

The group shook their heads in disapproval, and then, with a sniff, they turned their backs and walked away. Crimson looked down at her outfit and felt something she’d never felt before: doubt.

PAGE 44 – CRIMSON TWILL: WITCH IN THE CITY

Review

My child (soon-to-be three year old) let me read this entire book to her in one sitting and can tell you what it was about. She was so interested! So needless to say, we are both fans of this one. This was a cute little story with a meaningful lesson behind it. I loved all of the play on words they used (Ex: “Vera Fang”). It was fun and I certainly believe it would be to an elementary aged child too. I admired the moral behind it: how some things are much better in your head than in reality, and how what other people think is “cool” shouldn’t change what you enjoy.

Conclusion

This book would be a great read for an elementary school aged child, especially during the fall season! It is cute, has a significant lesson with just enough witches to make it marvelous for a Halloween read. This book felt very nostalgic for me, it felt like the sweet innocent Halloween you’d have as a child. Before the blood, gore, and scary hogwash began. Therefore, even adults may find this book enjoyable for that purpose.

Crimson Twill is young witch, but you wouldn’t know by looking at her. She doesn’t wear black dresses or pointy shoes. She wears bright colored polka dots, a crimson hat with a bow to match her name and gum boots. She giggles, and skips and plays like all children instead of cackling and creeping around like witches are supposed to do.

Crimson is so excited when her mother announces they are going to New Wart City to shop at Broomingdale’s. Crimson has a few coins to spend and can’t wait to see what the store has to offer a young witch. After making plans to meet her mother later for the fashion show, Crimson sets off to explore on her own. She thinks she might find a new hat or a wand or even a broomstick, maybe even a pet cat?

Crimson visits each department and ends up with a lost little dog, a new friend and a sweeping broom, not a riding broom. Crimson runs to meet her mother at the fashion show.

The broom begins cleaning the floor (which is what brooms are supposed to do), but bumps into Crimson who drops her basket and Pepper the puppy bounds out of it into the crowd of witches. Running after Pepper, Crimson becomes the hit of the show! Other witches admire her fashion, photographers take her picture, and the crowd applauds thinking Crimson is modeling the newest designs.

Crimson Twill: Witch in the City is a captivating read with heart, friendship, bravery and a strong female protagonist who dares to be different and different sets Crimson apart.

Crimson Twill is a young witch who likes to be different by liking polka-dots and big bows on her clothes and wearing round boots instead of pointy shoes. She was even considering getting a puppy as a pet. These are all things witches don't usually do.

When her mom asks her to go to Broomingdales in New Wart City, Crimson is really excited! She’s heard that the store has everything that you can think of and she just happens to have some change saved up from her chores. When she gets to the store she finds out that it is huge and has a ton of items! However, when she goes to find certain items, she discovers that they don’t have as huge of a selection as she thought as they don’t have anything she is looking for.

Along the way throughout the store, Crimson finds other things rather than items to buy. She discovers a lost puppy, a broom that needs an owner, and a girl who also likes bows! What she thought was going to be an awful trip turned out to be an extraordinary one! Instead of finding things to buy, Crimson found new friends and helped people along the way!

I loved the book and look forward to reading both of the sequels! I love anything to do with witches and this was a fun and classic take on them, but it also felt fresh and new. I loved all the witch puns too! I enjoyed the artwork as well, which was really cute! I definitely recommend this book for anyone who enjoys witches and shopping and maybe even a fashion show!

Cute if a bit slight--only fifty pages. The premise is fun but, as my son noted, not much happens. Country witch Crimson Twill finally gets to go to a big department store in the city, shops around on different floors, has a moment of doubt when she realizes she doesn't quite fit in but . I just wanted... more (The Cat Floor was especially unfulfilling) Still, there were plenty of moments that had me smiling (including some of the little nods to real-world fashion, like Broomingdales in New Wort City where the famous Vera Fang will hold a fashion show). The illustrations had a little more spook than I was expecting but are overall cute and I think early elementary-aged readers looking for a not-scary witchy book would enjoy this.

I pre-ordered this book from Amazon since Kallie George is one of my children's favorite authors. We love the Magical Adoption Agency series and Heartwood Hotel.

Witches are not one of my favorite subjects so that may have colored my opinion of the book. Overall, it was sweet. I like the main character's personality and how proud she is of herself for being who she is and not necessarily "one of the crowd."

The book is full of puns which made me chuckle. I am not sure the intended audience, probably 2nd-3rd graders, will get the references.

Overall, I enjoyed the book and think Crimson Twill will make for a good series.

Crimson Twill isn’t your typical witch. She likes polka dot dresses, rubber boots and a bow on her crimson-coloured witch hat. But she is still full of magic. Today is the day she’s been waiting for a long time. She gets to go to the big city and the biggest witch department store in the whole world. But everything turns out differently than expected.

Crimson is a very kind little witch who puts other’s needs before her own. And what, at first, causes her a little hardship ends up being the best souvenir of all: friends.

This quick chapter book teaches about kindness and making friends and is perfect for kids who love witches.

Crimson, a sweet little witch, who is not afraid to be big, bright and splashy, teaches us all that it is ok to be different and through her bravery, she teaches everyone how to add some color, fun and definitely bows into their lives. Crimson is kind, refreshing and confident. The perfect role model for your budding witch…er child. I love the funny word play tying it to the Big Apple. I still remember my first time shopping with my mom on 5th Avenue and going to Macys, Bloomingdales and FAO Schwartz. Parents will get a kick out of this too.

Just right for this month of Halloween, a cute story about a witch with all the 'witchy' vocabulary to smile about. This young witch, Crimson, follows a different path. She doesn't wear a black hat, nor pointy shoes, and loves her polka dot dress instead of the usual black like everyone else. Instead of cackling, she giggles; instead of nightmares, she dreams! It's a clever story that supports being oneself regardless of the push to be like all the others.

Crimson Twill is a cleverly written book about a witch in the city. Crimson visits Broomingdales and purchases things for being a witch. The book has interesting references and clever wording that will appeal a grade 3-4 elementary audience. The book has black and white illustrations that will keep the reader interested in the text. The binding and board are not really very strong for a school library.

Pictures on nearly every spread, this Early Chapter book provides a fun friendship adventure with a non-conformist witch protagonist. There are more than a sprinkling of what our 2nd grade teacher calls "juicy" words, and some of the puns may go over young readers' heads (such as Crimson's favorite part of visiting her Aunt Mildew at the publishing company: meeting her favorite ghost writer); nonetheless, the plot is simple, with 3 main events, resulting in two new friends for Crimson.

This is an adorable and fantastical chapter book series with an endearing and unique little witch who learns important lessons and some self discovery in her adventures! I think it is well written and contains some adorable illustrations. I think this would be a fun book to read aloud with a young child! I would’ve loved the series as a witch obsessed kid (who obviously still has not grown out of that obsession! :)

so cute!! Crimson Twill is a young witchling visiting New Wart city metropolitan Mall Broomsdale with her mom, she travel the mall alone wishing to buy things she'd never dreamed of in her hometown Cackle County but find all sorts of things money couldn't buy, that is, friends and memorable experience, I like it, short but relaxing and adventurous, just right for anyone who likes spooky tropes in their MG and just want a break from a long reading, kudos!

Crimson is a unique young witch. She prefers polka dots to pure black clothing. She keeps her hair neatly in braids and isn't interested in being mean. She and her mom head to the city for a shopping trip. Several amusing adventures take place while she explores the store. In the end, though she did not buy anything, she came away with something more precious - two new friends.

Such a cute story following Crimson Twill on her adventures in the witchy store, Broomingdales!
