Life coach Cat Cooper and her best friend Gilley can’t wait to take a long vacation from low-key East Hampton. There’s just one more item left on their planning checklist: stopping a killer . . .
With Gilley heartbroken over the collapse of his marriage, Cat has the perfect remedy—a three-week-long getaway to Italy. But before the duo can pack their bags and sip prosecco on the sunny riviera, they first must help a troubled client carve out a fresh start of her own. Wealthy Scarlet Rubi desperately seeks a greater purpose and immediate distance from her toxic descendants. The urgency of the situation isn’t quite so clear until Scarlet takes healthy steps towards progress, only to turn up dead . . .
The matriarch of a wealthy family has been murdered in her home after finding a new lease on life. Cat’s suspicions deepen when she discovers Scarlet was set on cutting off her children and grandchildren, each one more money-hungry and dependent on financial support than the last. As Cat and Gilley investigate a slew of sketchy alibis and concrete motives from the corrupt Rubi clan while preparing to leave the East End for Europe, they soon realize the question isn’t who had a deadly vendetta against Scarlet—it’s who didn’t?
Victoria Laurie is the New York Times bestselling author of 32 books and counting. Over the past 16 years Victoria has created several series and a few stand-alone novels. Her mystery series include: The Psychic Eye Mysteries, The Life Coach Mysteries, and The Ghost Hunter Mysteries. She's also the author of two YA books, When and Forever Again, as well as a middle-grade series called The Oracles of Delphi Keep.
Currently, Victoria is working on the 17th book in both the Psychic Eye Mysteries and the 3rd book in the Life Coach Mysteries, along with also working to produce a brand NEW series called Spellbound set for release winter/spring 2020.
Despite being my first, this is the fourth book in Victoria Laurie's Life Coach Mysteries series.
I have to say that this mystery was entertaining and engaging. This book was great. Lots of suspects and good plot twists.
The characters' realism is something I really value because, in my opinion, it increases the books' capacity to be believed in. books are consistently well-paced, mysteries are interesting, and stories are always well told.
It was nice to spend time with Cat and Gilley. I was kept guessing throughout the mystery until the shocking conclusion, and I'm eager to learn what awaits them in the future book.
Part of my December print column (the article below and the book) in a newspaper I write for (fourth book recommended) and a real mystery with a twist! As this is my first read of the coached series, I am now looking forward to what is to come from the author and Cat, her character in these books. I really thought a mystery series that revolved around a life coach sounds like a lot of fun, as a character in a book and it was! Plus, in this book, her "Watson" was a real fun addition, good personality, and made me want to read just about the characters, regardless of the mystery! Check out my review below, sorry it was so small as I only had 400 words and since it was the holidays, wanted to fit in as many books as possible!
Tea Time With A Good Book Only in December We Substitute With Hot Chocolate ;)
With so many great recommendations to close out the year, I wanted to keep them short and plentiful, for under the tree as a gift or a read for yourself on those silent, chilly nights wrapped in a blanket under the twinkling lights.
The Circus Train is a coming of age tale in a mystical, rich, circus, during World War II. It is a tale of strength, courage, love but most of all, endurance, perseverance and overcoming insurmountable, seemingly unwinnable odds. Next, for science fiction/ fantasy fans we turn to the writings of Nathan Traverse in A Fractured Infinity. Hayes Figueiredo, an unsuccessful movie maker, brought to the envisioner, a machine that can't be explained; not where it came from, how it works, even what it does. A complex, metaverse tale that wraps around your mind, not once, or twice but over and over and back to wrap again!
For fans of historical fiction, Philipia Gregory wraps up her series with the long awaited finale to the Fairmire Series with Dawnland. Livia is well, Livia, up to her old schemes. This time, however, her plans may well include royalty, up to, and including, the heir to the English throne. You won't want to miss this masterpiece. And those who want a writer with a strong pen when it comes to looking toward the Lord for strength, there is The Finding of Miss. Fairfield by Grace Hitchcock. Finally, for mystery lovers there is Coached Red Handed by Victoria Laurie. When Cat's client is murdered after a session in which she provided coaching advice she can't help but feel devastated, intent to catch who done it. An instant, new, favorite of mine!

What a thrilling ride! Cat and Gilley always make me laugh but there was also so much empathy in this one: for each other, for loved ones, for clients, and new friends. They’ve both grown so much in the last few books and while the mystery was front and center in this, you can’t help but admire Cat for her big heart. The mystery kept me guessing with an interesting list of suspects. Can’t wait to see what they get up to next (although I’m a little disappointed we didn’t get to go to Europe with them – maybe in the next one?)
I received a copy from #NetGalley for an honest review.
Cat Cooper and her bff Gilley are back in this classic whodunit cozy mystery. A wealthy woman, greedy family members, betrayal and lies are just the tip of the iceberg in Coached Red-Handed by Victoria Laurie. Cat and Gilley aren't sure what to expect when they find themselves caught up in family dysfunction and things only get worse when someone is killed. Cat has limited time to seek out the truth, she plans on whisking Gilley away as his marriage comes to an end. Unfortunately for Cat, things get out of control in her own personal relationship and if she doesn't tread lightly, Gilley won't be the only one in need if healing. I was wrapped up in this book as soon as I started to read it, the characters are wonderful and there were plenty of twists and turns to keep me guessing. I was caught off guard at the reveal, and of course this book ends with a cliffhanger. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of this book. I look forward to recommending it to others. #CoachedRedHanded #NetGalley
In Coached Red-Handed, coach Cat has a new client.
Scarlet Rubi is a fabulously rich romance author who is sick of supporting her extended family. Her sister, nephew, two grown children, and two granddaughters have never done anything in their lives but suck money away from her. Cat and Scarlet decide on a solution. Scarlet will give them the million dollar houses that Scarlet allows them to live in rent free. But only if they agree to never to ask Scarlet for another dime. It doesn’t go well, and Scarlet is murdered that same night.
Gilley is Cat’s best friend. Gilley has recently broken up with his longtime love. To cheer him up, Cat is taking Gilley to Europe. Unfortunately, as the last people to see Scarlet alive, Cat’s detective boyfriend, Shepherd, tells them they can’t leave the country. That forces the bffs to investigate the crime themselves so their trip isn’t delayed.
I’ve followed the hilarious Gilley from the author’s Ghost Hunter cozy mystery series to this series. Now, both he and I are beginning to settle into his new lifestyle. In addition to Gilley romantic heartbreak, Cat and Shepherd’s romance takes central stage in Coached Red-Handed. If you want a funny, cozy mystery with realistic romantic subplots, look no further, this book is great! 5 stars!
Thanks to Kensington Books and NetGalley for a digital review copy of the book.
This is the fourth instalment in Victoria Laurie's Life Coach Mysteries series, though it is my first. I got to meet Cat Cooper and her best friend, Gilley. Cat and Gilley are expecting to be holidaying in Italy and all the plans are in place. But wealthy Scarlet Rubi needs some help first; she needs assistance with a fresh start as her toxic family members, including her ex-husband, are money expectant and want her to fund their lifestyles. Scarlet, a successful romance novelist is looking to cut their cash flow among other things. But the next day Scarlet is found dead and Cat and Gilley were the last to see her according to Detective Shepherd, Cat's boyfriend, which puts them on the list of suspects.
In this compelling tale, many, it seems wouldn't have minded seeing Scarlet dead. As soon as I thought I knew who might be the culprit, a new piece of information emerged that flipped everything around and made me rethink and reevaluate all of the suspects. A terribly good story that has made me want to start the series from the beginning, with Coached to Death.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Kensington Books via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.
In the fourth installment of Victoria Laurie's The Life Coach Mysteries Cat and Gilley find themselves trying to solve the death case of a prolific author, Scarlett Rubi, whom just hired Cat for the life coaches on how to set herself free from her mooching family members.
I think the mystery itself is quite engaging. There's no run out of suspects, for sure, because boy, oh, boy, Scarlett's family members are all despicable human beings. Cat and Gilley don't really solve the case though; the murderer is not someone they consider.
While I like the mystery, I cannot rate this one higher because I really AM not happy with the personal aspect of the story.
This is where the spoilers are coming, okay...
First, Gilley's marriage is kaput. Considering that I was there (as a reader) with Gilley throughout his marriage in the other series, I'm bummed. It's not one I expect to read. Poor Gilley.
Second, I haven't been comfortable or convinced about Cat and Shep for the past three books. I think they have totally different principles. In here, Cat is trying to "help" Shep with throwing her money around, even if Shep says no. So she basically dismisses his wish; which I think is a stupid move. But Shep's reaction is also ballistic, and he always seems bloody angry about Cat trying to investigate cases. How are THEY going to work?!?
So that ending? Yeah... NOT my favorite kind. I think it's a mistake. I wish Laurie writes another man for Cat somewhere in the next books. Because I think the foundation of Cat and Shep's relationship is really fragile and I can't, for the life of me, want them to end up together.
The ARC is provided by the publisher, Kensington Books, via Netgalley for an exchange of fair and honest review. No high rating is required for any ARC received.

Coached Red-Handed by Victoria Laurie is the fourth book in her Cat & Gilley Life Coach Mystery series. Cat and Gilley have a tough case to solve in this book. Gilley has a lot to cope with considering his circumstance. Cat and Shep have some ups and downs. None of this stops Cat and Gilley from interviewing possible suspects, following clues and using their smarts and experience to successfully solve the murder mystery.
This book has a complex storyline with good pacing. I like the characters and find the interactions between Cat and Gilley to be quite entertaining. This was a fun whodunit to read.
I loved it! I pre-ordered this book many months ago because this is one of my favorite writers. Very good mystery. Cat is such a good person and Gilley is, well, silly and together as friends and a team they are so entertaining. It was a treat hearing how characters from the author's other book series were doing too! ARC netgalley.com
What a great mystery! This is book 4 in the 𝓛𝓲𝓯𝓮 𝓒𝓸𝓪𝓬𝓱 𝓜𝔂𝓼𝓽𝓮𝓻𝔂 series and I enjoyed it just as much as the previous books in the series. Even though the focus of the book was on the mystery, there is also a lot of spotlight moments on the main characters and their relationships in this one.
I always love Cat and Gilley’s interactions together and how they have each others backs. No matter what they are going through or what challenges they have to overcome, the story is still lighthearted and makes me laugh. They are definitely a great team when it comes to navigating life and solving the mysteries they find themselves involved in.
I do wish that we would have been able to see them actually go to Europe, since that was the driving point to them helping to speedily solve the mystery. Maybe in the next book they will end up taking the trip and hopefully we get an answer from Cat regarding the way the book left us hanging.
Overall this was a delightfully intriguing mystery with an interesting set of suspects. It kept my guessing and made me laugh. If you haven’t checked out this cozy mystery series, I highly recommend that you do.
I’ve read almost everything by this author and I love all of her books, but this one felt disappointing to me. It just seemed really silly, but not in a good, fun mystery way. The villain was blaringly obvious and what they were wearing at the end? REALLY? I won’t say more on that to not give away spoilers, but REALLY??
Also, a whole scene was written explaining how to pronounce the name Siobhan. Was that really necessary? Are we really that dumb that we need an entire back and forth conversation on how to pronounce it and spell it?! The one thing I did like was Cat becoming more aware of her frivolousness. I agree with Gilly that it makes her unrelatable. Hopefully that’s something that will continue to improve in the next book. I’m hoping that overall the author returns to the type of writing that I fell in love with in the first place.
I was planning on giving this book 3 or 3.5 stars because although I liked the characters, the writing at times seemed a bit more YA to me. The mystery was good but it moved too slowly. Then suddenly, toward the very end, it picked up and started getting exciting. The murderer surprised me. Great ending.
I wanted a lighter read and got just that. I love the cast of colorful characters. The story was interesting to a point. The problem I had was that I knew the killer from the first meeting or rather once the victim died, I knew instantly who the killer was. I never wavered but hoped I be wrong as I wasn’t sure how the feet was pulled off. But alas, I was right. It was so obvious for its pretense of not being obvious. Le sigh. I’ve read too many crime novels and I’m generally right. But I hoped. This is probably a 3.5 star read for me because I wasn’t at all fooled and there were a few plot holes, but I’ll round up.
Still really like this series, but I have misgivings about Shep, he seemed aggressive at the beginning of the book, and I'm not thrilled with how he treats Cat, at times. Also, both Cat and Gilley seem to not be bothered at all by Shep's behavior, which is even more concerning. Cat can do better!
Definitely enjoyed this life coach mystery. It was easy to get into and following along with the main characters kept me invested in the plot. The death of the famous author Scarlett was a great plot twist since it made so many suspects. Victoria Laurie never disappoints.
I really liked this book! It’s part of an excellent series, and the characters are really fun and quirky. Cat is a life coach and her best friend Gilley is recovering from his divorce to his partner. Cat wants to take him on vacation, but she gets a call from a famous woman who is later found murdered. Cat and Gilley need to solve the crime before they can leave on vacation. This is a fun read, 4 stars.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed as in this review are completely my own.
I have to admit, Victoria Laurie’s books are one of my guilty pleasures, so when I saw that I might be able to read one early, I was absolutely thrilled! I have read this series for years and have enjoyed every single one of them. This one was no exception. It does help if you’ve read the series from the beginning to stay up with the characters and what’s going on, but the mystery is never dull.
Victoria Laurie is one of my MUST read authors every time one of her books comes out. I have never been one for paranormal/psychic eye type stories but for some reason her books are a fun, easy read and there’s always a part that makes me laugh out loud.
Thank you to #netgalley and #kensingtonbooks for allowing me to read the eARC of this book. All opinions expressed above are my own.
The newest installment of the Life Coach Mystery series is a smash hit! I just finished reading Coached Red-Handed by Victoria Laurie and couldn’t put it down. Ms. Laurie is one of my favorite authors, and she definitely delivered on this book.
Cat Cooper decides what her BFF Gilley needs is a dream vacation to Europe to take his mind off his heartbreaking divorce. But before they can pack their bags, Cat takes on a new client Scarlet Rubi, a famous septuagenarian Romance Author. Scarlet needs Cat’s help to finally cut off her mooching, money-grubbing family members. Mere hours after Scarlet puts the kibosh on her family’s freeloading, she is murdered. As the last two people to see Scarlet before she died, Cat’s police detective boyfriend tells her she and Gilley can’t leave town before the case is solved. So with that ticking time bomb counting down the seconds till their plane departs for Europe, they are on the case to find out whodunnit.
The author has always done a great job of crafting her books. She is one of the best authors to write with humor, intrigue, and drama. There’s a scene between Cat and Gilley in which a conversation takes place at Howler monkey decibels that is so funny I laughed till I cried. I couldn’t open my eyes for several minutes because I was laughing so hard! Even now, writing this review, I’m laughing.
Anywho, Ms. Laurie’s characters are relatable, realistic, and well-rounded. In this installment, the suspects abound as motives for the murder are brought to light with every turn of the page. There are some excellent red herrings added to the mix, and the ending was a complete shock.
I love Victoria Laurie’s books, and was thrilled to read an advanced copy through NetGalley. I’m happy to share my views and enthusiasm for this book!
I love Cat and Gilley. I love the very real, sometimes strained relationship between Cat and Shep. I was heartbroken when Gilley and Michael got divorced, but hopefully a better relationship is on the horizon for Gilley. I would love for Cat and Gilley and Shep to become a fearsome foursome! As always, a great mystery with lots of little side stories. A fantastic read!
Coached Red Handed by Victoria Laurie (Life Coach Mystery #4) 4 stars
In this book, we find the dynamic duo of Cat Cooper and Gilley is the midst of a life crisis. Gilley is going through a divorce and is grieving the end of his marriage. In order to cheer his up, Cat proposes a trip to Paris and its environs. Planning ensues which means that Gilley needs a dog-sitter for his wonder pooch. While asking a friend to dog sit, Cat is given a referral to a client in need of her services. Scarlet Rubi is a bestselling author with family issues. She is the sole support of her extended family and she needs a plan to shut off the “Bank of Rubi”. Cat and Gilley provides her moral support at a family meeting that is contentious and loud. Mission is accomplished and all is good. What gives Cat a shock is a morning phone call from her boyfriend asking that she meet him at Scarlet Rubi’s home. Apparently, she and Gilley might have been the last persons to see her alive since she was shot dead before midnight. Cat and Gilley will not be able to make their European trip unless the real murderer is found. Delving into the background of the relatives will be like trying to navigate a cesspool without gagging, but Cat and Gilley are determined to see justice done.
This was a fun and enjoyable mystery. Both Cat and Gilley experience some character growth and it seems that the romance between Cat and Shepard is progressing nicely. The identity of the murderer was a surprise and ingenious. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.
Thank you Netgalley and Kensington Books for this ARC,
Princess Fuzzypants here: Cat and Gilly are looking forward to a European tour when she is asked to coach a very rich author who wants to free herself from her money-grubbing family. All the disenfranchised members are perturbed when she informs them of her decision and makes them each sign a contract whereby she gifts them with the houses that she owned. One of them it seems is more upset than all the others. This person murders the woman but if the killer thought things would return to the way it was after her death they are sadly mistaken when the will is read.
Jack is the cop who is investigating and he wants Cat to stay out of it but Cat and Gilly stubbornly refuse. They need a solution so they can make their flights but they also have a fondness for the victim and for her employees who are now in danger. They want to be sure the right person is arrested and that there is justice for the deceased. They are going to deep-dive into a highly dysfunctional family. I must confess I twigged to the killer almost immediately. But there are so many other notables suspects, it would be easy to be fooled. None of them deserved the largesse she bestowed on them before she was murdered.
Sometimes I do want to shake Cat but I was delighted when she was called to task by Gilly. She can be very smart but she can also be very unaware. She does get better as the story evolves. I did enjoy the book though and will give it four purrs and two paws up.
Gilley’s divorce is final and Cat has the perfect solution for when Michel comes to collect the last of his belongings…a trip to Europe! Before they can head out they take on a new client and the woman is murdered not long after they met with her and her family. While not the prime suspects, they are on the list and Cat really wants to solve this before she and Gilly leave the country.
With a family of financial vultures, Cat and Gilley have a slew of suspects to work their way through. When their suspects start getting picked off one by one, Cat and Gilley have to keep shifting their focus until they can find the right family member with opportunity and means, because they all have motive. Even better would be doing it shoutout putting themselves in jeopardy, but can Cat and Gilley solve the case before their trip, or will the only place they travel to be the hereafter?
I adore this series! Gilley and Cat are pure BFF goals. They have each ithers backs and they are always there for each other, be it business, sleuthing or just another bump in the road of life. Having worked with AI for years now, I’m a huge fan of the butler…Me thinks I could use Sebastian in my own home.
It's one thing to have your travel plans changed due to a misplaced passport or a case of flu but a murder? Oh, dear. That's what Cat and her BFF Gilley face just as they are ready to hop a flight for a three week vacation in Italy. Cat had hoped the escape would help Gilley deal with the breakup of his marriage. Now, due to their connection to a dead woman the police have them on the suspect list. If the trip is to happen Cat and Gilley have to unmask the killer. The deceased woman, Scarlet Rubi, was very, very rich and her family wanted to get their hands on all of it. When she decided to cut them off from all that money it's a sure bet somebody was not going to stand by and let that happen. She had wanted to make some life changes and turned to Cat for life coaching. Was that her big mistake? Cat and Gilley will do their best to find the answers. This is one of my favorite series and it was a pleasure to spend time in the company of Cat and Gilley. The mystery kept me guessing to the unexpected ending and now I'm ready to find out what's in store for them in the next book. My thanks to the publisher Kensington and to NetGalley for giving me an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
Coached REd-Handed is the fourth book in Life Coach Mystery series by Victoria Laurie.
This is one of my favorite series and new book is always a eagerly awaited treat. It has all major ingredients: beautiful setting, clever and charming heroine, hillarious and warm hearted side kick and a good and well executed mystery.
In this book, Catherine and Gilly are planning a trip to Europe so as to avoid Gilly's husband who is coming back to pack his things after their divorce. As expected he is heartbroken and Catherine is ready to do pretty much anything to make him feel better. Unpredictably they get a new client who so happens to be a well loved and highly regarded romance novelist. Unfortunately she is soon murdered and realizing that they might not be able to leave until the killer is apprehended our dynamic duo sets out to solve the crime.
I especially appreciate how realistic characters are, how main protagonists grow and evolve with each book, to me it adds to the believability to the books. Stories are always well told, mysteries are engaging and books are steady paced.
All in all this installment was a pleasure to read as is the whole series.
Cat's friend Gilley grief-stricken over the end of his marriage, he had no idea there was even a problem. Cat wants to help him take his mind off of things and what better way to do that than a long trip to Italy. The two are ready to head out but before they can leave a client needs there help. Scarlet Rubi is a romance author who has trouble saying no her family. She asks Cat to help her make an announcement to her family letting them know she is cutting them all off, no more handouts. The night of the get together everyone is upset but Cat helps Scarlet let the family know she will no longer be their meal ticket. The next day Scarlet is found dead, the whole family was upset when they left the previous evening but who was mad enough to murder. Being one of the last people to see the woman alive, Cat can't leave for her trip until the murder is solved. Cat and Gilley begin their own investigation but soon learn this is going to be harder than they thought, everyone had a reason to want her dead. Will the dynamic duo be able to find a killer quickly or will their trip be postponed forever?
Life-coach Cat and her best friend tech savvy Gilley return in their 4th mystery adventure. Gilley is distraught after his husband divorced him so Cat plans a European trip to cheer him up. But before they leave Cat takes on a new client who is looking for a Life-Coach to assist her with a fresh start of her own.
Successful romance author Scarlet Rubi is extremely wealthy and her toxic family members (and ex-husband) are money hungry and expecting her to fund their lifestyles. Scarlet want to cut the money flow and seeks advice from Cat. The solution is found and Scarlet and Cat move quickly so the family can be told that night that the handouts are stopped effective immediately. Someone is not happy with this and Scarlet is executed later that night.
Cat is told by her boyfriend Detective Shepherd that as they were the last to see Scarlet alive, they were not to leave town until the mystery is solved. With their flights to Europe booked the following week, Cat and Gilley start their own investigations with a group of nasty selfish relatives who all have a reason to kill Scarlett. There are more deaths and we nearly lose our heroic duo as they face the killer before all is revealed and reasons given. Once the dust settles and Cat and Gilley are on their way to the airport there is a killer last few sentences which makes me really, really want book 5 to come out soon!
Oh - and I really, really want a Sebastian in my life. Who is Sebastian? Read the books and you’ll find out.
With thanks to Netgalley and Kensington Publishing for my copy to review
Cat Cooper and her best friend Gilley once again find themselves helping wealthy Scarlet Rubi deal with her toxic family. So much for their relaxing three-week vacation in Italy. I guess it does help Gilley forget about his divorce, even it if is for a little bit. A murder happens sending Cat, Gilley and Detective Shepherd, Cat's boyfriend, into investigating mode. The book has a nice balance of personal life and detective life. I gave this book a try but was about to give up the series. In the last book Cat just got all over my nerves. She is still sassy but seems more mature in this book. I don't see Shepherd and her staying together, just not on the same page about life, but I could be wrong. I sure hope to find out in the next book. The Murder mystery did not have a lot of suspects but enough to keep you guessing. I am enjoying Gilley, even in his personal grief he still has his humor.
She's got the Psychic Eye series, the Ghost Hunter series, and this is book 4 in the Life Coach series. I've read them all, and Victoria Laurie can do no wrong!
This installment was engaging and fast-paced. Catherine (Cat) and her live-in mooch Gilly are preparing for a trip to Europe to ease Gilly's broken heart after his recent divorce. Before they can leave, a prospective client, Scarlet Rubi, reaches out to Cat for help. As an insanely successful writer, she's been supporting various family members for years, and she's had enough. Cat helps her come up with a perfect solution. Not long after the volatile family meeting, Scarlet ends up dead, shot execution style.
Cat and Gilley are on the case, much to the chagrin of her detective boyfriend, but this duo always gets the job done. I was NOT prepared for that ending, and I'm anxiously awaiting book 5, which doesn't release until November!
