She is the daughter of a British beauty (her mom won second place in a beauty contest sponsored by Max Factor® during which she received a kiss from Caesar Romero, (the Joker on the original Batman TV series) and a Texan who was stationed at Bovingdon while serving in the air force. ✨Ride me good god yeemotherfuckinhaw I’m a horse girl now✨
Lorraine is as Lorraine as ever here and I owe her a life debt. The gist of this book is that these two absolutely don’t trust each other but they’re absolutely horny for each other and that’s my new favorite thing. From the initial premise, I was absolutely in for it all. His father’s mistress???? And I was into it???? And I cried???? Lorraine can sell me anything and I'll gladly pay over-asking. She hasn’t let me down yet.
Every book in this series is five stars from me (a first!) and I had super high hopes for this one because book 2 was absolutely everything I wanted… but I must admit that Marcus was the hero I had the weakest attachment to (from a series perspective). Lorraine even said it herself in her author’s note, she didn’t know where his story was going to lead…
So knowing that, I am absolutely worshipping at the altar of her mind because I cannot begin to describe just how perfect this book was for me. BOTH main characters were perfect and heartfelt and SWOONY. I need more jaw-breaking heroines thank you very much. I think this may be my favorite of the series??? Because I LOVE when I can go all in for an angsty, actiony romance. I don't really want to give much away about the plot because it's bonkers and beautiful so just give it a go if you're down for a hot little enemies-to-lovers number. It also ends on Christmas!
I absolutely adored Esme and Marcus as individuals, so when they finally came together I was unprepared for the things my heart did. Their chemistry and the forbidden aspect of their relationship was So. Hot. She was mooning over him holding a cold glass and he always ended up on her front steps. She was his and he was hers and they are MINE. They had big Mr. and Mrs. Smith energy and yes they did absolutely get off on fighting each other. Like I said, they don’t trust each other but they’re hot for each other and that’s my kink apparently.
They also ride each other a LOT and if you would’ve told me a year ago that “ride me” would be one of my favorite phrases during a sex scene, I would’ve said hawyee but now I say yee to the motherfuckin haw because goddamn it’s HOT. There was also face-sitting that turned into a 69 and I still haven’t recovered. It's also one of those where she's never come during sex with a partner and hoooweee I love that soho much. You best believe our man Marcus was up (and down) for the task. Lorraine really pulled out all of the stops with this gem and I found religion.
Overall, I absolutely with my entire heart recommend this book and the series as a whole. Each book has been a five-star read for me. I think they each are very tonally different, but they work as a perfect introduction to the historical romance genre. You've got best friend's brother (book 1), starchy hero (book 2), mystery and action (book 3) all in classic Lorraine fashion. From now on, I'll be recommending this series to HR beginners!

The Return of the Duke is book 3 (and the final book) in Lorraine Heath’s Once Upon a Dukedom series. This was one of my most anticipated historical romance releases of 2022. LH is my favorite HR writer, I’ve read just about 40 of her books at this point and it hurts me so much to say I did not enjoy this book. This felt so different from her usual storytelling and writing style and just was not was I was expecting or hoping for when I went in. The spy/espionage trope just is not really my jam and on top of that I found the romance sadly lacking and even the characters not that enjoyable.
Marcus Stanwick was once the heir apparent to the prestigious and powerful Dukedom of Wolfford. He was born into a family that had been a favorite among royalty since the days of William the Conqueror. But after his father is found guilty of treason with an assassination plot against the Queen, the family is stripped of their titles, estates, and possessions. This story picks up one year after his father was hanged for said treason and Marcus sets out to find any possible people his father might have conspired with. He wants them to pay like his father had to. This is how Marcus comes to be at the house of Esme Lancaster, also known as “the heartless harlot”. Marcus’ father claimed Esme was his mistress before his death and Marcus wants to find out anything Esme might know about his father’s possible conspirators. But once he meets Esme, Marcus realizes not all is at it seems and there is a whole lot more of the story to uncover…
If you enjoy spy historical romances, this might be the read for you: spies, an Agent of the Crown, working to protect the Queen, hidden weapons, a street gang, breaking and entering, decoys, and a whole lot of scheming. This leaned heavily into the espionage side of things for me, which is just not a trope I enjoy much. It didn’t help that the romance and chemistry with the characters just wasn’t there either.
Moments I liked: we do get a slightly older heroine, younger hero (she’s 33, he’s 30). I do also love how expansive LH’s books feel because of being set in the same universe, and we get to see familiar characters again. This book connects to a few: Marcus’ brother Griffith’s book is Scoundrel of My Heart, the first book in this series, and their sister Althea’s book is the last book in the Sins for All Seasons series, Beauty Tempts the Beast. We get to see both of those couples in this as well as a minor mention of Dr. Graves (from Scoundrel of St. James series) and get to see almost all of the Trewloves (Sins for All Seasons series). I will forever be a LH fan and cannot wait for the Chessmen series next.

Lorraine Heath never disappoints when it comes to a historical romance filled with chemistry, tension, steam, and an intriguing background plot.
Finally getting the heir to the dukedom and his father's mistress story was more than I was hoping for. I could not put this book down. The pacing was perfect, the characters were well fleshed out and the romance was sizzling!
This leaned heavy into the spy/conspiracy against the crown plot which I really enjoyed, but if you prefer less plot then you might not enjoy it as much.

This one had so much potential! The heroine was seen to be the mistress of the hero's late father who was put to death for treason against the queen. The hero is determined to get to the bottom of what his father was involved in, and that means confronting his mistress. The heroine, though, has many secrets of her own and the two of them definitely do not plan on falling for one another. This sounded like a fun historical with lots of action and espionage, but unfortunately a lot of this was boring and I just didn't feel the connection between the two main characters. Only the end had more of a fast paced plot, and even then I didn't really care when reveals happened or the characters found themselves in trouble. I really wanted to like this story more, but it misses the mark for me.

This was a cute book! I enjoyed Marcus and Esme's relationship; they definitely had chemistry! I absolutely loved the quote I posted in the beginning of this review. It made me chuckle and giddy at the same time. This was my first Heath book and I really enjoy her writing style. I'll definitely give her other books a try.

Una lectura muy entretenida, pero me ha faltado saber más de ese año que ha pasado Marcus, todo resulta demasiado fácil en la pareja y el malo no puede ser otro
Como en el resto de sus novelas, la relación entre ellos es bonita, de superaciones, pues ambos tienen cosas que asimilar. Pero, en general, es una historia muy previsible y estoy segura de que la autora podría haberla hecho mucho mejor
Aún así, consciente de que con Lorraine Heath soy especialmente exigente, una novela de lectura muy recomenable

I really loved this story! I find most Lorraine Heath books to be winners, and this definitely falls into that category. I thought the characters were really interesting and the plot drew in right from the start. Marcus and Esme had a great back and forth, until they finally were able to trust each other. Great conclusion to the series!

Lorraine Heath did a great job writing the mystery and espionage parts of the book. I would not be surprised if she switched to writing mystery books, or if she already does under another pseudonym. She had me guessing who-dun-it three times.
The romance was nicely intertwined with the mystery, however, I think it took a backseat to the assassination plot. If it weren't for the great writing, I would have rated this book a 2. Bonus: There's a 69 position scene! 🥵🥵🥵 Lastly, I felt that the last couple of chapters (after the villain was apprehended) dragged on unnecessarily. I felt the same way about the last couple of chapters in her other book, Beauty Tempts the Beast.
Speaking of Beauty Tempts the Beast, if you don't want spoilers for that book, then I would recommend that you read that book first. Plus, this is where the plot for Marcus's book begins.

First Impressions
The Return of the Duke is the last in the Dukedom trilogy and I am so pleased with this book. This author in recent years has become such a hit or miss author for me. So I never know what I am getting into with this author. I am so happy to say that this book was such a WIN for me. Not my favorite of the series, as I think book one still wins that medal, however, I was so delighted with this book and everything that is delivered in this one here. I absolutely adored what Lorraine Heath delivers here, and it was so different and was still just as spicey as you would come to expect from her writing. Lorraine Heath has always been ahead of the steam when it comes to historical romance. This story was such a kick ass romance, and if you are a fan of spies and lovers ,then this one will totally work out for you. I was so charmed by this one, and I didn’t expect it. I went smart and tried it out in audio and so grateful that I did. It has a talented narrator and really made this book shine.

In The Return of the Duke, we have a story where our hero, Marcus Stanwick, was the heir to the Duke of Woilfford, and is determined to find the culprits that worked with his father in the plot to kill the queen and the reason that he and his siblings were stripped of everything that had because of it. On his journey to get to the other involved, he comes across Esme Lancaster, who has secrets of her own and is on her own journey as she is a secret agent for the crown and has been working with the Queen for years now. She doesn’t know what Maccus’ angle truly is, but she doesn’t trust him. But as they come with a compromise in working together, there is a chemistry that builds between them and she doesn’t know that she can keep her resistance to Marcus much longer. But to Esme this is just a job, but soon it becomes so much more than that. As Marcus and Esme get closer to revealing the truth about the lies and secrets, will they find a way to their happy ending or are their worlds too different to find common ground?
What I Loved
The Return of the Duke was such a captivating romance and I enjoyed it so dearly. In fact, I had the most challenging time actually rating this book, it wasn’t quite a five (because I did have a few issues) but I will say that this one truly worked for me in such beautiful ways. There is a sense of redemption in this story and we really get to see so much depth to a hero that has been so secretive in the past two books. I loved this side of him that we get to see in this one here. I truly found him so remarkable in how honorable and full of integrity he is. We see how his father’s betrayal really affected him and how he is wanted to redeem his family name. We see his good heart and sense of responsibility to his siblings. Then we have Esme, who is the “secretive” of the pair. Normally the hero comes off as being the secretive one in a romance, but Esme is the one that fits this bill. We don’t really know her intentions at the beginning of the story and I really admired her tenacity and strength. She is a vibrant woman that has so many capabilities, she has her own strengths and will to get the job done. She is a survivor and is completely loyal. I truly had a blast with the layers of chemistry that is built throughout the story. We see so much in their romance in how its deeply layered side by side with the plot that worked so well. Marcus and Esme make such a strong team and really balance out each other’s strengths in a synchronized manner. You see the level of attachment they have, but also their fierce level of protectiveness for those in their care.
What I Struggled With
I will be honest inthat the heroine was a hard one at times, and she didn’t show any vulnerabilities or flaws at all. I don’t really want a perfect heroine, I want a character that is real and relatable and she felt so “perfect” and untouchable. I also wasn’t a fan of her actions in the end. The story built up into such a crescendo but the ending just didn’t harmonize with the rest of the story, and left me feeling so untethered. I want a “riding off into the sunset” and this one just didn’t quite deliver on that front.
The Narration
I will say that Kate Reading has such remarkable talent, especially in how she narrates historical romances, there is something in her manner of voice and delivery that is so attractive and endearing. I really enjoyed the way she used the levels of her voice to display the hero and heroine and other gender of characters that we get faced with in the story. The accents were done just right and the way she delivered the sexual tension really built throughout the story so well. I do think that Kate Reading is a star out of female narrators and such a joy to listen to. Her voice is highly engaging and she immediately pulled me into the story here.

I found The Return of the Duke to be a remarkable listen and Lorraine Heath definitely delivered a solid finale that struck gold! Its a story of sacrifice, sizzling chemistry and a duty bound love that will warm the heart and bring such light delights to entertain!

First Impressions
The Return of the Duke is the last in the Dukedom trilogy and I am so pleased with this book. This author in recent years has become such a hit or miss author for me. So I never know what I am getting into with this author. I am so happy to say that this book was such a WIN for me. Not my favorite of the series, as I think book one still wins that medal, however, I was so delighted with this book and everything that is delivered in this one here. I absolutely adored what Lorraine Heath delivers here, and it was so different and was still just as spicey as you would come to expect from her writing. Lorraine Heath has always been ahead of the steam when it comes to historical romance. This story was such a kick ass romance, and if you are a fan of spies and lovers ,then this one will totally work out for you. I was so charmed by this one, and I didn’t expect it. I went smart and tried it out in audio and so grateful that I did. It has a talented narrator and really made this book shine.

Return of the Duke was my most anticipated release of 2022. I adore the first two books of this series and could not wait to see what Marcus was up to.
There was some awkward moments in regards to Esme - I was holding my breath as to weather or not she or was not Marcus's fathers mistress in truth. The story was heavy on the intrigue and leaned into the spy element, very different from the first two books. Esme's heath issues are so common among women and it was refreshing to see that brought to attention in a historical setting. Esme and Marcus were well matched and I enjoyed seeing them come to love and respect one another. The story was engaging and well written, Kate Reading did not let me down with her narration.
I will say that this was least favorite of the 3 books but I can not wait for the Chessmen series.

Such a great series and sadly this is the last installment of the “Once Upon a Dukedom” series. 💕🏰💫 An enemies to lovers + forced proximity trope.
Book #3 follows Marcus and Esme. An heir to the dukedom.. Marcus Stanwick lost everything because of his father, the Duke of Wolffords treasonous actions.. and now all he wants is to put to rights his family name.. to find the others that also conspired to assassinate Queen Victoria. 👑🔪 Past circumstances has led Marcus to believe our heroine Esme Lancaster was his deceased father’s mistress 💄💋and the cause of his mothers death. It’s because of this that he despises, loathes her, but on the other hand.. he’s also incredibly smitten by her. 🔥🤷♂️🫤 (I know what you’re thinking but you’ll see how LH has managed to clear that up) And lo and behold, Marcus learns our beautiful but very dangerous heroine Esme is a spy for the Queen! 🥷🏻
Not everything about Esme is what Marcus first believed it was.. and they’re so incredibly well matched being good-hearted, brave + fierce individuals.. not only do they solve the mystery behind the assassination, they get their happily ever too!!! AND there’s great action and adventure in this one!

ok. this book was so much fun! the sexual tension is completely off the rails and mix that with a spy/murder mystery plot against the British Crown?? LH sure knows how to write a romantic AND action-packed HR 😌 as can be seen with my reading updates, we were IMMEDIATELY thrust into a story where the two MC's were FERAL for one another (moreso Marcus than Esme but ya know) and it ✨ofc✨ sucked my attention into the book lol. the enemies-to-lovers trope lasts for a while into the story as the heroine is the supposed ex-mistress of the hero's father... which ... *ERM* idk how to comment on that LOL but yeah .. their tension is PALPABLE OMGG THE AMOUNT OF TIMES THIS MAN WAS IMAGINING HER RIDING HIM OR HIM RIDING HER OR LITERALLY ANYTHING THAT INVOLVED THEM NAKED WAS JUST 😃 it was lovely :)
anywho, enough ab the sex talk. so i really enjoyed the first half of this book!! the tension kept me reading more and more but.... after that, i felt like the whole spy plotline overshadowed the romance to the point where i was just getting bored :/ felt like there were really long dialogue paragraphs talking about plans and all that and tbh, i had to skim 😒 that definitely detracted my overall enjoyment and by the end, i was just not feeling the same energy i felt at the start of the book, hence the lower rating.
although that was the case, i did really enjoy the story overall. i felt like the MC's, especially our heroine, was brilliant! she's brave, confident and incredibly intelligent .. her job description demands that and i loved reading about a FMC like her a lot. at the end, we got an author's note that that next series will follow the "Chessmen" and i am very very intrigued about them now toooo !!
if you love a good romance with a spy/mystery plot then definitely give this one a shot friends! i'd def recommend this entire series as well :)

This was one of my most anticipated reads this year but womp, womp it fell pretty flat.
Marcus the deposed Duke finally gets his revenge (the last book in the Sins for All Seasons series and the first in this one are must reads to fully understand this one, imo) but except he doesn't? Everything that had been teased up to this point was wrapped up much too easily, the secret villain was basically beating me over the head with his identity and Marcus wasn't the bitter, dark anti hero I was expecting. Esme, the heroine's character was kind of generic. She was an agent of the crown which was kewl I guess. She gets to do all the rescuing which was a nice flip on genre conventions but I also want my hero to, like, do stuff 🤷♀️ This was very plot driven and the romance took a back seat which is a big ol nope in my book.
So TL;DR : The steam was decent for LH but the relationship development was bland and the chemistry lacking compared to her other books especially when compared to the first in this series.
A very lackluster end to a series that started out so strongly. Sadness. Still a meh Lorraine Heath is still leaps and bounds ahead of other HR as far as I'm concerned.

It's been an excruciating read. To finish reading, I had to totally ignore Marcus's heroine.
I loved revisiting the Treweloves ~ Griff & Kathryn ~ Althea & Ben, her Duke ~ and everyone actually. They earned all the Three Stars for this could-have-been a Great Book ~ but wasn't.

This is only my 9th book by Lorraine Heath. Her books are well written and great reads. I don't read her often for several reasons - 1 her books are not always my genre, 2- they can be expensive and since I read 300 books a year, it can add up and 3 - some are older (over 15 years) and not sure I really want to read the older books. I think authors tend to get better over the years and it makes me leery to go back and read an old book that may not be as good as some of the newer ones by her I might have read. Weird, I know! But even as a reader, I feel I am a better reader than I was even 5 years ago, if that makes any sense. That is also why I don’t like to re-read books I read a while back. I’m afraid I won’t like them as much as the first time. That has actually happened. Anyway, Lorraine Heath is a great writer. Even though this series is from 2021, I just read book 1 last month and just finished book 2.
I know my reviews can get so “one note” but for the most part, you can pretty much get the total idea of the story from the book description which I imagine most people read. I don’t but I would guess most do. Plus I only ever read HEA stories so you know that’s going to happen. So other than the story, characters and sex scenes I don’t like to say too much because I just don’t want to give anything away. Sometimes I start to say something but afraid I’m giving something away so then I do go to the book description to see if the author mentioned it. If so, then I can expand on that. Otherwise, just know that for most of my reads, they are authors I’ve read many of their books and know I’ll get a good read. That is why I list how many of their books I’ve read, so you know I like them. 😊
I really enjoyed Marcus and Esme’s story. So different and exciting. I loved the suspense and intrigue. Another one I couldn’t put down. I realized that Lorraine Heath isn’t super, super steamy but she has a few well written sex scense and fit perfectly within the story. She just writes so well, it doesn’t bother me. I love that I enjoy stories like this one but then my next book might be all “ton” stories with balls and teas and house parties. I’ve noticed over the years there are actually a few authors I read on a regular basis that write great suspense and thrilling intrigue filled stories. Spies, Pirates, Gaming Hell Owners, etc. I’m glad I can enjoy all of them.

Just over a year ago, Marcus Stanwick changed in ways he never could have imagined when his father, the Duke of Wolfford was convicted of plotting to kill the queen and hanged for treason and the Crown stripped him of his titles, and estates, leaving the family homeless, penniless, and shunned by society. Burning for vengeance and hoping to restore the honor to his family name, Marcus loses himself in London’s dark underbelly, looking for answers but after a year with no success he finally seeks out the last person he ever wanted to talk to – his father’s former mistress.
Esme Lancaster is not what she seems, she is not the loose woman she has portrayed, she is actually an agent working for the home office and the queen’s protector. She met the duke while investigating rumors of a plot to assassinate the queen and was ordered to engage with him. Even now she is still looking for answers about the plot to assassinate Queen Victoria and is surprised it has taken Marcus so long to confront her and even more surprised at her immediate attraction to him. He is rude to her and demands to know if his father confided his plans or co-conspirators to her. When she can’t provide him with any new information, he leaves, but they meet again in a few days and she believes his intentions are honorable, so she offers up a name that she says his father mentioned. She is following up on a lead given to her by her superior and isn’t really surprised when her path crosses with Marcus again but realizes her cover is blown when he saves her from being discovered. They escape, but he is injured and she takes him home to tend his wounds. The next morning the truth comes out, she was never his father’s lover, she was investigating him, she suggests they work together to figure out who was the mastermind behind the plot and stop them before they can strike again. So all they have to do is find the killer and try not to fall in love – simple right?
This was such a great read! It was well-written, nicely paced, and tied up all the loose ends from the series perfectly. This book has it all; intrigue, wonderful characters, action, great secondary characters, steamy love scenes, redemption, and finally a lovely HEA complete with an epilogue. I think this might be my favorite book in the trilogy, and while it could be read as a standalone title, I would recommend reading the books in order for the best reader experience.

She met the duke while investigating rumors of a plot to assassinate the queen and was ordered to engage with him. Even now she is still looking for answers about the plot to assassinate Queen Victoria and is surprised it has taken Marcus so long to confront her and even more surprised at her immediate attraction to him. He is rude to her and demands to know if his father confided his plans or co-conspirators to her. When she can’t provide him with any new information, he leaves, but they meet again in a few days and she believes his intentions are honorable, so she offers up a name that she says his father mentioned. She is following up on a lead given to her by her superior and isn’t really surprised when her path crosses with Marcus again but realizes her cover is blown when he saves her from being discovered. They escape, but he is injured and she takes him home to tend his wounds. The next morning the truth comes out, she was never his father’s lover, she was investigating him, she suggests they work together to figure out who was the mastermind behind the plot and stop them before they can strike again. So all they have to do is find the killer and try not to fall in love – simple right?
This was such a great read! It was well-written, nicely paced, and tied up all the loose ends from the series perfectly. This book has it all; intrigue, wonderful characters, action, great secondary characters, steamy love scenes, redemption, and finally a lovely HEA complete with an epilogue. I think this might be my favorite book in the trilogy, and while it could be read as a standalone title, I would recommend reading the books in order for the best reader experience.

Feels good to read a Lorraine Heath after so long! This one was full of adventures and cloak and Dagger endeavors.
I loved the heroine and her dedicated work to the Queen. I also enjoyed the historical wink at the woman with a tumor the queen completely embarrassed being Esme. Giving her a miracle surgery instead of the sad death she had in real life. And also making Queen V a bit of grace for that situation.

I love everything Lorraine Heath ever writes. I love the twisting, surprising plots and complex, swoony characters. I love how she is able to make each and every one of her 8 million books feel new and fresh and real and I love the way her books seem to not only respect but also celebrate the genre and the readers.
This book is great. It's twisty and compelling and jam packed with both romance and action. It's good for the soul. It wasn't my favorite of hers, but that's only because she has so many fantastic books.
If you have ever loved a Lorraine Heath novel, pick this one up. You won't be sorry.

It's been a year since Marcus lost everything, and he's still on a mission to find his father's co-conspirators to bring some honor back to the family name. He visits his father's former mistress Esme to gather any possible information. They're drawn to each other, and both feel the other is hiding something. What unfolds is an uneasy alliance, espionage, and undercover operations.
Esme is self-sufficient and inherently mistrustful, and Marcus is as well. They begin working together to uncover a plot to assassinate Queen Victoria, and it becomes impossible to fight their attraction to each other.
This was a good story and finished off this trilogy well, but quite frankly was my least favorite of the three. The Duchess Hunt was really great, and this did not quite live up to it. I think the main issue was that it felt a little too long, so the subplot got a little tedious. The relationship between Esme and Marcus was very compelling, as two people who did not trust each other but just could not keep their eyes and eventually hands off each other. There were a few funny moments, and I've included two of them in this review.

4.5 starts. I really enjoy the spy trope and especially when it includes a female agent of the crown! This book ties up some lose ends from the first two books and I loved how it included the Queen in it! I found it a bit slow at times so that’s where it lost 0.5 stars for me but otherwise a great end to the series! I look forward to reading about the Chessman next.

I’m going with the assumption that the publisher wanted Lorraine Heath to write something more “New Adult” for a younger audience. I feel like I’ve been tricked and in a parable; I’ve always wanted LH to write steamier novels, and she straight up delivered Little Caesar’s Hot N Ready. Home girl ratcheted up the sex at the expense of character development and dialogue. :/ Wah wah wah. 😭

In The Return of the Duke, the third and final book in the Once Upon a Dukedom series, Marcus Stanwick searches for the accomplices to his father’s treason. Marcus confronts Esme Lancaster, who he and the rest of society believes was his father’s mistress. However, Esme has many secrets as well as her own reasons for wanting to learn more about the people trying to overthrow the throne. As the pair work together to uncover this treasonous plot, Marcus realizes Esme isn’t the woman he thought she was. Can the pair resist their ever-growing feelings for each other? And will they solve the mystery before it’s too late?
This is a great conclusion to the trilogy! Marcus is such a dynamically developed character, and I like how much he grows over the course of the story. At the start, he is a broken man who is singular in his goal to restore his family’s name and reputation. Destroyed over his father’s treason and the subsequent loss of everything in his life from his home to his titles and friends, Marcus lives a solitary life and has pushed away the family he has left. He changes so much throughout the book, and a lot of it can be attributed to his relationship with Esme. Esme is fantastic! Bold, independent, strong, and as determined as Marcus, she is nothing like Marcus expected. She doesn’t need a man to protect her, and she proves that she is more than capable of handling herself and protecting others. He also learns that her relationship with his father was not what he thought.
The enemies-to-lovers relationship between Marcus and Esme is amazing! They have such great chemistry, and I adored their banter. There’s a lot of mistrust between the two initially, but they are so drawn to each other. Something I really like about their relationship is how they treat each other as equals. Never does Marcus treat Esme differently because she is a woman. He respects and admires her strength and intelligence as much as she respects him. I also like how they slowly open up and begin to trust each other. Both have difficult pasts, and neither lets anyone get too close, so when they show vulnerability, it’s really special. Plus, they have the best sparring matches!
The mystery of the assassination plot is so intriguing, and the author integrates some really interesting espionage equipment that was considered cutting edge at the time. I thought it was fascinating and added a lot to the authenticity of the time period. The plot is full of twists and surprises, and Esme and Marcus find themselves in danger too many times to count. It makes for a fast-paced and captivating story.
Though it’s the third book in the series, it could be read as a standalone. Though, if you did read the first two books, you’ll be pleased to know that the major characters from those have secondary roles in this one. Also, like the first two books, the epilogue takes place some time after the conclusion of the book, so you get to see how the couple’s life has progressed. I love that!

Amazing! Only Lorraine Heath can take the establishing plot points of a disgraced lord and his treasonous father's mistress and beautifully craft a love story full of intrigue, misconceptions and mystery. Heath's writing is lyrically beautiful and perfect paints the budding relationship between hero and heroine, creating a deep connection between them and the reader. This novel is well passed and plays out a mystery that the hero and heroine can work together on equal footing to solve. I have been waiting for this story for the past three books and I think Heath as done a lovely job of bringing this romance and the conclusion to the Stanwick's saga, leaving my heart full of love and respect for the characters that she has crafted and brought to live. Heath is definitely a favorite historical romance author for me and someone you absolutely must explore if you have not had the opportunity yet.

In order to gain more knowledge Marcus must align himself with the last person he would want to-Esme Lancaster, a notorious harlot and supposed mistress to his late father. But Esme is shrouded in secrets and also has her own reasonings for wanting to discover if the plot to assassinate the queen is still underway.
I am in love with every aspect of this novel. I love our hero, he is smart, bold and strong. He has had to leave his life of privilege and learn how to navigate the wild streets of London, and this only makes him a more stronger and capable person who has a deeper understanding of the important things and relationships in life. Esme is the perfect heroine for Marcus, she is cunning, mature, intelligent and the perfect temptress to show Marcus what he truly wants out of life. I love that Marcus and Esme are both on equal footing, they are both more than capable to rescue themselves or the other, I love that they both can be serious when needed but also learn how to have fun and tease in moments of lightness. Watching their relationship develop out of misunderstanding into a strong and trustful relationship is so beautiful. Heath is the perfect word smith to show the deepness of understanding that Esme and Marcus build for the other. Heath also creates a delightfully steamy and sensual relationship between these two, Marcus and Esme are fire together and their physical relationship and small touches only helps to prove the depth of their true feelings towards the other (even before they fully admit to them).
Heath will definitely take you on an emotional journey that is highly fulfilling. Her heroes and heroines always feel like the perfect soul match to the other, and she takes the time and care to craft the characters in the world around them that provide them with support and love. I have absolutely adored her Trewlove series and this trilogy spin off has been the perfect extension of that world.
This book is a must read for me! Lorraine Heath is a must read author! You will definitely not be disappointed and your will be left with a heart full of love for the characters that have finally discovered their happily ever afters!

Are you in the mood for intense, sizzling chemistry? Heartfelt moments? Characters that you make you want to scream and yell at to just freakin’ kiss already? Look no further—“Return of the Duke” absolutely delivers. A fairly decent historical standalone with strong characters with such intense chemistry you can feel it bleed through the pages. It was a fun, swoon-worthy banterful romance novel that will have you come back to this author for more.
Though it was a fairly enjoyable read, there were chapters in this historical read that dragged hence the three star rating. The pace fluctuated throughout and I wished it was a bit more consistent, especially in the second half of the series. Nonetheless, well worth the read and for obvious reasons, I will keep this author on my future reads radar.
