Sōichirō Yamamoto (山本崇一朗, Yamamoto Sōichirō) is a Japanese manga artist. He is known for writing and illustrating Teasing Master Takagi-san and Soredemo Ayumu wa Yosetekuru. Both series have been published in Monthly Shōnen Sunday and Weekly Shōnen Magazine, respectively.
Well, not yet. This volume spends most of its run time bringing the whole Rin thing into the picture. Some other things happen.
This is basically the worst use of Rin possible, emphasizing her status as the No Hope Rival of the story and walking us through her current torment as Ayumu and Urushi keep on nearly getting there.
Honestly, any given volume of this series is going to be middling or really good and there’s rarely a middle ground (I know, just go with it). Rather than ride the momentum from last time, this one just stalls out with a couple of notable exceptions.
The cosplay chapter is clearly an excuse, but then gets into some extra fun when Urushi gets a little too into character and then attempts to one up both of her kouhai with a devious plot that implodes on her in hilarious fashion.
This one is especially worth it because the joke extends to the single page shogi notation that gets thrown in for the die-hards at the end of the appropriate chapters, taking on a meta-joke aura that I really enjoyed. That’s an example of how this series can really nail it when it’s trying.
There’s also a fun chapter where Rin gets caught eating lunch early by Ayumu, who jokes around with her in a way we haven’t really seen (and his one-liner’s a belter too!), but helps emphasize how different he sees Rin compared to Urushi. The capper to this is a really silly visual gag that implies that Ayumu might have been trained by Mr. Miyagi at some point.
Mostly, however, we’re getting wheezy comedic saws like Takeru talking about kissing (the fallout from his kiss with Sakurako makes for a better chapter later on) while others are talking about something else. Urushi being flustered around Ayumu. Nothing new. Then add in wheezy dramatic saws.
I mean, the story isn’t bad or anything - the chapter about the rain is predictable but rather melancholy in a way I appreciate - but it’s certainly been more clever than this. Rin is actually more enjoyable as a friend, so having the rival stuff focused on doesn’t add much, for my money, except padding things out.
We end with the promise of a training camp arc, with Maki, Urushi’s boisterous friend, along for the ride. Of course, they have to shop first, and you can set your watch to how quickly any training camp arc swerves to the beach. Just saying.
3 stars - it’s not terrible; I do enjoy spending time with all these goobers, but sometimes the focus is on what it does best, while other times it’s on rehashing the same stuff you’ve seen in dozens of other books and not adding much to it. We’re in the latter sphere this time around, leaving it as something solid, but emphatically unspectacular.
More of a 3.5 star rating; While I didn’t like Kagawa being a love rival initially, I’m starting to warm up to that idea because as things play out, Kagawa isn’t trying to sabotage Yaotome and Ayumu nor is she trying to steal Ayumu for herself. Kagawa has a genuine friendship with both of them and is overall a nice character. There was also a really cute moment between Takeru and Sakurako in the library, and I’m still rooting for them a bit more than I’m rooting for Yaotome and Ayumu. As sweet as Yaotome and Ayumu’s dynamic is, things are starting to feel a bit repetitive and I’m wondering just how long it’s going to take for them to officially confess to each other.
I ended up devouring the first 13 of this series over the course of a couple of weeks. I really enjoyed the relationship between the main characters. It's super sweet but adorable they just have this sweet romance. The art is beautiful and I found the whole came of shogi interesting. I will continue this series. I did a blanket review for all the books I've read so for. This is a high school romance that is slow burn so and I highly recommend.
I am really bummed that the Rin romantic rival/triangle situation here is becoming such a huge plot point. I was hoping she and Urushi would become better friends...plus, this just drags down Ayumu/Urushi's relationship time.
best chapter was when Urushi and Ayumu get stuck in the rain! and when Sakurako/Takeru finally confront their kiss!! more of that please, less of Rin...

The aftermath of the last volume is being felt by Ayumu, Urushi, and Takeru. Ayumu believes he's failed to make a good impression (false, you're going great sweetie), Urushi is still too shy to admit her feeling aloud, and Takeru just comes out and asks if he was hallucinating (good for him). But the biggest part of this volume is Rin and her (not-so-subtle) crush on Ayumu.
But there's also rainy season, studying for exams, Ayumu's and Urushi's birthdays, Tanabata wishes, and swimsuit shopping (because Shogi Club Training Camp is coming up and we wanna enjoy the beach too).
