A Captive for Kean

SARA

I’ve made a huge mistake!

When the handsome and charming alien offers to steal me away from my abusive owner, I jump at the chance for a better life. But appearances are deceiving, and now I find myself owned by a cold-blooded killer.

Kean’s sinful growls and possessive words make me crave things I know I shouldn’t. But I can’t fall for the ruthless murderer who ends lives with a smile on his face. It’s wrong! I need to get away before it’s too late.

KEAN

Sarah is mine!

I’ve done many horrible things in my life to get to where I am now. And I will do many more to protect what is mine. And Sarah is MINE! She’s terrified of me, but I know she wants me. I scent her arousal.

I didn’t expect her to run. But there’s nowhere for her to hide; I own all of Vosthea. And when I find her, I’m going to claim her as my mate!

This sci-fi alien romance is filled with violent and steamy scenes. Our hero is not your typical “good guy,” please do not read if hyper-protective and possessive criminals with drug empires upset you. HEA guaranteed!

This story is a complete romance and can be read as a standalone or as part of a series.

Character Backgrounds and Plot Summary

Sara is a human woman who has spent far too long under the control of an abusive owner. When the powerful alien Kean offers her a chance to escape, she believes she is finally finding freedom. Instead, she discovers that her rescuer is a feared crime lord and warrior who rules the planet Vosthea with ruthless efficiency. Kean may have saved her from one master, but Sara struggles with the fear that she has simply traded one captor for another.

Kean is not written as a traditional romantic hero. He is possessive, violent, and unapologetically dangerous. He kills enemies without hesitation and maintains control through strength and fear. Yet from the moment he sees Sara’s courage in the face of abuse, he becomes determined to protect her. The central conflict comes from Sara trying to reconcile the brutal warlord she sees with the fiercely protective mate Kean believes himself to be.

The story follows Sara’s adjustment to life in Kean’s compound while she searches for clues about her missing sister, Chrissy. Her desire to find her sister repeatedly puts her at odds with Kean, especially when misunderstandings lead him to believe she is trying to leave him. Their relationship develops against a backdrop of political conflict, criminal rivalries, and Kean’s efforts to secure his control over Vosthea.

Highlights and Limitations

One of the book’s strongest elements is Kean himself. Lynnea Lee leans fully into the morally gray hero concept rather than trying to soften him. Kean remains dangerous throughout the story, but his actions consistently reveal his devotion to Sara. A particularly effective example is how he provides her with safety, food, and comfort after rescuing her, despite her fear of him. His protectiveness feels genuine because it is demonstrated through actions rather than declarations alone.

Sara is also more proactive than many heroines in captivity romances. Her determination to find Chrissy drives much of the plot and prevents her from becoming a passive character. The search for her sister adds emotional weight beyond the romance and creates believable conflict between the leads.

The worldbuilding is another strength. The political instability on Vosthea and Kean’s position as a planetary ruler give the story a larger scope than a simple captive romance. The action scenes and power struggles help maintain momentum between romantic developments.

The biggest limitation is that some readers may struggle with Kean’s possessiveness. His “Sara is mine” mindset is not subtle, and several conflicts could have been resolved more quickly through communication. The romance relies heavily on the fated mate and possessive protector dynamic, so listeners who dislike dominant heroes may find the relationship difficult to embrace.

Narration

Troy Duran is an excellent choice for Kean. His deep, commanding voice captures the character’s intimidating presence and confidence. When Kean delivers possessive lines or issues threats, Duran makes them sound completely believable.

He also does a good job differentiating characters during dialogue-heavy scenes. Kean’s authority, Sara’s uncertainty, and the supporting cast each feel distinct enough that conversations are easy to follow. Most importantly, Duran understands the tone of the story. He balances the danger, action, and romance without overplaying any one element.

Because the audiobook is told by a single narrator, some listeners who prefer duet or dual narration in romance may miss having a separate voice for Sara. Even so, Duran’s performance is strong enough that the audiobook remains engaging throughout.

Final Opinion

A Captive for Kean delivers exactly what its premise promises: a possessive alien warlord, a frightened but determined heroine, plenty of action, and a romance built on protection, trust, and emotional growth. Kean is one of the darker heroes in the Tallean Mercenaries series, but his devotion to Sara keeps him compelling rather than simply cruel.

The search for Chrissy adds meaningful stakes, while the political conflict on Vosthea prevents the story from becoming repetitive. Combined with Troy Duran’s commanding narration, the result is an entertaining sci-fi romance that balances danger, adventure, and steam.

If you enjoy morally gray alien heroes, protective mate bonds, and captivity romances where the hero must earn the heroine’s trust, this audiobook is well worth the listen.

After reading the 1st chapter as part of the author's newsletter, I preordered this book right away. I was drawn to Kean and his desire to protect Sara eventhough he is not the normal hero type. He has done bad things keep those he cares about safe and will continue to be that man.
While they are drawn to each other, the question remains of how they fit into each other's lives. Has Sara traded one master for another, or is Kean saying more than Sara thinks when tells her she is his?

I am a huge fan of Lynnea's and am eager to catch up on the rest of the series. A satisfying read that sets up for the next story.

An intense, action filled romance

Kean rescues Sarah from her owner then has to work to keep her from being afraid of him when he has to defend his authority on the planet. This is a story of mates and how they come to realize it while lots of action is happening. In the beginning I saw Sarah as too meek and accepting of being a slave but towards the second half of the book she got stronger and more determined.

Sarah and Kean, the interaction and chemistry between them is wonderful.
Kean, a biochemist, produced Euphora and had made quite a fortune from it. But he wanted the Dominion off of his planet. He was ready to offer Gadrek the same job he had now with the Dominion, except he would be working for Kean at greater pay. Kean had taken over the second port and now it was only Gadrek who let the Dominion troops into his port. It was easier to buy him off, but he had no problem with just killing him outright. The Dominion forces currently swarmed Vosthea to use the planet as a launching pad for attacking the nearby colony of Reka 5. As they negotiated, Gadrek kept petting a frowning human who was kneeling at his feet throughout the meeting. She looked like she wasn’t being fed and she had bruises all over her arms. But her eyes were rebellious -- Gadrek had not broken her. Sarah was surrounded by predators, but Kean and his elite guard looked like they hunted hunters and the lack of weapons would not even slow them down. Gadrek’s inattention gave her a chance to get the knife on a side table, and she put it in her waistband.

Kean saw what she had done and, when Gadrek was called away for a moment, he went over and asked her to give him the knife. He would protect her. He told her he would call her by name and she was to walk over to him. Gadrek came back and was ready to betray him. Kean called Sarah over and handed her to one of his men while unarmed they faced Gadrek’s guards. Then they all reacted and no more than one shot was able to be fired. Sarah had to look to make sure Gadrek was dead. Kean moved toward her and she shrank away, but Zake who had been protecting her reminded her Kean would not hurt her and he was honorable always.

Sarah misses her sister, Chrissy, whom Gadrek had sold. Kean has a party, and Sarah sees the man that bought her sister. Kean is jealous over the attention she gives the man. The man had also sold her sister, so she finds Rax and they leave the compound. Not knowing what Sarah is up to trying to find her sister, Kean believes she left him. He ends up imprisoning Rax and locking Sarah in the room. Will she explain what is going on before he goes crazy? Will she get an opportunity to track down her sister and rescue her? Will he claim Sarah as his mate?

The addition starts with the book cover….yeah…yeah…yeah don’t judge a book by its cover they say ….well we all do it and this one here it is the scratch to your itch or better yet the filling to your oreos! Speaking of filling…..wait, that’s for later. Within the first chapters you get the panoramic view of whom you’re dealing with! By the time you’ve figured out who is who and who to like and dislike, you’re already hooked, and you may as well give up the fight and prepare yourself for an all-nighter!
Can’t say I didn’t warn you.
Okay if you like aliens, action, danger, suspense, passion, love, and jerkiness yep some of them are like our guys here are earth they are jerks. Kean rescues her by killing her master and taking over his territory. Sarah was being mistreated by the previous master that is what she has grown to know extremely underfed when he finds her and she expects him to be no different but yet he proves from the moment he sees her that he is different by giving her a room, food and arranging his staff to care for her. The old saying curiosity will get you killed well n Sarah case it opens her eyes to who/what Kean she is out in the garden and goes looking to only see him through the window of his office killing someone thus making her fear him even more at least she knew what to expect from her old master here it is new territory. But Kean is attracted to Sarah from the moment he lays eyes on her. She misses and worry about her sister and at a party thrown by Kean she sees the man who bought her sister only to find out she was sold to another man and upon asking around she goes with the man who bought her sister, but Kean only thinks she is leaving him and that really upsets him, and he attempts to kill him but Sarah stands in his way so he throws him in prison and locks her up in her room. Will she explain the truth to him, will he believe her, will she find her sister and is there an HEA for the two of them?

This story about Kean and Sarah was a engaging enjoyable read. Kean rescues Sarah from her previous master, Gadrek by killing him and taking over his territory which makes him ruling all of Vosthea. Sarah under fed and afraid is given a room and taken care of by his staff but Sarah misses her sister, Chrissy. Kean attracted to Sarah is overworked getting his new territory in order and only sees Sarah at lunch. Sarah curious about Kean sneaks in the gardens and looks into his office window and catches him killing. This enforces her fear of him. When Kean throws a party, Sarah sees the man that bought her sister but Kean gets jealous until she explains. When she finds out he sold her, Sarah becomes determine to find her and asks the staff if they seen her. When a young man Rax comes forward they leave the compound but Kean in anger believing she left him tries to kill Rax which Sarah prevents. Still angry he orders Rax imprisoned and locks Sarah in his room. Will Sarah forgive Kean's behavior and find a way to work together in their budding relationship? Will she find her sister? This ARC I volunteer to read and review via booksprout was well written and kept my interest till the end.

Wow! What a wild ride this book takes you on. Kean finally gets his happy ever after and his fated mate. It all starts with a instant attraction and turns a bit bumpy because Sarah is unsure. With everything she has gone through and kean has to make many decisions that aren’t easy and sometimes leads to necessary “violence”. She doesn’t like it at first because of how she was treated when she was her previous owners slave. But her body betrays her at every turn since it knows they should be together and have a mate bond. Twists and turns happen involving Sarah trying to find her sister and you get to see keans alpha hole side. He’s protective and strong... comes across harsh at times (which leads to a misunderstanding or two) but only because he wants the best for her and is a huge teddy bear for her. I can’t wait for the next book in this series!

What an enjoyable book! Sometimes, it's good to be a little bit bad. Anyone worried about/looking for a Stockholm-type read here: this isn't that. It also doesn't fall into the usual "I claim you, now spread 'em" alien/warrior trope.

Kean is a wonderfully grey character who manages to be complex, damaged, and do very bad things without being a cliche alphahole. Sarah is a woman with a fierce desire to survive, learn, and be useful. She is smart and inquisitive, and takes the time to speak to many sources to build an accurate understanding of who Kean actually is. I love that Kean gave her the time, space, and freedom to learn to trust him, and for their relationship to grow in an authentic way. I also love that Sarah was willing to call him on his behaviour when he was acting without thinking. I'm looking forward to future stories for Sarah's sister and Kean's closest friends.

Sarah is a human slave and one day, Kean comes and saves her from her terrible master. He gives her a much better life, but she is somewhat scared of Kean's methods of diplomacy. As Sarah learns more about Kean, the more she falls for him. She realizes that there is a lot more to Kean than she first thought and is ready to join him in his world. The story was very good and was what I expected when reading a different series by this author. I have enjoyed her books before and I was not disappointed. The plot was very well paced and I really enjoyed the character development. I'm glad that they didn't realize they were mates until further into the story. The epilogue makes me interested in what the author has planned next for the series. It is still a happy ending, but it kind of leads into what the next book is going to be about.

I was sent a copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.
Kean is a cold blooded killer. He will snap someone's neck as easily as looking at them. Kean buys Sarah from her previous abusive owner. Kean knows that Sarah is his and tries to protect her from his brutal lifestyle but as the owner of Vosthea - a huge area he runs with an iron fist. Cross him and you die at his hand - brutally and horribly. He tries to protect Sarah from his lifestyle but she witnesses him brutally killing two men and terrified she hides in her bedroom at Kean's compound. How is he going to convince her that he would never in a million years harm one hair on her head? How does he react when she escapes? What lengths will he go to once he finds her to convince her she belongs with him?
I recommend this book and this author.

WHEW!!! This book is full of action, danger, alien intrigue, passion, more romance than I expected to see, and unexpected elements of humor that were well placed. Kean is actually a very honorable guy, and from the moment he rescues Sarah, he’s a goner, especially when he realizes she’s his mate. Sarah goes through a lot of different emotions while getting to know Kean, but her chemistry with him is the one constant that helps move her towards the inevitable HEA that is waiting if she allows it. This was my 1st book in this series, so I had a bit of catching up to do, but it didn’t take long to figure things out. The book can be easily enjoyed as a stand-alone story. This is a truly entertaining story from beginning to end!

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. There's lots of action in this book Kean takes control of Vosthea and the attempts to take it away from him. Kean sees Sarah for the first time at a meeting and admired her courage. He convinces her to trust him to deal with Gadrek and protect her. Sarah does. Kean has to work to win Sarah's affections because she was put off by the violence he needed to display. After talking to members of Kean's household, Sarah accepts what Kean needs to do to keep control and protect his people. Sarah convinces Kean that she wants to be at his side through everything and Kean accepts this. Kean even manages to get her greatest wish, her sister back with her. I hope Chrissy gets her own story as the little mentioned sounds very interesting.

Loved the storyline and how it jumps right in and grabs you in the first pages. I had to finish the story in one sitting so it was a long night of reading. This story has plenty of drama, action, danger, violence, passion and love. Kean ends up rescuing Sarah from her master by killing him. She was so mistreated, underfed and she expected no less from the alien that just killed her master. Kean blows her mind when he gives her a room, food and has his staff take care of her. Kean is attracted to Sarah and when he thinks she is leaving him with Rex then he tries to kill him but Sarah steps in the way so Rex gets put in prison and he locks Sarah in her room. Will she be able to explain to Kean about her sister? Will he believe her and help her find her sister? Great HEA. An amazing alien romance for Kean and Sarah. He is now ruling the entire planet, which is mostly wild with dangerous beasts. She was owned by a terrible man for a while, not taken care off and nearly starved. Kean took her from him and provided her safety and healing. Filled with intense emotions and feelings, as well as backstories that bring them front and center, the characters hold your attention and do not let go. The romance gets steamy and the relationship proceeds nicely. Surprises and truths create situations that need to be dealt with, sometimes violently. The tracking of her sister becomes quite a hunt. The amnesia really brought the atmosphere down a few pegs, but thankfully it reversed. Loved the storyline and the characters. Very well done.

These characters have very interesting personalities and their actions seem realistic. This unique story has the following: intrigue, twists, turns, adventure, action, love, steam and a HEA. It is a well-paced, Alien Romance story that will keep entertained from start to finish. A must for any Sci-fi Romance reader.

I had really been looking forward to Kean's book and was disappointed. He made a big deal in Lettie and Vore's book that he would spoil and protect his woman.

So the heroine doesn't get spoiled at all. He can't get her clothes so she has to wear hand me downs from an employee with a granddaughter her size. She pulls off ruffles so they don't look like little girl clothes.

He ignores her because he's busy dealing with the takeover of the planet. He tries to have lunch with her but keeps getting interrupted. Yes, she is not his priority.

This is a well written tallean romance. Its got fated mates, action, steamy scenes and a happily ever after ending.

Sara is a slave, she’s been malnourished and abused and intends on killing her captor, until Kean stops her and does the deed himself. He rescues Sara and declares her his. Unfortunately now he’s taken over vosthea, there are people willing to kill him to get what he has, including Sara.

I really like this series but I have to say I didn't like this installment as well as the others. I didn't particularly like our female or male lead. The fact that our male lead was a drug dealer who previously harmed innocents and our female lead making excuses for his behavior really turned me off. Not much of a story line but it does intertwine well with the previous books.

It's Kean's turn to find his special someone and things do not go smoothly for the guy. I mean, sure, he managed to get Sarah away from her not-so-great owner, but there's a lot these two have to work through before they get to their happy place.

To start, Kean is a literal planetary warlord. As in, he pretty much owns the entire planet of Vosthea. This puts a bit of a target on his back since not everyone is thrilled by this and plenty of individuals would like of piece of his planet for themselves. On the other hand, there are plenty of individuals who are deeply loyal to the male who gave them a place to live in safety. In other words, things are as dangerous and chaotic as you'd expect them to be for a planetary warlord.

Unfortunately, Sarah sees the violent side of Kean first. Sure, it's tangled up with a protective side since he managed to get her away from her former owner, but it takes time for her to reconcile the things he has to do to keep those under his protection safe. Honestly, he'll do ANYTHING to make sure she stays safe. Which is something she absolutely needs to mentally wrap her head around before she can commit 100% to them.

A little danger, a little betrayal, a missing sister, a little time spent in the wilds of Vosthea, a male who isn't about to let his lady slip away, and a lady who knows a good male when she sees him (even if it takes her head a while to get on board). *thumbs up*

A merciless alien drug lord with a heart of gold? That is how those that know Kean describe him

Written for mature readers only (18+ years old) due to subject matter that may be a trigger or offensive to some including adult language, steamy intimate scenes and violence such as kidnapping / abduction, human trafficking / enslavement, assault, betrayal, illegal drug trade, fighting with some to the death, etc.

This is the sixth story in the series and due to reoccurring characters and overarching themes, I highly recommend these be read in series order.

There are some grammatical issues, such as extra and/or transposed words, but not so frequent that I felt I needed to lower the rating. I gave this one 5 stars based upon the depth of the story universe and the strength of the characters.

I have been looking forward to Kean’s story and wondering what type of female would finally trigger his mate bond. Kean has been introduced in previous stories and always seemed to have the best intentions, especially for someone who manufactured and sold a drug that could be highly addictive.

Sarah is feisty, fierce and willing to fight, even after being starved and segregated. I especially like the two things she did to defy her former “master” after he sold her sister and what she was going to do if Kean hadn’t figured it out and intervened.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ — Good Vibes, Great Potential, Just Needed a Bit More Oomph

Okay, so A Captive for Kean fits in nicely with the rest of the series—like that one cousin at the family reunion who looks good in all the group photos but doesn’t say much. The plot? Solid. The world? Still super fun. The alien? Hot, obviously. But the connection between Kean and his captive? It needed just a liiiittle more simmer.

I wanted to feel the relationship grow, not just be told it did while we jumped from one plot point to another like a space-themed obstacle course. Gimme those slow-burn looks, awkward conversations, the “wait, do I actually like him?” panic. You know, the good stuff.

Don’t get me wrong—this was still a fun read. The story moves fast, there’s action, a sprinkle of steam, and it keeps pace with the rest of the series. It just felt like the romance was on autopilot when I wanted it to be in full swoony, slow-build mode.

Still worth reading if you’re already into the series! Just maybe temper your expectations if you’re here for deep character development and emotional angst. (And if you're like me, you'll still read the next book because—well, aliens.)

4 & 1\2 fabulous 🌟's for book 6in the series.

I enjoy this series it's fun sexy with lots of action and passion. Kean is a Tallean warrior who was betrayed by his own people and left for dead. Rising like a Phoenix from the ashes he beats his enemies uses his I intelligence and skill to create an empire that now inc!here's ownership of a whole planet. During a less that legal business deal Kean meets Sarah a tiny abused human female. He takes care of the trash 😉and rescues her. He takes her back to his compound and slowly begins to realize that she means everything to him. His reputation as a cut throat criminal scares Sarah at first until she truly gets to know him a eh sees why he makes certain decisions and choices. There are some misunderstandings almost deadly experiences, passion and lots of love the perfect way to end a rather hellish work week. Thanks for making me laugh , smile a d wish I had a Tallean warrior of my very own.💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖

The writing could use some good editing. It was very repetitive when Sarah was describing being at Kean’s compound and in a few other instances. For whatever reason the author felt it necessary to repeat practically the same thing at least three times.

Then the character development was just so teeny bopper. The level I expected was not there. Sarah seemed to think more like a tween girl than an adult. And there were so many plot holes with her escape into the jungle at night alone, and somehow it was more dangerous during midday with Kean. I mean he can attack a group of armed warriors and be fine but one creature and he’s knocked out then loses his memory. WTH!? The story was just ridiculous.

And of course, the epilogue teases Chrissy and Zharor together as she’s knocked up with his kid. Intriguing, perhaps, but if the book is written like book 1, yeah I can assume what happened and will happen and pass.

Oh boy. How did she manage to eff this book up so bad? I was really looking forward to Keans story only to find him so unlikable. He liked little girls?
Why did she have to be so petite, so small like a child??? erm .. what?
He had to give her platform shoes to make her look taller so she would not look like a child. Did she really have to write it like that?
She wore childrens clothes all the while he had ways to get her normal clothes.
This was so disturbing that the heatedd moments felt disgusting.
And he almost killed a guard because all he thought was yealosy. She just wanted to find her sister and he didnt bother to listen so fixed that she loved another.
And so many copy paste sentences, at least change the word order. No?
Even what Ulrek said about humans not being good slaves. (yes, i read Ulreks story first by accident)
Maybe this series lost its magic or she got tired of writing Tallean stories.

We finally get Kean's story after meeting him in a previous installment. Somehow his story felt shorter than the others but still action packed with lots of spice. Some parts of the story could have been told in more detail or lengthened, such as the amnesia but it didn't make the story less interesting. Sara is a fairly strong FMC. The part of the story that I found the most questionable and that made me pretty uncomfortable Kean coerces Sara to take the euphoria at the party. Especially because at that point she still thought she was a slave. Kean's concerned thoughts don't really excuse the skeevy actions either. I'll concede that that particular scene helps the plot in some ways considering that he is a drug lord so to speak, and is a bit morally grey. Overall this is another nice installment to the series and I'll definitely keep reading.

SO GOOD & SMUTTY!!!!!

Can I just say this book is my favorite out of the series it’s just so good!!! Ever since I read about Kean in Lettie and Vorin’s book I’ve been dying to read his story. I AM SO GLAD HE FINALLY FOUND SOMEONE AND IS HAPPY HE DESERVES IT AFTER EVERYTHING!!! The romance is everything and I absolutely loved their chemistry Kean and Sarah had one of the best relationships the way he opened up to her and showed her his vulnerable side and only around her or those he was closest to and the way Sarah was bold and open too throughout their interactions or how she felt or why she wanted to get her sister back!! PICK THIS BOOK UP IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY BECAUSE WHEWWWW!!

When Kean rescues Sarah from her abusive owner, he never expected to be so attracted to her. But when Sarah sees Kean administering Tallean justice, she fears him and what he will do to her. Getting Sarah to overcome her fear of him is something that Kean is determined to do, but an attack on the compound leaves Sarah fighting to escape those that are after her and puts her at the mercy of the forest predators, predators that attack Kean while he defends the human he thinks may be his mate. A fantastic addition to this hot and steamy series. It was lovely to see Sarah change from being an abused prisoner to someone who has something to live and fight for. Great characterisation and a storyline full of drama and action.

Great story and fits in well with the rest of the series, but really could use more character and relationship development, especially for Sarah. We learn that she was a secretary back on Earth and she is very attached to her sister but not much else.
I enjoyed the plot twist (amnesia) but it seemed like something that could have been used to create more suspense within the relationship or Kean's ability to lead the planet.
I also think it would be great if Sarah found a roll for herself as Kean's advisor or assisted with his delegation of tasks or something, their relationship would have a lot more dynamics.

When Kean sees how poorly his rival treats a female slave, he decides to take her. Sarah is tired of being starved and mistreated. Just when she thinks she's out of options, she's saved by a fierce and protective alien named Kean. But can she trust him not to hurt her? This is an enjoyable story filled with action, great world building details, a good plot, likable characters and themes of loyalty & protection. They manage to soothe each other's wounded spirits. A possessive alien plus a female human with courage and spirit equals an entertaining out-of-this-world spicy romance!
