I knew there would be an explanation about the physical condition which struck Elizabeth so violently but resisted turning to the end to discover what it was. However, I can now say that reading about that condition, that illness, could be done without really spoiling the story...if other readers are so inclined.

So this story does center around how Elizabeth loses much of her vitality and even comes close to death due to this condition. This is after the Hunsford proposal. Darcy comes back into Elizabeth's life after the Gardiners inform him of her illness while they visit Pemberley...a trip they had planned to take with Elizabeth.

So Darcy travels to stay at Netherfield and even at Longbourn at times. You have to love that man even more in that he stand by her side through various episodes in which she has vomiting, headaches, fainting, loss of sight, extreme fatigue, etc. Through it all her personality remains the same and so Darcy continues to love Elizabeth and to propose to her.

Mary was a surprise as she, more than any of the sisters, steps in to tend to and nurse Elizabeth. Jane has become engaged to a returned Bingley and so is planning her wedding and buying her trousseau. Mrs. Bennet downplays Elizabeth's illness and continues to want to be the center of attention, which Elizabeth is taking away from her.

There is a point at which I was close to tears. And other reviewers have said that they indeed did cry. As I type I think about the fact that this illness is real and the author is one of those affected by it. So you must know she writes with first hand knowledge.

This story does have a happy ending in that Elizabeth survives. However, be warned, she is not fully healed...ever. There is an epilogue which I always like to have at the end of these stories.

In Essentials is definitely a unique story with a premise that may not please everyone, but which compelled me to buy and read the book.

In this novel, Elizabeth Bennet becomes suddenly ill after the Hunsford proposal and the unknown and uncurable disease changes her life dramatically. Elizabeth’s strength is forever lost, and many of the simple joys of life that she took for granted, such as taking a long walk in the countryside, are no longer a reality.

As you may imagine the tone of the book is very dark and the characters will suffer throughout the entire story, but it is beautifully written and certainly different then anything you’ve seen before in JAFF.

I personally loved the premise and the unique approach the author took because Ms. Williams explored the human nature, and the characters reactions to adversity, in a blunt but honest manner. Most characters behaved as expected, and it was precisely the fact that they all remained who they truly were in essentials that made me enjoy the book. My particular favorite was Mary Bennet, who did not surprise me, but was able to stand out in the narrative and seemed the most balanced character in the entire storyline.

As I mentioned before, I did like the premise, and I especially liked the fact that the ending is not the usual fairy tale one, so that was certainly not an issue for me (even if it may be for others), however, I would have liked to see more plot development. At moments, I felt the story was not progressing, or that it was solely focused on Elizabeth’s health progression, which may have been the authors goal, but I personally would have liked more drivers in the plotline.

Nevertheless, In Essentials is a tale of courage and optimism that I enjoyed reading. It shows the readers a love stronger than everything, with Mr. Darcy showing a devotion, tenderness and courage that will reach everyone’s hearts, and with an Elizabeth Bennet who will make everyone proud due to her obstinacy, strength, and positivity (even if too forgiving in my opinion).

4.5* rounded up (story)
This very emotional story takes us through Elizabeth enduring a debilitating illness and Darcy who supports her throughout. There are some very poignant moments that brought me to tears. The story is also well told by Stevie Zimmerman in the Audible version which I give 5 stars. I was grateful for the happy ending, as I was afraid this story might not have one. Very well written and I do recommend it.

Lizzy with a long term illness

Lizzy begins to suffer an unknown illness after returning home from visiting the Collins.

Darcy finds out and a sweet but angsty story leads to many changes in canon.

This is such a good book!
Watching Elizabeth's wit and irrepressible personality through the lens of devastating illness was compelling. Darcy's love and devotion are a joy to see.

I thoroughly recommend that you read this 🙂

This book was okay, I liked it but didn't love it. It may just be the overall melancholy and depressing feel of the story, but while the writing wasn't bad, it just wasn't very engaging or enjoyable to me. There were some lovely things in the story such as a truly heroic Darcy that was everything kind, caring and longsuffering that demonstrated the unselfish nature of true love. If the story had a faster pace I may have found it more engaging, but it was terribly slow and I found it easy to walk away from and I never felt in a hurry to return. Some members of the Bennet family were kind of cartoonish and extreme and some aspects of the story were too unrealistic to be believable.
As I said, the writing was good and I would definitely read more from this author with hopefully a better and more interesting plot.

Inspirational

This was a really sad story that had me in tears through most of it. I think everyone has been in a position where, either because they were the patient or the caregiver, people have shown their compassion and love to another in difficult times by stepping up and doing what needs done. Unfortunately, there are also the other's that are self centered and wouldn't bother to lift a finger but are more than willing to let everyone know what an inconvenience they suffer. The old saying 'You find out who your friends are' never rings more true.
The author's personal experience explained at the end of the book, along with the medical information provided, makes this book even more special. To think that a real person has gone through these trials and written this story is just incredible. Best of health to Helen Williams. God Bless.

What If Elizabeth Developed a Mysterious Illness?

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Source: Gift from Publisher

TYPE OF NOVEL: Pride and Prejudice Variation

THE PREMISE: No longer vibrant and full of vitality, Elizabeth Bennet is suffering from a mysterious malaise that saps her strength, produces excruciating headaches, and unsettles her stomach. When Mr. Darcy discovers this, he makes haste to Netherfield with Mr. Bingley in hopes of improving Elizabeth’s opinion of him. But even though Elizabeth feelings for Mr. Darcy have underwent “so material a change,” will Elizabeth’s indifferent health and uncertain future cause her to abandon any chance of love and happiness…?

WHAT I LOVED:

- A Unique Twist: Elizabeth without her spirited liveliness, Elizabeth without her rambling walks, Elizabeth without her independence – such a drastic change! And one I was so eager to explore. Especially since Elizabeth is the picture of vitality, strength, and confidence. And now readers will see what happens when she is stripped of all those things. How does it effect her personality? Does her outlook on life change? I really loved the inventiveness and originality of this premise.

- Firsthand Knowledge: I don’t think it would be a spoiler to say that the condition Elizabeth experiences in this book is one with which the author is very familiar. And knowing that made me love this story even more! I greatly admire the courage and compassion to tell such a story, and to imbue it with all the emotions and experiences that are known to you firsthand. I feel like it is a type of therapy, and I loved that Helen Williams had Jane Austen’s characters be a part of that.

- Sibling Relationships: Elizabeth with her sisters, Mr. Darcy with his sister, even the Fitzwilliam siblings – I loved the focus on different sibling dynamics. And I loved the seeing the “shoe on the other foot” so to speak, with some of Elizabeth’s sisters selflessly taking care of her. It contrasted greatly with the siblings who were apathetic and intolerant. The strong and supportive sibling relationships were moving and heartwarming to witness.

- Valuing What Matters: Threaded through this tale is a moving message about recognizing what is most important. It’s not a person’s looks or abilities – it’s their character and their heart that matter most. Elizabeth Bennet lost a lot of what others saw to be most attractive about her, and with her outward changes their treatment and opinions about her altered. But the people who, from the beginning, saw the worth of her character continued to cherish and value her sterling qualities through her alterations.

WHAT I WASN’T TOO FOND OF:

- A Muted Impact: With such a striking alteration in Elizabeth’s life, I was thinking it would produce a drastic impact on Darcy’s and Elizabeth’s journey to each other. And while it did change their journey in some aspects, I felt like we didn’t witness enough of their mental and emotional challenges with these new developments. It sometimes felt like their acceptance was easy and quick. I wouldn’t have minded spending more time in the characters’ heads. And although it may be bleak and dark, I would have loved to have felt more connection to their emotions.

- Busy Nothings: There were some slower parts of the story where nothing of great consequence was taking place. Plans were being discussed for a long time (i.e. the trip to Wales), extended family members were talked about in detail but not introduced on page for a long time (Fitzwilliam relations), and day-to-day events that didn’t really move the story forward sometimes made the story arc feel a little flat. Even with Lady C’s infamous visit…

CONCLUSION:

Despite my quibbles, In Essentials is a beautiful and inspiring Pride and Prejudice tale about facing unexpected changes in life with courage and fortitude. I appreciated the uniqueness and poignancy of this premise, and I applaud the author for her courage to channel her own journey, and illustrate some of her experiences and trials with our beloved Elizabeth Bennet.

In Essentials: a fabulous story!

Not your everyday, happily ever after Pride and Prejudice story, due to Lizzie's illness, which is explained by the Author, Helen Williams! Who turned her own trials into a wonderful story, that made me laugh and cry, and hold onto my seat, as they say! But, it truly was a Happily Ever After, where Lizzie's had her Mr Darcy by her side through her ups and down's, while she fought to regain her health, and enjoy a quiet life with some of her sisters and her wonderful Husband, Mr Darcy! And even enjoyed some traveling, at a quiet pace! All in all, who can ask for more!?

Elizabeth’s heath takes a turn

Elizabeth’s health takes a turn which brings Darcy back to Netherfield with Mr. Bingley. Darcy’s heart tells him he can no longer hesitate if he wants to have the love of his life.
This sis a heartbreaking and touching story. Elizabeth’s health issues are not specifically stated but given the symptoms one can image what may be causing it, but given the time the medical professionals didn’t really know much.
I enjoyed this story.

Five Stars for an Original Road

Complexity and Compassion kept me riveted. If you can't abide angst, you'd be best to stay away. But for those of us who shudder at scripted reality shows, this is a venture into the Regency period with far more realism than the standard compromise or forced marriage scenarios usually see. This is a tough voyage but very well written and complete. Bravo, dear author and congratulations.

Touching and emotional

This is one of the best variations I’ve read and quite heart-wrenching despite the happy ending. Reading the Author’s Note at the end makes the story and Elizabeth Bennet’s medical condition most credible and affecting. This is one of the best versions I’ve read Elizabeth depicted: strong, resilient in the face of all odds, generous, forgiving and possessing so much forbearance that’s would put heroines of historical moves to shame. As much as I would like to picture her as healthy and as physically capable as a woman who walked 3 miles from Longbourne to Netherfield Park to care for her beloved sister, this novel gives a different image of Elizabeth Bennet; suffering yet resilient in love.

Furthermore, Mr. Darcy is the most honorable and lovable version in this variation. Steadfast, compassionate and unapologetically affectionate and loving towards the woman who captured his heart. He makes no compromises. When he sets out to have Elizabeth Bennet as his life partner, he never relents. His show of emotions and fits of tears do him well and gives him more humanity and character. I never thought it could be possible to love Mr. Darcy more. This variation made it possible.

The turn for the worse of many other characters was quite a shock but I’m sure the author had her reasons: mainly to show the comparison between those who truly loved the ailing heroine and those who didn’t care regardless of whether they be family or friend. I am sure the Author, with her experiences, felt that keenly in her life.

Finally, this variation is very well-written. I most especially enjoyed the banter and humorous exchanges between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. So many of them are heartbreaking and so romantic that they are swoon worthy. Highly recommended for every JAFF, particularly those who love Pride and Prejudice. Well done to the author!

Helen Williams – In Essentials – Reviewed 10/15/21 – Read 10/14/21

Here we are in a new P&P Variation but with a very serious and unusual twist to the storyline!

Months after his disastrous proposal to Elizabeth Bennett, Fitzwilliam by happen chance runs into her aunt and uncle that are touring Pemberley. When he realizes that they are related he finds out that Elizabeth is seriously ill, and the doctors can do nothing about it. Of course, he has by this time pondered all of the things that Elizabeth told him and has concluded that he needs to change and do it now. He requests that they contact him when they return and to please keep him updated on the situation. Shortly after this chance meeting his friend Bingley arrives for a visit, Darcy confesses that he had done him an injustice and then told him the whole story about Jane and that Elizabeth was very ill. They decide that they should visit the ladies and see what happens.

Join Darcy and Elizabeth and this emotional journey through her illness…Helen Williams uses her own journey with this illness as her inspiration for this touching and emotional storyline.

What did I like? I have to tell you that I was impressed by this book, I cried like a baby and could not lay it down. This was such an emotional roller coaster, with the illness, the proposal, the doubts, the actions of Darcy, and the whole family journey. I highly recommend this book to everyone, whether you are a P&P fan or not.

What will you like? This book is nothing like anything that you have read in the past. Not that all those other books are not good, but the fact that what Elizabeth is going through is so real that you can feel it through the author's words. I have been reading for many years and I don’t think that I have ever been so touched by a storyline like this one hit me. Please understand that this is real, that it can happen, and that the author is sharing something very special with us!!!! Helen Williams's new book “In Essentials” is available NOW!!

3.5 stars

While the premise was interesting, the pacing was entirely too slow. For example, Darcy’s Welsh interlude (and exchanges) should have been cut. In addition, the endless scenes where Lizzy is lightly sick (at home, then on a London trip, and then at home again) should have been condensed. The same geographical distance could have been covered by having him go to Pemberley. Finally, Elizabeth never told off Lydia and Mrs Bennet. That end needed to be tied.

That said, Ms Williams does offer some nice turns of phrase, including: “And there is something mesmerising about watching the snow fall.” “Is there?” “Do you not think so? Perhaps it is just me. I believe it is the contrast between the visual and the audible. So much swirling activity accomplished in perfect, unbroken silence.” Beautiful.

I also have a couple of quibbles. First, WHY do some authors insist on having their characters travel north or west from Hertfordshire via London? That’s half a day’s drive, and it’s not as if their coaches have to make a connection at King’s Cross before they continue their journey. Secondly, how does she know her pupils are dilated, when she’s mostly blind and has told no one in her family (who would then examine her pupils)?

In this Pride and Prejudice variation on returning from Rosings Elizabeth falls very ill resulting in Mary travelling with the Gardiners, and Lydia not going to Brighton. How will this affect the future of the Bennet daughters. With another disappointing pairing for Mary.
Overall an enjoyable variation

Devoted Darcy

A 'what if' story where Elizabeth develops a chronic mystery illness after she and Darcy part at Rosings. She loses her physical vivacity but none of her indomitable wit. In essentials she remains very much as she ever was, so Darcy of course remains steadfast in his devotion to her through her ordeal.

Its a lovely story and well-written but it wasn't a pleasant read for me because of the subject matter. To see Elizabeth Bennet lose her healthy constitution, an essential trait she is known for in canon, is very sad. To envision her in the unenviable position of an Ann de Bourgh type is something I don't care to contemplate.

Prepare the hankies! Yes, there is sadness and angst in this story. But the love and determination that shine through are simply lovely. There is also some wonderful humor that I enjoyed a lot. Darcy's love and devotion to Elizabeth is wonderful to see. Of course there is a lot of sadness as Elizabeth's health deteriorates and reaches a crisis where they all believe that she will not survive. Fortunately that is not the case. The growth of Elizabeth, Darcy, Jane, Bingley, and especially Mary are heartwarming.

I believe this is the third time I have read this since it first came out and I'm glad to have purchased it.

I highly recommend this book.

Well worth the read

This is a well-constructed sympathetic story of redemption. Elizabeth and Darcy’s love survives even through circumstances that would test the most stout hearted of us.
(Spoiler alert) I have a chronic illness and I can attest to the fact that it stretches you and everyone you love to an extent you couldn’t have previously imagined. Your best and worst traits are exaggerated, along with those of your loved ones. I feel this author has done a fantastic portrayal of the effect a chronic illness has on the patient and all their relationships.
Bravo!

As the blurb states, Elizabeth has a life-threatening illness, which causes Darcy and Bingley to return to Netherfield after Darcy's confession of interference in the latter's romance with Jane. The conversation between the two was delightfully written. It made me think that the rest of the book would be similarly lighthearted. I was wrong. The description of Elizabeth's illness throughout the book was agonizing. It had me in tears several times. It isn't a book I would read again, but I am so glad I happened to add it to my KU queue. It isn't one I will ever forget.

Very interesting sickness

Reading this story taught me about a disease I have never heard of. I am happy the author of this book came through it so well, or we would have been missing a good writer. As one of my favorite ministers always said, "the wealthiest place on earth is the graveyard. It holds many unwritten books, as well as many inventions". I gave the story four stars because I like very short books, especially when there is bad news involved.

An excellent P&P variation!

What a fantastic story! From beginning to end, I was riveted and could barely put the book down to do anything else.

The writing was spot on, admirably honoring Austen's pace, diction, and wit. The plot itself was unique and quite moving--I actually cried during one particularly poignant passage--and one I won't soon forget.

If you are a fan of P&P variations, you must read this story!

I enjoyed this different twist on the Pride and Prejudice story. It was interesting to see Mr. Darcy in the role of caregiver to Elizabeth. His steadfastness and devotion to Elizabeth were sweet. I listened to this on Audible and knew I would enjoy the narration because I've. heard Stevie Zimmerman on many an Austen audiobook. I had wished that the story had a bit more time to resolve towards the end as many of the of details were quickly resolved and connected in less than one chapter.

Essentially good

If you like your Regency light and fluffy, this isn’t the book for you. There is a great deal of angst and suffering which illuminate and forge the true nature of the characters. It is a very well written book, and the vivid picture of living with chronic illness resonated with my own experiences. Yet there is wit, humour, tenderness and love aplenty. I found it compelling.

sadly beautiful

Have you best handkerchiefs ready while reading this story of tragedy and romance. What if Lizzy was struck down with a mysterious illness after Hunsford-Would she and Darcy ever find their way to love when she’s now an invalid? This story was so beautiful for how much he loved and treasured her.

strength under trial

In this variation Elizabeth and Darcy’s love is tested by a force that they aren’t able to do anything about but it fortifies their love for each other. Family jealousy and indifference can cause health issues or complicate them as we see here. Very interesting read and very well done.

Lizzy Bennet is known for health, fitness and an irrepressible joie de vivre. In this variation, a dreadful illness of unknown origin interrupts their love affair before Darcy gets a second chance at courtship.

This book is more than a P&P variation. It is a window into the frustration of an unknown illness and the grief that comes from the loss of good health, hopes and dreams.

Oh dear! Spoilers alert too!

I'm sorry, but even with the authors explanation of Lizzys illness at the end of the book, I found the suddennness from deaths door, to waking up next day completely cured, was too much! Lizzy was a healthy lass and it was unbelieveable. Blind one day, cured the next??!

So sad but wonderful

This story really puts one through the emotional wringer! However, it is really well-written and well worth the read. I am very happy the author tells us what Elizabeth's syndrome is and that she is able to persevere so well. Yay for loving Darcies and boo for selfish family members.

An unusual but touching adaptation!

Unlike almost all the other variations, this one tells a very compelling story of true love and what it means to accept one another for better or for worse. Credit goes to the author for weaving her personal experiences into a Regency tale so seamlessly, that too a P&P re-telling!

A very well written, touching story. Great job!
