Sooooo ..... after being locked out of my Kindle app I've decided to have a bit of a clean up in my various "Books Read" lists. First cabs off the rank are my DNF pile. If I DNF'd it and have absolutely NO intention of reading it again, I'm changing my rating to 1 🌟 and deleting it off my Kindle. Life is too short at my age for crappy books!!

Original Review:

I normally love Willow Rose's books and I enjoyed the first book in the Jack Ryder series but try as I might I just couldn't finish this book. At 44% into the DNF pile it goes!
The premise sounded exciting and the writing was good, but there were such glaring inconsistencies and faults in the technical medical examiner side of things that it distracted you from the story. With the wealth of information available to authors these days there is no excuse for poor research. A homicide detective, even a seasoned one, finding a medical significance by looking at a skeleton BEFORE a medical examiner notices it??? I don't think so.

In the first book I gave Jack Ryder’s investigative skills the benefit of the doubt, in the second I started to get an inkling that he wasn't really up to the job. Now that I’ve finished the 3rd book I’m totally ready to say that Jack’s not a convincing detective. He cares more about surfing (to clear his head of course) than to go looking for a boy that’s been kidnapped.
I know it’s the author that creates the story line and gives shape to the characters. So yes, she does a poor job of shaping Jack Ryder into a credible detective and, frankly, I think it’s overrated to call this a mystery/detective series. I already used the terms 'flaky' and 'flimsy' in my review of the second Ryder book and it’s even more apparent here. It's just a pity that Ryder comes across as a callous and incompetent police investigator. What with the life of a child on the line? Any parent would know the feeling, but no Jack sits on his butt or goes surfing or is more preoccupied with his flaky neurotic country start fiancee. So disappointing. Of course he sprints into action when his boy is taken - figures.
Although I liked the children, especially the six-year old twins, Austin and Abigail in the previous books, here, in book 3, I found them sounding unauthentic; their level of thinking and speaking was not age-appropriate. It felt like they were much older. So yes, unauthentic.
Spoiler alert: I cringed reading about the torture of the box to which 7-year old Noah was subjected. Totally freaked me out.
This book is a light weight and not in a good way: so *1,5* rating overall.

Unbelievable

And not in a good way.
I realise that books are given free for a reason, that sane people would never pay for them! !
There should be an option for leaving NO stars.

We are once again thrown into the life of Det. Jack Ryder and his family. His fiancée is accused of murder, his daughter is anorexic, and Jack seems to be clueless.
Young boys are being kidnapped, held, tortured and killed. Jack's man suspect has a great alibi; he was in prison.
I somewhat enjoyed the book. I like Willow's writing style; it normally has a nice flow and is easy to read. This book had many editing issues. There were typos, spelling errors, and inconsistancies in the story.
For example, in Chapter 46 when Hector was trying to find his family in Cuba. First Hector and Raul are asking their way through a crowd for hours searching for them, then Hector is going back to the boat that Raul is guarding. When did they separate.
There are times like when Jack realizes that Austin's misspelling of his name ( using an e instead of an i) is a code, and then figures it's a phone number. Too farfetched and unbelievable.

I'm still going to read book 4 Black Jack. But I'm not a fan of the Jack Ryder series.

Scary though it may be, most of this book is based on actual events. Fortunately, Willow has tamed down her violent descriptions especially pertaining to the children. At times, she gets a bit overboard in her crime scenes. This one is quite tame compared to some from the Emma Frost series. No one denies how much Cubans have endured over the decades of Communism. Events depicted in this novel could very well have happened.

Jack does well as the lead as usual. He has a long way to go in character development to gain the popularity of Rebekka & Emma from Willow's two popular series. Shannon still strikes me as iffy & I haven't decided I like her yet. Willow does a good job developing the villains from this novel & carrying over from Book 2. If you haven't read the first two in the series, they're all written to stand alone & it takes little time to catch on. Still not as good as the first book, but not a bad read, I give it 4 stars.

Really struggling to want to keep reading the series. The main character reacts to events in an inconsistent manor sometimes in my opinion. Then I realized the author is a woman and I wonder if that has something to do with the lead character's actions. I found it hard to take the relationship abuse with the women in the series. Seemed that all men were predominantly bad and women were weak and intimidated. Until they weren't I guess.
Really overloaded the constant impending/occurring tragedies. Felt like it was trying to force the tension. Again thought the main character reacted/said/thought things that were not a consistent character. Also thought he had the crazy abusive jealous controlling aspects of her previous partner and she just went right back to being timid and doubtful. Ended up really not wanting to read more in this series.

Willow has some great story lines but the writing is a little like a high school creative writing assignment. I agree with other reviewers that her dialogue is unrealistic. The writing seems to get worse with each book. Halfway through this one, I almost just put it down and gave up. She also has problems with her continuity. A baby was born Christmas day but her 3rd birthday was Christmas Eve? There were several times, from one page to the next that facts changed. Once a character is introduced it isn't necessary to continue using both first and last names. And the redundant use of "Blah, blah" she said, addressed to So and So. I think her editor really drops the ball letting all of these mistakes get through. Doesn't anyone proof-read anymore?

Jack Ryder #3

Scott Kingston is afraid of monsters. He thinks they're lurking outside his bedroom window at night when his mother tucks him in. He asks his mother to keep the light on to scare the monsters away. But that light is exactly what lures the kidnapper to his window, and the next morning, Scott is gone. Twenty-eight years later, Vernon Johnston is released from prison after spending the biggest part of his life on death row, convicted of having kidnapped and killed Scott Kingston. As so many times before, he has appealed his case, but this time, the judge decides to let him go. A witness has finally told the truth, and there is no longer sufficient evidence to keep him in jail. But shortly after Vernon Johnson is released, and returned to his childhood town, another child disappears, and soon all eyes are on him again.

There's lots going on in Cocoa Beach. Detective Jack Ryder's fiancée, Shannon King, is accused of murder, Emily is not eating and Jack doesn't seem to have noticed. Young boys are being kidnapped, tortured, and killed. All this is taking place while Jack is trying to build the house of his dreams for Shannon and their extended family to live in. I'm not sure if Shannon is the right woman for Jack. He needs someone more stable in his life. The story jumps back and forth in time, there are three different stories taking place, and we find out their connection at the end of the book.

I enjoyed this book. This is the third book in the series so I have gotten use to the writers style of jumping from character and time. This book felt like it had three different cases or stories going on so you had to concentrate or you will find it confusing and it is only at the end that you learn how they are connected. The reason I keep listening to the series is because I like the characters, especially Jacks home life. The badies are certainly evil and the type that you love to hate. I can't wait to start the next book.
Vernon is released from jail and another young boy disappears from his bed, the very crime a witness changing his testimony means Vernon was cleared of. A young boys remains are found and it is soon prove that Vernon could not have been disappear because the boy died after he went to jail. Now it's up to Jack to find the real killer but with a storm rolling in Jack finds himself and his own family caught in the centre of the storm when a killer targets him. With a new baby on the way and one of his four children already in danger who will Jack choose to save.
The narrator is okay but not the greatest he is to laid back and you need to speed up the story or it is a bit monotonous

Jack Ryder is back in the the 3rd of this series. He is living with Shannon, his girlfriend - country singer, her daughter and his three children. They are now planning the build the house of their dreams in Cocoa Beach. Shannon has one more surprise, she is going to have a baby. So Jack is happy in his life.

Vernon Johnson has been in prison for 26 years and is now being released for the murder of a child. The witness now says he really never saw Vernon, so they have no evidence to hold him for the murder. But now that Vernon is released, another boy is missing and Jack is on the case.

This books moves along fast and does go back and forth with an intertwining story, but as usual, it all fits together..Jack is busy as ever trying to find the kidnapper and the child before he is killed. Then his son, Austin, comes up missing. Is it the same kidnapper. Shannon is always facing charges of killing her first husband. So, as usual, Jack is pulled at both ends.

I love these books and will continue on with the next one!

The House that Jack Built

It has been some time since I read the two previous books to this one. I had forgotten many of the details of Jack's life. It took me at least a third of this book to figure it out, along with some digging deep into my memory. I couldn't quite remember what his job was. No where did it tell me. I had forgotten about Shannon. No where did it introduce her or tell who she was. The same with all of the children. I couldn't exactly remember who they all were. If I had read this at the same time I read the first two books, I imagine I would have given it 5 stars. But there was no background, no introducing who the characters were or anything about them. It was very frustrating to be so bewildered in a book I had been so looking forward to reading.

The House that Jack Built (Jack Ryder #3) was a good read by Willow Rose. Scott is afraid of monsters and thinks they're outside his bedroom window. He asks his mom to leave the light on, but it's the light that a kidnapper sees before taking him. Twenty eight years after Vernon Johnson is convicted of kidnapping and killing Scott, he is released from jail. Unfortunately after he is released, another child disappears from his hometown he just returned to. Jack is building the home of his dreams, while at the same time Shannon is hoping to not end up in jail for murder. She is currently pregnant and all the stress is taking its toll on her. I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to read more by Willow Rose.

"But ... Jack Hasn't Time To Build House, Only to Build His Family)

Twenty-eight years ago, Vernon Johnson had been convicted of the murder of young Scott Kingston. After many appeal hearings, the judge decides to free him. He returns to his home town of Cocoa Beach, Florida. Not longer after, another child disappears, and Vernon becomes the main suspect ... again. Jack Ryder is busy planning to build a home for Shannon and their kids. She's pregnant and she still is under suspicion of killing her ex-husband. Plus, the land which Jack will build their dream home upon has dark secrets. Find out what they are ... and read to the very end. Another winner for The Queen of Scream!

Willow Rose is a fantastic writer. She pulls you in right from the start. I have read many of her series and the "Jack" series is proving to be just as good as the others. The characters are all described well and I find myself sharing in their joys, heartaches, and fears! If you are a Willow Rose reader, you will love it. If you haven't read her books, give them a try. They are much better read in order, as things flow easier, but honestly, Willow Rose does a fine job of briefly explaining the history of the characters in each book. If you're looking for a book to read, try this one... or any of her books!

This is only the 2nd book I've read by this author. While I ended up thoroughly enjoying the 1st one, I didn't like the flashbacks. This story didn't seem to be as bad on that front, and for that I was grateful. It also didn't introduce a ton of characters in the first 10 chapters, so that was a plus as well.
The ending was a bit confusing, but I'm not sure where I lost the plot...
Overall, I liked the storyline. I felt like there were some missing pieces, but that could be from not having read the first two books in the series.
Thinking I will try one more by this author (the next in this series) before deciding whether I'll persue further writings by her.

I’m beginning to think I’m the one who’s crazy!! I paid for & downloaded yet another Willow Rose book about Jack Ryder. This one not as bad as the 2nd JR but I can not get my head around the way Willow Rose uses words. Also I agree with other reviewers that Jack & the Police Department are bumbling fools! The receptiveness in the dialogue is tiresome, the characters have become so bland, the story line twists too much & makes no sense. Jack’s eldest daughter’s eating problem gets noted, then overlooked! And on and on we go!

Oh my Oh My Oh My Oh My
Willow Rose is not only an excellent writer but she is a great educator as well. I learned a lot in this excruciatingly painful yet true story. Hold onto your loved ones tightly fur you never know what could happen. The tears are rolling down my cheeks. Jack Ryder is a savior, even thru one of the worst storms possible & thru all his angst, troubles of his own, his physical & mental pain. Too bad nothing is mentioned in the end of how Austin is going after all he went thru. Perhaps I need to read the next in the series to find out.

Very Entertaining

I chose four stars because the book was chopped up into sections Rather than flowing in a linear fashion. At times this is an effective method of writing. But for some reason it interfered with following the storyline. I enjoyed the plot and most of the characters except for Shannon who didn't have much structure. All in all, I enjoyed the book and recommend it to anyone who likes books in this genre.

'The House that Jack Built' was another edge of my seat, gripping, thriller ride with a ton of twists and turns. This series has kept me glued to the pages since book one and has yet to let go. The characters are such an array of personalities. Jack was definitely pushed in this book. The storyline was intense. Shannon is trying to hold on, and I believe she's stronger than she thinks. I look forward to reading more. A must add to your tbr list.

Book three in the Jack Ryder series and the stories keep getting better and better. This story involved the Castro Revolution and the cruelty that ruined so many lives. The trauma inflicted upon adults and their children. The author understands childhood trauma and how much damage can be done. The author introduced another character that turned his to be the love of his mother's life. Jack because this man hurt his father , misjudged this man until the man proved Jack wrong. Very good ending

Last night I finished "The House that Jack Built." Wow! What a read! What a mind Willow Rose has! Each and every book of hers is totally different, different characters, different themes, and all are mind-blowing! What a writer! And she looks so innocent! A lot of her stories are taken from real life and then Willow get a hold of them and takes them and her readers to the sky and beyond! Write on!

Fantastic!

Enjoyed every minute of the story and was glad to see that the case that Jack was working on from the previous book was finally solved. Now we have to see if Shannon will be left alone because of what she finds back at her home in Nashville. All in all this is a great series but Ms. Willow needs to get a better proof reader. Some words are missing and some are spelled wrong. Otherwise it's a great book series.

After reading #2 which was, obviously, leading into a continuing story, I took the bait and had to get #3. Jack and Shannon are still together, although there are a few problems in the relationship (like Shannon not being used to his fighting kids). And Jack leaves them with her a lot, while he is investigating some child abductions. I love a good book by Willow Rose that holds my interest and makes me look forward to reading more!
