While his partner is away on his honeymoon, FBI Agent Ragnar Johnson is continuing to interview the suspects in the Embracer case. During an interview with one of them, he realizes that former victim Megan Law is in trouble. The tale that unfolds delivers suspense and sparks as the two share a safe house and Megan uses her gift with words to listen to the suspects.
When a package containing a grizzly discovery arrives at Megan’s NY office addressed to her, she agrees to accompany Ragnar back to DC. These two have chemistry but also bump heads until they work together. Megan brings her dog and the two of them work to crack the case.
The case has many layers, twists and turns. I am loving the paranormal elements of the Law siblings’ gifts. When Patrick Law, a criminal psychologist, learns his sister Megan is in trouble, he heads to DC. The conversations between Patrick and Ragnar cracked me up, as did Megan’s reactions.
Danger is never far behind, and Graham delivered some intense scenes that kept me reading into the wee hours. These books are familiar, like a warm blanket and perfect for snuggling up with. They pull you in and keep you engaged.
This mini-series within the Krewe of Hunters series featuring the Law siblings and the overall story arc of the Embracer has been a good one, and I cannot wait for the next book, Voice of Fear, featuring Patrick Law. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer
Now, THIS book is why I fell in love with the Krewe of Hunters series years ago. And, I have read them all. The second book in a trilogy within the series is suspenseful, intense and clever with a slow to build romance. Each book features one of a triplet whose "special gift" aids and enhances the already "gifted" Krewe members. I am very much looking forward to the third book.
On a side note: Thank goodness Ms. Graham has finally restrained herself from her heavy handed use of the exclamation point. It made a much smoother and enjoyable read.
As we quickly discover in Aura of Night, the killer might be more cunning (this picks up where Sound of Darkness left off) and is now coming for Megan. Ragnar, Mark's partner, swoops in right away to keep Megan safe. Megan, like Colleen has a unique talent as well that helps her and Ragnar save victims and hone in on the killer. Because Megan and Ragnar already know each other from Sound of Darkness, their romance is a little different. Megan has a crush on Ragnar, and these two kind of dance around each other as the tension builds. I think I liked this couple more than Colleen and Mark!
Cheesy. I rolled my eyes so many times. And the dialogue seems almost juvenile. I had never read this author before and I wondered if she was a new writer. I was so surprised to see that she was an experienced author. I would never pick up another of her books.
When I realized I wasn't going to finish this book in the time allotted by the public library, I turned to the last three chapters to read the climax and the resolution. This novel does not disappoint. It picks up where Mark and Colleen's book ends. Megan Law, Colleen's sister, is supposed to be writing a book about her kidnapping by the Embracer. While sitting in her New York office, she is visited by Special Agent Ragnar Johanson, who informs her she is still in danger. A package arrives with gruesome content, which convinces Megan she needs to go with Ragnar to a safe house. Together, they end up working on the Embracer case, trying to determine just how many predators fall under the title of The Embracer. Colleen and Mark return from their honeymoon to work unofficially on the case. Not to be left out, Patrick Law, a criminal psychologist and Megan and Colleen's brother, joins the team.
I thoroughly enjoyed what I got to complete of this novel, and I do plan to check it out again from the library to read the chapters I had to skip. I found the characterization solid and the plot well-developed. The dialogue fits each character's persona. The descriptions are reasonable and believable. The pacing did slow down in the middle, but this didn't take away too much from the plots and subplots. This also effected the tension. It could have sped up and gotten tighter within the three chapters I had to skip over. By hopping over to the last three chapters, I was surprised to find out how extensive the Embracer ring is and who the next Embracer was in the novel. I understand that the third book in this trilogy within the Krewe of Hunters series is to be Patrick's book. I can't wait for it to be released. Adult situations.
This book has Megan and Ragnar as the main characters (sister of Colleen and partner of Mark respectively in the previous book Sound of Darkness). The story is a continuation from that book dealing with some unresolved loose ends.
The romance is a sort of enemies to lovers trope, Megan thinks of herself as bookish and airy-fairy. She doesn't believe she can deal with the harsh realities faced by these gun-toting FBI agents. But she comes to change her mind and even allows her brother Patrick and Ragnar to train her in using a gun and eventually carries a concealed one herself. (This is such a cultural shock for those of us outside of USA)
There's not much to the storyline except for them trying to catch the rest of the men and the mastermind who are part of the "Embracer" brotherhood and saving some victims in the meantime. There is a ghostly helper Alfie, who has been present in both books so far, but surprisingly, HG has kept ghost assistance at a minimum in these couple of books.
The book ends with another revelation that will hopefully be resolved in the next book Voice of Fear. Especially since we've been introduced to the third triplet Patrick and the new FBI recruit Jordan. These three books probably should be read together as a trilogy if you want a more satisfactory reading experience.
Overall, I felt pretty much the way I did with the previous book. Hopefully the third book will provide the climax I think I'm missing so far.
This book is the first I have read in the Krewe of Hunters series. I know I am late in the series. But I loved this book and it has made me want to read all of them. I believe there are 48 books in the series so far and this is book #39. Now in this book you get a story but I found this story is going to keep going and I am here for it. This series has crime, various different relationships and a little supernatural. You really need to read these books. I highly recommend!
Megan and Agent Ragnar are the main characters in this book. Megan survived getting kidnapped in the previous book but it's not over yet. Someone at the top is still pulling strings and they were behind The Embracer murders & kidnappings. When Megan's life is threatened again Ragnar comes to protect her. Suddenly, she's having dreams about the location of kidnapped victims. There are too many people involved in these killings. It's a network of men who get a thrill from killing women. However, turns out there may be a connection to an old case of an FBI Agent named Alfie, who's now a ghost but still assists the Krewe. I'm glad that Megan and Ragnar got over their first impressions of each other and came to like each other. I'm very curious as to who is leading the network of killers though. Who is responsible for all of these crimes going back years? Looks like we get to read about the third triplet, Patrick, in the next book.

Courage isn't not being afraid. Courage is doing the right thing even when you are.
Paranormal thriller
Megan Law is stronger and she knows what she must do. She partners with FBI investigator Ragnar Johnson whom they have a very strong chemistry which binds the plot and moves it forward. A killer is on the loose who is bringing other killers in the web - the dark web. Together they piece together how it is being done and bring the killer down from prison.
A special thank you to Harlequin and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
I believe this book starts right up where book 36 left off. It brings all three triplet’s into the dory. The Embracer seems to be still in play, although two men are awaiting in prison for the previous crimes. Coleen, and Mark are on their honey moon, and Patrick in the field in Philadelphia, when one of the serial killers mentions Megan, to Kewe Investigator Ragnar Johnson. She was instrumental in bringing a serial killer to Justice. The wheels begin in motion, and he heads to NY. He arrives in time to see her receive a package, of a decomposing skull. She like her brother, and sister have a gift. She can either read , or listen to something and know where the lie lays, and what the message should be. She was also able to reach out for help to her siblings mentally after she had been taken. Now they need to know if there is a puppet master, over the men in prison. They also suspect they are reaching past the bars to gain new killers, and broaden their group of killers. This was a complex murder mystery. It had quite a few deaths, and murder attempts. Plus a new dog Hugo in it. He was adorable. Their is a slow burn romance also. Other members of the Krewe of Hunters show up, and are actively involved. This is a trilogy, but also part of the Hunter series. I assume the next book will feature a threat to Patrick. I would have given it a five star, but it just seemed to lag, as any new person came on board, to explain the two books up to this part. Usually her books go a lot faster. This seemed to be going faster, than slow way down, and then try and speed up. It was still very good. I gave it a 4 stars.
I find myself extremely puzzled how this book received so many 5 star ratings. I bought it at a used book sale for $0.25 not realizing it is book number 37 of a series. Perhaps the earlier books in the series were much better?
The characters felt flat. The dialogue was surface level, boring, juvenile, and unrealistic. There were so many points where I was rolling my eyes reading this and wanted to give up. The only thing that kept me going was the hope that there would be a mind twisting reveal at the end. However, disappointingly I had figured out “whodunit” the second that character was introduced.
I will give credit to the author for making it easy to follow along despite not having read the previous books in the series.
Aura of Night by Heather Graham is the 37th book in her Krewe of Hunters series. I am a big fan of Heather Graham, as her romance suspense books are always exciting and action packed. Aura of Night is the second book in this trilogy arc. The last book (1st in trilogy arc) was centered on Colleen, who is an FBI agent (with the Krewe Hunters), and in this book, her sister Megan is the lead.
Megan, our heroine, is a book editor, and her publisher wants her to write about her experience when she was kidnapped (mistaken identity, supposed to be Colleen), almost buried alive. Though Megan is back at work, she still has nightmares, and not to mention psychic abilities, such as seeing the dead. When the FBI agent comes to NY, he convinces Megan that she is still in danger, and when she receives a horrific package, she knows that she needs to go to a safe house with the agent, whom she has a crush on.
Ragnar Johanson, our hero, interviews the two men (now in prison) who were responsible in killing multiple women, and he immediately suspects there are more people outside under the guise of The Embracer; and he knows he has to get to Megan. Together they arrive at a safe house, with some other agents, but Megan is determined to work closely with Ragnar to help find the clues, using her abilities; in order to help save other women. Ragnar agrees and Megan joins his investigation. Megan watches Ragnar interview the men in prison, and immediately senses danger for someone else; they race against time to save one woman from being buried alive, and discover another villain. Who truly is the Embracer and how is he puling in strange people to do his deeds?
What follows is a tense exciting thriller that will have Ragnar, Megan, and other members of the Krewe team, working together to save the women. I loved Megan’s dog, Hugo, who was so important in finding those buried. To say too much more would be spoilers, and you need to read this from start to finish, as there are some twists and surprises.
The wild tense ending as we raced to the climax, had me holding my breath to see who will survive. Aura of Night was an exciting, intense, suspenseful, dark story of murder, with a sweet slow burn romance, great couple and lots of action throughout. Once again, Heather Graham gives us a wild, mindboggling thriller, that kept our attention from start to finish. I did like that both Ragnar and Megan, as they made a great couple. If you like intense supernatural thrillers, which is written so very well by Heather Graham, then I suggest you read Aura of Night.
Aura of Night is the second novel in this trilogy within the Krewe of Hunters series. And we are far from done with The Embracer saga; no, unfortunately even more bodies are being discovered, and with the main two suspects in prison awaiting trial… they have the perfect alibi, but Embracer-styled abductions, and murders are still taking place which means there are more killers out there doing their masters’ bidding. When Ragnar gets an overwhelming need to check in on Colleen’s sister, Megan in New York he has no idea of what he’s walking into except all of his senses are telling him to hurry to her rescue. What begins as a terrifying delivery quickly ratchets up to even more danger, and the need to keep Megan safe — too bad Ragnar isn’t going to be able to keep his heart safe as well.
Ragnar’s and Megan’s story is fast-paced with edge-of-your-seat moments that come in a steady flow as more abductions happen, and cold cases suddenly have new meaning. I enjoyed watching Megan’s growth, her use of her unique gift becoming more fine-tuned, and more trusted as the story moves on. She has the ability to “hear” or “listen” to conversations and know the true meaning behind them, as the speakers’ real intentions come through their words. As a book editor, words are her world, yet she’s believing in herself more and more as her insights are helping to save lives, something she, rightfully, feels exuberant about.
I loved her dog, Hugo, almost as much as I loved Mark’s dog, Red. Both are talented in their own unique ways and play a definite part in taking down the bad guys.
Aura of Night is a good example of why I’ve followed the Krewe of Hunters for years now. It’s a fast-paced, action-filled, paranormal romantic suspenseful journey with engaging, believable characters, some nasty villains, a budding romance for Ragnar and Megan… and the first glimmer of closure for one ghostly police officer who is always willing to help. Next up is Patrick Law’s story, Colleen and Megan’s triplet brother. And if his story is anything like the parts he played in this one… then I can’t wait to dive into Voice of Fear.
There is always a beautiful dedication in this novel in memory of another author; one whose name I’ve seen paired with Graham.
The saga continues! I had a feeling this case we’ve been reading about was connected to Sergeant Alfie Parker’s case. I was waiting for “Susie” from Alfie’s case to be declared as the dead woman known as Grace’s friend.
Though I finished the previous novel and picked this one up right away, I had issues remembering who Gary was from the end of the previous novel. Thankfully, I still had my copy from the library, and was able to go back and reread what I was forgetting. Which is that he was shot dead in the head.
We’re now well into almost 40 novels (or more if you count the novellas) of this series. I’m going to be sarcastic in saying “how do Jackson and Angela actually sleep when they are on call for so many missions at once?!” Now maybe nothing else or only 1-2 other missions are underway at the same time. But it feels unrealistic; but so is solving crimes with help from ghosts, right? 😊
I know I'm being unrealistic. I feel as though we've met all these other teams/couples and then *poof* no more. Now some do appear here and there as support to our main characters. But there have been so many teams/couples that it has made my head spin.
I've also noticed more inconsistencies as this series goes deeper.
Ragnar and Megan head to the Krewe office where Ragnar asks Megan if she remembers her last visit there. She speaks about her excitement in meeting one of her favorite authors. In the previous novel when she met a victims boyfriend\author, it was in the hospital waiting room.
Another inconsistency: when Ragnar was looking for Megan in the woods with Hugo, it says that Hugo looked anxiously at Mark. This was a typo. He was looking anxiously at Ragnar, Mark was not in the area.
Looking ahead...
We have been introduced to Colleen‘s and Megan‘s brother, Patrick so we know a story with him is due. I’m curious who his partner will be. Is it the new recruit that went undercover in this novel? And if so, what does that mean for her fiancé?
Special Agent Ragnar Johansen is still working on the case of the Embracer while his partner is on vacation. The perpetrator is in prison. Ragnar interviews him yet again when he gets a very uneasy feeling that the only victim who escaped, Megan Law, may be in extreme danger. He heads to New York only to arrive at the same time as Megan receives a gruesome package. Now he is certain that she is in danger. He convinces her to return with him to DC to a heavily guarded safe house.
Meanwhile, Megan has writer’s block. She is an editor, a job she loves. Her publisher has convinced her to write about her experiences as a serial killer almost victim. Reliving her terror as a victim is the last thing she wants to do, but her publisher persuades her that her story may help other women be more careful, therefore saving lives.
Their investigation is an uphill battle. Megan observes Ragnar’s interviews through a two-way mirror. Her affinity for words helps read behind the perp’s dialogue giving clues to other crimes. Danger and suspense make this a good read. The ghost of a policeman helps the investigation. Ragnar and Megan irritate one another and have since the previous book in the series, but they also respect one another which grows into something more. Recommended.

Ragnar Johansen is a FBI agent who has been compared to a Viking. He is protecting Megan Law, sister of FBI agent Colleen Law. Megan had been saved from being buried alive but is still wanted by the group and Ragnar is determined to keep her safe. He takes her with him to the jail to interview Rory Ayers, a man thought to be The Embracer. He takes women and buries them in a shallow grave and wanted to get Colleen but, when he saw Megan, said she would do.
Ayers is smart and cunning and plays everyone against each other but Ragnar sees through him. He just doesn't know how he gets others to do his evil deeds. It has to be someone on the inside that is getting his orders out but who. Then one man is caught and tells his story to Ragnar. He met a man in a strip club one night. The man (who is thought to be the unknown John Smith) gave him the code to use in a Dark Web site. After he used it, the site dissolved. He is afraid of Ayers and wants to go to another facility. Jackson Crow makes it happen.
Ragnar thinks he is keeping Megan safe but a shootout occurs at a range and Megan is taken. She awakes in a coffin and hears two voices but opens her eyes to see the jail guard talking in two voices. She sends messages telepathically to her sister but Ragnar hears her and arrives to save her. The corrupt jail guard is shot and might not make it.
The group still hasn't found the unknown man given the name of John Smith who is head of the organization. No one is safe until the man is found and taken out.
To begin, this is the weirdest ‘talent’ ever and I had to jump that suspension of disbelief. It really made me fall back in love with the series. It's really good pacing and tension, and nice to see lots of saves in a murder mystery
The dynamic of ‘we had a one night stand that one time and now we’re awkwardly catching feelings’ was amusing and their chemistry was fun. One scene made me want more international ghost stories.
On a more eyeroll worthy note: You can tell this was written post 2020 in the fact they take time out to have a full conversation of a few bad apples in this and the last book. It’s amusing and eye roll worthy at once- if you’re not going to give the topic the depth and nuance it deserves, just don’t address it. The fact it happens multiple times makes me sigh. Some of the not quite commentary makes me laugh, but I have to give it to Graham that she always goes out of her way to show the people society deems as 'unworthy' with care and humanity.
The dialogue she writes is so weird half the time. It’s overly formal, over explains things in the most complicated way, and sounds unnatural. It’s a very ‘no one talks like this’ thing. That said, it's more of a nitpick at this point, since it's just the way she writes. I like that this case is focused on the ones real police would spend the least amount of time and effort on. This isn’t just one missing person leads to the more important one, but each of these cases matter, not only to the characters but us readers.
I found this series with the last installment and it involved Megan's sister, Colleen, who is an FBI agent for the Krewe Hunters. Megan is a book editor who has been asked to write a book about her experience when she was visiting Colleen and kidnapped when she was mistaken for her sister by The Embracer and nearly buried alive. Her experience has left her with nightmares and she is having a hard time concentrating. Ragnar Johanson is now working the case and while interviewing the suspect he is lead to believe Megan is in danger. He immediately goes to NYC and is at her office when she receives a package that clearly marks her for danger. Off to DC they go and to a safe house. Since Megan has the ability to "see between the lines" and "hear what is being said between those lines" she agrees to help with the investigation. I enjoyed this one just as much as the last one and the third triplet shows up and I suspect he will get his own book next, at least I hope so. Have we seen the last of The Embracer? Do we actually have The Embracer or there only one? So many questions...
**Received this ARC for review from the publisher via NetGalley**
Graham has written another great story about the Krewe of Hunters. This book is the second in the Law Triplet trilogy. It's main character, Megan Law, is the sister of Colleen - the protagonist in the first book. Megan almost died in the first book but is now back working as an editor. Unlike Colleen and Patrick, her brother and sister, Megan had no desire to work in anything related to police work. She loved books and loved her job. She met Ragnar, when Colleen, Mark, his dog Red and Ragnar saved her from dying. Mark and Ragnar are members of the Krewe. Now her boss, her publisher, wanted her to write a book about what had happened and Megan is not sure she can or wants to write a book about her terrifying ordeal. Then Ragnar turns up at her office just when Megan receives a horrifying "present" in the mail and convinces her that she is still under threat and needs to stay with him so that he can keep her safe. But, Megan is also able to help with the case by using her ability to tell truth from lies and to sense what a person really means under the words said. They all thought that they had put "The Embracer" and his assistant behind bars. Could there be more than two killers?
Megan Law is a book editor who just wants to put the memory of her kidnapping behind her, but it seems things aren't over yet. When she receives a gruesome package in the mail, she goes with Ragnar Johanson, an FBI agent with the Krewe of Hunters to a safe house. They work together on the case and strive to keep her safe. They also deal with their attraction to each other as they spend time together.
This is one of my favorite series, one where I automatically get each book as it's released, and this book's a prime example of why. The book's well-written with well-rounded characters and a thrilling, well-thought-out plot. It was a captivating read that drew me in and kept me hooked throughout. There's a lot of action, suspense, and intrigue with a mystery that'll keep you guessing. The romance is sweet yet passionate. I'm really looking forward to the next book and highly recommend this one. I suggest reading the series in order, but if you're not caught up on the entire series, you should at least "Sound of Darkness" before delving into this book as they're connected.
This is book 37 in the series, but book two of the triplets that we met in the previous book. Ragnar and Megan met in book one and bumped heads, but now they are back together as Ragnar and Krewe are trying to keep Megan safe from the killers found in book one and their associates. The case is fascinating as there is a network of killers and not just one. The ghost who takes part in this story is Alfie, who we met in the previous book. His story of being shot and killed in a bust with John Smith and search for a rescued girl is intriguing and is playing a significant role for the triplets, Krewe and this story arc. The action was fast paced, the addition of Hugo, another amazing pup, and the romance made for a great story. The ending was a great mic drop moment and has me ready to dive into the next book and see what is in story for a Patrick, the last triplet, and with Alfie’s quest for the rescued girl!
I loved this second installment of the Embracer killings series. As all of the Krewe books, this was fast paced and action packed. The characters are so well developed and I loved Megan paired with Ragnar. Jackson and Angela as well as Mark and Caroline (the second of the triplets) make another appearance. I listened to the audio book and finished in less than 24 hours as this was so good I had to know what happened.
I can't wait for the third book which will be inclusive of the third triplet, Patrick Law, who was pulled into this book. Love him! What great sibling characters. I hoped Jordan, the new agent fresh from the academy, is pulled back in as well. If you love the Krewe of Hunter Series, then you know that the storylines are always new and excited. This one is no exception, especially as it is spread out over the series.
You can read book description elsewhere, these are my notes on the book. Always good to read author’s books, interesting but easy to read. Megan Law is a book editor and a triplet with sister Colleen (FBI), brother Patrick (shrink) and can think/hear/read minds/see dead people (the average joe-lol). Megan gets taken by ‘the Embracer’ group who buries women alive, thinking she was Colleen but sis plus Ragnar Johansen and other FBIs finds her. Ragnar feels harm is coming at Megan (plus a hairy head) so they go to a safe house. Megan, being w/Ragnar help save several women who is being buried alive and Megan &Ragnar falls in love. ( I figured out the ‘mole’ before the scene at the shooting range😉)
I love mystery suspense novels and the Krewe of Hunter series so this book was perfect for me. I really liked getting to know these set of characters and hearing from time to time previous characters from the series pop up. There was just so much twists and turns and just so much to keep me hooked till the very end. Overall great mystery. Also if you are new to this series they can be seen as stand alone were if you missed the previous books its easy to catch up of what's going on being that each book has its own different set of characters and mystery its just nice to see previous characters pop up sometimes but you won't miss a thing if you just pick this book up its a really good one!
