Hybrid Shifters #4

Runaway Mate

Rate this book
Jillian is ecstatic when she finds out she’s become more than a wolf shifter. The instinct she’s always had that she was meant for something different is validated when a gator-bite turns her into a hybrid shifter with two distinct animal forms.

Her parents are the opposite of thrilled, and plot to have her gator exorcised before it can fully emerge. She’s been promised to the Alpha’s son, and he won’t accept a hybrid.

She does the only thing she can. She runs. But someone’s following her, and his intent isn’t clear. Her awakening desire to find a true mate skews her senses and makes every shifter she comes across look like an appealing option.

Will she find the mates and the home she’s truly meant for, or will she be fooled by the trickster who only wants to destroy her?

Runaway Mate is a standalone new adult fated mates reverse harem romance with college-aged characters, serious steam and an HEA.

This is probably my least favorite book in the series thus far. The glimpses we got of the heroine Jillian in previous books didn’t exactly portray her in the best light but I hoped in her own book I could learn to love her. Unfortunately I was not a fan of hers and definitely think she has some more growing up to do. She behaves rashly without thinking anything through and runs from literally all her problems. Not only that, I find her to be a shitty friend. Her men on the other hand were pretty likable. It was nice to see shifter cop Danny (also in a previous book) find his mate even if he’s stubborn and dealing with recent witch trauma. Her other mates, Mason and Phoenix were interesting and well developed characters.

Runaway Mate is the fourth book in the Hybrid Shifters series by Romy Lockhart and it was a great read. Each book in the series centers on a different group but all the stories are connected set in the same town with familiar characters.

Jillian was first introduced in Hybrid Rejected she is the best friend of Amanda who was the fmc in that story. Well in Runaway Mate we get Jillian's story which starts at the exact same time as Amanda's. Readers get to go back and see past events through Jill's eyes while she is currently discovering her mates.

While reading Amanda's story I will admit I thought Jillian wasn't the best. She seemed kinda flighty, not too deep and a little shallow in the feelings department and I'm glad to find out I was wrong. Jillian is more in touch with her instincts, she's emotionally smart, observant, and caring. She puts on this mask to blend in with her pack, to be who they want her to be but she feels like she has never fit with them, only Amanda who she cares for with all her heart. I am surprised to say that I like Jillian even if her dual nature (of wolf and gator) makes her a little flighty.

Following instincts and allowing a gator shifter to bite her things don't go well at home and she flees an arranged mating to a sickening but powerful family. First day on her own who should she find but Phoenix "Nix" and Mason both are wolf-gator hybrids and really great guys. Nix is an omega so he's more in touch with emotions, he's also a really great artist and seems to have it together the most out of this group. Mason brings all the feels because he's the nice but silent type, mostly because he's insecure about his looks. Mostly it's his weight that he doesn't like and finds it hard to believe that a woman could like him which isn't something you really see in pop culture, it's the girl with the weight issues.

There are also a few more familiar faces, Danny the gator alpha from the previous books has a predominant role in this book. Not to mention a few other characters from the previous books. I will say that I feel sorry for Danny, he isn't like most gators, he isn't predatory (or evil) and he has a hard time coming to terms with his feelings but he's a good guy who goes through a few traumatic events but things work out.

As for the story it was really good. First gator shifters (as a whole) seem like pure evil, just why be an a-hole? Then there's Jake, yes Amanda's Jake, Jill's twin, he's back and I still don't have good feelings. Jillian was sort of a mess because of her gator's personality, it made her flighty and I found it a little annoying but she has gone through some trauma, including leaving a jerk of a father and escaping a life she never wanted, so she gets a past. Most of the story was about Jill figuring her relationships but at the end, the story just got crazy, pure entertainment with a HEA.

It was fun seeing familiar faces and getting Jillian's whole story, filling in things so that they made better sense. Runaway Mate had family drama (like seriously), alpha men who get put in their place, magic, fantastic mates who care with their whole being, and a fmc who took charge of her life. The best part Romy isn't done with hybrids yet, I look forward to the series future stories.

Runway mate is a hybrid shifter RH romance. Jillian’s a wolf shifter but the match her father wants for her feels wrong. When a sexy gator shifter bits her she’s force to look at what she really wants.

This was an interesting concept and the first book I’ve read in the series. It can be read as a standalone and available on KU.

When I first read a synopsis from Romy Lockhart I was afraid her books weren't gonna be for me, however, the history of her main character spoke to me and I decided to give the book a chance. I didn't regret it for a second and every time I get offered an arc for one of her books there is no way I can say no. And after reading Amanda's story, I was quite curious to read what has happened to Jillian in the mean time.

Although Jillian's story is mentioned briefly in Amanda's story, and vice versa, it's totally possible to read one story without reading the other. However, this one might have the more satisfying ending. I of course don't want to give away too much, but it feels like justice is served for both Amanda's and Jillian's pain in this one and although at times it was quite sickening to read everything, I eventually think everyone involved simply had it coming.

But before the story reaches the epic finale, Lockhart takes her time to introduce us to the characters and to have those characters form a connection. Although this universe knows fated mates, things are not easy. Firstly because not everyone dares to believe the mate bond when they feel it, but also because a life long commitment is quite scary. I like that even though this love is fated, it still takes hard work, dedication and conversation.

Just like I like how the author doesn't rely only on the romance. All characters have their own story, their own history and their own journey. Of course, the moment their lives intertwine and those journeys cross they of course have some influence on each other, but even though they eventually become a tight knit unit, the author never forgets that those characters are individuals first. And since we get to know them so well, it's impossible not to fall a little bit in love with them.

Wow, this book was full of action and smexy times. Jillian is a wolf shifter who doesn't feel quite complete until a bit from a gator shifter brings out her other half. This is interesting concept for me. I'm not a gator fan at all, I live in Florida and they are a real threat, but this had such an interesting blurb I gave it a shot. I really enjoyed the book but there was a little too much sexual violence for my taste. If you aren't turned off by that, you will love this book.

Runaway Mate is the fourth installment within the Hybrid Shifters series. In this, you will watch Jillian fall in love and become a hybrid shifter. First, though, she needs to get out of town and away from the bullshit. Mostly because her dad wants her to choose the Alpha's son for a mate. Which, yeah, she doesn't want at all because he's a douche canoe and doesn't deserve her.

Jillian always knew that she was made to be more than a wolf. So, when she gets bit by a slimy gator, she can start to smell her freedom. The one thing she doesn't think of is becoming someone's prey. On the run, she ends up meeting some delicious looking men. Of course, that's when her heat randomly starts to strike. Constantly horny wasn't fun for her because the guys somehow won't give into her needs or demands. Oh man, I just wanted them to claim her.

Eventually the claiming came and went. It definitely made me a happy girl because it was about damn time. Before that, though, we had the drama to deal with. Family drama that is. Honestly, I wasn't surprised that her brother ended up betraying her. I didn't like him in the previous book and hope he never finds happiness. I was, however, surprised with how quickly her mom defeated her mother.

I also wanted the revenge against certain other people to go a little slower. Just because I wanted more bloodshed. In some weird way, I guess I'm okay with what went down because I'm happy she found her little harem pack. Also, that her mother finally seems happy.

After meeting Jillian in Romy Lockhart's Hybrid Rejected, I really wanted to know more about her and her story, and Runaway Mate didn't disappoint. Alligator shifters really aren't a shifter that is covered very often so it was definitely interesting to finally get something with them in. The two stories mentioned do line up a little and we get to see the other side of what was going on with Jillian, whilst Amanda's story was also going on. But I wouldn't say it's imperative to read one before reading the other.

It was an enjoyable book and I really loved Jillian's mates. Phoenix or Nix was probably my favourite out of them, followed closely by the others. A great read with a lot of twists, magic, and steam.

We’ve met Jillian in a previous book and this is her turn! Although this is a standalone read you will really be missing out if you don’t read the other books. Set in an amazing world of shifters, hybrid shifters, fated mates, drama, magic and steam and chemistry that is simply off the charts. It’s an exciting read and a fab addition to this world.

I was so excited when I saw this book was out and I enjoyed the reading ride that Jillian's story gave me. This world of hybrid shifters is tricky, comes with drama and prejudice, but also has fab fated mates, sizzling chemistry, action and magic. So much to enjoy in this author's well crafted work and I can't wait for more ;D

Ooh I loved Jullians story. Soo many twits and turns and lots of emotions with this book. Julian has always know she didnt belong with a wolf so when her dad forces her toward the alphas son she runs. She never expects where her life will lead and the men she ends up meeting. Such a great book.

Runaway Mate is a stand-alone paranormal romance reverse harem novel by Romy Lockhart. If you’ve read Hybrid Rejected, then Jillian will be a familiar name/character to you. But it’s not necessary that you have read Hybrid rejected to read this book.
I was happy that the author decided to give me Jillian’s story. I was curious as to what exactly happened with her after she was bitten. With this book, I get to find out. She knows that there isn’t anyone for her in Fallen Pines, but that’s not going to stop her dad from basically selling her to the Alpha’s son. So, what’s a girl to do? Runaway. What Jillian doesn’t expect after choosing to become a hybrid is to find her fated mates.
Runaway Mate is an overall enjoyable story. Jillian struggles with the dueling sides of her new hybrid status. She’s conflicted by the push and pull of her attraction to these new men she’s met, but the gator that bit her isn’t done with her. The only ones who know and fully understand this? The men she’s fated to be with. While there is hesitation at first, the wait is worth it when everything comes together, especially with the steamy element.
The storyline is good, but I feel that some of it get really repetitive. There are a lot of pages, a lot of chapters. I don’t mind these things as long as the story stays fresh. The author throws in some twists, but when a specific one keeps getting repeated, it gets old. I feel that if things had been pared down in places, that this story would have remained interesting for me. As it was, I was able to start skimming pages and still keep up with what’s going on. Sometimes, less is more.
I’m choosing to rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. I really wanted to enjoy this book beginning to end, but as things got drawn out it became less enjoyable. Everything happens over a couple of weeks, but with the way the book is done, you’d think it was months. If you have read previous books by this author I’m sure you’ll enjoy this one as well.

This was my first time reading Romy Lockhart and all I can say is SOLD!!! Her unique take on the shifter world is beyond phenomenal! I love this RH paranormal world that she has created of hybrid shifters, fated mates, rejected mates, magic users and of course all the little nuisances it entitles when your throw amazing plots, well created characters and off the charts chemistry and drama into the mix.

If you’re already familiar with Romy’s work, Hybrid Rejected in particular, then Runaway Mate takes you on a journey back into a world you’re already familiar with and focuses on Amanda’s friend, Jillian’s story and those of us her soon to be fated mates. Jillian is a wolf shifter that never felt complete as a wolf alone and often dreamed of being more—a gator shifter in particular. When a planned for “accident” allows that to happen for her she knows that she must run from the town she lives in as her domineering father plans to match her with the disgustingly sexist son of the alpha. Her escape leads her right into the arms of two of her hybrid gator mates and their chemistry ignites! The plot thickens as Jillian also meets an alpha Gator and adds one more fated mate to the mix.

Of course a HEA isn’t that easy for our crew as rejected mates, cruel and controlling shifters, and contracted witches wreck havoc on our crew as they hunt them down to seek vengeance and bring Jillian back home. You’ll have to read on for yourself to see how they’ll be able to overcome all obstacles in their paths and become a pack of their own. Overall this was an excellent read as Romys storytelling leads the readers down a well plotted out journey of true mates, betrayal, and the love that conquers all.

We are taken back to Fallen Pines in the latest book from Romy Lockhart. We met Jillian briefly in Hybrid rejected, which centered more so on her best friend but not it is her turn.

Jillian isn't attracted to any wolves in Fallen Pines, her father wants her to mate with the Alpha's son but Jillian knows there are bigger things out there for her. She purposely gets bitten by a gator shifter and she runs away to complete the change-after all hybrids are frowned upon in her town. She gets out as soon as she can and finds herself in the middle of nowhere, meeting two other hybrids that are giving her all sorts of butterflies. Will she finally find her own happiness and feel like she actually fits in?

Romy Lockhart is a brilliant storyteller. She weaves a story together seamlessly and it unfolds in front of you with such ease. The descriptions and details provided make it easy to imagine the whole story as it unfolds. It is very easy to get lost in this story and not want to put it down.

The main characters all have enduring qualities in them that hook you from the get-go. I would love to learn more about Nix and Mason in another book for sure- I mean there are a few hints dropped but a full story would be lovely. You really do find yourself rooting for Jillian -even if it's only to get hers at some point, I mean put a girl out of her misery already!

I don't want to say anymore as I don't want to give away the fun! This RH shifter romance is a fantastic book to add to your TBR list. There are plenty of twists and turns to keep you engaged and you will finish this book satisfied. It is in a shared universe with other books but you can read them as a standalone.

This is the first book in the Hybrid Shifters series that I've read.
I'm going to have to check out the other three because I really enjoyed it.
Each book can be read as a stand-alone since they focus on one group of individuals but are set within the same town.

I don't think I've ever read a story with a gator shifter.
Much less one as a hybrid.
It was interesting to see that dynamic.

In this book, we have a lot of things covered.
Heck it is 127 chapters.
Definitely aren't missing anything.
I can't go into too much detail because I don't want to give anything away, but you are in for one bumpy ride.
Luckily, we get a happy ending.

Jillian has three mates.
Each different and totally swoon worthy in their own rights.
I loved seeing the dynamic between all of them as well as together.
Plus watching them overcome everything that is thrown at them has your heart wanting to reach out to them.

Check out Romy's work.
You won't be disappointed.

We met Jullian briefly in her friends (Amanda) book - Hybrid Rejected. Now in her own book she definitely goes through a lot. A despicable father, a backward thinking pack, a sadistic alpha, hybrids, 3 hot guys - Phoenix, Mason and Danny and plenty of steamy scenarios. The plot twists as well as all of the above keeps you on your toes. There isnt one book in this series that i havent liked yet and Runaway Mate is no different. Even with all that happens to Jullian in this book shes still sweet and full of sass. I loved the guys especially Mason who i really just wanted to hug. He had so many unfounded insecurities. It endeared him to me so much. This was a great read and i enjoyed reading it

Romy Lockhart is a new for me author, but I will definitely be reading more of her books after finishing Runaway Mate. I’ll be honest, it did take me a little bit to warm up to Jillian because she came across as bratty/spoiled at the beginning of the book. However, by the end, she really grew on me and I realized that she had to act a certain way to meet the expectations of her family. I thought this book was really unique and I really liked that there were hybrid shifters capable of shifting into both an alligator and a wolf. I thought it was interesting that their two shifter sides were sometimes fighting against each other, and they had to learn how to balance themselves. If you like paranormal romance, I think you would definitely enjoy this book!

What a steamy, unique take on a shifter RH, wow! I was admittedly a little over shifter romances because they all seem the same dont they? Well this one doesnt! Alligator Shifters!? Id never even heard of it. I like that usually reptile shifters are painted as a Villian (thanks Monsters Inc) but she didnt do that with these guys. There are some Triggers in the book, if you need to watch for those. I love the dynamic and story building with the Mates. And I love that this is a stand alone, but if you love it like I did there are 3 more books within the universe you can check out. I will say the FMC is young, and acts young, so if you're the type of person to rate a book badly based on the fact that a young girl isnt starting out her life with an abundance of character growth/depth, then this isnt the book for you. If you enjoy unique stories, with plenty of steam, and the potential for more, then come on in and enjoy.

I enjoyed this story, I've not read about alligator shifters before so that made it interesting.
Although this book is definitely a standalone, it does share a world with other books.
I must admit I found Jillian hard to like, maybe because she seemed like a teenager - although this could be due to her upbringing. She did jump to a lot of her own conclusions, without thinking things through. This is definitely a story of instalove once mates have been found.
I enjoyed the world building, how the shifters interacted and the u fluency the Witch have on the shifters.
Nix was definitely my favourite, he was the most level headed and had the confidence and common sense to help Jillian as she adapted to her new life.

For those who already read Hybrid Rejected (Amanda's story), Jillian is already a known character, and I am glad I got the chance to read her story too. It reflected her personality (and my impressions of her already from Amanda's book) very well - impulsive, even reckless, stubbornly following her goals, changing her fate with her own actions. Although her choices were sometimes very risky, in the end it paid off - after all, what her father had planned for his daughter is something I wouldn't wish upon anyone. The typical writing style with very short chapters and switching POVs keeps the reader engaged from the beginning until the end and the story passes by fast too. It may feel a bit anti-climatic how the alpha gator threat was solved, however if you read Hybrid Rejected before it makes not much sense to go into more details in this book. Overall a nice read.

I loved Jillian's story. It is definitely touches a little on the dark side however she has her men that are there for her even when she is unaware.

Jillian thinks that her life is great and that she has found her fated mate even though she is an outcast in her town. Sadly a turn of events causes Jillian to have to take her plan b. This leads her to a school that we have seen in a previous book and even get some character cameos. However there is a lot going on behind the scenes and Jillian and her men slowly peal back the layers and find out some secrets that were burried deep. I absolutely loved this book and there was growth with Jullian and her own courage and how she sees herself and I feel like she did a lot on her own but the little nudges from her men really helped. I cannot wait to see what will happen next in these standalones!

🐊🐺 Living life on her own terms no matter the risk.....exciting read!!

So happy we finally get to see Jillian's entire story in this book! My oh my is it worth the read. It's also far different than what I thought it would be based on the glimpses we saw through Amanda's eyes in previous books in the series. Jillian is living under the thumb of her overbearing father and has to escape. Fleeing for her own sanity, she does so with only the clothes on her back and hope in her heart. Looks like the fates are leading her somewhere indeed. Take the adventure with her as she finds the strength within and comes to be the person she was always intended. There's tons of intrigue, betrayal, alpha males, steamy moments, awesome females, and maybe a comeuppance or two along the way 😉. All in all an EXCELLENT read!!!!!

An exciting reverse harem romance read

Jillian, a wolf shifter, has always known she was destined for something other than her pack and heads out for one last day at the beach with her best friend after graduation. As the story progresses she thinks her expectations are met, her destiny is being forcefully adjusted, and when she thinks she has met other parts of her soul a rejection hits and she does what she does best – runaway right into another mess. Romy Lockhart’s Runaway Mate is an exciting reverse harem romance read full of self-doubt, finding one’s true self, and overcoming the odds stacked against them.

I read this book with my Kindle Unlimited subscription and I received a free copy of the book from the author. I had the opportunity to review or not.

Solid stand-alone with a HEA. Jillian is a returning character from a previous hybrids book getting her own story. As a FMC she’s a little flighty especially at first but she’s young and inexperienced so it’s believable as a character. She faces a horrible arranged marriage which is what leads her to run away. Her hybrid nature gives some unique touches to the story as does the matching hybrid nature of two of her mates. They are an interesting and engaging bunch. I liked the inclusion of a beta that has body issues for a change and the emotionally in tune omega as well. Overall a fun and steamy read with good plot and characters. Highly recommended.

I was beyond excited to read Jillians story after what happened with her in Amanda’s, and while you don’t have to read Amanda’s story to understand Jillians, I highly recommend it.
Jillians constant feeling like she was missing something makes her seek out a dangerous situation that changes her life (eventually) for the better. There are a few bumps in the road, some quite bigger than others, but everything that happens to her both makes and breaks her heart. And in the end justice is served to everyone who deserves it. This was an amazing follow up to a character I really wanted to know more about.

Grab a fan or some ice because this book is HOT!

Jillian knows she’s meant for more than being mated to the future alpha. She just didn’t realize the path she took would make her a hybrid. When she meets wolf/gator hybrids Mace and Nix, she feels like she’s going up in flames. Too bad those two keep screwing things up.

Jillian is young, and it shows in a lot of her actions and words, but it doesn’t make her any less determined. She knows what she wants and goes after it. I loved her character! There were times I wanted to smack Mace, and later Danny, upside their heads for being clueless idiots. Nix was adorable and sweet.

The characters worked well together and balanced each other. The story line had drama, suspense, and of course romance. Runaway Mate was a delicious read I couldn’t put down.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Good standalone
This was a new author read for me and I'd read another - it was a good standalone to pick up whilst between series etc. it was an interesting concept with Jillian’s own fortelling of her happiness and then seeking to become a hybrid to achieve that. it was also good having the challenge between her two creatures and how that affected her and the decisions she made. The characters were all individualistic (the one in touch with their emotions, the stoic grumpy one, and the unsure leader), although it felt we got a greater insight Nix rather than Mason or Danny. There was plenty of action and drama that drove the storyline.

Ever grow up knowing that you’re meant for something more than what you’ve always been told?!
Jillian does and she is determined to make sure her life turns out exactly like she knows that it’s meant to be. After fleeing a horrible chosen mate situation she finds herself being saved by three strangers that make her tummy flutters go crazy. However, trouble always finds a way through your happiness when there’s Magic involved. Jillian finds herself in another cage set by her father and is determined once and for all to free herself of his hatred of hybrids. Fighting for your freedom never felt so good.

While this novel is a standalone, there are other books connected to this same universe and characters. This is my introduction to the author, and while I did not have the context of the other novels, I felt it was very enjoyable. I always like books that approach things in a different and unique way, and I felt that the author did that very well with the idea of shifters. Overall I felt that the book had very good elements - the characters, the workings of the universe itself - but that it could have only benefited from moving a little faster in some sections that felt a bit repetitive. Overall a great read and definitely recommended!

I loved reading Jillian's story.

We first met her in Hybrid Rejected as Amanda's best friend. She came off as a popular, spoiled, rich brat but little did we know then there was more to her story.

Jillian always felt off and like she really didn't belong. She felt she was meant for greater things and had a plan to escape her miserable life to find what fate had in store for her. After graduation she sets things in motion without realizing the roller coast she was about to take a ride on.

I loved the dynamic with her guys and loved reading every minute of their adventure.

I can't wait to see what is next.
