Rowan Campbell’s not even remotely interested in being a bride. Yet her father insists that this untamed, fiery daughter of his must have a husband, so Rowan devises a plan. A competition. As a competent archer she’s more than willing to put her skills against the ablest of bow hunters in the realm.
Lachlan McDonald’s known—and loved—Rowan since she was a wee lass, when he first arrived at her father’s keep to be a guard. He’s watched her grow into a beautiful woman who refuses to be tamed. Now he has a chance to compete to win this woman’s heart and hand.
When will these authors get it thru their thick skulls that a hero who supposedly LOVES the heroine won’t stick their dicks into other females??
This story was going so-so. I wasn’t digging the heroine all that much. She was another modern narcissistic Karen crudely inserted into a historical romance for no rhyme or reason—her unreasonable demands and petulance and selfishness confused for “strength.” Because being “strong” in this authors mind is being a self-absorbed, narcissistic bitch who cares only for herself.
The hero was kinda pale and beta and in the background. He loves the heroine, we’re told. He’s loved her for years and he grew up in the castle so he’s known her for years. So im expecting the hero to be celibate, hopefully even a virgin since he’s known the heroine forever. There’s no reason for him to know the heroine, love the heroine and then slime around with another female.
And what really infuriated me and had me DNFing and returning was the hero WASNT faithful to the heroine. He “looooooves” the heroine sooooo much…but not enough to keep his dick out of other women. His love was just aa pathetic and weak and beta as he was—I don’t want to read about a hero whose love is so worthless he can still take other women into his arms, kiss them, caress them and then rut them. How about that hero can go throw himself right off a cliff? I want a hero who is so obsessed and devoted to the heroine he doesn’t even look at other women, much less want to fuck them.
I didn’t get any further into the book when I ran across that slimy hot mess so can’t give any more safety details or if it had a HEA. It wasn’t safe for me with a loser scumbag hero who was a a slave to his genitals, didn’t have the self-control or integrity to keep his penis out of other women.
Meh. This was like so many of these stories—wild child of the family refuses to be a “normal” daughter, prefers to do traditionally male pursuits (archery here), declares she’ll only marry if she can pick the guy, then picks the one she always butts heads with. Add in a neighboring villain—who appears, then disappears as it suits the story (mainly to prove to her groom that he isn’t necessarily the protector), and then it’s all happily ever after.
Harmless enough, though trite, but nothing much is really explored in detail. The dude trying to ruin the honeymoon and abscond with the bride was such a random thing. The conflict only took up a few paragraphs, and to make it seem related to the story, they just threw in a comment about how oh, he’d been a wedding guest we didn’t bother to mention until after the fact. Zero set-up for the only real conflict in the tale. 🙄
as many have said before, this gives brave x outlander vibes. i won’t lie, i too downloaded this because the archery interested fmc piqued my interest (i immediately went “omg brave!!”.) anywho, save for a few grammatical errors, this story was fun to read. i will admit though, there are many questions and plot holes i have left unanswered (Ie: who exactly snitched on the location of lachlan and rowan? and save for i didn’t quite understand the immediate banter to lover quarrel because it genuinely seemed as if she despised him and they never really interacted unless they had to? so where was the building of their interactions to actually growing fond of each other? it felt like it just sort of went “oh fuck my life, i have to marry my fathers guard and i think he doesn’t like me even though we never interact” to “i love you rowan and i’ve always loved you even though i’ve been pulling your leg out from under you for years”…hmmm.
okay okay FINE, i won’t be an absolute misery dweller and crap all over the storyline. genuinely, i did enjoy this short and fast paced read, i just wish there had been… a bit more to the development of the mc’s relationship but i guess you can only fit so much in a 115 page book, although i wouldn’t have minded if it was longer if it meant it would’ve expanded on rowan and lachlan’s romantic build up. so, if you’re looking for a quick and easy read that’ll make you want to rewatch brave, outlander or god forbid, maybe even braveheart, then give this a try because it’s not a bad story by any means
This was actually a 3.5 star rating for me - definitely needs more proofreading! I love tomboy daughters and Rowan is one of a kind. Her dad is pressuring her to marry, and she agrees to marry the winner of the annual archery test. Her head guard, Lachlan, is the winner and she agrees to marry him, but still is uncertain because he's by-the-book and she doesn't want to change her ways. They talk and everything gets worked out. She saves Lachlan's life when he is attacked; the leader wants Rowan and her dowry. A very happily ever after.
I like a strong female lead, although Rowan came across as a bit of a self-centred bitchy type as first. Tbh, I never truly warmed to her, although I was beginning to like parts of the character. There is not a lot to the story, but it works. There were a couple of minor editing errors in an otherwise well written story. This book is so clean that I was unsure their were any marital relations until the epilogue where they have a child.
This was clean story but it felt short without some much needed conflict. I think there should’ve been a second encounter to seal the deal. Or maybe the villain wasn’t villainous enough or the struggle was too quickly ended. Whatever I felt it lacked something…although ending at 89% is just plain wrong.
There were some very good parts of this book, but it was short and so it left me wanting more in several places. The romance was sweet, but it was difficult to understand how the heroine went from feelings of indifference, at best, and disdain, at worst, toward the hero to abject love and devotion within the span of a week. Still, I enjoyed the story and it kept me engaged.
Great characters and plot! Love from afar, then that love coming between two who didn't think it was possible! Then such a deep love and devotion and a loving family!
Scottish highlanders. Their best. Matches were usually made for the children, but this gal was high spirited, lovely, the best markswoman of the keep. A story of chosen love, protecting at any cost and shared family values. A great story
Looks to be a great series if this book is anything to go by, started and finished within two days, a good storyline which will keep you interested from start to finish, love that Lachlan got his lass in the end, fabulous reading
A light romp with strong emotions. I enjoyed the story. The characters were complex enough to allow for growth. I would recommend this book to the followers of the genre. This is the first book in a series that can be read as a stand-alone story with a HEA ending.
I enjoyed this clean, nicely done book, but felt like I was reading a YA book for Jr. High girls. There was no “historical”content to speak of. I will be reading book 2, but hope it’s a bit more exciting.
3.5 🏹🏹🏹 would have been a four but it suddenly went from badass heroine to doting mother without so much as a steamy kiss. I was expecting much more spice from the cover but all in all a solid read.
Omg snooooze. For anyone interested, the plot was barely finished and for those interested, closed door. Thank god it’s short. I finished it in 2 hours but woof. Can’t get THOSE back.
Another stuff your kindle day read. Overall I thought the story was a bit underdeveloped, but there was potential. Not sure I will continue to read this author as I like my romance novels with a lot more steam!
. Plot/trope: Rowans father wishes for het to get married, and she uses the upcoming clan-contest to find her an equal. Qute short read. Litt vanskelig å forstå dialogen iom. at den er skrevet på skotsk dialekt…
