The Hitman's Guide #4

The Former Assassin's Guide to Snagging a Reluctant Boyfriend

Rate this book
Cassel
When I gave up life as a hitman, I thought everything was going to be better. I was going to become a PI, help people, and live normally… and then I met Jeremy, the most perfect man to have ever saved my life (I mean, he might be the only one who has saved my life, but he’s still the best at it). From that point on, it was all over for me—I knew we were meant to be. The issue is that he doesn’t… quite seem to realize that. But when he’s targeted by criminals (literally, someone just shot at his head), he needs to rely on someone, so why not me? He might not know about my past as a hitman or that I don’t need to be protected, but I’m prepared to do everything I can to save the day.

Jeremy
When my past comes back with a vengeance, I’ve never felt so alone and out of my element. That is, until Cassel offers me information that I desperately need, forcing me to drag him straight into danger. The issue is that he’s too sweet and innocent for this world and I’m not sure that I’m strong enough to protect him, but I can’t bring myself to push him away. As truths come to light, I realize that maybe Cassel isn’t quite who I thought he was, and maybe we’re not so different after all.

While you can read The Former Assassin’s Guide on its own, you’ll get maximum enjoyment by reading The Hitman’s Guide series first. This book contains speedy car chases and not-so-speedy ATV rides, a wager Cassel is determined to win even if it kills him, and way-too-tight sparkly spandex suits.

An ex-assassin spinoff series from Alice's Hitman series?

I loved the dynamic between Cassel and Leland in the last books, with both being raised and trained separately by Lucas, but still feeling like they were leaning into a long-lost big brother / little brother relationship.

While Leland's craziness was always full-on pedal-to-the-metal, Cassel was also pretty intense, just not quite as insane, while still being quirky and fun.

[My take on a slightly-less ginger, 22 y.o. Cassel...]

Cassel was still just as adorable as before, but I really liked finally getting a peek behind the curtain for Jeremy. In the previous stories, Jeremy was a completely closed-off book, so I'd worried that he'd be boring, which turned out to be far from the truth, as he had serious reasons why he had always kept others at bay.

[My take on Jeremy...]

Right as this story began, an unknown group of bad guys were trying to put a bullet in Jeremy's head, so with Cassel having designs on making Jeremy his one true love, he jumped in with both feet to ensure that Jeremy stayed safe.

This was essentially one long, crazy chase scene, until they had enough information (and ammo) to finally make a stand and take the fight to the bad guys.

Leland and Jackson were never far from the action in regards to on-page time; however, this book steadily maintained the feel that this was Cassel's story, and not just "Leland's next story", which was good. I loved Leland being around, but not completely taking over.

As this story ended, all of the current plot lines were fully wrapped up with a nice, neat bow, but since it was the start of a new series, with the introduction of yet another of Lucas' proteges, I suspect that the next book might be Chaos' story. At least, I'm hoping so. : )

I'd rate this one at around 4.25 stars and definitely would recommend it to anyone who enjoyed the first three Leland books.

✅🆗 Smut
❗️❗️You need to read The Hitman's series (books 1-3) before reading this book.

Thank you for this dose of silliness, Ms. Winters.

I recommend reading this book between The Hitman’s Guide #3 and #4 because it chronologically happens between them. It also helps us understand how Jeremy and Cassel got together (because they are together in The Hitman’s Guide #4). From the start, I fell in love with Leland and Cassel's crazy dynamic in the Hitman series, so I was super excited when I discovered that the author wrote a spinoff novel about Cassel.

When someone tries to kill Jeremy and doesn't seem to want to let it go, Cassel decides that it's his new life purpose to accompany Jeremy, help him, and keep him safe, since he is his one true love (Jeremy just doesn't know it yet). There is a lot of action in this book, car chases, gun fights, kidnappings, and spying on criminal groups, and you will not get bored, that's for sure.

I wish he’d let me help him, but instead, he does this weird little pat on my head like I’m a dog before looking confused by his actions and rushing off. My heart. My betraying heart. Why do you have to be so drawn to a man who thinks you’re a dog?

Cassel is not as crazy-intense as Leland, but he is still pretty intense, funny, cute, and quirky once he gets over his inability to flirt with Jeremy. There is banter and humorous moments, but also a more serious note whenever Jeremy or Cassel were talking about their past. There are also a few flashbacks of Cassel's teenage years when he was working for Lucas, and I like that the flashbacks were short and didn't take too much room in the book, but were pertinent and shed light on Cassel's past.

Jeremy was a nice surprise. I knew him as the grumpy cop who couldn’t stand Leland in the first books of the Hitman series, and who reluctantly helped him in the 4th book, only because Cassel asked. I wasn’t sure if I would like him that much, but we saw a softer and funnier side of him in this book that I really enjoyed. I don’t like him nearly as much as Cassel and Leland, or even Jackson and Henry, but he was surprisingly likable in this book, and I am happy that Cassel and he were able to get their HEA. I was also shocked by the number of shady secrets he had! He seemed so… well… boring in the Hitman series, but he has a dark and unexpected past that is slowly revealed in this book as it progresses.

Cassel and Jeremy were cute together. I liked Cassel's bluster and cute shyness whenever he was with Jeremy, and it was funny to watch Jeremy try to protect Cassel and treat him like he was a fragile puppy, when he is a badass ex-hitman. I couldn't wait for Cassel to finally show Jeremy what he was capable of!

Me: Leland, how did you get Jackson to fall in love with you?
Leland: I flirted with him.
Jackson: He shot at me.
Leland: Yeah, that’s called flirting.
Jackson: That’s called attempted murder.
(…)
Henry: Why the hell am I part of this group text?

Even though this book focused on Cassel and Jeremy, I was SO so so happy to have glimpses of Leland, Jackson, and even Henry! I can never get enough of them and their crazy conversation, their text message exchanges are always particularly ridiculous. I love Cassel, but Leland somehow always steals the show…

This book ends nicely, with everything being resolved and no loose ends, but we also got introduced to another of Lucas' old protégé, so maybe the next book in this spinoff series will be about Chaos? I admit that I do not care much for him for now, but he was definitely intriguing enough to make me want to read more about him and his story.

Reread/Relisten #4: October 2024

Yes, what I needed after the last failed read! I am trying to drag out this series, hoping that when i finish book 6 that book 7's audio will be released ahah.

Reread/Relisten #3: January 2024

This book needs to be read after book 3 of the “Hitman’s Guide” series.

Love this group of characters!

Now on to book 4!

Reread/Relisten #2: August 2023

And to finish out the "Hitman's Guide" universe I had to read Cassel and Jerebear's book! haha

I hope there is a book two for these two in the future, maybe with Fred lol

Reread/Relisten #1: December 2022

Same as before, i wanted to read about all these characters again without having to read the whole Hitmans Guide series. And this was just hit the spot! I love all of these characters and I hope there are more books with them in the future, even if they are novella length!

4-4.5 stars-November 2021

I wrote a review for this and the review disappeared in the goodreads black hole.

I loved to come back to these characters: Leland, Jackson, Henry, and Cassel and Jeremy.

The banter in this book was signature Alice Winters, and I loved that, I laughed out loud many times.

This can’t really be read as a standalone because the main characters from the “Hitmans Guide” series are prominent features in this book.

This does have a HFN/HEA, but it felt like she could expand this series.

ALSO THE AUDIOBOOK JUST CAME OUT AND MICHAEL FERRAIUOLO NARRATED!!!!!!! Holla!

Read/listen to this book you won’t regret it!

Every time I feel like I miss this Leland and is gang but don't want to re-read all the books I re-read this one and it helps with the nostalgic!

I just love Alice Winters

Reread August 2024: I remain in love with Cassel and this book!
__________
I really liked Cassel in the first 3 books in The Hitman's Guide and I was excited to see he got his own book, hoping it would be good.

Now that I've finished it, I can safely say I'm fully in love with Cassel and this is possibly my fave book in the series!

Jeremy and Cassel are grumpy/sunshine perfection, the book was fantastic and hilarious, and I adored watching them get together and take down a whole crime syndicate with the help of Leland, Jackson, and Henry.

Leland's cameos were so good, he never fails to make me laugh with his insanity, but Cassel wormed his way into my heart and is my new fave baby boy ❤️

Make sure you read this after the first 3 Hitman's Guide books, so you, too, can fall in love with Cassel and, perhaps more surprisingly, actually really like Jeremy! 😂

Oh and you NEED to do all these books on audio, the narrator is incredible!!

Finally Cassel and Jeremy’s book. And it did not disappoint.

It’s a nonstop adventure filled with humour. It’s fabulous and I loved that Cassel gets to shine. It’s also sweet which is perfect since Cassel and yes Jerebear are both adorable.

Now I’m a huge Leland fan, I just can’t get enough of him. And as always he’s brilliant.
Am I biased?
Maybe. But I do love Leland. And having him play second fiddle to Cassel was perfect.

The funniest moments for me were the conversations with the long suffering Henry and Leland (of course). Plus Henry and Jackson’s time in the spotlight. And let’s not forget the lightsaber 🤣

This book has a bit of everything and it’s definitely a book I’ll re-read again and again.

The audio is just as good as the rest
Fans of the Hitman series that have been waiting for Cassel's book won't be disappointed as he finally takes the spotlight and gets his man.
Jeremy always interested me because he was grumpy and acted like he didn't want anything to do with the PI's, but he was always there helping if asked. It was great to see the other side of him and he's a sweetheart.
Plenty of laughs because there's a decent amount of Leland, plus Cassel is pretty funny on his own. I was laughing straight away.
Lighter on the steam because this series is more about the capers they get into.
So much fun!

I read this after the the Hitman series but it should be read after book 2, I think? Or was it book 3? Anyway, it wasn't too confusing even if you read in the order I did as only a few minor info was missing when I overlooked this. This book answered where Micah came from and why Jeremy now answer Leland's call any time he wants something no matter if it's serious or just plain shenanigans. I did wonder about Jeremy's seemingly maniacal interest in the ATVs but when I read this, I finally understood why. 😂

This may not be as hilarious as the Hitman Guide series but it is equally great. I love Cassel when he became Leland's unofficial brother but with the number of people in Leland's life, they don't have a lot of time with each other to show their bond. Here though, Cassel only has Leland and in extension Jackson and Henry that their relationship and fondness for each other was very evident. 😍 Also, there was just SO many hilarious scenes with these two. I thought they only started being double troubles together in book 5, especially that boat scene, BUT apparently I just missed this book because this was actually where all their chaotic tendencies started. Leland and Cassel together was just plain disaster. It's a true brotherly bond when you just felt like killing each other. 🤣🤣🤣

This was very cute especially with how opposite the gap was between Cassel the hitman and Cassel the cute, charming acrobat with a puppy-like personality. He's so awkward and so head over heels with Jeremy he fumbled through all his flirting attempts. However, he also repeatedly protected and saved Jeremy in secret and ain't that the funny part? LOL Pretending it was Jeremy who made the hits when he's not as good a shot as Cassel.

I loved the slow burn and the failed flirtings and dates. Also loved how tender their scenes were. It fit well with Cassel's personality as a sensitive, vulnerable, and affectionate person. He's so insecure sometimes and he doesn't realize how adorable and well-deserving of love he is.

Jeremy, on the other hand, was hard to like at first even because he WAS a bit of an ass on the first books. He at least redeemed himself a bit but still not fully deserving of our precious Cassel yet (I'm with Leland on this, LOL). He did have potential if you haven't read the rest of the Hitman series.

I adore Cassel. He is a great addition to the Hitman’s Guide series and I was very excited to read his story. Unfortunately, the longer I listen to this the more frustrated and annoyed I become. I really don’t like the direction this story has taken and that is totally a me thing and doesn’t reflect at all on how good the story actually is. Many people enjoyed this so I’m in the minority here. My two biggest issues are 1. I’m not really feeling the chemistry between them and 2. I HATE that Cassel is hiding who he really is and is allowing Jeremy to think that he’s the one protecting them when Cassel is doing all the work. I know that eventually the truth is going to come out but I’m not patient enough to wait. Also, I’m not liking Jeremy as much as I thought I would. His insistence on keeping Cassel safe comes across more annoying than endearing. I’ll just read the last book in the Hitman’s Guide series and hopefully they’ll already be together. I don’t mind them as a couple, I just don’t like their story.

4 Stars for the Narrator. I liked him so much better in this one. I think the less Leland the better. It may just be his voice choice for Leland or in audio Leland seems more annoying 🤷🏽‍♀️ Either way I enjoyed this one. I want more Cassel and Jeremy. Mainly more Cassel because he actually is a bada$$😆

Absolutely Perfect!
12/26. Just finished listening to this gem! Of course Michael Farriaoulo was just perfection!

Oh I just adored this book! It was everything I was hoping for and more. Cassel finally gets his turn to shine and get his man and I was so happy for him. We met Cassel in the Hitman series, and while this could stand alone, I highly recommend reading that series first to truly fall in love with all these characters. Everyone is back and in epic Alice Winter's style. We have the mystery, the action, the hilarity, and the romance. Everything was done so well. Cassel, who always seemed to take a back seat to Leland previously, finally gets his turn to show us, and Jeremy, what he can do and it was glorious.  Great story, intense action, humor that made me snort out loud, and a sweet HEA for Cassel and Jeremy! I couldn't have asked for anything more. This truly was Cassel and Jeremy's story with the perfect amount of  Leland, Jackson, and Henry along for the ride!  I cannot wait to experience it again in a few months when Michael Ferraiuolo brings it to life in the audio. I hope there is more planned in the future for this found family!

I’ve discovered that I can only read the Hitman books by this author. Literally everything else I’ve read by her has been a masterful fail for me. But I wanted to read this because it’s an anticipated Hitman spinoff.

There really wasn’t a connection between the MC’s. So when they finally got together I was like… why? This really isn’t a romance. It’s humor/suspense with a couple awkward sex scenes. Don’t read this if you like sex/steam in your M/M books.

There is nothing I hate more than lying by omission. It’s a cheap way to add drama to a plot. I wish authors would stop writing it. And the addition of the dog being along for all the chaos was out of place and unnecessary.

The funny sassy snarky banter I cackled at in Hitman was wearing thin in this book. I was excited to see Leland again but even he wasn’t the same Leland I came to love in his trilogy. I feel like because fans wanted a Jeremy/Cassel book so much, Winters squeezed it out… and probably shouldn’t have. It was pretty disappointing. It’s like Hitman’s Guide was freshly squeezed orange juice and this was just the pulp leftover no one wants but exists anyway.

ETA: Did a re-listen to this and I adore sweet, sweet Cassel so much!

Ahhhhhh I'm so happy that we have a new story, and for Cassel and Jeremy - with still plenty of amazing cameos from Leland, Jackson, and Henry.

I ADORE this series! It's my favorite one from Alice and the audiobooks are AMAZING. Michael puts 110% of his narration skills in bringing these characters to life, and I adore his narration for Leland especially. His singing and sass and completely over the top dramatics just make this series amazing to experience in audio format.

So - I was so excited to see how we were get Cassel and Jerebear together haha, because Jeremy is just so so detached and annoyed in the entire series lol. I absolutely loved this. I love them finding the truths about each other through the story, and how we just got to learn so much more about the two of them.

I love Henry just tagging along and constantly being annoyed with everything going on, but still doing anything to help his friends.

All in all - if you are a fan of the Hitman series, I think you will LOVE this one, too!

Can't wait for more within the Hitman 'verse in 2022!

I absolutely love this series. I LOVE Leland and Jackson, and when Cassel was introduced he was quickly a favourite as well. The Hitman’s Guide series is one of my all time favourites.

This book was Cassel’s book, through and through. I would say 2% of it was romance though, with nearly no romance and nearly no steam. That was disappointing, and is my reason for four stars only. Also, Jeremy was kind of a placeholder character and ultimately forgettable. He was sweet and everything, and brought the plot to the story, but very forgettable. With Leland and Jackson, Alice Winters managed to make sure Jackson doesn’t get overshadowed by Leland’s extremely loud personality. I think in this book, Cassel outshines Jeremy day and night.

That being said, Cassel is fucking delightful. He is hilarious, smart, and powerful. I loved the beginning when he was forcing himself along with Jeremy just because he was attracted to him. His entire nonchalance regarding Jeremy’s extremely dangerous situation was so entertaining. I really appreciated reading Cassel’s POV as he is repeatedly cleaning up messes that Jeremy is clueless about. In book where Cassel is introduced, it is made clear that his hand to hand combat skills are exemplary. We don’t really get to see that here, and I think that was a misstep. We do get to see his other skills in action, though, and I was not bored once through this book.

As per usual, Leland is fucking awesome. Every page he’s on is a gift because he is such a masterpiece of a character in my opinion, so it was honestly a relief to see not only quite a bit of him, but him from the perspective of others. His relationship with Cassel is such a treat. They play off each other so well and clearly love each other like family.

To summarize, Jeremy who? Cassel is fucking awesome. Leland is even better.

Cassel gets his man!

Well, there were a whole load of surprises in this book that I never thought about but strangely fit absolutely perfectly in the crazy scheme of things.

Loved seeing Cassel be his bad-ass self and finally getting his man and Jeremy had a whole bunch of secrets hiding in his past.

Loads of action, plenty of mayhem, guns ablaze and all the gang on hand to bring their own bits of chaos.

I loved Jeremy and Cassel’s story. I feel like we’ve been waiting for them forever. Lol. Which I’m dramatizing. You know after Leland. Lol. We get to see all of the guys in action again in this book.

I got so many laughs on their adventure trying to find out and stop who is trying to kill Jeremy while both are keeping secrets.

Loved having Henry, Leland, and Jackson jump right into helping. I couldn’t wait for their HEA and they sure did get one. I hope to see everyone in the future some more.

Cassel & Jeremy finally get their HEA, but there are a few bumps along the way. The story starts off with a bang, with someone trying to kill Jeremy. Of course Cassel isn't going to let anything happen to his Jerebear, and steps in to keep him safe & take out anyone that is out to get Jeremy. Now Jeremy doesn't know about Cassel & Leland being ex-assassins, so he is trying to protect Cassel from getting hurt & thinks he is doing a great job. In one scene, there is kind of a shootout & Jeremy thinks he is the one that shoot them all, but it was really Cassel who stepped in. When we find out what is really going on & who is out to kill him & why, I was shocked. I didn't see that coming. I liked that Jeremy didn't run when Cassel came clean on who he & Leland was. He was shocked, as any normal person would be, but he took it pretty much in stride. So Cassel, Jeremy, Leland, Jackson & Henry head off to track down the bad guys & let the craziness ensue. When our boys are not dodging bullets, they are involved in all kinds of silly antics. From Leland and his guns (I love that he has named them all, though I don't think he really remembers who is who & just calls "x" gun by a random name), a stint involving silks & spandex which was way too funny, OMG & Fred the possible serial killer, car chases & Leland being Leland. Things done in our MC's past come to light & I sort of had one kind of figured out. And we also have someone from Cassel's past resurfaces. This is a slow romance, but no less hot. I think you would get more enjoyment out of this book if you read The Hitman's Guide first as that is an introduction to everyone.

I received a copy of this book from the author and this is my honest opinion

Cassel is absolutely adorable and not nearly as annoying as the amazingly insane Leland, but there's just enough Leland and Jackson (and Henry, of course!) here to satisfy my snarky soul. (Yes, I unreasonably love Leland, damn his snark!) Btw, that's Jeremy on the cover, so now I completely understand Cassel falling in love with him -- hot hot hottie hot that man is! And this shows that he's not just a good cop with a stick up his ass, no, he's pretty bad ass in his own way, which makes him perfect for our sweet assassin boy. (Tbh, I had already read Leland & Jackson book 4, so I already knew that these guys end up together, but honestly, I never though that our dear author would ever write a book like this and not have our MCs find an HEA, so it wasn't much of a surprise.) I hope these guys get more books in their future, not that their pasts have be revealed.

Ah Cassel, you precious little pocket-sized peanut!

Of all the books Alice Winters has written, I think The Former Assassin's Guide to Snagging a Reluctant Boyfriend is probably the sweetest one, which is kind of weird to say when there's murder and mayhem galore, but when Cassel is the star of the show how could it be anything but sweet?

After meeting Cassel in the Hitman's series I really couldn't wait to get to know him better. His pining over Jeremy was the cutest, and I was excited to see how things would work out between them. It was great getting to see another side to Jeremy, I knew there had to be more to him than just a grumpy bear!
These two gave me all the warm fuzzies. Jerebear was so caring with Cassel, and Cassel just ate it up, never having had someone who really cared about him growing up.
And I really got a kick out of how clueless Jeremy was, when it came to Cassel and how he was more than capable of taking care of himself.

Their story was entertaining and wacky and zany, with some twists and turns I was not expecting. I loved how everyone came together to help Jeremy, when his past came back to haunt him, no questions asked. That's what's so great about this found family, they jump in with no hesitation, consequences be damned!

Perfection! The snark and humor is endless in this fast paced, engaging story. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. This group of misfits have certainly grown into a wonderful chosen family.
Each of them brings something special to the group dynamics.
Cassel fits in perfectly. He is funny, scary smart and focused on bettering himself. Enter Jeremy, his crush, who is oblivious to how Cassel feels about him.
These two are thrown together when Jeremy's past catches up with him. Of course chaos ensues!
What a ride it is. I will never look at squirrels or light sabers the same again.
It was so much fun to see the whole gang work together for a good cause.
I loved watching Jeremy finally realize exactly how strong Cassel is. They fit together perfectly.

I’m not sure I can write a review that‘s glowing enough to do this book justice. I mean it’s Cassel’s story and he is a freaking amazing bada$$. I really believe he could outshine Leland. *gasp* I said it and I stand by it. I’ve been buzzing for him and Jeremy to get together. “How can just lying here feel so good? How can simply having him with me make me feel amazing?” They may say it’s none of my beeswax, but I think they’re utterly adorable and wanted to squish them together from the very first. Although I admit to being a teeny bit scared of coming between Cassel and his Jeremy—beware and take heed. I loved the action; the crazy, squirrelly, head-shaking antics that left me gasping for breath from laughing too hard or from awe; and of course, the incredible, wonderful, can’t-get-enough family. So bring out the sparkles and silks as these men deserve a standing ovation and an encore.

Our favorite gang is back, with the focus on Cassel and Jeremy. Filled with action and lots of laughter this story does not disappoint. Cassel has wanted Jeremy for a long time now so is was fun reading his thoughts and action while trying to hide parts of himself. This could be read as a stand alone, but honestly I feet=l that to get the picture the whole series should be read, plus the others are just as fun and thrilling.

Once again the crew from Wellstone Private Investigators find themselves involved in a case that involves plenty of mayhem.

Cassel has been crushing on policeman Jeremy (Jerebear) for months without making any progress. It may be his rather unfortunate wooing skills and/or the fact that Jeremy is pretty oblivious to it all. Circumstances finally have them working together and so begins all sorts of mayhem as they bring down the bad guys.

Naturally Leland, Jackson and Henry are along for the ride ensuring lots of hilarity involving silks and spandex, Leland’s armoury, Fred the possible serial killer and car chases.

I laughed out loud on too many occasions to count whilst reading this very enjoyable and engaging book. The romance is low heat and focuses more on the development of the relationship between Cassel and Jeremy who both have parts of their lives that remain hidden for a reason. They are wonderfully developed characters and I cheered them on from beginning to end where Cassel finally got his longed for HEA with Jeremy.

This is book one in the Former Assassins Guide Book series and I can’t wait for more.

I missed these characters. Over the top and crazy Leland, go along with it Jackson and deadpan Henry. Cassel and Jeremy took a while, but they were cute together. I liked how Jeremy was feeling bad and trying to protect Cas, whilst Cas was taking out all the bad guys in secret. Once the secret was out, the whole family was all in and it was ridiculous. Those group chats were great fun. The ending was bad ass. Curious about Micah. Loved it.

I was so excited to finally get to read Cassels HEA. I mean we all love Leland, and if you don't something must be wrong with you. I am also happy to say there was plenty of him in Cassels book as our favorite hitmen, oops I mean PIs, get themselves into the usual trouble. Even blow up Randy makes more than one appearance which is always a great laugh.

The real surprise for me in this book was Jeremy. Behind the gruff exterior we've been privy to in previous books the man is actually quite sweet and caring. He has a sense of humor that I didn't expect. He also has secrets. So so many secrets. Honestly I never thought he had it in him.

I adored him and Cassel together. Honestly it was super cute and again way different than what I was expecting. Both men have not so normal pasts, which is something they bond over once they each speak their truths. I enjoyed every moment of their fast paced road to an HEA. Cassel has definitely won me over and I hope to see more of him and Jeremy in future books.
