The Fantastic Fluke #3

Fluke and the Faultline Fiasco

Rate this book
When an earthquake shakes up Sage's night, his instinct is to forget about it. They live in California—quakes happen. But this one sends the consciousness that lives in the ley lines running to him in fear, so he and his gunslinger boyfriend set out to investigate. What they uncover is a century-old plot to destroy not only the ley lines, but the city of Junction itself.

Now, they're in a race against an unknown adversary who wants to annihilate everything they love, and the only man with the answers is Sage's long-dead Uncle Jonathon. Good thing they only have to read his journals, not deal with the insufferable jerk in person.

Between a heist to steal a magic artifact, Uncle Jonathon's bigoted ramblings, and one surprise after another from his allies, can Sage find what he needs to save Junction?

Fluke and the Faultline Fiasco is third in its series, so if you haven't read a Fluke book before, you should definitely start with book one, The Fantastic Fluke. The Faultline Fiasco is a 65k word novel that follows the continuing adventures of Sage, Fluke, Gideon, and their whole family, as they try to save the world. Or at least Southern California.

I love this series so much!

The third entry in this fabulous urban fantasy/paranormal romance sees Sage, Gideon, Fluke and the rest of the gang having to find out what's happening with the convergence and dealing with a threat that could see Junction literally blown off the map.

Sam navigates through the complexities of the narrative with ease, one moment focusing on Sage's growing confidence in his own arcane magic skills, at others giving quiet moments of family life with Iris.

There's the same humour that has been present throughout, the steam level is understandably low as this focuses more on the paranormal/mystery and suspense elements of the storytelling than the romance.

Having said that, Sage and Gideon are as solid as ever, they have a few steamy moments which confirms that they're still utterly committed to their relationship and each other and there is one particular scene which sees a very vulnerable Gideon that had me having all the feels!

Speaking of vulnerabilities, Freddy in this book almost broke my heart! He's such a study in contrasts and here he really does prove himself in all ways up as a top bloke who is yearning to not only be useful but also to belong. I'm intrigued by where his story arc may go next!

I said in my review of book one The Fantastic Fluke that the series gives me a Scooby Doo mystery vibe and that remains strong in this particular instalment.

The bad guys were a surprise, not who I had been expecting at all, the suspense element works well, it's an intriguing twist on what the other two books have used but still in the same we must destroy X Magic because ballpark.

More secrets about Great Uncle Jonathan are revealed and oh boy was he an absolute arse and, speaking of family, we get to find out a bit more about Gideon's past and his connection with the local Dominus Anson.

Cannot wait for more!

Highly entertaining, excellent narration, but sadly with a slightly unsatisfying mystery plot.

So this is book 3, and this time a few months have passed between the ending of book 2 and this one: Gideon and Sage have been together for almost a year now, and Iris, Sage’s grandmother, throws a party to introduce him to the high and mighty around there. Ofc, apart from Gideon in a tux, there’s not much that holds Sage’s interest, it just reinforces our impression that yes, his uncle really IS the ass we always thought him to be.

Things get tense when -after an earthquake- the being living in the layline reaches out to Sage because it’s been hurt, and Sage realises that someone out there is bent upon destroying not only the laylines, but the entire town, too.

This book is a bit shorter than the previous two, but still entertaining and well written. I loved the character development, especially the things that get revealed about Anson and Freddy.

The mystery about who the bad guy is though was a bit… well. Surprising, but in an underwhelming way, it more or less came out of nowhere and didn’t really add to the ongoing storyline, so that’s the main reason I’ll rate this installment with 4 instead of 5 stars.

Zachary Johnson on the other hand, the narrator, deserves at least 6 stars out of 5, he’s narration is so nuanced and gripping without overdoing it ❤️

4.25/5 — I guess I should be a bit more objective here. I love this series, don’t get me wrong, but I will refrain from giving this book the highest rating there is for once.

This book was in my opinion not as strong as the first two. I guess I’m kind of surprised by that. The plot could’ve easily been fantastic and would’ve stood out from the others because it would’ve been just generally different but alas. It didn’t quite work the way I expected it would.

To be fair though the plot did pick up in the last part of the book and ended up being quite cool in my opinion. And Marron finally got to be the star of the show. What a badass! Loved that.

And I’m still very much loving the characters and familiars in this book so it’s definitely a win for me.

As always Fluke was adorable, Gideon was dashing, and Sage has really grown in his confidence as he realizes just how truly amazing he is. The convergence and magic was interesting and keeps getting more so as our whole gang figures out what the heck is going on and how they can save literally everyone. This was more paranormal/magic/mystery focused, but we still get little pieces of Gideon’s and Sages relationship and just how utterly devoted they are to one another. Not my favorite in the series, but still gets me excited for where this will go. Side note: Freddy completely stole the show and deserves his own story and just oodles of love.

Another really solid addition to this series! Once again, I loved the relationship development between Sage and Gideon but especially between these boys and their found and biological families!

The climax of the plot was good, particularly some of the finer details! Those details really did the job of hooking me for the next in the series which I’m excited to start immediately.

Love and hugs y’all! Happy reading 😘

Entertaining and enjoyable. I still love the characters so much. But somehow this is no longer a romance. Not much going on in the whole romance department which was lacking to begin with. I’ll still keep going but I think this is more queer lit than romance.

Ends on another soft cliffhanger, with more questions than need to be answered. I feel like there was a lot that got glossed over in this one, and we had more time jumps and things that were left unexplained. There's more than a few situations being solved without much explanation and I'm not thrilled at each story ending on another cliffhanger, soft or not. However, I'm really enjoying the storylines so I'll continue and hope we get some answers soon.

3.5 Stars!

The events of this book occur about 6 months after the events of the previous book and in this, someone is not trying to target Sage personally, but rather the entire city of Junction so though it was higher stakes than ever.

Sage, through all of this, was still as quirky and funny as ever and Gideon was his solid rock (as usual) with the ever loyal Fluke right besides them. There was not much relationship development on their end although with them being as adorable as they are together, I guess I can't complain. Three books in and I still wanted more of them loving on each other.

Moving on, dear old uncle Roger was still as childish as ever and Sage's Great Uncle Jonathan was as Sage put it "Off his godd*mn rocker". Lol. When the McKingley men are terrible, they really do put their all in it.Don't they?

To the story proper, I loved the writing as usual and although the baddie is someone you will NOT think of. Eventhough I liked how random the baddie was, I struggled with the "how" of his plans since the "why" was pretty clear once explained. Especially since not much light was thrown as to the how the person obtained such dangerous materials in the first place to carry out the evil plan. It didn't take away from my enjoyment but I believe it would've rounded out that portion of the story pretty well had that been covered.

On the matter of Freddy (who I wanted to hug for what he went through in this book), I'm not gonna lie...for a while there I was shipping him with Anson but seems like the author had other ideas( sad sigh) as there were some hints given about who Freddy might possibly end up with.

Speaking of which, I'm sorry but I don't know how to feel about that.Maybe it will grow on me since I don't know much about since they were not mentioned at all in Fluke and the Faithless Father and just mentioned in passing in The Fantastic Fluke. I hope the character is fleshed out better in the upcoming books to make me excited about it but for now I'm like. Huh? They and Freddy? Okay.

Finally, that ending had me messed up because JUST as Anson and Gideon were about to confront what they had both been dancing around for months, THAT had to happen. Sighhh.....

I guess we have to wait(impatiently) for the next book then!

The Golden Age of Fluke

Is there anything cuter than a fox? Wellll, if that fox is magical, is friends with a magical horse and paired with two sexy, adorable mages, then yes, all that combined is cuter than a single fox. But it’s the fox that started it all. I am utterly and completely enchanted, obsessed and infatuated with this fluketastic series. Each book never fails to amaze and each book leaves me wishing for more.

What did I love most about this one? First, Gideon is very handy to have around and now I’m so curious. Second, I need more Freddy in my life. Third, foxes love tacos. Fourth, the whodunnit and suspense-building in this one is top-notch. Fifth, have I mentioned how much I love this series? “He kissed me like he wanted to grab me and run, and never let me go. Like he wanted to pull me into him until there wasn’t a me and a him anymore, just an us, everlastingly twined inside of each other.” Everlasting swoons, I love everything there is to love about Sage and Gideon times a thousand. This series is pure fun, pure magic and pure perfection.

Another installment of the Adventures of Sage and Gang. The story furthers the magic storyline nicely, but where it shines most is with the characters. Sage is slowly building up some confidence, but shhh, don’t tell him! And don’t worry, he maintains that propensity towards self-deprecation that we all love so much.

Returning to this series was like getting to spend a weekend with friends you haven’t seen in awhile. It ends in a way that will make you *need* to pick up the next installment!

I gave book 1 five stars and book 2, while nowhere near as good, was still readable.
This...not so much. I'm convinced this is a different author or that the author maybe refused any feedback from an editor??
About 75% of the book seems to be descriptions of food and people ordering food, discussing what kind of takeout to get, who is eating what, who is sitting where when they eat the food. My God, it was boring.
The main character was interesting but has slowly become more of a boring momma's boy socially awkward dweeb loser as time goes on. He struggles to function as an adult and seems to barely understand vegetables or how to boil water. Ig he talks about pizza one more time...
His monologue is like a 16-year-olds, but he is supposed to be 30ish. Yikes.
The villain turns up for a paragraph at the beginning then is mentioned maybe once again before turning up at the big ending.
And then there is Gideon. Why is gorgeous, hunky, intuitive, worldly, curious Gideon in love with grumpy, awkward, immature, Sam who seems to have almost no sexual experience, thinks he's unattractive, has no real ambition to do anything, and has one friend and no social life? Right, ok.
The plot also hasn't moved on since book 1. We know almost nothing more about the baddies than we did then and Sam's powers haven't been harnessed because he's too petulant and annoying to train.
Yup, that's me tapped out. Good first book, but went downhill faaaaaaast.

I loved the first 2 books in the series but this one in comparison to them was more... plain?

It started with a bang but then it fizzles out till the 75% mark. I loved that Marron had a more active role here than being just a name mentioned every now and then but when it comes to Gideon and Sage's relationship nothing much happened and although they seem to become more solid we don't actively see it apart from one, two things like and Sage's acceptance.

I have to admit that I don't much care about Iris, not as much as I do about Freddy, and I find her a bit smothering and her role being something of a deux ex machina.

Some things were explored about the artifacts but nothing much with the Believers and I gotta admit that Sage's obstinance about avoiding to check out and make connections with the info he has on hand but passes mostly everything to Gideon annoys me.

Still an enjoyable read but it didn't kept me coming back thus taking me a week to finish it.

I won an ARC and this is my honest review.

This was very weak compared to the first two. There was one Not So Big Revelation about one character that was resolved with zero conflict. I don't understand why that was put in. It was altogether so disappointing, I'm not sure I'll continue.

Another good entry to the series. As usual the writing was stellar, though the story did meander quite a bit to get to where it did. Still, the writing made it entertaining.

The mystery was good, and the villain at the end was unexpected to say the least, but it did at times felt a little drawn out for suspense sake. The saving grace though, was and is still the writing.

And though some time had passed for me between the last book and this, it was refreshing enough that jumping back in, the characters of Junction felt as familiar as if I just visited them yesterday or last week. It was nice as well that we got to know more of Sage's new Grandmother and cousin.

Overall, a good middle book to the series, but I am hoping that the next and the final book after will be stronger than this.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.25 stars

Fluke and the Faultline Fiasco is the third installment in Sam Burns’ Fantastic Fluke series and I am really loving these books. Burns has done since a nice job taking the original story and really expanding the world building and the conflict to give us an exciting and engaging series arc. While each story has an individual adventure for Sage, Gideon, and the gang, the overarching plot connects and the books are best read in order, starting with The Fantastic Fluke.

This story gives us a mystery as we know right away that someone is messing around with the ley lines, but we aren’t clear what they are trying to accomplish or who is behind it all. It gives a great opportunity for all the characters to join forces to dig more into the history surrounding the town, particularly Jonathan’s journals.

This review is for the complete series.
I listened to all audiobooks of this series. The first book was a solid 4 stars for me – The story itself had some plotholes or maybe missing information and some stuff just happened to fast and to me it was kind of unclear why. But despite that it was very entertaining, the whole concept is interesting, and the characters are all well done. I enjoyed Fluke a lot. I loved Joel Leslie as a narrator and found he was the perfect fit. So I bought the next audiobooks, too.
I hadn’t paid attention – the rest of the books are narrated by Zachary Johnson. Now…I admit, I was kind of thrown when I started the second book. I expected Joel’s lively voice and got the more serious tone of Zachary. So it took me a while to get back into the flow of the story. But I willingly admit – I got used to it.
The story progressed really well, I kind of no longer noticed if some abilities weren’t explained clearly or made sense – the cast of characters is so entertaining, I just went with the flow. Suspicious mind that I am, I expected some of the additional side characters to be not as good as they seemed to be but it actually is a very clear cut cast, they are what you see. The whole storyline goes through all books and is satisfyingly solved. There is potential for spin-offs – I hope there will be some. Fluke plays more prominent roles in the books – still I feel he is a bit underrepresented.
But all in all this was a solid, very entertaining series, that I recommend and which will make me check out the other series of this author.

The Fantastic Fluke is one of my absolute favorite series. Fluke and the Faultline Fiasco is just as great as the other books in the series. Sage and Gideon's relationship is as a strong as ever. The supporting cast continues to provide wonderful addition to the story. The relationship between Fluke and Gideon's horse familiar Maran is adorable as is the relationship between Sage's grandmother Iris and the Dominus Anson. Sage's cousin Freddy plays a larger role in this book and he is fantastic. I cannot wait to see where his story goes in the upcoming books. The main mystery is about a threat to the faultlines and the mystery is solved by the end of the story. There is a slight cliffhanger/teaser at the end of the book. I don't know how I can wait patiently for the next installment - in February, I think. Obviously, I highly recommend this book!

Fluke and the Faultline Fiasco finds Gideon, Sage et. al. about six months out from the events of book two in the series. When a massive earthquake threatens the convergence in the middle of the night, the group are led by the convergence to find an odd railroad spike slammed into a fissure in the ground with fading magic. The mystery surrounding the spike artifacts are, of course, linked to Jonathan.

I really love this series. I'm also really glad to see not ALL of the books are directly focused on the Believers. I really love the characters in Sage's growing found-family (despite two members of it being active members of his family, shut up, its found. lol).

I'm so glad this series is still going on! I find Sage to be so relatable, and will love to see more of him and the gang. This one is all that good stuff we've seen with the first two, but with a brand new plot! Have I said I love Freddy before? Because I love Freddy and hope his luck picks up in the future

Another great instalment in this series. Loved that Marron (Gideon's familiar) & Fluke have a good bit of space in the story. And secondary characters Anson and Freddie were great, along with Grandma Iris. ...I found parts of MC Sage's thoughts a bit repetitive but that's easily overlooked.

Narrated by Zachary Johnson - excellent.

Fluke!

I have adored this whole series but Fluke seriously steals every scene he is in. I love that adorable little fox familiar. Our intrepid heroes are know dealing with someone messing with the ley lines underneath the city. And Sage and Gideon are also learning more about Gideon’s past and the Marsh family overall. I can’t wait to see where this goes next!

This book opens with Gideon in a tux and Sage in a state of drool. Who doesn’t want that?

Fluke and tacos. Fluke and table manners. Fluke and butterscotch brownies. Fluke and Marron. I love all the Fluke.

This review is also a Freddy appreciation review because he is, as always, fucking delightful. But in this book, I loved him even more, and I never thought that would be possible.

Absolutely stellar bisexual rep realization moment in this book too. I cried a little.

More! Yay more Fluke books!

You should definitely read these in order tho. The convergence requires it.

All my recommendations for Fluke and company. All of them!
