Edison Arantes do Nascimento, KBE, best known by his nickname Pelé, was a Brazilian football player. He was given the title of Athlete of the Century by the International Olympic Committee. Time magazine listed Pelé as one of the 100 Most Important People of the 20th Century. While his birth certificate shows his first name as Edison (after Thomas Edison), he preferred to call himself Edson, but it was as Pelé that he had become a sporting legend.
In his native Brazil, Pelé was hailed as a national hero. He was known for his accomplishments and contributions to the game of football in addition to being officially declared football ambassador of the world by FIFA and a national treasure by the Brazilian government. He was also acknowledged for his vocal support of policies to improve the social conditions of the poor (when he scored his 1,000th goal he dedicated it to the poor children of Brazil). During his career, he became known as "The King of Football" (O Rei do Futebol), "The King Pelé" (O Rei Pelé) or simply "The King" (O Rei). He was also a member of the American National Soccer Hall of Fame.
Spotted by football star Waldemar de Brito, Pelé began playing for Santos at 15 and his national team at 16, and won his first World Cup at 17. Despite numerous offers from European clubs, the economic conditions and Brazilian football regulations at the time benefited Santos, thus enabling them to keep Pelé for almost two decades until 1974. Pelé played as an inside forward, striker, and what later became known as the playmaker position. Pelé's technique and natural athleticism have been universally praised and during his playing years he was renowned for his excellent dribbling and passing, his pace, powerful shot, exceptional heading ability, and prolific goalscoring.
He was the all-time leading scorer of the Brazil national football team and is the only footballer to be a part of three World Cup-winning teams. In 1962 he was on the Brazilian squad at the start of the World Cup but due to an injury suffered in the second match, he wasn't able to play the remainder of the tournament. In November 2007 FIFA announced that he would be awarded the 1962 medal retroactively, making him the only player in the world to have three World Cup winning medals.
Since his retirement in 1977, Pelé had been a worldwide ambassador for football and had undertaken various acting roles and commercial ventures.
Pele - real name Edson Arantes de Nascimento - is believed by many millions around the world to be the greatest footballer the world has ever seen. Yet most of these football fans never saw him in action on the field of play - as he played during an era when live television, or rather even ordinary football, was hardly shown on television. History has recorded however that Pele graced four World Cup finals, and scored in all of them; more important he was a member of three World Cup winning Brazilian sides (and played key roles in the 1958 and 1970 versions) This book is a "warts and all" story of the first part of the life of Pele, and his achievements in football. One says "warts and all" because the great man even records things like his first sexual experiences, visiting a prostitute etc... His agony after discovering his investments after his major playing career was over had largely "disappeared", is palpable. Pele comes across as a very jovial, sensible guy in this work; he has lots of good things to say about his fellow footballers, and apparently does not harbour grudges against even those who tried to undermine, or bring him down (for example his reaction to strong suggestions that his eyesight was poor). In the beginning, we live through the poverty of his family whilst he was very young, and later on when he starts his footballing career. His exploits at the 1958 World Cup finals when he was only 17 years old; his injury problems at the next two World Cup finals, and the apogee for him at the 1970 finals. His first marriage to "a white woman" and his views surrounding this - that in his native Brazil racial discrimination is very limited. Pele explains why after retirement from football he decided - was convinced - to go and play professional football in the American league of that time. We soak in his great achievement of scoring his 1000th goal, etc. The book is quite comprehensive with an appendix on all the goals scored by Pele during his major career. On the whole, an excellent, interesting read for lovers of football interested in the "king of football" - (and note that it was long after the career of Pele was over that world icons like Maradona and Messi emerged)
The Autobiography of the Greatest Fútboler to Ever Live
Pelé: My Life and the Beautiful Game is an autobiography of Edson Arantes do Nascimento. He was born on October 23rd, 1940 in Três Corações, Minas Gerais, Brazil. His parents were “Dondinho” and Celeste Arantes. His father was a professional soccer player in Brazil. Pelé grew up in Bauru, São Paulo in a poor area. His father taught him how to play soccer, and he would use a sock stuffed ball that was surrounded by newspaper with his friends because they could not afford an actual ball. He played both field soccer and indoor soccer. When he was 15 he started his pro career at Santos, located in Brazil. After several championships and 19 seasons with Santos, Pelé moved to the U.S. to play for the New York Cosmos. His international career consisted of 3 World Cups (the biggest tournament in the world of sports) and 77 goals for his country, Brazil. Pelé is the most decorated fútbol player ever to live.
One theme of this book that really struck me was to never give up. Pelé was raised in poverty. His father was a professional soccer player, but he barely made enough money to support the family. His mother would stay home to watch Pelé and his siblings. Growing up, Edson wanted to be a fútboler just like his father. His mother always told him to get an education and become a doctor because soccer players did not make very much money. Pelé continued to practice and follow his dreams. He always had a ball at his feet trying to work on his foot skills. He would play against adults so he could become stronger. He did whatever it took to become better. All of his hard work and perseverance ended up making him arguably the best soccer player to ever live. His story is a true inspiration and it shows me to never give up on my dreams.
I thought book was good, especially for being written by Pelé himself. The autobiography was extremely detailed. It broke down all of the big moments in his life. It was fantastic how he described each one and all the thoughts running through his mind. You could feel his emotions during each moment through how well he explained them. It was also very factual. At the end of the book it showed all of the games he played in and how many goals he scored in them. Although it had a lot of detail, it kind of made the book a little long and boring at times. Also, the book contained a lot of facts and statistics that only soccer fans would appreciate. I highly recommend this book to soccer fans because it is great being able to relate to the detail of each play. I would still recommend to non-soccer fans because Pelé’s life is still a phenomenal story. What he went through and how great he was is an inspiration. I rate this book four stars.
“My Life and the Beautiful Game” is an autobiography written by the world famous football player Pele along with Robert L. Fish. It shows you the world of football life threw the eyes of the world famous player, and teaches you that it not always easy. It is a thrilling story that puts you in the shoes of a young boy named Pele who plaid football on the streets of Brazil with only dreams of being at the top. From living in poverty to being rich people didn't always respect him due to his race and skin color, and they made it had for him to take care of his family and himself. He comes to a hard decision; he can chose to lose all of his money and clear his name, or he can chose to keep is money and take is family away leaving them with dirt on there hands for ever. Find out what happens in this amazing autobiography about the greatest football player that ever lived.
I found this book to be very interesting. Each page pulled me to learn more. It let me to peer threw the window of a football players life. The author allowed me to feel his pain and his happiness throughout the book so that at times I could almost feel the bead of sweat rolling down my forehead or the smile that spread across my face as my team mates lifted me atop there shoulders as I watched my opponents walk back to there team with there heads hung low to where there disappointed coach and fans awaits them. The autobiography was inspiring. At at times I would find myself wanting trying out a new tricks in there backyard. “My Life and the Beautiful Game” is a book most defiantly worth wile reading.
I was not alive to see the Amazing athlete play the game he loves so much, but growing up in a family where both your grandpa and father played the sport I have been told all these amazing stories about the legend. Soccer wasn’t big in the United States as it was in Europe. That was going to be changed once pele decided to sign with a team in New York, the cosmos, when pele came to play with them they were a team at a university level but once he was in the game they became the best team in the world in 1975. Pele was a very fast and agile player. Pele was one of the main reasons soccer became a popular sport to play in the USA and he increased the popularity of the MLS. He scored a total of 1,283 goals in hi career including 77 playing for Brazil. Pele was born in 1940 in a small town called Tres Coracoes in the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil. Pele and his family were struggling financially when he was a little boy he had a dream and that dream was to play soccer but his parents wouldn't allow him because they could not afford soccer shoes for him to play. Pele would work cleaning shoes or he would do whatever he could to get some money. Pele and his friends wanted to play so bad that they created their own team called los pelada which means the shoeless ones. I really liked that book because it reminded me of when I wanted to play soccer, my parents didn’t want me playing any sports because it would cost them money and we are a family of six living on an income on just my father which was barely enough to pay for the rent and put food on the table for me and my siblings. I remember standing in front of my parents bedroom door begging them to let me play soccer. The signups were that day and i didn’t want to miss them because I wanted to play. My mom finally decided to sign me up but the only problem was that I didn’t have any soccer shoes and my parents could not afford to buy me any shoes. I remember going to the practice and one of my friends moms seeing me play and I was a good player, she saw that I didn’t have any shoes on and asked why. I told her why I wasn't wearing any soccer shoes and the next day she came to practice with a brand new pair of cleats for me. Reading this book really brought back memories of times when me and my family would struggle but when playing the game I felt as if nothing was to be worried about. The game taught me a lot about working with others. I relate to pele in some ways because of my family financially struggling. And the book shows the reader how powerful the game is and that is it can unify a whole country.
Pele is arguably the best soccer player of all time. His auto-biography tackles his whole life, not just his soccer experience and accomplishments. Pele was born in in Três Corações, Minas Gerais, Brazil in 1940. His parents were “Dondinho” and Celeste Arantes. Dondinho was a pro player in Brazil as well. Pele grew up in a poor part of Sao Paulo with not a lot to offer. He always played soccer whenever he could, with whatever he and his friends could find, and wherever they could play. It was clear to everyone who the best player was during those late nights and early mornings. By the age of 15, Pele signed for Santos, one of the biggest clubs in Brazilian soccer. From there the book goes through his career. He played with Santos for 19 years, scoring hundreds of goals. When Pele was 17 he got called up to his first World Cup with the Brazilian National Team. In the tournament he became the youngest goal scorer at a World Cup, a feat that still stands today. Pele played on 5 World Cup teams spanning 20 years, Brazil won three of those. After his tenure with Santos, Pele moved to the New York Cosmos, in an attempt to liven the culture of soccer in the U.S. He later retired and went back to Brazil to be with his family. He also went back to school to get a degree, mostly for the purpose of providing a good example for his children. Pele is still alive today, and serves as a great ambassador for the beautiful game.
I would definitely recommend reading this book. Especially, if you have a love for sports or soccer specifically. He is one of the best ever and not many people, no matter how old you may be, were able to watch him play. I think that on some level reading biographies on anyone whether or not you have a reason to is interesting. I find it cool to learn things about different types of people and see how they lived their life. Especially being a young prospective student, engaging and seeing those types of things, with people having different stories and ideas is something that I find fascinating. I would give it 5 stars because like I said I enjoy biographies and also I love soccer. So the combination of the two is something I greatly enjoy.

A solid football autobiography. Some good insight and detail in the right places and plenty of opinions. Nothing worse that a footballer giving tepid coverage of some of the most talked about episodes. There is 'insider' info on the World Cup of '58, '62, '66, and 1970. Most surprising was Pelé's mistrust of European officials and the "terrible and biased" refereeing (his words) of the 1966 World Cup. Certainly something I'd like to cross-check with his contemporaries. Lovely inisght too into the Cosmos years and introducing 'soccer' to the USA.
Brilliant read. Very informative, honest descriptor of his football career and life. Found this book very easy to read and moving throughout. I must read for all football fans. Excellent!
The purpose of this book is to let readers know about the life of Pele. He is one of the greatest soccer players in the world. This book can teach us about achieving our goals and to never give up on anything. If teens want hints to how to achieve goals in life, they should read this book. This book can change a lot of people’s life about so many things. Especially when it comes to your future. It teaches you how to keep your head up and go for what you think its best in your life.
This is one of the best books that I have read. This book is well written to the audience because it gives you ways to how to go far in life. It persuades you to move on forward with your life and not give up. He talks about not giving up “Face all the challenges that that are blocking the way of achieving your goals” ”Pelé”. He is letting his readers know to challenge themselves at everything that comes ahead of them. If you feel like something is blocking the way of achieving your goals, go around it and find some other way to achieve everything that you need. Pele does a great job on telling their readers that failure or giving up isn’t the right answer. He gives them reasons to why you should do whatever it takes to become who you want in life.
The best part of this book is that it’s realistic and based on a biography of a famous person. It lets the readers know that it’s not a fiction story. It is actually based on true facts of a life of a famous soccer player. He showed and explained what he went through and how things were. People are going to want to move forward in life because a famous and great soccer player went through all this. He said “There are many great players out there, one day I want to be like them”. His dreams did come true. He made it come through because of the challenges he faced in life. In my opinion Pele is one of the best and greatest soccer player in the whole entire world. He is my ideal and I believe that if he became something of himself then I think I could become something of myself.
I would recommend this book to many of my friends. Especially the friends that believe life isn’t anything and give up easily. It lets you know not to give up and keep doing what they good at in life. One day they could become someone important and famous. Just like Pelé said “You never know when the right moment is coming at you”. He means that your dream can come true at any time. You just have to wait for the right time and moment. As long as you’re taking the right path and achieving everything that you need in life.
In conclusion, this was one of the greatest books to me. This book can touch anybody’s heart by writing the right thing to them. It let everyone know that life isn’t easy to live but if you challenge yourself and find the right way to live it, you’ll have a great one. It will have an effect to all the readers that think that life is one of greatest thing in life. It keeps the readers head up and anyone that hears about this book. If this book wasn’t written I wouldn’t have a favorite book at this moment.

I have read ¨My Life and the Beautiful Game¨ by Pele. The main purpose of the author was to write about his life and his soccer career. This book is an autobiography of Pele. He talks about every single one of his struggles as a person. Pele mentions that he was a poor kid from Brazil and that he worked hard to become a famouse soccer player. I loved this book mainly because it talks a lot about soccer (of course) and Pele is my ultimate favorite soccer player. In at least every single page, Pele mentions soccer at least once and that´s what I mainly love of this book. I would recommend this book to anyone who plays soccer because it´s really detailed about some soccer techniques. Also, this would be a good book to anyone who admires Pele, becuase obviously this book is about him and his life as a professional soccer player. Overall, this book is for anyone who enjoys reading, the formatting of this book is really good and the way Pele describes many of his experiences makes you believe that you were there with him.
It was interesting, but not as much as I had hoped. He seemed a little arrogant, having a case of reverse discrimination and appears to be overly anxious to offer his own (plausible? accurate?) motivations for many events in which he claims the press painted him inaccurately.
Perhaps this isn't too unexpected, however, for someone that achieves a high level of success such as Pelé.
I would consider Pele the only "hero" "role-model" I had growing up, besides my family, and to rush through this book in the time the library allows me to keep it would be wrong.
I will read it once I find at the local book-store.
I found this book extremely interesting because I think of Pele as the greatest soccer player to ever be. He is definitely my soccer idle. If you already knew Pele before you read this book your mind will be blown by how much you learn and how lucky he was to have the soccer talent.
If you love soccer then you have to read the autobiography of the greatest player of all time. This was written before his career was over but it gives a great look into his life and how he thought about soccer. Absolutely loved his book. Great player and an even better person, to this day.
This autobiography was a great depiction of how he lived and how his lifestyle molded him into the person he now is. The writing was not phenomenal (as he is not an author) but it put a good image into your mind of what was occurring.
