Kait Silver #1

Broken Moon

Rate this book
I'm a wolf shifter... who can't shift.

Twelve years ago, I was hobbled by my alpha, cast out of my pack, and forced into an unfriendly world without any protection.

But I’m not exactly helpless.

Despite being unable to shift, I have talents the others don't have. I can see the spirits of dead people, for one. And I have a knack for fighting rogue supernaturals.

My ex-alpha will never let me back in, but there's another alpha in the city.

Something has been killing his wolves, and he wants me to destroy it before it takes another one. He'll triple my going rate--but that's not the thing that makes me agree to help him.

He says he can free my wolf.

It's not possible, but...
What if it is?

I'll help him, either way. Monster hunting is what I do, and if there's a monster killing wolves, I will stop it. Because those two warring alphas might believe the city is theirs, but this is my territory.

The city embraced me when the packs wouldn't have me, and I will protect it--with or without my wolf.

This story starts with a bang and never lets up. Kaitlyn Silver's life is a bit of a mess, almost entirely due to circumstances beyond her control. She's a werewolf, but unable to actually shift due to a monster injustice some twelve years prior. This puts her in near constant pain as her wolf struggles under the bonds placed on her and that forms the backdrop for the rest of the story.

And Cane does a great job making that present without letting it be overwhelming. Kait is doing her best to do good and use her skills and abilities to help others. Her life is pretty much her mom and helping a local detective solve the kinds of cases that leave ghosts and spirits behind. So it's a lot of the worst of what people do to each other. Only. The whole thing takes a turn as she rescues first one stray and then another and things snowball from there. I loved seeing these new relationships develop as Kait finds connection and open hearts where she never expected. Lucy, in particular, is all the awesome and I loved her from the time Kait cuts her from a sacrificial altar.

The action rises as she is pulled into a new pack dynamic and an alpha youngish to his leadership. The shifter world is one of brutality and it seems to me that pack life is kind of awful. I mean, Kaitlyn's situation seems like it isn't that abnormal and Jared is struggling to pull his wolves into a kinder structure himself (though I have to wonder why as there doesn't seem to be much in it for him). What I'm saying is that I'm not much of a fan of any of the wolves beyond Kait and her mom with Jared coming in a very distant third and on probation.

Anyway, There's a demon loose. And something hunting Jared's wolves that has him promising to help Kait if she can kill it. But really, I was in it for Kait. I just liked her. The jury is out on Jared. I mean, he knew the injustice done to her and that he can make it right. And yet he still uses it as bait to compel her to help with his problem first. This isn't the action of a good guy or of a strong leader. I'm not sure what we're supposed to think of him because there are hints that he's supposed to be more than just an alpha to Kait. There are hints that he's better than the surface. But they're just hints.

Despite the crap-verse that is all the shifters, I liked Kait and her friends enough to round my 4½ stars up to five. This is a provisional five stars, though, because I hope Jared straightens out better if we're supposed to take him seriously as someone Kait can trust (let alone respect).

A note about Chaste: Kait starts off very alone and that includes romantically. There's no hint of more developing as yet so besides some shifter-related nudity, there's no steam. I consider that pretty chaste.

It is hard for me to rate/review this one because there was stuff I really, really liked. And there was stuff that really pissed me off. I'm going to give it a tentative 3 stars.

For the most part, I really like Kait (the FMC). Her only negative quality is how willing she is to roll over for wolves who have treated her like trash. And that is definitely grating. Aside from that, she is strong, smart (not TSTL, though she does make mistakes ... which is fair, everyone does...but I get what she was thinking at the time), protective and strongly pulled to do the right thing.

I like her friends well enough - Lucy seems cute, the detective is interesting, her mom is weird and I'm going to withhold judgement.

But I hate all the wolves. And that's a big problem.

I will tentatively withhold judgement on Jared too - we don't know how old he was when she and her mother were turned out and harrassed by the pack - but I'm going to admit it is hard to swallow. He left her exiled and tortured for twelve fucking years, and never contacted her or even checked on whether she is okay. It's a gross error for someone who is supposed to be the lead male, especially when the pain of her bound wolf has been torturing him...and when he approaches her in this book he realizes he can free her. So that's twelve years of horrible torture that didn't need to happen, to a child, and it is his fucking fault. But this douche has left her to her misery until he needed to use her for something. I'm going to have a hard time forgiving him for that.

And his pack is so horrible that to say they are douchebags doesn't even cut it. They are shitstains on the fabric of humanity. They are horrible. They are bullying and abusive to her, even though she's been brought in to stop a monster that is slaughtering them. I loathe them. And I think poorly of her for helping them - it makes her seem like a doormat. They abuse her, literally, and she takes it and keeps helping.

It also makes me think even more poorly of Jared for allowing his pack to act that way. It is vile and unforgivable. The way they treated her after she killed the monster was head-exploding unbelievable. We don't know yet what the consequences were for them, but if some of those wolves aren't dead, I will not forgive Jared. He has allowed his pack to become abusive, monstrous bullies who even torture allies, and that is unacceptable.

And it is unacceptable that she wants to join his pack after their treatment of her. It is beyond unacceptable that she thinks about eventually winning them over, as if that is a thing she should have to work to do when not only did she never do anything wrong, she actually risked her life on multiple occasions to save both Jared and all of these fuckheads. She doesn't have to prove anything to them. They have to prove that they are worthy of having her there.

To be honest, I don't think Jared's pack is any better than the pack that originally expelled her. I was hoping she'd kill her old alpha and take that pack, actually, so she wouldn't have to be in that shitty pack and subordinate to Jared.

Additionally, it was pretty heavily implied that Jared is her mate - that that is why he was able to unbind her wolf (whereas usually only the alpha that does the binding can undo it). I'm again withholding judgement, but I will say I'm not particularly hyped about it. He's going to have to prove himself, but even more than that, his pack is going to have to prove themselves. At this point, I absolutely do not want her in his pack.

I'm reading onwards, though, because I like Kait and the overall setup and world. Also curious to see what's up with the Mayor and detective, and what exactly Kait is.

So I liked the premise and I liked the plot and I like the idea behind the book but it lacked something in the execution. The dialogue and order of event seemed kind of disjointed and I really didn’t like Lucille but other than that it was a solid read and I’d probably pick up the next in series.

Edit: 9/07/2021
I’ve changed my mind it’s taken me a week to get through 20% of the second book and I’ve given up. It’s made me dislike the 1st book more so I’m lowering my rating from 3 to 2 stars

The first book in a new series

Kait is an interesting character. She is a werewolf. When she was fourteen her father was executed by the pack alpha for treason, Kait who had yet to experience her first shift attacked the alpha and as a punishment he hobbled her wolf. He made it impossible for her wolf to emerge, so every day and night Is it lives with the pain of having her wolf trapped within her body, it's even worse on the nights of the full moon when the urge to shift is impossible to resist. That was twelve years ago and Kait has learned to live with the constant pain ....... Not easily but she will.not let it.break her and she fully intends to kill the alpha responsible one day. Kait works as a sort of detective helping people who have problems of the supernatural.sort, she is knowledgeable about the supernatural world (which the full humans are unaware of) and although she is unable to access her wolf she is aware of her, has some of her wolf strength and healing ability. She has a working relationship with a homicide detective (which comes in handy) and also has the ability to see ghosts. When we meet Kait she is in the woods running trying to cope with her pain and wear herself out on a full moon. She comes across a group.of.people who have been trying to summon a demon and while processing what she's ran into.realises they have been successful, not only that it's one of the.more powerful demons. Katie got a fight on her hands she knows a high demon can easily kill her.but she also.knows he will not let her just walk away...................... Kait is interesting she has a heart of gold which she tries to hide behind a very angry exterior, her mum is in her life and very important to her as are the few people.she has let inside her circle. It's an interesting first book there is more to Kait than we at first are told, she has skills as a werewolf she shouldn't have and I have a feeling as the series progresses we will learn more. There also.a hint of romance with the alpha wolf of another pack............

This book has a great premise: a werewolf ticks off her Alpha, who hobbles her wolf - which prevents her from shifting... for over a decade. The book has another great premise too: a woman sees ghosts and is able to help them. The book has another great premise: a woman fails to fully banish a demon, who goes around doing demon-type things. The book has lots of great premises (the first one is far and away the best tbh), but it basically amounts to being a bit of a "throw everything at the wall and see what sticks" type of situation. This is not helped by disjointed, stiff writing and characterization of side-characters (namely other werewolves) that makes me wonder why the protagonist has any desire to interact with them at all. Overall, the book has promise but fails in some pretty significant ways. I won't read more in the series.

So background---the h, Kait, was banished from her pack along with her mother when she was a child because of her father's uprising. After watching his death at the hands of her Alpha, Kait was then "hobbled" by having her wolf sealed- meaning she would never be able to shift, but always carry the pain of needing to.

Wolf-woman-shapeshifter-jennifer-kleinsteuber

12 years later Kait still feels the rage and torment of not being able to change, but has become her own strong self regardless. In fact she makes her living hunting supernaturals that cause trouble or helping the ones in need of her talents (such as helping ghosts move on)

Things take a turn one night when she's in the woods trying to out run her pain when she stumbles across a woman being sacrificed named Lucy, and soon after rescuing her a wolf from her past comes knocking on her door for help.

This is the s0n of the Alpha from a rival pack who turned her and her mother away when they were in need of shelter 12 years ago, and now that Jared is Alpha himself he dares to ask her for a favor?

description

However, when he states that in return for her services he will do the one thing she's always needed- free her bound wolf- how can she say no?

So, really liked the premise. Not exactly new territory with the plot, but I liked the lead and her circle of friends. However I was not at all interested in the new Alpha or his wolves drama- let alone any budding romantic feelings the author was telling me Kait had for Jared (she deserves better me thinks)

I read it. And I will keep reading this series (for now) but there's just something that I don't like but can't pinpoint.

Maybe it's because things come a little too easy. We hear that her wolf might go crazy when it's finally free. But it's not much. And then she's able to easily integrate what seems like a personality disorder/split personality (she separated her "human" psyche from her wolf's).

And everything is like that. We're told "this is really hard". And then that hard thing is easy for Kait.

3.5 hearts

Kaitlyn is a shifter who has never shifted.  She was basically chained to her human form by her former alpha and has grown up with a wolf inside her that had never been let out.  In Broken Moon, the first book of the Kait Silver series,  Kait works as an investigator of sorts, sometimes for the paranormal community, the police or just your everyday people who have a haunting.  She is good at her job and built a life she can live with, but when the new Alpha of a different pack lets her know he can release her wolf if she helps him, it is an offer too good to pass up.

Jared is the son of the alpha that didn't take Kait or her mom in when they were cast out of their own pack.  He needs help finding a creature killing off his pack members and Kait is his best bet.  But there is also something about her when they met that told him he could bring her wolf back out and he is willing to do that and let her and her mother into his pack if she can help him.  There are hinted at other reasons too as to why he can help her wolf but we will come back to that in other books probably.

Just to make things extra fun there is a demon running around looking to harm or influence Kait since she killed off his corporeal form and took his knife.  And Kait has just made a new friend in Lucy, a psychic who is also a baker and her brand new roommate/sidekick.  Nice to have an early warning system living in your apartment.

Broken Moon has some very interesting premises for a not really new genre, I mean shifter stories are not new and seem to be everywhere.  Overall, I enjoyed the read as Kait is likeable and I wanted her to get her wolf back and save people.  I also am a fan of 'mate' stories so the hinted at mate status of Kait for Jared is a big draw.  There are a few first book issues here with scene transitions could have been a little bit better but overall I enjoyed the story and the potential I saw for the series.  This one of those series I will continue to see if the next few books increase my interest in the series.

Narration:
Sierra Kline is an accomplished narrator with over 800 titles under her belt.  Amazingly I think this is the first time I've listened to a book narrated by her.  She puts forth a solid performance and I really enjoyed her vocal performance.  She had a clear voice for all the characters and did well with the material.  I was able to listen to Broken Moon at my usual 1.5x speed.

I love great shifter books and this one is awesome! Even after the bazillion books published with shifters, Ms. Cane has found a unique and brilliant twist. It also still holds all kinds of secrets that look to be unfolded in upcoming books. I’m in!!!

FL/ KAIT SILVER:- Thrown out of her birth pack Stone Moon at age 14 along with her mother, after her father tries to fight the alpha, dies and they are labeled traitor, Kait has now become a supernatural hunter. She is a wolf, but she can't shift because her previous alpha Adam, hobbled her. Only the alpha who did it can reverse such a thing, and free the wolf. Or so everyone thought.

ML/ JARED:- Alpha of another adjacent pack called Gray Shadow, Jared approaches Kait when wolves start dying. But Kait remembers being rejected by him and his father (then alpha), when her mother appealed to join them after being thrown out of Stone Moon pack. When he promises to free her wolf, she agrees.

Review:

The world building is solid.
The plot is good and very interesting.
The characters are well developed.
The romance is brewing.

But...
It all felt inorganic SOMETIMES.

Mainly because even being desperate for a pack and having an alpha, as Kait is sometimes shown to be, it doesn't seamlessly melt into the whole story of her and the plot.

Though the bond and chemistry had the potential to be off the charts, Jared doesn't smoothly gel into her life as a romantic interest. Infact, through most of the book (and the next, because I've read ahead), he felt like a passive side-character. Since we did not have his p.o.v., his actions became all the more important to see how he feels and where he stands. And although, there was a little bit of that, I think there should've been more foreplay, if you will, between her and Jared. And I don't mean sexual necessarily. I mean camaraderie, stolen glances and caring gestures. And all those needed to spell out his extra intention rather than just as an alpha taking care of pack. I felt Rick was given all that, not Jared.

In any case, the book really was enjoyable, just not outstanding like I said.

I don’t like any of the alphas or the wolf packs. I’m not a fan of anyone but Ash the dog & Lucy the psychic. I did enjoy the story & think the plot has potential. I managed to finish it but am undecided on if I should continue it. I think my dislike for most of the characters including the FMC & romantic interests seriously impacts my enjoyment of the series. 2 💪 stars

In the first book in a new series, Laken Cane show what happens when a Shifter can't Shift:

Twelve years ago Kaitlyn and her mom were cast out from their pack when Kaitlyn's father tried to gain supporters to overthrow a cruel Alpha. He failed and not only was her murdered in front of them, as extra punishment he made it so that Kaitlyn could not shift ever. Kaitlyn and her mom have made new lives outside of the pack. Kaitlyn lives with the pain everyday of not being able to shift, but she has created a business where she takes care of the Monsters. Normally it is the humans that call on her but this time it s is rival pack. Something is killing the wolves and they need Kaitlyn's help to stop it. Kaitlyn is about to say No, when this Alpha tells her he can free her wolf. Kaitlyn knows it might not be true, but she has to take a chance. Plus Monster hunting and Killing is what she does, and if it is able to kill wolves, it is only a matter of time that it sets it sights on her and her mom.

I have been looking for a new Urban Fantasy series ever since Ilona Andrews ended her Kate Daniels series, and some have been a hit others a miss. I have not read a shifter book in a long time, and I think I stepped away from them as they all started to feel the same, but I am happy to return to a shifter genre with this book.

I appreciate how well Kaitlyn has adapted to being a wolf not only cast out her pack but unable to shift into a wolf. She has adapted very well to new living circumstances over the years as well as her fighting skills as she cannot access her true power. She has developed her own weapons and career hunting things that go bump in the night. All with daily pain of her wold not people able to get out, so ya Kaitlyn would be the definition of a kick-ass female heroine that this genre is famous for, but I really enjoyed her as a character.

This book covers a lot of cases and a lot of ground throughout the book and I appreciate that Cane did this. It showed how hard that Kaitlyn works and how fucked up the paranormal world is in her town. I liked that she works with the police when they have cases they cannot explain and regular people that have problems. This book never seemed to stop jumping from one event to another, yet at the same time did not feel cluttered. I found it had me on the edge of my seat about what was going to happen next. The demon hunting was fun, hunting the mysterious (very obscure) thing that was hunting wolves was fun/neat idea, her side job of helping people with paranormal activities and teaching a douche-bag ex-bf to a women how to treat woman and a dog.

I know being a shifter book, I knew there was going to be some sort of immediate attraction between the FMC and the MMC, but I appreciate that even though the attraction is in there, especially for the wolf part of them, that Cane re-framed from having anything really occur. I like when the relationship is more drawn out and has more of a real feel to it. It will be interesting to see where Cane takes the relationship aspects especially when it comes to the pack and Kaitlyn's background.

I think the one thing I want to see in the next book it a bit more grit and darkness. This one does get there more the farther into the book that you get and I hope that Cane takes it even farther.

This is the first book that I have by Cane and I am glad that I picked it up as it was interesting and fast paced. I look Forward to continuing on in this series.

Enjoy!!!

Let's see, the story is not that bad, but I chose it for the romance. And there is not. Romance. Nothing, zero, nada. What's more, and this is going to be difficult to explain, there is more of a kind of weird love triangle than any romance. And the weird part is because one of the vertices of said triangle is a married cop. Yesss. And he is my favorite. That says it all.
(And I´m scared shi, I mean, out of my wits Ms. Cane will finish off the wife).

And then there's all this gratuitous violence. The beatings are bestial and ruthless. Blood and all its stuff, because you know, as they practically heal as they go, it doesn't matter much either. Or does? Hmm…

So no, this series is not for me. I'll keep looking.

***

SPOILER-Y REVIEW, I DON'T PUT THEM BEHIND TAG

While it started with a bang, and I was really curious with Kait's predicament, unfortunately when I reached the end of this book, I really didn't care. The thing is, the book had TOO MANY plots, and it drove me bonkers. I mean we have

+ Demon boss making havoc after his blade is stolen by Kait
+ A wolf Alpha asking Kait for help because some supernatural creature are killing his pack members
+ A bastard ex-husband who tries to keep his daughter from her mom
+ A ghost (coming out of nowhere, and I still have NO IDEA WHO HE IS!) telling Kait about the Mayor's missing kid

... and this is not even at half-point!

Because after half-point, we still had Kait's EX-ALPHA coming to stop Jared (the wolf Alpha asking for Kait's help) from freeing Kait's wolf. AND suddenly there's a serial abductor that has been kidnapping kids, and of course Kait solves that one.

It's just too much!! And why is Kait is like the answer from Heaven for all of these problems? Nobody else can do it! Kait can! And she's like a special snowflake because apparently, she is SO POWERFUL, even the demon is afraid of her blood.

I am also questioning Kait's character... because she has been alone, right? With all that rage over her ex-Alpha pack... but then she easily welcome Lucille, A STRANGER, and in mere days, like being best friend all goodie-goodie because Lucy is THE BEST COOK, ever!! Uhm. A bit inconsistent, really.

Not to mention I HATE the vibe the author is giving about the possible love triangle (Jared clearly stirs Kait's desire, but the human male detective seems to somehow works around Kait's orbit too, even if he's married, but his wife is mentally unstable, so there!)

And regarding Kait's "broken" wolf... well, that's one flying out the window since Jared help freed the wolf even before the book is finished.

AND ALL THE WOLF-PACK MEMBERS ARE JACK-ASSES!

Yeah. NO next book for me this time.

I don't read that many shifter romances tbh but whenever I do....damn do they leave me pleasantly surprised and wanting to read more.

Kait Silver is a werewolf who hasn't ever been able to shift because of being "hobbled" by her alpha when she was 14. 12 years later, she is now a paranormal investigator and works closely with Detective Moreno to hunt and kill demon spirits.

I immensely enjoyed this book and the sidekick Lucy has become one of my favourite characters quickly. She is a psychic and the way Kait is able to hunt demons piecing together clues from the various dreams Lucy has was very witty.

I did not really like the love triangle angle but am thankful that there was not much of it and the whole focus of the book was basically on developing Kait's character for the readers. It played a vital role in me being able to connect with her.

When she is finally able to shift, it is truly epic and I loved how she saved the girl towards the end.

Continuing with the series 100%.

5 Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐🎧

I rarely give a book 1 in a series a 5-star, but this book just sucked me right in. I will start with the narration because it was perfect for this story for Kait. Sierra Kline just has the right tone I loved it.

Kait has been living with such horrific pain for so long that it's almost part of her now. She is a wolf shifter who can't shift. She was hobbled by her alpha, and then her mother and herself were cast out.

She has become pretty dang resourceful. So when the alpha of the pack she kind of shadows comes to her for help and then says he can free her wolf, she will do just about anything to make it happen.

I am not a magic kind of girl, and I was afraid this book would have it, but nope, if anything, it's very little. But what does have is a kick-ass main character who has a purpose and finds friends along the way to help and who help her, and she helps them.

Oh, that ending! I am jumping into book 2!

The poor h is continually battered and everyone doubts her. The men either want her or want to kill her. Fast paced world building, not sure I liked the h or any of the men, and there are lots of then. But the biggest issue I had was the so many oh-so convenient plot devices Telling the story. Just OK.

So much pain

Kait is a wolf who never got the chance to shift. Banished from her pack, she makes her life as a paranormal investigator of sort. After a full moon night full of unexpected events, things around Kait start to change and bring a lot of questions with them.

I felt for Kait and what she’s been through for the last 12 years. She’s hurting so much and still staying so strong. There’s a lot we don’t know about her and I’m really interested in getting some answers.

I liked the whole mystery of the investigation as well as the bigger issue that seems to be continued in the next book. There are intriguing characters and trust is been build slowly. It will be nice to see how it all works out from here on out.

Nice start to the series with a good blend of mystery, action and likable characters.

Intriguing

I was really surprised by this book. It draws you in with everything going on and it is a lot. You have what seems to be an outcast lone wolf and her mama. Said wolf now hunts the other scary things that go bump in the night. The beginning of the book starts off with action right away. I like that you see both the strong and vulnerable sides of Kait and the side characters are just as endearing and intriguing. The jury is still out on her supposed savior. The dynamic between them is interesting and more of a build up. You have a seer, a dreamer, demons, wolves, a detective and much more. I wish the book ended more on a satisfactory note than the cliff hanger but it was still well worth the read.
