Bad in Plaid #1

Plaid to the Bone

Rate this book
Laird Oliphant has been blessed with six daughters, and not a single son to leave the running of the clan to. What’s a desperate and slightly mad laird to do? Why, take a page from his great-great-whatever-grandfather’s folio, and declare an ultimatum: Whichever daughter marries and has a son first, then her husband gets to be the next Laird Oliphant. There! Only a little bit sexist, and it should get the job done!

Unfortunately, none of his daughters are interested. Take the youngest, for example...

Leanna Oliphant’s goal is to lead as adventurous a life as possible, and it seems as if she’s going to get her wish, even without having to help things along (that fire was an accident, honest!). First, her father made that ridiculous proclamation, which she figures she can ignore, because the dear man is several eggs short of a dozen. Next, a handsome and mysterious man arrives at Oliphant Castle, claiming to be on a secret mission from the king (although he won’t say which king). Then Leanna, through some careful “negotiations,” convinces the delicious stranger to let her help in his mission, which leaves the two of them all alone in a dark and secret passageway.

Then, a skeleton drops on them, completely ruining the mood.

As one of His Majesty’s elite Hunters, Laird Kenneth McClure is on the trail of a missing royal messenger. The man’s secret mission had sent him toward Oliphant Castle, so that’s where Kenneth followed, looking for clues to the man’s disappearance. The brawny warrior doesn’t know who he can trust, particularly when one of the laird’s daughters offers to help in his mission. But bubbly Leanna is a ray of sunshine in his dark life, and too enticing to resist.

When the pair of them discover the dead body mid-canoodle, Kenneth is fairly certain it’s not his missing quarry. Almost. Probably not. But…he’s beginning to realize things are not as they seem on Oliphant land, what with the mad laird, hypochondriac lady, more ghosts than he can count, six sisters, one wailing bagpiper, and who let this random donkey wander through the great hall?

Does the delightful Leanna know more than she’s saying? Kenneth’s mission for the king may be the downfall of this crazy family, and he’s not certain it’s worth it.

Warning: Contains silliness. And, like, a lot of anachronistic jokes. And plenty of really naughty bits. If you don’t have a sense of humor, you might want to skip this one.

Love at First Sight only happens in folk songs or does it?
Leanna Oliphant is the youngest of six sisters & her goal is to lead an adventurous life, and it seems as if she's going to get her wish, even without having to help things along (for a change). Mayhap she shouldn't have removed all her clothing to bathe in that not-quite-secluded glen, but now she's caught the eye of a delightfully mysterious Highlander on a secret mission. As one of His Majesty's elite Hunters, Laird Kenneth McClure is on the trail of a missing royal messenger. The brawny warrior doesn't know whom he can trust at Oliphant Castle, particularly when one of the laird's lady daughters offers her help. But bubbly Leanna is a ray of sunshine in his jaded life, and he can't deny the way her soul tugs at his. When the pair of them discover a dead body in the castle's secret passages, Kenneth is fairly certain it's not his missing quarry. Almost. Probably not. But he's beginning to realize things are not all they seem on Oliphant land.
The start of a new series & another hilarious well written book. I know if ever I want a book that will lift my spirits then I turn to one of the author’s. An absolute delight, I was chuckling most of the way through from green paint to ghosts a plenty. The characters have depth & I loved both Leanna & Kenneth, the chemistry sizzled & their verbal banter was so entertaining. My twenty first century self wasn’t happy at the age disparity but it wasn't uncommon then. A captivating read which I devoured in two sittings. I look forward to the other five sisters finding happiness & who will produce the next Laird
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

Great story

I loved this story for all the humor, the sexiness and just an overall light read.. I love how their was a seriousness to it, but with banter all through the story.. If you have ever read anything by Caroline Lee you know she makes a wonderful mixture of funny romantic steamy and mystery..

Highly entertaining and fun! Nothing too deep in this one, nor is it meant to be. Full marks for the subgenre of HistRomCom (self-described by Ms. Caroline Lee herself!). The sisterly interactions were hilarious. The relationship between Leanne and Kenneth was genuine and grew organically. Looking forward to reading the rest of this series.

"Here he was, walking about her family's land like a divining rod." OMG I'm still giggling at that line!! An absolutely fun, tongue in cheek, kind of read! I love this author's sense of humour which comes across so many of her stories. Filled with humour and hot Scots....what more could you want?!

The only thing I wasn't crazy about is the fact that Kenneth was so much older than Leanna. It's mentioned that she's a few years to being one score and he's almost two score so I figure she's about 17 and he's close to 40. Apart from that, I thoroughly enjoyed the story and can't wait to read the rest of this series.

The Oliphant's are back, four generations later, in Bad in Plaid series. If you are looking for a story that is historical accuracy and sweet romance than this book is not fun you. Plaid to the Bone will hold you captivated in this hilarious madcap romp with clever, risqué humor that will keep you laughing out loud, non stop chatter that will have you going in circles and a story line that will keep you interested right to the end and wanting more from Caroline Lee.

Just when you think you have read all you can about the Oliphants, Caroline's wonderful imagination brings us Leanna, the youngest of the six sisters!

Hold onto your tissues because you will be laughing so hard it will bring tears to your eye! Off the charts humor, a cast of characters (some living and some maybe not!), adventure, a mystery to be solved, witty banter and so much more.

Caroline at her best and I have to say humor lightens so much of the heart and it doesn't get much better than this one!

Hilarious story of opposites attract, set in the Highlands "sometime before 1513". Leanna Oliphant, a descendant of the quirky family from the Hot for Scots series, is a fun-loving, quirky character you can't help but love. Laird Kenneth McClure, one of His Majesty’s elite Hunters, is looking for a missing compatriot, and comes to Oliphant Castle to search. He is much more serious and completely confounded by the whole family. You can't help but laugh from the very first page to the author's note. Looking forward to the rest of the series and what antics the other sisters can get into. Can't recommend enough.

The author tells us, instead of historical accuracy, it is an attempt at humor. So if you are a stickler for historical accuracy, than pass on this story.

They're some humorous moments, risque talk, Lord's name used in vain once. I just didn't feel a connection to this couple nor romantic. It is a light read, one suspenseful moment, villains off page, heat level on lovemaking and foreplay 5 out of 5, some prior to marriage.

No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, ends at 92% on my ereader. I can't improve on the blurb, just giving you some tidbits to made a decision whether to read this or not. (ljb)

disappointed

I got to 52% of the book and realized it might be a time travel book. I don’t like time travel books. It started out really good and quirky then a sense of disappointment due to Kenneth talking about what century it was and then I realize … time travel … yuck. Stopped reading

𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄

Ready to pee yourself and sputter your drink …

When Lady Mischief meets Lord of Secrets …

I haven’t read the series related to this one but having caught sight from those Oliphants whatever the era they roam, this was definitely a story I wanted to read.

The youngest of the six Oliphant daughters, Leanna is the mischiefs maker, as she makes do for her missing “penis” parts, as her sisters oft point out. And now because of her father’s edict for them all to marry, she is even more reckless than before. Not against the idea of marrying but the one of becoming a laird’s wife, she does not see herself in this highly demanding position.
Kenneth is on his last mission, so close to his retirement and doing his duty to his clan. So while on the hunt for a missing fellow hunter, he spots, well more like has a full vision of a wood nymph. One who babbles and is so not afraid of him she invites him to her home.

Here the author cooks for us a tastily irreverent tale, stuffed with randy quips, double intendos and bickering. We readers are not spared and are singled out for some fun tidbits. I smiled and laughed at Leanna and her sisters’ antics. At her no nonsense and her wild imagination, and shy and demure she is not, even more once she has set her sight on her prize and Kenneth for him being twice her age, he is the man she wants.

Oh my the words that sprouted from the laird’s mouth !!!!

Fun how from the moment Brodie was introduced, I saw him paired with Fenella, the cook sister, well experimental cook. And next in this new series.

𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹onscreen lovemaking scenes.

I have been granted an advance copy by the author, here is my true and unbiased opinion.

I love Caroline Lee, she is funny, imaginative, and will draw you into her fantasy world very quickly. All of her characters have flaws that are not obvious or major but quirky. Here is this ones fun times.

Lady Leanna Oliphant, youngest of six daughters. She is the prankster of the family. Loves fun and adventure, and wants that for the rest of her life.

Laird Kenneth McClure, kings huntsman, is ready to retire after this mission. He wants to have a wife that will bring him happy, fun times after his long service to the king.

As these two work towards his mission, Leanna works towards her goal. And it all started with a ghost! Yes, you read correctly, a ghost! However, you will need to read the story to find out.

Do they complete their goals? Does Leanna find what she wants? How many pranks does she pull? Will Kenneth understand what he is needing and looking for? Is more in the works for the family helping or hurting Leanna goal?

Come join a ghostly fun time with an author that will have you laughing, and questioning what you think is true or false. In this fun loving, romp into one mischief moment to the next. I can assured you will not regret one second as you start from page one being absorbed into this family and world of jolly fun.

4 STARS, HIGHLAND ROMANCE COMEDY with KNIGHTS

4 STARS for Book 1 of this new Series of romantic comedies during the time of Knights and beginning with a Laird in the Highlands with his gaggle of daughters. (A whole lot of daughters. Hahaha)
Going on in Book 1, plenty of mystery abounds with a haunted castle, mysterious noises, A Hunter looking for another Hunter, the Laird wanting a man he approves for a son-in-law to marry a daughter & provide him a grandson, Laird of McClure will he marry his fey fairy he met when she was naked under a waterfall and the most mysterious thing we readers have been dying to know: Did the Laird's wife, the girls' mother get cured from that terrible infliction of
"Green Dot" malady?

It is a delightful read & only got 4 STARS because of the writing early on. I must say the writing turned to 5 STARS at a later time so here's hoping that Book 2 shows the continued improvement.

Mischief. Laughter. Family. Skeleton. Innuendos. Adventure. Mystery. Spicy. Romance. All my favorite words tied up into one super fun book to read! Caroline Lee does not disappoint in the start to this new Oliphant family series. We often hear history repeats itself and the Oliphants take that theory to the next level. Leanna is definitely Plaid to the Bone, even without that specific bone part, as she is often reminded from her sisters. Poor Kenneth doesn’t know what he is in for as he conducts his hunt for a missing person but he finds more than he bargained for! Just like you, the reader, will find more than you may have bargained for in this wonderfully woven tale of romance and adventure.

I received an advanced reader copy (ARC) from the author and voluntarily leave my review. All opinions are my own.

Another crowd pleaser by Caroline Lee!!! This is book one of her new series, Bad in Plaid. Hilarious fun read! The Oliphants are back!!! This time with the females in the family (several generations after the "original Oliphants") needing to find husbands and have a male heir to determine the new laird. This book is about Leanna Oliphant and Laird Kenneth McClure. Leanna just wants to have some adventure and excitement in her life. Kenneth is one of his Majesty's elite Hunters and sent to find a missing Hunter on Oliphant land. I love the banter between the characters, the lewd comments, and the romance. Can't go wrong with one of Caroline Lee's books!

I received a free copy of the book for my honest review.

A hunter

Kenneth is one of his majesty Hunters sent to find a missing comrade before he retires! He comes upon Leana in the waterfall and it is love at first sight for both of them! Leana is saucy and has a zest for life! But she can spot a liar in a minute and she knows Kenneth reasons are not the truth!
Kenneth thinks he sees a fairy a naked beautiful one who is not shy at all! When Brodie is man at arms is injured then he doubles his effort to find the bandits and his comrade! He didn't count on Leana’s intelligence and her helping him with secret passages and all other distractions.
If you like saucy youngest daughters and a handsome retiring spy that makes you laugh out loud then read on!!! Can't wait for the next one!

remarkably funny, inventive and bold

Leanne is impulsive, bold, direct, impish, playful and definitely not predictable. Kenneth is on a mission when he spots her in a waterfall and it’s insta love. Several times through out the story Ms Lee breaks the fourth wall and addresses the reader. It’s wacky and crazy and hysterical. She devises incidents for the H/h to get into that are slapstick funny. I couldn’t put the book down. Do not expect historical accuracy but hysterical funny antics. loved Kenneth’s and Leanne’s dialogues, innuendo, and quirks. Her sisters were funny and there was Easter eggs about past books and some suggestions that show up in future tales. It’s a fun read and I’m going to read the entire series because, why not.

This is the first book I have read by this author. The press for this book said it was “Laugh Out loud Funny”. For me, not so much.

Leanna is the youngest of 6 daughters. Each of them with special talents. Leanna’s talent is doing practical jokes on her mother. When Kenneth sees her bathing under a waterfall, he believes she could be sent from the fairies.

Both of these people have lust at first sight.

The story has some humor, but a lot of it is simply silly.

The characters are interesting, but the parents are over the top. Each of the sisters seem to be interesting.

I wanted to like this story more. Maybe another book by this author will do more for me.

Started reading this book after plug in Kilty as Sin by Barclay about retired Hunters in the Kings Service. Loved the reverse of Hot for Scots situation with Laird with six daughters needing to marry, birth a son first to become future Laird Oliphant. The parents of Leanna are both a bit crazy in their own way and the daughters all uniquely different that I cannot wait to read the rest of the series. The Lairds take on twisted sayings was amusing. Leanna's supposedly curtailed adventures and shenanigans does not stop Leanna from enjoying life and still finding adventure or enjoying life. Kenneth is on a mission from the King and meeting Leanna and her quirky family adds a twist Kenneth finds enjoyable except for Laird Oliphant's saying 🤣.

One thing that Caroline does better than most all other romance authors – she does not take herself too seriously. The jokes and innuendoes are flying off of the page. I laughed out loud quite a few times. Even her author’s notes are too hilarious. These stories are supposed to be fun (most of the time) and Caroline will bring a smile to your face each and every time. Leanna the youngest who is all about the fun and rightly so, flirts with the kinda staid laird Kenneth (you know he is a Hunter with a capital H). These two have so much fun and this book was such a joy to read.

I received a complimentary copy from the author.

Leanna is the youngest daughter of Laird Oliphant and doesn’t conform to the usual stereotype of a laird daughter. She is full of fun and mischief and is not interested in settling down. That is until she meets the mysterious hunter Kenneth whilst bathing in a waterfall. Their attraction is instant and this story follows their journey which is full of laughter and innuendo’s. There is never a dull moment in this fast paced story and will keep you gripped from beginning to end. Loved the epilogue and can’t wait for Fenella and Brodie’s story.
I received an ARC from the author and leave my review voluntarily.

I appreciated the humor of the story. I liked the characters. Leanna and her sisters antics are a lot of fun. Her parents are a bit hopeless and silly. Kenneth, the warrior, is strong, resourceful, and handsome (of course). The author makes no claims to historical accuracy and knowing that going in, I just had fun with it.

This was a quick , humorous read that I enjoyed as it brightened my winter evening. It had a little steam and some funny moments. I t is written n third person from an alternating dual POV. I believe this was my first book by this author but I am sure I will be reading more.

A Great Introduction to the Series

Plaid to the Bone is the first book in Caroline Lee’s Bad in Plaid series. We’re reunited with the Oliphant family a couple generations down the line. I enjoyed the mentions of the earlier Oliphants.

Kenneth and Leanna are perfect for one another once they get past the hidden identity issue which was a result of the original reason Kenneth was on Oliphant lands. I love when a hero falls hard and fast and the heroine makes him work to win her over. If you aren’t a stickler for historical accuracy and value having a good laugh, I think you’ll enjoy Plaid to the Bone.

Wonderful, Funny Love Story!

Plaid to the Bone is the first book in author, Caroline Lee's Bad in Plaid series. This is the also the first book by Ms. Lee that I have read, but it won't be the last. From the world building to the entertaining and humorous character descriptions, this book had me smiling, and laughing from the very beginning until the end. The story is fun and entertaining with a nice dose of hot and spicy! I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a fun read with a sweet love story and a happily ever after ending. I am looking toward to reading the next book in this series.

most excellent

What’s the most excellent read. I’m trying to figure out how I have missed all these wonderful funny, silly entertaining historical romance novels. Well we have the series Purchased, so I’m off to read the next and see what Bodie and Fern get into and then I’ll just go back and read the other books and all the other ones because a funny Spicy romance is perfection. No one needs perfectly historically accurate fun books to read we need to laugh we need to escape and we need to not think about what do they have to use for a restroom or for their monthlies.

Cheerful nonsense all wrapped up in a story based in some undetermined period in the Scottish Highlands. There is a plot but this is not really important as the light hearted interactions between all the characters is all you need.

Leanna is superb as a young girl who is bold and uninhibited who meets and is attracted to a man twice her age. Kenneth is not the self centred idiot we get in so many of these stories so he is easy to like. The other sisters, who will feature in further books in the series are also a delight.

A good read!

I enjoyed reading about Kenneth and Leanna. A love at first sight romance, he found her bathing under a waterfall not wearing a stitch of clothes. His partner got hit by a couple arrows, one was by his knee and he may not be able to walk without a crutch. Leanna wanted adventure and excitement which she did get , they got married. I highly recommend this book! 👍👍👍👍❤❤❤❤

I appreciated the humor. That’s what struck me most about this tale.

As soon as one of the characters’ inner monologue was uncertain about which century they were in, I knew I wasn’t in this for historical accuracy, as Ms. Lee confirms in the Author’s Notes.

Thanks for the quirky couple, lovely setting, and intriguing secondary characters. I am definitely interested in continuing the series ... sounds like Fen and Brodie are going to have an Iron Chef type competition?

Such a Strange Family!
Who is this delicious man who heats up Leanna Olifant’s blood? – she heats his too and so we have the beginnings of an historically hilarious and romantic tale as only Caroline Lee would dare to write it.
The characters are really well thought out and constructed and what they managed to get up to, makes this story not only interesting but made me itch to read faster so I could find out what was going to happen next.
