Overall: 2.5 rounded to ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Plot/Storyline: 📖📖
Feels: 🦋
Emotional Depth: 💔💔💔
Sexual Tension: ⚡⚡
Romance: 💞💞
Sensuality: 💋
Sex Scene Length: 0
Steam Scale (Number of Sex Scenes): 0
Humor: A bit
Perspective: First person perspective from the heroine. Zero time in the hero’s head.

(These are all personal preference on a scale of 1-5 (yours ratings may vary depending what gives you feels and how you prefer you sex scenes written, etc) except the Steam Scale which follows our chart from The Ton and Tartans Book Club )

Basic plot:
Victoria and Edmund are childhood friends and both fox shifters. Victoria is now out in society and pursing a husband – Edmund makes things interesting by making a bet over who will get an engagement first.

Give this a try if you want:
- Low steam – only kisses here
- Novella length, short story
- Focus on the couple (no mystery/danger)
- First person perspective (I don’t usually see this in a historical setting)
- House party in the plot
- Paranormal aspects – most of the characters are various animal shifters
- Bargain/bet – hero and heroine bet who will get engaged first

Ages:
- I think the heroine is 25 (she mentions she had to wait 7 years to be presented past 18), couldn’t find an age for her but as they are childhood friends I’m assuming it’s similar

My thoughts:
I really struggled with this book, sadly. There was a lot that I think was unneeded, or felt unexplained, things that took away from the couple and the romance and in a short page count a book suffers immensely from that.

I loved the idea behind this novel – it’s just different! A fox shifter romance in a historical setting – how fun! But I think part of my disappointment was the lack of development on the actual shifter aspect. Some things were just briefly mentioned and then we moved forward.

I was sure with the amount of time spent on the sister and her little side romance that she would either have a HEA here too (and I guess she kind of did?) or would have her own future book (she doesn’t, that I could see). As it was, all of it just took away from page time needed to develop the main characters and their romance (or provide some additional world building).

There’s also a lot of time and plot spent on what is proper – I get the strictures of historical society as I mostly read historical, but I prefer it when it’s done in a way that’s not frequent explaining of all the rules. It felt redundant and a bit extreme for this animal shifter world. The dialogue too suffered a bit to me. It felt a bit stilted and I just wasn’t engaged in it.

I’m not sure exactly what I was expecting but I was just left feeling lackluster about this one.

A few random parts/thoughts – sorry I’m mean and grumpy, enter at your own risk

A Bad Paranormal Regency Story from a Normally Excellent Author

I've read this author for years, and I so enjoy her stories based on world mythology and reworked fairy tales. I was very intrigued to see she had started a series based in the Regency Era but about a shifter society that exists at and parallels “regular” society. I've seen some other authors write paranormal Regencies—and have enjoyed them—so I was eager to dive into such a book by an author who has some very serious paranormal fiction writing chops. Unfortunately, I was so disappointed in the book I didn't finish it. It was just so incredibly poorly done, at least for this long-time Regency lover. The book came across as if written by someone who had no real clue about actual Regency times or Regency books as written by contemporaneous or modern authors. Instead, it seems like she watched "Bridgerton" a few times and read a few blogs about some mistakes made in it (like the court dresses) and then just wrote as if she were simply writing a paranormal book. It had no elevated language that all good historical fiction should have. Even worse, the book had many modern phrases that would not have existed during Regency times. She had no sense of the manners of the day and—though mentioned A LOT—or what true propriety was back then. The errors nearly made me growl until I just gave up. I liked the shifter world she built, which was in some ways parallel to the non-shifter Regency world, but the Regency errors and the poorly chosen word just made this book horrific for a decades-long Regency romance lover to read. This is supposed to be the start of a series, and I sincerely hope that, if the author continues, she will do a bit more research into Regency times (as she has done with so many ancient mythologies!) and into the key elements of a good Regency book. I don't think I've ever been so disappointed by this author before and hope not to be again.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review, obviously!

Sweet story set in the Regency Era, but with shifters. Victoria Foxe and her twin, Denise, are finally able to have their "season". Victoria is excited and Denise just wishes she could stay home and read. (Sounds perfectly logical to me, Denise.) When Victoria sees an old childhood friend, who is also a fox shifter, she is happy to get reacquainted, but does not consider him to be a suitor. She and Viscount Edmund Renarton even make a wager about which one of them will get engaged first. So why do they keep ending up alone together in questionable situations?

Words are not enough to describe the journey I went on while reading this book. This was quite possibly the funniest thing I've ever read. I do however have far more questions than I have answers, such as what would happen if Leon and Victoria did marry and have children, would these children be foxes, lions or some hybrid of the two? I'm also severely disappointed by the lack of shifting 😔. Nevertheless, I had a great time and will be continuing the series 🍋🍋🍋

Look, we all know that I would have gone crazy if I had lived in this era. I would feel restricted by all the rules, I would hate all the fuzz about riches and status. And the idea that I as a woman am not allowed to marry down, but can marry up would drive me completely nuts. But I love reading about this era. I was therefore quite happy when BookSprout notified me this arc was available.

This book has everything a good regency romance needs to have. There are balls, there are countless of written and unwritten rules. There are horrible men only seeing women as jewels to wear around for everyone to see. There are some interesting customs and traditions and eventually there is even a very cute kind of love.

What I loved most about this book though is the writing style. Greenwood uses a slightly more old fashioned writing style for this book. It therefore reads and feels slightly different from her contemporary books and I quite liked it. The writing has become part of the world building and the atmosphere and it absolutely works.

The book also works because Victoria is an amazing character to read about. She is not some fierce maiden going against everything her parents want. She is trying to play by the rules and do what is expected of her. Luckily eventually what her parents want from her and what her heart wants from her isn't that different.

The Fox and the Viscount by Laura Greenwood, is the first book in the Shifter Season collection.

This story follows Victoria being presented to her Queen/introduced into society and her romance with Edmund, as childhood friends turn to lovers.

I adored this story. The attention to detail with the characters, outfits and world surrounding them instantly draws you into a Regency era romance novel. With the added dash of paranormal elements, as the characters are shifters, The Fox and the Viscount is a rather charming tale and lovers of Regency romances will be drawn into this story.

I also recommend finding a Regency themed playlist or Chloe Flower to add to the overall vibe of this story.

This was a freebie on Amazon. This is a prolific author who has written many series.

First I have to say the premise of this book is excellent! Shapeshifters in Regency England who live along side ordinary humans & go to each other's balls & such. They have their own Queen. I'm not sure if the humans are aware of the shapeshifters among them. I was under the impression they were.

I was thinking about fox hunts in England that were (& maybe still are) popular. The fox shifters would be in danger every time they shifted. This is never addressed in the story.

So, as much as I liked the story, I didn't feel the writing. It seemed rather fanfic to me. I won't be going on with the series.

After my latest 2 star read I needed a palate cleanser and I knew a Laura Greenwood book would be perfect for the job. Her books are always so light and fun with sweet and realistic romances between a couple who respects each other and that was exactly what I needed after my latest read. Historical romance isn't my favorite genre to read, but I still enjoyed this one and the addition of shifters is a fun one. And as I already read book 4 in this series I knew a bit more of what to expect from this series.

The Fox and the Viscount is told in dual point of views by Victoria and Edmund. They were childhood friends and haven't seen each other in years, but when they meet again they find they still like each other. Victoria finds a suitor who is interested in her, but she can't find that spark of connection with him that she has with Edmund. She keeps thinking about Edmund instead and looking for him at the balls.

This was a light and fun read. I liked how Edmund and Victoria knew each other from childhood and how they already felt like friends thanks to that, seeing them grow closer again now was great. Although I would've liked a few more scenes with just the two of them, but that wasn't appropriate for the time period so that doesn't really happen much. I liked the way they interacted with each other and how comfortable they are in each others presence. I liked the sweets themed wager they place and how it becomes a recurring joke about the lemon biscuits and sugar plums.

There's also a bit about Victoria's twin and her growing romance, which doesn't get resolved in this book, but I realized there is a story about her so I am planning to read that as well to know how her romance ends. I liked seeing the two twins interact and how they helped each other out.

I liked the addition of shifters to the historical setting and while I would've liked to see more of them shifted I think the scenes that deal with shifter type or shifted are fun. In this book there's a fox only event they participate in, which was fun.

To summarize: This was a fun read with a sweet romance. I liked Victoria and Edmund and their romance. They were childhood friends and when they meet again they grow closer. Historical romance isn't a genre I read often and that makes reading the genre a bit harder for me at times. I liked how Victoria and Edmund interacted with each other and how their romance grow. The addition of shifters in this historical romance series is fun and I liked the fox shifters only event, although I would've loved to see more scenes like that.

The first book I've read by this author. Also the first book in a series.

From book description: "a paranormal Regency romance series." The book is set when there's a queen on the English throne, and a shifter queen. This is not a Regency romance. This is a Victorian Romance. But, eh, whatever. Maybe implying that there was a human queen was a mistake, there were several obvious mistakes; or a misread by me. No matter.

Right, so, basically a romance with titled people in England. Two things make this different than most books set in this time period: while not "out" in public, shifters exist and some (not all) are part of the titled wealthy people of England (though not all titled people are shifters); and two, somewhat even more shocking to me personally: the two main characters, who both have POVs in the book, are . . . the same age. No, really. In most books about this time period, the women are something around 17 (at least if it is their first season, like here), and the men are . . . hmms, 30-something? So reading two people of the same age is both weird and refreshing.

Right, so. The main female character is a fox-shifter and has a twin sister. The twin is barely in the book, but looked like a lot more interesting than the main point of view character. The male point of view character seemed like a standard cookie-cutter 'Viscount who needs to find a wife for heir reasons, and doesn't really want to do so' type. The main female character is kind of naive and doesn't appear to be that attractive (ETA: no idea what word I meant there, attractive wasn't it - main POV character sees her sister and thinks she's gorgeous, and they are twins, so . . .; possibly I meant attractive personality-wise?). And has the nerves of a . . . hmm, platypus.

This is a super short book, or an extra long short story. Even so, I found myself becoming bored with the pace, and rushing through the last few chapters. I didn't actually skip any words, but if it had been longer, I might have.

There were a few nice moments, like when the fox shifters ran around having fun as foxes. Though very brief, very short.

Not for me but my friend Lucy loved it so much. She really resonated with the shifter court but she only wished that there was more representation of the actual action of shifting. Lord Leon and his preycist ideology was our least favourite character (which is saying something because they didn't have enough depth to even come across as people.) However I did enjoy the fact that we had free access to the cooking book at the end of the story! Will be making the lemon biscuits 🍋 at some point but wont be placing any stupid wagers on them for some dumb girl (Victoria) to misunderstand. Thank you for this experience, a fantastic start to my reading in 2025.

It's the Season to look for a husband. Victoria Foxe is a shifter looking for a mate. She reunites with a childhood friend, Edmund, but it never crosses her mind that he would be the one. When a lion shifter pursues her and informs her he is in control of her life, Edmund comes to her rescue.
A nice short read where friends become lovers.

This was such a good read. I love how two of my favorite genres were blended into one! I love a good historical romance story as well as paranormal romance. So this story just checked all my boxes and I loved it. It was entertaining, well written and just a good book. I can't wait for more in this series!

Clean Shifter Romance

I started off this series by trying to read The Lady and the Rabbit first but quickly found out I was missing a good chunk of the story and thus needed to backtrack to The Fox and the Viscount first. And this is where it gets a bit tricky...

There are actually three versions of the story - the two aforementioned books and then a compilation of alternative chapters for The Fox and the Viscount. Since these sources are technically the same story, a lot of the writing is basically copied and pasted from one another with just enough tweaks so the reader can pick up on the narrator of the writing even if they did ignore the name at the start of each chapter.

Unfortunately, the result is that events appear out of order with the presentation of the sisters to the Shifter Queen and first ball during Viscount while the first visiting courter is found in Rabbit. As a result, I think it may have been valued to combine two stories together as a story of the twins and their gentlemanly courters.

At the same time and with so much material, I feel the characters really didn't get a chance to have their true personalities shine through. Mischievous Victoria was so focused on propriety and George was rather a mystery to give some suggestions.

Otherwise, they were cute and clean tales of shifter romance, which is rather kind of rare.

This is a quick page turner & a wonderful novella.
The social structure for women is so very archaic even though the highest hierarchy is Queen. I would be more like Denise who cheats the rules just a tad rather than her twin Victoria whom the book is about.
The social season of the year is upon us. This is were mother's present their daughters who have come of age to the Queen & the balls begin for them to find a husband. That's when Victoria & Denise find out their childhood friend, the Viscount is back for the season. Victoria & the Viscount quickly pick up their friendship in secret. It's improper for them to be alone or be seen together because he's not courting her. Though there has been playful flirtation here and there through out the story. Lord Leon is and he is pleasant enough but Victoria feels something is off. Toward the end we find out Lord Leon is in fact a scoundrel, a snob & all around jacka$$. He tells Victoria he plans on talking to father & proposing and that was that. The Viscount heard the Lords words and tone which made him furious. *Here is where I stop with the spoilers*
If you want to read how the story ends & all the pieces I didn't elaborate on, buy now with one click. You'll be glad you did.
Highly recommended.

Victoria wants to make a love match instead of having her parents pick a husband for her. She decides to participate in the season in London in hopes that she might find a husband. Edmund surprises his mother when he agrees to participate in the season in London. Victoria and Edmund were childhood friends that have lost touch but who rediscover each other while participating in activities in London. Will their friendship return and will love ignite?

The love story between Victoria and Edmund is very sweet. There is a bad guy but he is more about pushing the relationship forward than being super bad. This is a pretty simple story about two nice people beating the odds and finding love.

I thought the conclusion was a little hard to understand because I would think it would take a while for the Ton to forget a scandal (that is not really a spoiler). The bad guy could have had a little more story.

I will read other stories by this author and in this series. I think this story is a good, simple story. I recommend this to anyone that is looking for a quick read that's the start of a new series.

This was definitely not up to Ms. Greenwood's usual standards and I have to admit feeling rather disappointed in the book overall. For one thing, it was way too short. There needed to be more character development which would have easily been accomplished by making this into a novel and not the novella it is now. Also, the whole idea of fox shifters in historical times sounds so unique but that aspect was never expanded on, and after the initial introduction of the two MCs being fox shifters it was rarely touched upon again. What a wasted opportunity. And then to introduce a side romance by one of the MC's sisters was just way more than a book this length could really handle without losing sight of the primary romance. Unfortunately, that is exactly what happened. This felt like the author had all of these wonderful ideas flowing through her imagination and wanted to write a full-length book with them but was for some reason being limited to a novella-length book and the end result was that the reader felt short-changed and unsatisfied.

short and sweet but so utterly boring

i was craving historical romance and shifters so i picked ths up, unfortunately it just didn't work for me. I found the characters to be quite flat and the novella length meant that there was no time for the romace to develop. it felt like the author was relying on their chidhood friendship as the basis for their relationship, but since we didn't get to see that part of their life it just didn't bring enough to the story. I also did not like how often they felt the need to explain society rules, like every page seemed to have something about how it wasn't proper to do this or whatever, it was kinda annoying.

I did appreciate the variety of shifters, i always love when prey animals are included, but i do kind of wish it was a shifter only world. humans existing alongside them added nothing to the story and the mentions of them felt entirely unnecessary.

Overall i would say worth checking out if you like paranormal and historical romance

A romantic story about a number of Shape-shifting animal/human characters in a backdrop of 'High Regency' society. Sounds like fun, indulgent, an teeming of scandalous plots.
But alas, those of you that like me wanted a 'fun' romp in this kind of fantasy will be sadly mistaken.
Although the premise, plot, and characters are nice enough, I did find the development of all of these were a bit one dimensional.
I was disappointed with a lot of the potential being woefully squandered and that halfway through the book, I had a vague sense that it wasn't the authors writing but that of an AI ghost writer.
I think what needed fleshing out more was the relationships between characters, their motivations, their needs, and many 'why' questions that make similar stories like this work so much better.
So I am hoping that the next story in the series goes a lot 'deeper' than this obvious 'starter book and make it a series worthy of this exciting premise.

Victoria and her sister Denise were on the marriage market in this paranormal regency romance and their parents are trying to make sure that they get the most advantageous match they can. It seems that both young women are interested in different types of men. Victoria meets her old friend Edmund from the estate close to them, who has decided that he wants to settle down with a wife and he seems to be flirting with Victoria but she doesn't take it seriously. They make a wager, it happened that they were both sought after as future mates. Edmund is very protective of her when someone wants to propose marriage but treats her like her opinion, and thoughts don't matter. A very interesting storyline as well as the characters. This is the story of courtship between Victoria and Edmund. Two fox shifters in regency era London. Victoria and her twin Denise are having their coming out season. The story details how Victoria and Edmund childhood friends meet again and fall in love. Countless balls and fabulous dresses with impeccable manners included.
An absolutely delightful read. I loved the lighthearted blend of historical and paranormal romance genres. If you’re a fan of romance books of any kind, paranormal stories or historical fiction this book will appeal to you. An excellent way to pass a cold winter weekend, curling up with a heartwarming romance hea guaranteed.

Edmund and Victoria . . .

This story was so well done! Set in the Regency period, Victoria Foxe and her twin sister, Denise, are ready to enter their Season to find a husband. Victoria sees Viscount Edmund Renarton, a childhood acquaintance. The two are fox shifters, which adds a new dimension to the story line. Will they consider pursuing something more than just friendship? Is he interested in courting her? And will he make his feelings known before the obnoxious Lord Leon gets to her father first to demand to marry her?

This is a well-written romance with some twists and turns to keep the excitement brewing. The main characters were delightful and kept me smiling. I definitely plan to stick with this series. I really enjoyed it.

"It isn't what you didn't say either,"

Victoria is entering her first season in London. Aware she needs to avoid scandals, and make a good match, she isn’t prepared for the childhood friend she used to get into all kinds of playful mischief with.

Edmund isn’t against marriage, he’s against arrangements and so-called good matches. He couldn’t care less how it looks on paper, he understands he’s looking for someone to share decades with, but when everyone is so concerned with saying the right things, and not making a step society doesn’t approve of, how do you get to know someone.

This done in one quick read is engaging, entertaining, hits the marks with entertaining sibling interactions.

bad grammar and boring

This is really very bad. I remember thinking it was bad the first time I read it, but I picked it up again a couple years later thinking maybe it would be a fun kind of bad. Unfortunately it’s a very boring kind of bad and is absolutely littered with strange sentence fragments and improperly used commas. The book’s interpretation of Regency-era social mores is also very strange and (worse, in my opinion) inconsistent.

I wouldn’t usually post a bad review but the overall review is decent and this book costs actual money, so I felt almost an ethical obligation to warn others. If bad editing and boring heroines don’t bother you, you may enjoy this book.

This is an enjoyable lighthearted read where the author has successfully given us a paranormal romance set in the regency era. So it should appeal to lovers of both genres. Victoria and Edmundy, two fox shifters who reconnected when both Victoria and her twin Denise were in London to celebrate their coming out season. The author gives us lots of details about Victoria and Edmund both about their childhood and what happened when they met again and fell in love. She paints vivid pictures of the balls and dresses but as it's set in the regency era you can expect impeccable manners too!

A heartwarming paranormal romance.

I did not know that I needed a regency shifter au book in my life until I read this book. I absolutely loved this book and the idea of it when I first read the summary. It was not until I started reading that I just fell in love. Victoria and Edmund's story is short and predictable, it was still very much enjoyable to me. I am excited to read more in this world, as the world building was great. I hope that the next books will be longer, but I really didn't mind a shorter read for the start of a new series.

Victoria and Edmund grew up together but have not seen each other for several years. Now is the time for Victoria's coming out and Edmund is being urged by his mother to seek a bride. When the two become reacquainted, it is like their friendship never ended, but is that enough to base a marriage on? Soon Vicotria is being courted by a high-ranking Lion shifter and while she isn't totally against his company, neither is she totally for it. Then Fate steps in to force the issue and Victoria may not be able to have the man that she needs.
