Twenty years ago Angus James woke to find himself in a sterile room. On the other side of the locked door, doctors worked to manipulate a virus, using him as their ultimate pin cushion. He was supposed to be dead - and there were moments over the next two decades when he wished he was - but despite his torturous existence, he remained a fighter. Through pain, love, loss, and heartbreak, Angus traveled a road that took him on a journey much bigger than the room he was confined to. As the world moved forward without him, he fought to hold onto as much of himself as he could, determined to make it out of his prison a whole man.

Outside the walls of the CDC, Angus’s family worked to move on. But between the dark rumors surrounding the man in charge and a twisted new religion that threatened to turn their lives upside down, starting over has began to seem impossible. With more and more of the freedoms being stripped away, and more devastating losses piling up around them, the group found themselves wishing they’d never set foot in New Atlanta in the first place.

And wondering if leaving was even an option

Travel back with Twisted Memories and experience the emotional journey Angus James was forced to take during his twenty years as a prisoner. Discover how he came to be a father, what he did to stay sane during his long confinement, and how he managed to earn his freedom.

I'm a mom of four, Air Force wife, and author of adult and young adult dystopian, post-apocalyptic, and science fiction. I love intense world building and character driven stories that feature strong female leads - as well as a side of romance - and any end of the world scenario. Zombies, aliens, a distant future where people have no clue how the world ended in the first place, you name it, I will create a story there!

Having lived in a lot of different places after more than a decade as an Air Force wife, I love setting my books in cities I've actually lived in to give them authenticity. I've resided in: Indiana, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, California, and Oklahoma but am currently back in my home state of Ohio where I live with my husband, four kids, two dogs, and three cats.

When I'm not writing, you can find me by my pool (in the summer), getting lost in some binge-worthy show or at a play with my husband, patronizing one of the great restaurants in my small town of Troy, Ohio with my family, or traveling. I want to see everything and make a point of visiting a new place every year!

Some of my favorite books are The Hunger Games, Pride and Prejudice, The Host, and The Stand. My favorite movies are Aliens, Jaws, Signs, Say Anything, Everything Everywhere All At Once, and The Greatest Showman.

This review can also be found at Carole's Random Life in Books.

I enjoyed this book in the Twisted series. This book fills in all the gaps between the Broken World series and the events in the first book in this series. This is a series that would best be read in order and I do believe that this series works best when read after the Broken World series. I have been kind of obsessed with this group of characters this year so I was delighted to have all of my questions about what their lives have been like and what really happened answered in this book.

Angus James came to Atlanta to save the world. His immunity has made him a precious commodity. Even though he came willingly and wanted to help, the CDC told his family that he had died and used him for one experiment after another. 20 years of experiments. We also get a chance to check in with Axl, Vivian, Jim, Al, Lila, Josh, and Parv. A lot has happened in 20 years and not all of it was good.

This book covers a lot of time. A lot of the story happens before the events of Twisted World and I did have a moment or two when I wondered why the author chose to wait until the second book to share this information but I don't think it would have worked well any other way. I hated hearing some of the things that happened to these characters. They have been through so much and it just seems wrong that they had to deal with the kind of evil shown in this story.

I thought that Heather Firth did a great job with the narration. This book is told from a lot of different perspectives and there a lot of characters that play important roles. I thought that she did a great job keeping all of the voices consistent and I never had any difficulty recognizing the speaker. I also think that she does a great job of adding emotion to her reading. I had no problems listening to her narration for hours at a time.

I would recommend this series to others. I feel like I have been on quite the journey with these characters and was very happy to find out what happened to them over the years even though a lot of it was heartbreaking. I look forward to reading more of Kate L. Mary's work.

I received a review copy of this audiobook from the author.

Initial Thoughts
I enjoyed this installment in the Twisted series. This book fills in the gap between the Broken World series and the first book in this series. It was really interesting to see what had happened to certain members of the group in the years since they entered their community controlled by the CDC. This book kind of takes everything you thought you knew about the way the community is run and turns it on its side. I thought that the narrator did a great job with this story and I am eager to get started on the next book in this series.

The first book in this series takes place 20 years after the group from the Broken World series, Vivian, Axl and co, finally find perceived safety in Atlanta. I liked it very much, but was longing to know what happened in those intervening 20 years. This is the book I was waiting for!

Best of all is the character of Angus James, the Merle Dixon of Kate L Mary's zombie world, who is imprisoned for experimentation at the CDC after it's discovered that he's one of the few people in the world who are immune from the virus. I felt every tear he cried, I'm sure I did, and his strange relationship with the icy cold Dr Helton kept me completely engrossed. It's one of those books that's so frustrating, because you, as the reader, can see the peril that the cast are in, and you want to scream at them, 'Go back to Colorado! Now! Just go!' Of course, that I felt so strongly shows how good the characterisation and general storytelling is.

I very much liked some elements of the sinister practices going on behind the Atlanta population's back, such as the orchestration of an uprising, leading to a couple of deaths, so that the evil Star's government could put new, restrictive laws in place under the guise of keeping the people safe. Something that *many* think happens in the real world....

The pain of the characters I've grown to know so well was heartrending, and some of this book was the very best stuff I've read by this author. She has a real knack of choosing exactly the right POV for each part of the story, and really seems to understand that sometimes a not fully informed, third party account of another character's situation can tell the reader so much more than the actual words.

This is an excellent book; my only slight complaint is that it seemed a bit rushed at times, with some areas needing more detail; I thought it might have been better stretched over two books. But I still loved it, and the fact that I would have liked it to be two books instead of one says it all, really. 😌

I can't get enough of these characters. I'm so glad Author Kate L. Mary decided to take us back into the apocalyptic world she created and give us some background on Angus and the rest of the crew. Now I'm craving more-more-more.
I read this from start to finish in one night. It was deep, so deep I found my heart breaking for a character I once thought was the biggest ass. This only proves to show the author's ability to captivate and alter what our imaginations perceive.
Thanks for another great read.

With Twisted Memories we get a glimpse of our grumbling hero Angus James from the Broken World Series.....Twenty years in the future! Angus has endured many many years of torture at the hands of the evil Doctors that made and released the virus that killed millions. It's very hard to believe any human beings could be so Twisted in their own minds to not only unleash this horrible virus, but to continue to mutate it to suit their own sick fantasies of what a perfect world should be.

By the end of this book readers, you'll be screaming for more! One creepy thing after another crops up in the pages of this tale of what this little piece of the world is going through at the hands of psychopathic Doctors. What lies ahead for our survivors of Broken World? How much more can they take and will they be able to save those who are still trapped behind the walls of the CDC? Man I love this Series!!

Love, love, love!!!

I love how this book has so many POV's! This brings past and present together answering so many long awaited questions. It makes you hate certain characters more, love the ones you love more, and might make you think about others. I can't wait for the next book!

It wasn’t until I requested audiobook codes for this series that I realized the author did more with this specific setting. This will be the second-to-last book I’ll read/listen to by this author. I’ve listened to many already, and I’ve come to realize the last few haven’t been as good as the prior ones were. Just the fact that she wrote one series, then took that same setting (New Atlanta) and turned it into another series, and then another series. Why wouldn’t she have just created a new series with new ideas? Or simply extended the first “New Atlanta” series? I don’t get it. There’s another author I follow who writes Sci-Fi. He did a long series, then because there were readers/fans that didn’t want him to stop (even though it would have been best for the series overall), he continued by writing another series but using the same characters just a few years later. I read the first in that new series. There was no point to it. Nothing new was discovered. It’s time to move on.

I think the biggest issue I had with this series was the order. Book 1 was book 1. I thought it was all right. Book 2, I found questionable since the reader goes back in time, twenty years prior, when the main characters first arrive at New Atlanta. Who cared that there had been a large cliffhanger at the end of book 1. Then discovering I had book 1.5 as opposed to book 3, I gave that a skim over. That was all about Jackson. And with how he was in book 1, the reader already knew he had issues. So book 1.5 was pointless in my opinion. Had I been one of Kate L. Mary’s beta readers or friends or advisors, someone who could help her with her timeline, I would have suggested changing the 1.5 to the twenty-years-prior story, and making book 2 the present, picking up after book 1. Or she could have incorporated aspects of “the past” with the present. I just feel like the order is all over the place here. Based on the reviews, I guess I was the only person who had this issue.

The whole idea behind this series, that Dr. Helton and Star want to end the human race, hence they release the virus that kills the majority of the population, makes no sense to me. Then they want to create another virus to turn the humans into slaves… What’s the point? There’s barely anyone left!

Again, this narrator just isn’t working for me. There was the mispronunciation of, what I would consider, simple words (for example “figure” is pronounced as “figger,” the random pauses (for example, before “though”). The fact that she narrated book 1 differently from book 2 was interesting, in a bad way. Book 1 had Donahue and Meg. So the narrator narrated all of Donahue’s parts as Donahue and Meg’s parts as Meg as opposed to using a “narrative” voice for the narrative part of the story. Of course, with book 2, it was fixed. I don’t get how it was missed with book 1 though.

Questions/Comments:

There was mention of how one of the subjects had released their bowels after they died. Doesn’t that happen with every single human after they die? What had been the point of bringing it up – specifically the way it was phrased?

Questionable #1: Why did Dr. Helton decide to have sex with Angus when she originally was going to inseminate a female. There was mention of her having to work herself up. Why bother? She’s a scientist. Wouldn’t it have been more science-y to inseminate? It’s not like she couldn’t have had sex with Angus later on, to continue with how the story goes.

Questionable # 2: After their first sexual encounter, Dr. Helton wonders if Angus will know they had sex or if he’d think it was a dream. Of course when Angus wakes up that’s exactly what he thinks – unsure if it was real or a dream. But considering there was no mention of her wiping him off… hello! A guy would know if he had sex or not based on the way his genitals look/feel.

Questionable #3: Why did Joshua not tell his friends and family that the only way for Dr. Helton to have known about his wife’s pregnancy was if they were listening in? It’s like he’s stressing about that, goes home, and says nothing. Instead, they sit around talking about Star and the govt.

Questionable #4: The guy with the missing arm, I thought he’d been seventeen when he’d had it cut off after a zombie bite (in book 1)? Here, he was described as being in his thirties. Anyway, why when Jim went out as a zombie hunter and came across the soon-to-be-missing-arm guy did the guy’s friends wait years before agreeing to remove the guy’s arm? It’s like there were one of two choices. 1. He’ll die – someone will kill him before he turns into a zombie. 2. He’ll die because removing his arm didn’t stop the virus and – someone will kill him before he turns into a zombie. The hesitation during that scene made no sense to me.

Questionable #5: There’s a time after “the baby” – Glitter – begins her testing. Dr. Helton goes to Angus’ room and they’re talking about the baby, how upset they are, etc. When you’re worried about your daughter and what she’s going through, what’s the best course of action? To have sex of course! No. That just came across as very odd in my book. They go from thinking of their child to “I’m horny, let’s have sex.” That’s not gross…

Questionable #6: Why would they have ever thought Margo was dead when no body had ever been found? Wouldn’t it have made more sense that someone took her?

What do they eat? There’s mention of them getting rations, but what does that entail exactly? You don’t read of there being farmers, especially given they’re in a city, so where are they getting food?

I didn't give this book 1 star because it's a bad book, just the opposite it was a little too well written, power hungry scientist torturing people without any remorse, described in such detail, that I was thinking that this is what pure evil looks like. It wasn't even for the greater good searching for a cure, they did it cause they wanted to and at chapter 9 I got to a point where I felt like there's nothing what could redeem these people for all they done, and I didn't want to know any more. If you can stomach something like that go ahead and read it, it's a disturbingly realistic book.

Audible:I love this series! After a virus wipes out most of the population and Zombies are another result of the flu, people flock to a safe town.Of course it's run by the very people who started it all.Told by each person in their own words we get background and then we find out their fate.Heather Firth is a good narrator, though her male voices are sometimes cringeworthy.I was given this book by the narrator, author or publisher free for an honest review.

Once again we step into the Twisted world with Twisted Memories. Twisted Memories takes us on a trip down memory lane as we learn the fate of Angus from Broken World and that he is alive and...well, hmm… not well exactly. Angus has been at the CDC in New Atlanta for the past years being put through one test after another.

Meanwhile, in New Atlanta, the James name is sort of worshiped by the people for what Angus did to save the world. The James’ name is revered by many. Anyone who carries the name James is also put up on a petal in some way or another.

You know I never would have thought that this series could get any better but after reading all the Broken World books and now the second book in the Twisted series I can say without any doubt that they just get better and better. I can’t get enough of this world and like The Walking Dead, I hope it never ends.

I love zombies and can’t ever seem to get enough of them either. And the world-building is out of this world. Not to mention all the characters and all the new ones we are introduced to in each book.

Each book is written in such a way that I can see all the scenes in my head as I am reading as if I am a part of their family and this world. I see it in my head as if I am standing with them as the zombies come out to play and then we all get surrounded and I am looking out into the crowd watching as they fight their way through the zombies. There are times when it is hard to tell the live people from the undead as I can imagine all the blood and gore.

I feel sort of like a narrator as I whip my head around from side to side trying to locate all my favorite characters wondering who needs my help. Like who do I need to give a heads up to next? Who is about to be bit? Who do I give warning to now? I can see all this in slow motion as I stand there with machete in hand waiting to see what is coming next and where Vivian, Axl, James, and the rest of the crew are going. Once I step inside this zombie-infested world I am lost as I take yet another journey through a broken and twisted world.

I highly recommend Twisted Memories to all those zombie fans out there. One-click your copy of Twisted Memories today to begin this epic journey down memory lane! I would like to suggest that you read the Broken World series before reading the Twisted series.

Book 2 doesn’t start where book 1 ended instead it goes back twenty years giving the reader a backstory on each character that entered New Atlanta. You get a behind the scenes look inside the CDC. New Atlanta is the headquarters and home of the CDC. The CDC is a place where experimentation occurs trying to find a vaccine that will cure the spread of this zombie virus.

It took me some time to acclimate to the new character introductions and the change of scenery. I was expecting the story to delve right into the last scene in book 1. It was my fault for the confusion since I didn’t take the time to read the premise. Had I done that I would have been better prepared.

Heather Firth is the female narrator for all characters both male and female. Let me tell you that is no easy task for one person to do. While she does an excellent job role playing all these characters it’s a lot to take on. I prefer a story of this magnitude to have multiple narrators to help assist with all these characters. I need to tell you trying to keep track of them was difficult. Having a unique voice would immensely improve my ability to remember each character. Then there was the confusion of some characters being identified by there last name and then switched to their first name. I needed a diagram to help illustrate how all these characters tied together.

While I enjoyed book 2 I was disappointed with the continued cliffhanger. I hoped for different answers from the conclusion of book 1. Those answers are in book 3. I’m pleased that Heather Firth narrated each book in the series. Her voice was appropriate for all female characters. I managed with her voice for male characters, but a male narrator would have made this audiobook exceptional.

Twisted Memories: A Broken World Novel (Twisted, Book #2) by Kate L. Mary and narrated by Heather Firth is a dark entertaining listen. I recommend this series, starting with book one, if you enjoy the darker side of things or are a fan of zombies/post-apocalyptic books.

This book took me by surprise as I thought it would continue where book one left off, but it does not and that’s OK (I was so excited to get to the next book, I didn’t read the summary). Instead this book ventures through the memories (good and bad) of those involved but we didn’t see much of in the first book. It answers any questions you may have about them and how they came upon their current situations. It leaves you at the end of events for book one. Stick with it even if you are unsure in the beginning and I promise you won’t be able to put the book down once the stories start to unravel.

I’m really enjoying Kate’s books- the writing is smooth, characters interesting, world building is great, and the darkness, well it’s a perfect blend.

The narrator, Heather Firth, did an incredible job. Easy to listen to.

I highly recommend this series for the zombie/post-apocalyptic fans.

Parental guidance/trigger warnings: This is for adults and adults who can tolerate the darker side of life. If you do not fit this, stay away because this book series is not for you.

I received this book via a free promo code and this is my voluntary review. This book is a kaleidoscope of POVs covering the time period of Angus James arriving in New Atlanta and how the James family settled into their new lives thinking he was dead. They try to adjust, have their kids, lose people and wrestle with the rumours and the creepy new religion. Interestingly this also covers the twisted Dr Helton of the CDC and her tests of the mutating virus. She's vicious and its frightening seeing the fate that would have befallen Regan and Kellan from Oklahoma Wastelands series... Dr Jane Helton goes as far as involving herself in her own work, she orchestrates the killing of members of Angus's group, plans the destruction of the Colorado settlement from the Broken World series. Having read the Oklahoma series before this, having this side of Jims story is heartbreaking.. and getting to know Joshua since book 1, makes what happened to him even more devastating. You learn about the relationship she forms with Angus and how she changes loyalty from Star's evil zombie domination plan. There are times in this story when you honestly think shes gone too far to ever come back, but I was genuinely emotional over her fate. This fills in all the blanks from book 1, and sets you up for joining Angus on the flip-side with Meg for Twisted Fate.

Angus is locked in CDC against his will. He is immune to the virus that has taken over the world and the doctors at CDC want to know why. They want to see if they can use the immunity to their advantage They are developing something that nobody will ever see coming.

I have to be honest. When I first started this book, I was annoyed. I didn't understand why we were starting from the beginning. I felt like it was a waste of time. Then I got invested in it. I realized that this book subtly feels holes in the first story that only flashbacks would fill. It answered questions that could not have been answered any other way.

There was nothing I didn't like about this book. Unless you count on my emotions being thrown from one end of the spectrum to the other. There were things I'd wish had been explained a little better, but they were minor. Maybe some time gaps could have been pronounced a little better too, but nothing major.

I fully recommend this book. I recommend reading the first book first. Probably even the novella as well. I can't believe how invested I've become in a trend I always thought a little too repulsive. Maybe it's because it's spun under a different light. Either way, I'm enjoying it and can't wait to read the rest of the books.

I chose to listen to this book after receiving a free audio copy. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

I read Twisted World and Twisted Mind, and I didn’t even pause before I started listening to Twisted Memories. When I started to listen to it, I was a bit disappointed because I wanted to know what happens in the future, not the past! It didn’t take long, though, for me to appreciate learning what happened shortly after Angus and his friends and family arrived in Atlanta…and how he was able to escape the CDC after 20 long years.

Twisted Memories was difficult to turn off once I started listening. There’s suspense, danger, and several times I found out how certain characters ended up where they were in the first book. I’m getting ready to listen to the next book, Twisted Fate, even though I was planning on listening to a different book first. I can’t wait!

The narrator does a great job of timing and voices and, best of all, conveying the emotions of the characters.

If you like post-apocalyptic stories, this is definitely worth your time. It’s more about the characters within the walls of Atlanta, and the zombies outside the walls are just a part of life.

Great narration and I really enjoy the writing. Love the post-apocalyptic world building the Kate L. Mary does. Entertaining story. I think this book would have been better as an ending book for the series this series is a spin-off of, or for this to be the first book of this spin-off series. I didn't read the previous series, so I was missing the emotional connection to the characters of this one a bit. I also couldn't fully enjoy this one because I just want the story to continue rather than dwelling on the past. I'm probably just impatient. This book is kind of morose because you know all these characters are going to suffer. There's lots of POV's in this one, and it gives the story of the going-ons between the other series and the first book of this series. The story ends in the same spot as the first book and the novella, so there wasn't any new scenarios. If you are a fan of either series, you'll probably enjoy getting a deeper look at the lives of each character. I'm excited to see how this story will play out. Definitely listen to the audio if you choose to read Twisted Memories, job well done!

A most amazing book…spanning many years. I always wondered what happened to Angus James…even though I had hints in the other books…I wanted to know more. Twisted Memories takes us back and places us in the CDC and walks us along side what has happened outside the CDC over the 20 years that Angus has been held prisoner. I’m not even finished with the book yet, and it has taken me in so many directions emotionally. Kate L Mary has made me crave the backstory. Twisted Memories shows us what has happened elsewhere while we were busy reading about the James gang in her other books in the series. I must say (without saying, really) that there were many surprises in this book…and one major surprise to me. I cannot wait for the next book in the series.

This volume, “Twisted Memories” could be called a prequel. It gives an account of Star’s father who headed the CDC, the development of the virus, the initial breakout of the virus, Angus’ imprisonment, and the introduction of several key players that appear in volumes one and one-point-five; such as Angus, Axel, Helen, Jackson, and Glitter. It provides a detailed background of elder Star’s work at the CDC before the viral breakout, prior to Jackson Star, Megan, and your first glimpse of Donaghy. In closing, the story brings you up to present in line for the next and final volume. Four.point.five. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

First and foremost, let me squeal my excitement of being back with this gang!!!! I've been in love with these characters for years now!

I just finished the book and let me tell ya, I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. I loved that this book didn't pick up exactly where we left off last time. I so enjoyed reading all the backstory as to what happened to Angus and the rest of the gang.

My favorite part though, the acknowledgements. Thank you, Mrs. Mary for writing these books for your fans to enjoy and love. Thank you for making it work along with your life. Just as we appreciate another kickass book, we appreciate your hard work!

CANNOT WAIT FOR THE NEXT BOOK!!

Twisted Memories: A Broken World Novel: Twisted Book Two was another great read by Kate L. Mary. Angus woke up in a sterile room twenty years ago with no idea where he was. Doctor's decide to use him as a pincushion to manipulate the virus seeing as he is immune. Angus fought hard to stay alive although his life was pained as a prisoner to the CDC. This book brings you back twenty years to the memories of Angus' years as a prisoner. You find out how Angus becomes a father and eventually obtains his freedom. I can't wait to read the rest of this series.

Whoa.... What did I just read! Mary has floored me with Angus's years stuck inside the walls of the CDC!

You absolutely need to read at least the first two books in this series to read this one. However you won't truly understand Angus until you start at the beginning with Broken World.

Mary outdid herself with this one. I totally didn't see the depth to this story coming. With multiple viewpoints and 20 years worth of information, I was left riveted to my kindle trying to absorb every single minute of her story.

I can't get enough of Broken World/Twisted World. I'm completely addicted.

Yes, this is the book I've been waiting for.

The first book in this twisted series is 20 years later from the Broken World series. But I was dying to know what has happened to the gang for the last 20 years and THIS is the book. I loved being back with the gang. This one answered so many questions I had and more.

So good. On to the next book. although I am not sure how it is going all end.

This was fantastic!! It takes us from the beginning...up to the horrific truth!! People can be so evil!! We think of the CDC as a good thing...but now, I am kind of skeptical! lol f there is ever a Zompoc..I am steering clear of the CDC for sure now!! This one starts out pretty sexy too...I really enjoyed this one..and the narration..though good in the first one...really develops in this one...I am on to book 3 now!!! GREAT BOOK!!! :)

YES! Oooh so excited to read this! I thought the previous book was a bit slow/drawn out (still good though) but after reading this, it totally falls into place! This is the back story to the previous book but it fills in all the gaps from when they all arrive to Atlanta to the end of book 1 in this series. Gah, Angus! Oh how my heart bled for him! Very excited to read the next book.

This series is really captivating. I love how the Characters really pull you in. There's twists and turns I didn't see coming. I am loving this series. The Narrator really brings out the characters and the Author has told a really captivating story. I definitely recommend this Series. This would make a great Netflix series.

I love this author and I love her books.
This books gives a lot of background on what is going on at the CDC.

However, fair warning, there is a lot (like 85% of book) of detailed description of torture, abuse and experimentation on people including babies/child (needles, injections) and even pregnant women and that was too much for me.

Lady Mary has done it again. There are a lot of characters in this book. And a LOT of them don’t make it. Some in a great twist of the story line, some suddenly, some in a dragged out state. I have read about 10 of her books and all were well worth the time. Sorry got to go and get the Far from Home book 2.
