Oblivion Song #4

Oblivion song T04

Rate this book

Robert Kirkman is an American comic book writer best known for his work on The Walking Dead, Invincible for Image Comics, as well as Ultimate X-Men and Marvel Zombies for Marvel Comics. He has also collaborated with Image Comics co-founder Todd McFarlane on the series Haunt. He is one of the five partners of Image Comics, and the only one of the five who was not one of the original co-founders of that publisher.

Robert Kirkman's first comic books were self-published under his own Funk-o-Tron label. Along with childhood friend Tony Moore, Kirkman created Battle Pope which was published in late 2001. Battle Pope ran for over 2 years along with other Funk-o-Tron published books such as InkPunks and Double Take.

In July of 2002, Robert's first work for another company began, with a 4-part SuperPatriot series for Image, along with Battle Pope backup story artist Cory Walker. Robert's creator-owned projects followed shortly thereafter, including Tech Jacket, Invincible and Walking Dead.

Honestly, this would be a 5 star book with a better artist. Everyone looks like they have been on a 48 hour bender. The action sequences are too chaotic and ill-defined. Still, I dig the story a lot. These Faceless Men are cool and for every question answered another one pops up.

Another great volume of Oblivion Song! My heart was in my throat the entire time! The only reason I haven’t given this five stars is because I felt the artwork looked a little rushed in places; mainly the first two issues collected here. Other than that, though, WHOO BOY! Bring on the next one!

More of the same.

Kirkman mostly peoples his cast with characters that only seem to think and behave in impulses; "LET ME THROUGH!", "GET OUT OF MY WAY!", "MY FAMILY'S IN THERE!".

It's exhausting.

2.5 STARS!!!!!

This series is definitely on a downward spiral.

It keeps repeating itself, for one thing, with the main character always saying he won't get involved in the chaos, then of course jumping right in. And the director in charge of the operation is always saying he doesn't want the brothers involved, but always sending them in or allowing them to be close by so they can jump in by surprise.

And we're supposed to believe the military wouldn't take over this operation and start sending in elite combat units once hostile enemy forces have been engaged and made an incursion on U.S. soil? Marines, SEALS, Rangers, Delta Force, and Green Berets got benched so the situation could be handled by a handful of civilians?

On the plus side, I was interested in the glimpse we are given of the alien society.

On the minus side, the artist of this series continues to demonstrate a lack of ability in distinguishing characters, flashbacks, and action sequences.

I'm going to finish since I'm so far along, but I have flagging hopes that Kirkman can turn this around before the end.

So, finally finished Oblivion Song. I went through all six books today and I must admit, I loved it even more than I did in first reading. It’s not just beautifully illustrated monsters and amazing world, it’s beautiful story about two brothers and couple more people dealing with problems in their lives. It’s full of love, sadness. It’s interesting, characters’ development is nicely done. I can’t find any negatives really. For me this will always be one of my most favorite series I’ve ever read.

Things heat up as we learn more about the Faceless Men and their role in Oblivion, but for every answer we get more questions. The plot moves along fairly quickly, and while the back-and-forth between Earth and Oblivion can get a bit repetitive, the excellent artwork and the well-crafted tension keep the book from falling off a cliff.

I feel like the Faceless men should have looked different. They just look too humorous. Its an ok series but not something I'm obsessed with like his walking dead or Invinclble.

30 pages of bafflement and then the story kicks in. I simply don't understand how each new volume of Oblivion Song can throw me for such a loop. I swear I remember how the last one ended! This fourth volume seems to kick off with a few unmarked time jumps.

Once you get past the confusing beginning, though, this fourth volume is excellent. It's pretty simple, which I think works in its favor. Ed's wife is a prisoner of the faceless men; Nathan is working with the military to get an extraction mission off the ground. Said extraction mission takes up the majority of the book - with a few hitches, naturally.

We also get a lot more background on the faceless men (who call themselves the Kuthaal) and meet a few (feuding) characters among them. Alien political wrangling! Unexpectedly just what I was looking for.

The art is sublime here - Lorenzo de Felici has perfected portraying ropey mush worlds and lanky, faceless aliens. And as a reminder to myself when I start the fifth volume:

Oblivion song vol 4 was another fantastic read! The story is definitely taking off in a great direction!

The faceless men are really cool and mysterious group that begs the question are they really villains? Hopefully find out sooner then later!

Ed and Nathan’s story’s continues to develop well however there personal life seems to drag the story abit at times but that’s minor!

Robert kirkman has done a great job with this series hoping he keeps the momentum going!!

After a rocky start, this volume's latter half renewed my interest in OS, and the final panel left me wanting to read the next volume immediately.

Realized I posted the wrong review on this one sorry.

This issue was actually the most interesting for me. There was a lot more focus on the faceless men in The Oblivion, but still not a lot of information about what it is exactly they need from the humans. The cliffhanger actually got me interested in wanting to keep going with this series.

This Volume was really action packed, but I'm beginning to feel like they are starting to wind down the story over all. Not saying that this comic couldn't go on for a very long time, but if I had to guess, maybe two more Volumes.
Highlights:
- The Faceless Men, continuing to grasp the English Language, identify themselves as "Kuthaal". They do have several tribes, as seen in the interactions between themselves, but that seems to be their species.
- The Kuthaal are testing and experimenting on the humans. One of them is torturing and killing them for fun. Ed's wife and child almost get killed but are able to escape and hide.
- Humans (Earth side) are preparing to mount a rescue operation, so they begin building a similar structure that is housing the prisoners, so when they jump over, it will be more predictable as to where they'll end up.
- Keith and his wife are still helping the Faceless Men, and shelter Ed's wife and child when he finds them.
- The whole rescue scene is crazy! 1) They are able to get most of the people out and back to Earth. 2) When Ed stays behind to search for his family, one of the Kuthaal is able to investigate our teleport device and replicate one of their own, which allow one of them to come to Earth. 3) They are able to destroy the device and the Kuthaal, but this causes travel to Oblivion to be permanently banned. 4) Nathan breaks the rule as an attempt to save Ed and his family. Upon arriving, his device gets damaged, and he is seconds late to joining Ed as he goes back to Earth, stranding Nathan as the only human left in Oblivion.

This book is still excellent and I can't wait to see what happens next.
Recommend.

Depending on how many more issues this goes, it might be best to read as one straight omnibus.

The story continues into the new direction, exploring now the "faceless men" and their motives. For every answer we keep getting new questions, though. The conflict amidst the Faceless Men is a bit of a sci-fi cliche. As are some of the actions taken by characters in this book, who continue to act in a rush and without any authority. A lot is happening in this action packed volume and it was fun to read, just don't think on it too much.

This is an interesting story, though the art could use some work. Supposedly this guy is some "superstar" Italian artist, but people's faces are all drawn out (like they're really old or have been sick or something) and the action scenes are very chaotic and hard to follow. This time out, we get a bit more info on the aliens who run Oblivion. Apparently, they're looking for a way to get to our world...

Oblivion Song continues with another volume, perhaps my favourite yet. Robert Kirkman starts to dig into the nature of Oblivion and fleshing it out as its own entity beyond just being an alternate dimension full of weird creatures. The so-called "Faceless Men", eerily creepy and wonderfully illustrated by Lorenzo de Felici and Annalisa Leoni, are explored in greater detail than even the human characters in this volume. They have their own culture, their own ranks and hierarchy, and many of them have conflicting goals and motivation. All of this culminates in a sort of prison break storyline and search-and-rescue mission.

The clear star of this volume is Lorenzo de Felici's beautiful artwork. De Felici does an equally impressive job creating an other-worldly setting and expressive human emotions that make Oblivion Song both a surreal adventure and a down-to-earth drama. Beyond all the science-fiction and the almost Slenderman creepiness of the Faceless Men the heart of the story is in the two brothers, Ed and Nathan, and what lengths they will go to in order to keep their families together.

Robert Kirkman is a fine writer. But titles like Oblivion Song are a real disappointment, because it just feels like it needed more time to marinate before it was ready. But why wait, when you’re churning out as many comics as possible in the hopes somebody might develop them for the screen and give them the depth and polish they lack on the page? I can’t begrudge Kirkman for using Skybound to develop so many screen properties. More power to him. But when his comics become little more than fancy studio pitches instead art to succeed on its original merits, there’s just not a lot to love here. Bad comics are sad. But halfhearted comics made by a genius are a real shame.

Oblivion Song, chapter 4 – Robert Kirkman
The story takes a darker turn with the ‘alien’ civilisation having its own inter-tribal rivalry.
#19 – “So MANY of your kind we have now. Answers we seek .. will come MUCH FASTER now.” – Lord Halaak
#20 – “Your time has come. Bring the small one. We must hurry.” – Dakuul to Lucy
#21 – “They almost SAW ME! I barely got out in time .. but I think I know where everyone is.” – Marco
#22 – “I’m just trying to get ANSWERS.” – Nathan to Ed
#23 – “I don’t like this .. it’s like they WANT us to keep going.” – Oscar
#24 – “So effective immediately, all access to Oblivion is cut off PERMANENTLY. I’m sorry.” – Ward

Meet the Faceless Men. Neither faceless, nor men.
I read the first three volumes of this back in September of 2021. And our library just got the rest of them, so I promptly binged the entire thing, rereading the first three first.
The overall impression remains the same. This is no Walking Dead, but then it doesn't really try to be. Not all apocalypses are created equal, but Kirkman seems to like them all. If not zombies, then aliens.
So meet some aliens. They are pretty wild, quite interesting, and better drawn that the people of these books. Onto the next one.

I enjoyed this it’s interesting and a cool idea but man Nathan and Ed are dumb and just keep making things worse. The art felt messy I loved it in other volumes while they were in Oblivion but with so many action scenes it was hard to tell who was who and what was going on. The faceless men are cool but i don’t know why but it bugs me that they’re speaking English and also the fighting between faceless men is almost incomprehensible. Good volume I do like this book but its no walking dead or invincible.

This one has me hooked and I'm interested in seeing where the story goes. It's been a slow build up so far - a bit slow to take 24 issues to get to this point, but the story keeps unraveling nicely and has me intrigued as to what happens next. If this is your genre of choice, you may wan to pickup the collected edition of this. For me, I think digitally reading is good enough - I'm interested in seeing where it goes, but not sure if I'd read it again.

We learn more of the Faceless Men here, and so far their ultimate goals are merely alluded to. We're getting more and more of a glimpse into their people and their world. Again, the gradual escalation and the unfolding of the Oblivion world becomes more fascinating as we go on. Kirkman's antagonists are showing more character than earlier issues. This book ends with a great cliffhanger despite resolving most issues.

3.5 generously rounded ups Story a clear 4 but artwork is all over the place. Story has steadily improved throughout the, great character building but I have serious issues with the artist at times.

I get that oblivion Is alien and I do like the faceless men but much is lost in trying to work out which character is which and what is what overall. The Ob world doesn’t come alive - the art it’s jumbled very one dimensional and just not for me

Volume 4 ramps up the action as we get to learn so much more about the residents of Oblivion. This, by far, had the most action so far and it was a thrill ride. People are bouncing back and forth to Oblivion and its harrowing. The book focused less on Nathan so more characters got to shine. De Felici's was on fire here as he got to really cut loose with the weird alien beings and landscapes. Overall, this was an exciting sci-fi adventure that is getting even better.

The writing/story is fantastic, but the artwork is just good enough that its not a detractor. I've kept thinking maybe I would grow to like the artwork, don't think that's gonna happen at this point, but like I say, the art doesn't take away from the awesome storyline. I'll be reading this series for however long it runs, I'm totally invested, highly recommend!
