A Court of Fairy Tales #2

A Trial of Thorns

Rate this book
A Court above the clouds. Ten fae champions. A kingdom to be won.

Torn from Thorne’s side, Aster finds herself bound to Faolan by the magic of a faerie bargain. To pay off her debts, he expects her to compete in the Alder Trials, a deadly competition to determine the next King or Queen of Faerie.

And not only is Aster a human competing against the impossibly powerful heirs to the Fae Courts, she soon discovers that Thorne will also be competing…

Against her.

Exposed to the cruel, cunning politics of the Fae Courts, Aster must risk everything both in and out of the trials.

And at the end of it all, which will she choose—a faerie kingdom or her heart?

A retelling of Beauty and the Beast, A Trial of Thorns is the second in a new series of interconnected fairy tale retellings that feature strong heroines, swoon-worthy heroes, clean romance, and magical happy ever afters.

Aster’s story begins in An Enchantment of Thorns and concludes in A Promise of Thorns.

I thought this was fairly enjoyable, but overall I wish the first book had been the end. A slight change to the ending of book 1 and the story would've wrapped up.

Aster needing to be protected and carried through everything made her look really weak.

My biggest issue with the story was that Aster is immature in her thinking. We see Thorne who is much older(fae lifespan) and more mature wanting things to change for humans under his rule if he wins. But he recognizes from his father's experience how even a little forward progress results in a huge pushback.

While the Tithe is awful for the humans taken and the people who lost them, it IS better than all/most of the humans being taken and treated the same way. I'm not saying the tithe isn't bad. I'm just saying it's the lesser of two evils. And if you have to choose one, then you choose that.

Aster seems incapable of understanding something that might be terrible, but true. Thorne is honest with her that he wants to keep changing things for the better but that it will be slow. Aster is unable to accept this and decides that she's going to try and win the competition.

This all crops up probably 70% and on of the book, so before that I was fine.

Aster wins instead of Thorne but doesn't tell him she's no longer trying to help him to win. She is taking a very risky move here. See, if Thorne wins things WILL slowly get better for the humans. Aster is the champion of Faolan. So her winning by the fae rules means that Faolan wins and he hates humans.

So she's hoping that the Fae...who hate humans so much they take them as slaves and mistreat them and are fighting the slow changes to protect humans....will accept her as their queen?! If they hate humans to the point where they treat them worse than animals why would they answer to one as a ruler?

Not to mention she isn't actually competing. The competition is set up so that the host HAS to have a stand in.

Not only does she stupidly risk the fate of humanity by essentially having Faolan win, but she doesn't wait to break the enchantment on her servants. She then gives her rowan beads, which protect her from enchantment, to them! HELLO. If she gets enchanted no one knows how to make the cure to fix it. But if her servants got enchanted again she could break it again. Not to mention she is the target of fae interest/hate. Not the servants. I honestly was so upset at her for being that level of stupid.

She gets mad at Thorne for thinking the worst of her but really, she is the worst. If a little change like the tithe almost made the entire fae court rebel, her simply being queen(which shouldn't work but she's the MC so we know it will) would upend things. Not to mention the hard stop to all human mistreatment she wants to do.

So despite liking the last book and feeling like this one was decent, the last 30% of Aster being a complete child made me so annoyed I don't even care what happens next. Will not be finishing the series.

Book 2 brings us to a new realm with new dangers, but we still get the strong-willed, resourceful Aster that we know and love.

After the events concluded in Book 1 we learn that Aster has been kidnapped by Faolan and taken to the Sky Court, this is where Book 2 begins. We learn that Faolan had had ulterior motives all along and he managed to trick Aster into 3 bargains that he is now cashing in on. She has been informed that she will now have to compete in the Alder trials. A competition where the heirs of the various courts go against one another to find out who will win and be the new Alder King or Queen. Aster will be competing as the Sky Court's champion and she will face off against the other 10 realms, including her beloved Thorne. With these trials ahead of her and a host of new characters to up the ante will we see our heroine prevail?

I must admit that I fell head over heels with Book 1 and I could not wait for this book to come out. The writing flows so beautifully and the characters have a great fullness to them. You really do feel like they are real beings and you very quickly can form your own opinion about every one of them. I must say that the unsung hero of this series is Mosswhistle. There is such an endearing quality there that you just fall in love with the character. This book was very easy to get lost in. There are fantastic twists in this book, with some events completely taking you by surprise.

This is a brilliant re-telling of Beauty and the Beast but given a great twist. Any fan of the classic will love it and fans of Fae will love it as well. A fantastic book that I would highly recommend. Now I can't wait for book 3 as it promises even more explosive events than this book!

I really enjoyed this book. It was a nice addition.

Unnecessary, maybe..... But the second book didn't hurt.

Although, I do get quite peevish when humans go into the fae world and they start spouting "human justice". I get it, I really do.... But as Thorne so lovely put it Fae have different ways and they live so long that you can't just go in and start flipping tables and not expect the Fae to start a war. It's incredibly naive and annoying that the human didn't even stop to consider the wisdom behind what the Fae was saying.

But that's picking at strings I suppose.

I received an ARC of this book, and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

Spoilers for book 1 ahead!

After being kidnapped by Faolan, Aster finds herself in the Sky Court. To her horror, Faolan reveals that she made three faerie bargains with him and he has the perfect way for her to repay them: enter in the Alder Trials and compete against the other 9 fae champions. The winner becomes the next King or Queen of faerie. Aster is thrilled to see Thorne arrive with the other champions, but even he can’t undo the magic of a faerie bargain. To make matters worse, he’s one of the other nine champions she has to compete against…

I was genuinely curious to see where this series would go after the first book. With An Enchantment of Thorns being a Beauty and the Beast re-telling, I wasn’t sure what to expect of the plot for this book. But this book went and exceeded all of my expectations!

First of all, the world-building was once again stunning! I love all the unique aspects of the fae in this story. While the beginning was a little slow, the pace picked up quickly and remained intense up until the end! The Trials, in particular, had me on the edge of my seat and the ending of this book left me shocked! Like An Enchantment of Thorns, the ending left me longing for the next book immediately!

The relationship between Thorne and Aster makes me so happy, even if I got a little frustrated with Thorne at times. Another underrated character is Mosswhistle who is honestly the MVP of this book! I’m genuinely curious to see the roles other characters will play in the final book!

I have a feeling the last book in this series is going to be even more action-packed than this one was! I’m looking forward to seeing how everything goes, but I really hope we get a happy ending to Aster’s and Thorne’s stories!

I highly recommend this series to readers who love clean but swoony romance, fae, a strong heroine, and excellent world-building! If you haven’t read the first book, I would highly recommend that one as well as it is a fairytale re-telling and enemies-to-lovers romance!

I loved the first book so was very excited to read this second book and it did not let me down. Aster finds herself part of the Fae Alder trials which are cruel and cunning and also against Thorne! Oh What to do? I love the world created and the twists on the fairytale retelling that is my favourite and that ending! Well let’s just say I am eager for book three!

A Trial of Thorns is the second book in the A Court of Fairy Tales series by Helena Rookwood and Elm Vince and it was epic. The hints of the beauty and the beast tale are there but what if beauty was trapped by another beast and this time all the fae courts were involved, with the fate of more than just a crown on the line. This beauty is determined to save herself with her princely beast by her side.

This book was stressful because while Aster may have found her magic, she might have lost her mind a little bit. Aster is strong, clever, and powerful but being with the fae may have changed her too because she has become a little reckless. When she realizes the things the human tithes go through she starts to act without really thinking things through and that causes a whole lot of trouble. However, I love that Aster is willing to face whatever the fae through at her, she may have to take their insults (for reasons) but she doesn't let them fool her into believing she is worth so little. Aster knows her worth, knows what she can do, and is willing to do anything to help others. Aster for all her thorns cares about life, not just human life but she cares about the fae too, even if they don't all deserve it.

Thorn surprised me in this one, he so made my heart happy. He's affectionate with Aster, all kinds of flirty and protective but he also believes in Aster, knows how strong she really is, and doesn't begrudge her for it even if he is fae. Thorne and Aster truly love each other and that is never more obvious than in this book. Their interactions with each other are so adorable, and the chemistry is very real, not to mention their beliefs do line up even if not perfectly. However, I will say that when they fight disasters tend to follow which makes for interesting plot twists and danger to follow. Something was said in this book and while Thorne doesn't think it's possible I have a feeling that it's true and I also believe it has something to do with Aster's past as well. I think I'm right and it would be great if I was but if not then that's okay too.

This story was totally set in faerie, the Sky Court to be specific. High above the clouds is a palace that is prince Faolan's domain. I suspected Faolan at the beginning of An Enchantment of Thorns and by the end, I knew that Faolan was a jerk however I could never imagine the evil that lived underneath his charming facade. The fae is truly devious beyond belief and I was calling him a butt throughout the entire book especially when I learned about his real feelings towards Aster, that was a doozy. However, his sister Aurora was a little surprising, while she might still be a little out of touch she isn't as bad as I would have thought, which makes me wonder what when wrong with Faolan.

Everyone is in Sky Court for the Alder Trials, everyone wants to rule which of course is gonna make things interesting. The story is dramatic in fae fashion (fae behaving badly) but it also has the lavishness of the fae with balls, beautiful gowns, tricky fae, and delicious food. The magic and the potential for danger all set a thrilling tone for the story. With the familiar faces of Vanna and Mosswhisle that are allies and the new faces of the heirs of the courts everything was fascinating. I loved learning more about the courts, meeting their people, and figuring out just a small fraction of fae politics. The magic is represented more because of the trials and what the contestants have to do. I will admit that Faolan was very clever with the way he works the Alder Trials, no one could really see what he was doing, and he most definitely was tricky when he came up with everything. No matter how much I hate Faolan I have to give him credit for that but I'm hoping karma catches up with him soon.

I loved A Trial of Thorns, it was even better than the first book filled, love and hate, battles big and small, fairy bargains and fairy crowns, a battle of wills and magic, and at the center of it is a romance that brings a small to my face and makes me happy. I love Aster and Thorne and I can't wait to see how their story concludes in their final book, A Promise of Thorns.

An amazing and enthralling sequel

-Big thanks to the authors for trusting me with an ARC of their book-

WARNING: The following summary contains spoiler for book 1 (but the review below is spoiler free)
When Faolan kidnaps Aster from Thorn's palace, he announces her that she has to compete in the Alder trials in order to pay out the favors he did her in the past. Being the only human competing in the trials that will determine the next King or Queen of Faerie, Aster also learns that she will have to compete against Thorn. How will she get out of this? Will she survive the ruthlessness of the fae?

I absolutely loved this book; The first one was pretty good, but being a Beauty and and the Beast retelling, it lacked some suspense. Well, there is plenty of suspense in this one! I did not at all expect this to happen after the ending in book 1 but it was an amazing surprise. I couldn't put the book down, it was enthralling, exciting and surprising. I loved the trials and how the authors managed to highlight Aster's skills. I was glad to encounter some of the secondary characters of book 1 that I loved and they complemented the story beautifully. The subplot was pretty good too and fit Aster's personallity so perfectly... I really don't have anything bad to say about this book. It was fast-paced, action-packed, beautiful and exciting. I loved Thorn's and Aster's realtionship and how it developped, loved the "villain", the trials, the descriptions of the dresses and of the castle... This world is full of magic and unique ideas and I can't wait to dive back into this great story with book 3!

I would definitely recommend if you enjoy fantasy, for instance, The Cruel Prince or A court of thorns and roses!

Wow what a very exciting tale this is! This series just keeps getting better and in this, book 2 Aster is kidnapped by that horrible Faolan, the prince of the sky court and taken to his sky kingdom up above the clouds and kept asleep for two months. Upon awakening she is told she would be taking part in the Alder Trials which took place once every two hundred and fifty years and she would be his champion. Aster could not refuse because she owed Faolan three bargains and he threatened her with her family's life. These trials were games in which representatives from each court would compete against each other till a winner was declared. The winner would, after killing the present King, be crowned King themselves and obviously Faolan had plans to rule. She was pitched against the highest nobles of Faerie, who all had their own magical powers, but she was an enchantress so was powerful to. Except that Thorne asked her not to use her powers for fear of turning every fae against humans, who they already hated so much, so her hands were tied and she feared she did not stand a chance in the three trials. Furthermore she was marked as a hated human and many an attempt on her life was carried out by a number of fae from the royal courts. This story reminded me of the Hunger Games, in it's very tense moments, our heroic character, Aster and the duplicitous way the fae played their games. I loved the many heart stopping moments and the fact that Aster never once wavered in her ideal of saving the humans and granting them the right to rule themselves. I am sure we have not heard the last of Faolan as he is wily and cruel to the extreme so I long to be reading book 3 soon!

This book is the sequel to an excellent and enjoyable Beauty and the Beast retelling. The story continues in an unexpected way, with Aster being forced to compete in the Alder Trials for the Alder crown, as first human ever.

Just like in the first book, the writing style is nice. You get to know the other competitors and the courts they belong too. It’s really useful that the first few times their names are mentioned, their court is mentioned as well, makes it easier to remember who is who. Some familiar characters will return as well, with their personalities still the same.

The storyline has a few plot twists, but has some predictable moments as well. I really enjoyed is as a sequel, but missed the humans of Rosehill. Hopefully they will return in the next book, a Promise of Thorns. The same goes for Aster being an enchantress, I had hoped we would get to know her specific skill some more, but not that much attention is given to it in this book (though I understand why).

Compared to other stories, I liked how in this one Aster and Thorne always make the effort to listen to each other and be understanding in the end. This cuts down on pointless arguments that could have been avoided way earlier before they escalated.

So overall, if you’ve read an Enchantment of Thorns, I would really recommend reading this one (and the next one) as well. For the ones who haven’t read Enchantment yet, you should really have a look at it, it’s definitely worth reading.

Thank you for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review. My review isn’t influenced by this, my opinion is 100% my own. I look forward to the next and last book in Aster’s story.

This is book two in the A Court of Fairy Tales series. Almost any synopsis I give will lead to spoilers for the first book, so I will try to give a very basic overview.

I can tell you we are still following around Aster and Thorne, and watching Aster navigate through life being around the fae. We meet a lot more fae in this book, and learn more about the different fae courts in this world. Thorne is part of the Forest Court, but then there is the Sky Court (which Faolan belongs to),

In this book, the focus is mostly on a competition where a member of each court competes in three different trials, to see who comes out as champion and will become the next Alder King. The thing is, Aster is part of the competition, and not all fae are keen on humans.

Thoughts
This book was just not for me. I'm all for cute romances and saving each other, but these two (Aster and Thorne) are a little too obsessed with each other. Their thoughts and actions were too predicated by their love for each other. They could not really stand on their own, and there were times when I thought Aster might but it didn't fully come to fruition. I wanted less damsel in distress and more working together. Can they just think with their brains and not their hearts? They made some bad choices, especially Aster, who was mostly thinking with her emotions which was not wise in her situation. She needed to think about everything that had happened and that she had gone with, being around the fae thus far, before making rash decisions. Even if she thought it was right.

I still hate the word "petal" being used as a term of endearment. It wasn't cute in the first book, and its still not cute.

I still found the premise of the book intriguing, but the execution was lacking.

This is a great book and series!! You must read An Enchantment of Thorns first, however, because you don’t want to miss any of this story!

Aster has been kidnapped by Faolan and taken to the Sky Court and told she must compete against the prince and princesses of the various courts to fulfill the debts she owes him by him doing favors for her.
She meets up with Thorne and they strive to win the contest.

Faolan is a smooth talking trickster and betrays Aster’s trust in him at the worst possible moment leaving her with a hard choice to make.

There is nonstop action in this second book that will keep you reading into the wee hours of the morning because you won’t want to put it down! Aster finds out that not all Fae treat humans fairly or humanely and is determined to do something about it!

I love this series and highly recommend it to readers old and young who love fairy tales and romance between Fae and humans. The writing is excellent and the plot superb so you will not find any “dry” areas in it! It is so easy to picture oneself right there where all these events take place. Faolan’s true nature is exposed and the stage is set for the thrilling conclusion in the next book as loose ends are all tied up!

Don’t miss this opportunity to start reading these two books today and you’ll be as eager as I am for the next book to come out to see what happens!! Believe me you’ll be glad you decided to read this series!!

I liked the first half, but just couldn't stand the heroine in the second half. I do understand her reasons, but I think she was hypocritical. She wanted to save her people, but is okay with killing fae. She hates being lied to, but lies all the same. Not to mention the sheer magnitude of her betrayal to Thorne. She gets mad at him for his prejudice of humans, but is also prejudiced against the fae. The Alder Trials were predictable. The ending felt rushed and I was kinda expecting Thorne to at least act like someone betrayed, not give in after a half-assed apology. I think that what put me off the most is her blatant disregard for Thorne's feelings. He may be fae, but this book already established earlier on that he has feelings too. She didn't even feel any remorse about what she did to the Alder King, you know, Thorne's father?? She thinks she's some kind of genius with her plans but expects Thorne to save her the moment she fucks up. She betrays him then gets mad at him for not saving her because he's apparently still "prejudiced" against humans. Girlie is just a plain gaslighter. When the trials ended instead of getting her revenge at Faolan she was like "I'm free now right? Right??" like she momentarily forgot about the bargain. I also don’t get why she never tried to kill Faolan at least once, but I guess it's so she could do so in book 3. I do think that she loves him, it's just that she loves herself more. But thank heavens Mosswhistle saved this book.

(Note: I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.)

Aster’s story continues after the big plot twist in An Enchantment of Thorns (A Court of Fairy Tales Book One). A Trial ofThorns grows away from being a Beauty and Beast retelling, allowing Aster (already a stronger character than Beauty/Belle) to gradually become the driver of the story’s action instead of royals and powerful fae (yes, please!).

In this book, the court fae are poised to hold three magical trials in order to choose the next king or queen of the fae, and Aster is forced to become the Sky Court’s champion. The trials reminded me of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Mosswhistle is its usual perfect self and poor Aster, after a slow start, continues to grow into an independent and brave heroine. I really appreciated the way she challenges Thorne over the treatment of humans. She doesn’t let him off the hook or ignore his shortcomings just because they’re in love.

This book has a different feel (from the clinical stone of the Sky Court) than An Enchantment of Thorns, and I very much hope to see more of the Folkwood and its dark fantasy elements in the next one. Besides, Rookwood and Vince excel at writing natural settings. Whatever happens, I’m looking forward to reading what Aster does next.

Thank you to the authors, Elm and Helena for allowing me to read an ARC of this book. This is my honest review.

First off, Mosswhistle is 100% my favourite character in this entire series. I love how loyal to Aster they are, and just it's unwavering devotion to Aster. They made this book for me, and they are everything.
Much like the first book, I loved this one. I love the Throne and Aster dynamic, I think they are so good for each other. We do see a different side to their relationship in this book, and they experience their first ups and downs of them us a couple. Despite having some differing of opinions, ultimately they are working towards the same goal.
The Alder Trials are full of adventure, and really show off the ruthless side of the fae. Aster also learns the terrible truth about the humans sacrificed through the Tithes, and knows she must jump into action and save the humans from the fae. I cannot wait to see Aster and Throne take over the fae world. I feel like this will be an exciting journey.
Faolan is the perfect villain. I love him and hate him all at the same time. I hope we get to see his demise at some point in the next book. I feel like that will be very satisfying!

Bring on the third and final book in Aster and Throne's story!

Wow! I loved this book as much, if not more than book 1. This captivating tale of love, friendship, betrayal, action and adventure kept me turning the pages and needing to know what happened next.
Aster - she is one tough human/greenwitch. She continues to fight for herself, for Thorne and now, for all humans. She grew so much throughout this book. She overcame many trials and obstacles thrown her way. She is definitely a fighter and a survivor!
Thorne - I wanted to love this character all over again during certain parts of the book. A few times, I wanted to go knock some sense into him, lol.
Mosswhistle - he continues to amaze me. He devotion to Aster - his cleverness, sneakiness, his ability to adapt speaks volumes to his character. I wish I had Mosswhistle in my life!
Vanna and Aurora - I loved both of these characters! Friendship and believing in what is right over the norm and what is expected seemed to be more important to them and I liked that.

The descriptions of the Sky Court were amazing. I felt like I could close my eyes and see myself there.

I can't wait to read the next book!

This second book sees the action move to the Sky Court where Aster and Thorne must compete in the Alder Trials, on opposing sides, in a contest to determine who will become the next high king of the Fae. As a human among Fae, Aster is out of place, looked down upon and horrified by the treatment of the humans used as servants/slaves by the Fae.

This story was less predictable than book one. As a re-telling of 'Beauty and the Beast' book one had a basic framework wherein you knew to a certain degree what was going to happen. Even Faolan showing up at the end was obvious from fairly early in the book. In book two it is much harder to predict an ending which makes it all the more thrilling and exciting to read.

After the cliffhanger ending of the first book I was worried that there would be another cliffhanger here, but although there are lots of loose threads to be picked up and tied off in the third book, there is no cliffhanger as such making the ending is much more satisfying. Very eager to read book three.

Helena Rookwood and Elm Vince has created beautiful and intensely deep retelling of Beauty and the Beast, oh but it is so much more. Book One, 'An Enchantment of Thorns' was such an emotionally descriptive and powerful retelling that left us with the ultimate cliff hanger. In Book Two 'A Trail of Thorns' Aster was taken to the sky court by Faolan whom she thought was a good friend. Now she has to make good on her fae bargain to Faolan. The betrayal is great and the price greater, and the faerie kingdom is at stake. Duplicitous Faolan has a plan but how forthright is Aster, at least her intensions are good. Oh this is such a good story, I just can't get enough of this writing duo's books and if you like Sarah J Mass, Emma Hamm there will be no disappointment. Swoon worthy? Yes. Intensely exciting? Yes. Beautiful sexy fae? Yes. A multifaceted tale worth reading again and again.

Silver bells I didn’t think this series could get any better, but HOLY MOLY it did!!! This book was even better than the first one. My love for Aster and Thorne has grown tenfold. Of course, there were moments when I wanted to scream and cry because both of them are so damn stubborn. I really wasn’t sure if both would make it out of this together, as in standing by the other’s side for better or for worse. I’m glad they proved me wrong and there wasn’t any unnecessary drama added to their relationship.

I gotta admit, though, at first I thought this was going to be a love triangle. Thank god that was just me clowning around as usual...

Anyway, this book was amazing and a fantastic sequel in this new series. It kept me on the edge of my seat. The world building and imagery is so beautiful and the angst—perfection! I can’t wait for the next one!!

I received an ARC of this book and I want to thank the authors for it.
After the first book, An enchantment of thorns, I was excited to find out what happened to Aster after Faolan got her. I was pretty intrigued by the prospect of reading about the other courts and finding more about Aster's powers and about Thorne. The story is addicting and I finished it in today after I started reading last night.
The plot is good and well written, the action is clear and how he proves it easy to follow. We meet new characters but we also have development is Aster and Thorne. We see how much Thorne cares about Aster and how much he loves her. Aster is once again strong, determined and willing to fight the fae to prove humans are worthy.
All in all it was a great read and I can't wait for the next book.

⚡️ Trial for the next ruler

⚡️ Fae and green magic

⚡️ Funny side characters

⚡️ Adventure and action

⚡️ Great world building

This was really different to book 1. Book 1 was a retelling so there was an expectation of where it would end up. This wasn't a retelling from my knowledge but I still really enjoyed the book. I loved seeing more of the cultural aspect of the fae courts and how callous the fae are, especially when interacting with their human tithes (read slaves!). There was a little more action in this book and a little less romance which I didn't mind. I look forward to seeing how the third book continues the story.

I was pretty disappointed in this one after enjoying the first. Thorne was much more obnoxious but the bigger issue I had is that the idea that Aster could formulate the master plan she did & actually carry it out was just not believable. The girl got her feelings hurt over getting wine spilled on her dress & it was a multi-page ordeal but we’re supposed to believe she has the balls to overthrow a patriarchy & kill a fae king? The romance got boring fast & the stakes were supposed to feel high but they didn’t.

This is such a fantastic sequel. The Alder Trials is a great setting to add more depth to the world building begun in book 1. There are so many great moments here. Meeting the other court heirs really gives a great illustration of the different fae. Aster's character has come such a long way from where she began and her relationship with Thorne is so fantastic. It all just makes me anxious for book 3!

I loved the first book, and this one was just as good! The Alder Trials were thrilling and it was interesting meeting the other Fae and learning about the other courts. Fallon was infuriating, Aster was strong but flawed, and Thorne was a classic troubled hero. The ending wasn't a cliffhanger like the last book, but a nice open ending that allows the story to continue. I can't wait to read the next book!
I received a free copy of this book. This is an honest review.

While the first book reminded of the fairy tale (beauty and the beast), this book reminds me a lot of ACOTAR.
In this book the different fae courts play a bigger part and many new characters are introduced. I like that the author decided on a sort of hunger games action plot. The author did a nice job of keeping a steady pace through the entire book.
Just like the first book, this one too leaves you hanging and I look forward to reading the final installment.

I've said this in the first book - It's a really slow start, but if you stick with it the author doesn't disappoint. I thought I feel in love with Thorne and Aster in book one, but they continued to grow on me. Aster is one headstrong individual, with passion, determination, and all "I can do it on my own" attitude. She has a huge heart that get's her in trouble. BEWARE the author leaves you on a heart tugging end making you want to read the third!

I didn't like a lot of the tension that was being driven by Faolan. I don't like him, and I never did. Aster had choices to make and in the end I feel like she hurt herself and the people she loved more than helped. She didn't consider her sacrifice to be more than what she saw in front of her face until Thorne pulled her blinders off. I didn't agree with Aster's approach and now she went and ruined it for everyone. I'm still gonna read the next book lol!

Thrilling tale

I loved reading this book. After the cliffhanger ending of book one, it was agonizing to wait for this one to come out. But it was worth the wait. The thrilling ups and downs in the story had me riveted. The end of this book wasn't quite as bad to leave off on as the last one, but it has left me anxious to read the conclusion. Sadly, this means another wait.
