Short version: It's a coming of age story, which I'm often not overly fond of, and I didn't feel it gave me something new in terms of those, I didn't care much for the characters and felt certain developments came too quickly to feel like a satisfying payoff, and while there were interesting elements of the setting and magic system, it also felt so very familiar.
I just wish it did more than it did, to be honest. It feels so familiar in tropes, story developments, characters, even magic system to an extent, and I just wanted to see them either put together in a new way or a twist to them. If not that, then at least a character I could truly root for, but even there I was disinterested in our main character - and I tend to not find the characters of coming of age stories terribly interesting, historically speaking.
But it was also rather short, meaning developments came quick, revelations came quick, and the revelations were explained through our MC rather quickly, so I could turn off my "hmm I wonder-" part of my brain comfortably and not miss anything.
I do weight story and setting highest, with characters playing second fiddle to those, but unfortunately it just didn't pay off for me as a reader. It feels like a coming of age story in a fantasy world, it paid off on that premise, but it didn't bring anything more than that either.
