Spirits Through Time #1

Charmed by the Past

Rate this book
She’s researching her family’s genealogy, but she never expected to become history herself.

Sarah Johansson is planning a family reunion when a photo of a little-known relative sparks her curiosity. A closer look at the post-World War I image causes her to tumble back in time to 1919 and into the hospital room of a brooding, wounded infantry corporal.

Jacob Bellamy is done with war and everything it involves. After risking his life in the trenches, he hopes to finally find peace by retiring to his family’s farm. But when the war’s toll strikes too close to home and lands him in a hospital bed, the last thing he’s prepared for is the beautiful, mysterious woman who barges into his room and demands help—or the long-dead feelings she stirs inside him.

As Sarah tries to unravel clues about her family’s history, her attraction toward the sexy Army veteran only grows. But her time in the past is growing short, and when an old wartime enemy of Jacob’s sets his sights on the blond beauty, Jacob will stop at nothing to keep her safe...even if it means losing her for good.

Aimee Robinson is a lover of romance novels in all forms. Her absolute favorites, though, are the ones that offer a little bit of something extra: time travel, guardian angels, good old-fashioned meddlesome grandmothers with a supernatural secret to hide, you name it.

She believes romance novels should transport you from the humdrum to the swoon-worthy, preferably while being curled up on the couch with chocolate and tea (or wine...or both!). Aimee’s overactive imagination lends itself to fun tales with emotional adventures, sexy snark, and happily ever afters.

When not writing or reading, Aimee enjoys spending time with her husband and keeping up with her two young sons.

Did not expect the ending to make me that emotional (in a good way) Full RTC.

Sarah/Jacob’s songs: Work Song by Hozier and Hold Back The River by James Bay

A sweet and steamy time traveling romance. When Sarah Johansson is yeeted back in time to post World War I Baltimore, she comes across handsome and stern Jacob Bellamy, a soldier who's dealing with trauma from the war. Once Jacob agrees to help Sarah, they build a once in a lifetime connection and Sarah discovers that she's stronger than she thinks.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Sarah and Jacob were great leads. Sarah wasn't just a "strong, independent" woman. I think so many writers get lazy when they're writing strong female characters. To them, strength means not being allowed to have any weaknesses or insecurities...which is so dumb and also unrealistic (As a feminist, sometimes I just want to grab writers who create these characters and say ACCEPTING HELP DOESN'T MAKE YOU WEAK DUMBASS) Anway, Sarah is strong and has her own career, but she's also kind, generous and a little unsure of herself. In 2021, she feels stuck in her job as a medical writer, so she throws herself into planning a big family reunion and researching her family’s history. Sarah is also smart! She understands that she needs to stick with someone who's familiar with the time-period and the area so she's grateful when Jacob offers to assist her. She doesn't do the whole "I don't need your help; I can handle myself!" routine that happens so often in time travel romance (and what's funny is that right after they say that they don't need help, they end up in a dangerous situation that could've been avoided had they accepted help 😩)
Jacob is great too! When he meets Sarah, he's immediately like "MUST PROTECT" but not in an annoying or pushy way.  He offers his help; he doesn't force it on her. His whole backstory is heartbreaking and is a reminder of how people with PTSD were treated back then. I'm usually not a fan of Alpha men, but Jacob is such a sweetheart and gentleman that it balances out the more...caveman aspects of his personality 😭😂

I took a star off because there's a dumb conflict in the third act that was clearly just thrown in to separate the two leads. It was so obvious that I cackled when it happened. But overall, this was a solid four star read. I read time travel romances for escapism and this book gave what it needed to give.

ALSO (SPOILER) IS THE "HERO" IN THE SECOND BOOK?!? *IN SHEREE WHITFIELD VOICE* HELL TO THE NO, NO....NO NOOOOOOOOOO. HE'S AWFUL (AND THIS IS COMING FROM A SEBASTIAN ST. VINCENT AND VALENTINE NAPIER STAN). UGH. I'll probably still read his book though.....

Charmed by the Past de Aimee Robinson Serie Spirits through Time libro 1

Argumento:

I got this book as a kindle freebie a while back, and finally read it. I don't want to say it was bad, but it wasn't great for my first time travel romance. I found myself not wanting to pick it up to read, and skimming a lot of parts. There was mostly just a bunch of little things that annoyed me. I thought there was an overuse of words like 'friggin', 'darn', 'crap', and some other language with that same energy. To me, it makes the writing feel clunky and juvenile, and it's not just because there fake cuss words though that might have something to do with it. It just felt like unnecessary extra words to show someone as modern, but I, as a modern person, don't actually know anyone who speaks like that. I also thought the military speak in bed was weird. I thought the military speak outside of a military setting was an odd choice for a character with PTSD who seemed pretty apathetic toward their time in the army, but it was really weird in bed. I was also annoyed by the description of the heroines modern clothing choices, and her obsession with her job. Descriptions of clothes and jobs are typically why I struggle with contemporary romances. I want to preface this by saying I enjoy being able to independently make and spend money as a modern woman, but I do think working can suck. And when I am reading to decompress from work, I really don't want to hear about someone else's job. And it really bugged me that this girl literally time-traveled back to 1918 and was still obsessing over her job as a medical journalist, which doesn't really seem like a super exciting job. Despite my complaints, this book did make me realize that I would probably enjoy a wwi romance, if any exist. Overall, I'm sure there are people out there who would enjoy this book, I'm just not one of those people.

Casual Profanity

I love time-travel romance, and the cover of this book led me to believe it would be an enjoyable one. Unfortunately, I did not find it to be so. As most time-travel books do, this one started in the present time. The casual profanity of the book and the careless attitudes of both major and minor characters turned me off right away. I actually never got to the time-travel part of the book because I was just so disgusted by what happened in the contemporary section. Part of why I enjoy reading historical romance and time-travel fiction is the typical lack of swearing. I'm just not a fan of it in any book. The author did not mention this in the book's description at the book review site I downloaded it from. If she had, I would have certainly bypassed the book. If you have a higher tolerance of profanity than I, you might get further than I did and enjoy the book.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

What can I say about this book?! It's not my type of book and the story never managed to capture me...

This time travel troupe presents us with a time traveler, from the 21st century to the end of the First World War, where she meets Jacob, a soldier with psychological problems from PST. The two characters fall in love, perhaps too quickly... The story behind this time travel event is never really explained and I feel like what should have been the main thread wasn't there.

I read the book until the end, but it was with some difficulty

PASS.

No doubt this was a sweet romance, but that wasn't what I was looking for.
Everything was too smooth...
I wanted angst or drama that would compel the MCs together, and we'll get to see some really emotional stuff, but nahh, this was just an ok read.

This book was PERFECT. It has everything you could want: history, mystery, gorgeous/manly/protective soldiers, and love. So cheesy, but so unpredictable! Amazing. Love love love. It was twisty at the end, which was a welcome surprise for a romance!

By 10 percent I was so bored I did not want to pick up the book again. To be fair, she time traveled to 1919, a period in which I have no interest. There was nothing wrong with the story or the writing, only that it didn't hold my interest.

I had thought this book would be much better than it was, I was disappointed with it. The storyline had promise - a woman who somehow time travels to her great grandparents’ time. Her grandfather would be dying within the next two years. He had always planned after he became a licensed doctor and established his practice that after a couple of years he could return to Puerto Rico to practice medicine there. However, he dies after two years of being married to Sarah’s grandmother.

Sarah believes if she can get her grandparents together sooner that they can have more time together and also that Ramon could go to Puerto Rico soon rather than treating a patient with Typhoid in Baltimore, which he contracts and dies from.

The author has Sarah spend very little time with her great grandparents at all! She and a soldier, Jacob, Sarah meets at the hospital, plan to have Sarah meet Ramon by pretending to be pregnant and have Ramon be her doctor. I think the author has very little faith in doctors from the past as Ramon barely even examined her. He just took her blood pressure and asked her how she was feeling. There was no examination done of her uterus at all. Even without a sonogram, a doctor back then would have at least put his fingers up her to try to feel what he could! He’d also feel around her stomach externally. Neither of those things were done. Sarah never even undressed!

Also, when Sarah developed a growing green rash, no doctor or nurse noticed it! This time, the nurse had undressed Sarah, cleaned her up and put her into a bed as she’d thrown up and fainted at a deli. The green rash would have been discovered then but somehow no one notices in the book.

The whole side story with Dick Stevens being an ex-soldier after Jacob for revenge was kind of stupid. Especially since it stemmed from him not hearing what Jacob was yelling to him across a battlefield!

And the fact that Dick was Sarah’s great grandmother’s half brother was just a ridiculous thing to do. How coincidental that would have to be for that connection to exist! Especially, since it seemed that Dick was a half sibling from a divorce situation (not a death of one parent) and there were very few divorces in 1919.

This side story of Dick being after Sarah and Jacob for revenge took way too much time away from the actual story which SHOULD have been the whole time travel situation!!!

Sarah never does anything to help her great grandparents except encourage her great grandmother to admit that she likes Ramon and to agree to go out with him if Sarah can arrange it. Well, Sarah never actually arranges it! Ramon asks Helen all on his own, without Sarah even suggesting it, while Sarah is unconscious. That was weird too, Ramon asking Helen out, while in an unconscious patient’s room!!!

The whole green powder thing was ridiculous as well. It was some kind of “residue” from the ghost of Ramon (future dead Ramon) that allows time travel. Because Sarah sniffed that, Ramon was able to send her back in time. That part… while strange, I’ll buy it… but then the author has the green residue turn Sarah’s skin green (and grows over the timeline of the story across her body) and she gets sick - throwing up, getting dizzy, becoming weak, passing out… what was the point of all that? It was totally unnecessary.

There was no time (no pun intended) spent on the original storyline of Sarah trying to figure out why she was there or what she needed to do to get home. There could have been so many other situations where Sarah and Jacob could have met, become friends with and helped her grandparents.

I also didn’t think the time spent with Jacob was enough for them to “fall in love”. He helped her to and from the hospital, bought her food and clothes and got her a hotel room, had her stay a night at his cabin (where she slept with him without getting to know him first). I didn’t think there was enough of anything between them to get them in a romantic relationship or have strong feelings for each other.

Then when Jacob comes to the future, how is he supposed to have a life? He has no identification, no paperwork. They buy a farm (it seems Sarah got a business loan for that, but I can’t see her having enough money, being a writer at a pain management magazine, to qualify for a loan on her own). It would have been more realistic had Sarah been able to stay in the past and live there. It was much easier back then to forge documents for identification.

I think the author has some good ideas with the story, but it needs to be reworked a lot.

Really, really awful book. I skimmed a lot due to the poor writing.

*No-one wants to date the fmc because she's stuck in her job and they'd have to 'carry' her!

*Both of the mcs at some point decide to suddenly yell something in the middle of a conversation - in a public place (people turn and stare).

*Sarah spends less than a week in the past but this long enough for them to fall madly in love.

Spoiler and possible trigger:

Worst of all the villain in this book who is an attempted rapist (possibly has raped other women in the past), all round thug and attempted murderer is the HERO in the next book!! WTAF?!?

Sarah has been given a unique gift – thrown back in time to connect with great grandparents that she never knew. Little did she know that some of her present day soul searching would produce results in the past with James World War I veteran. I really enjoyed the whole scenario of time travel wrapped up in this plot. There is enough introduction to what is going on that I didn’t feel completely confused. As well, they were hints along the way that pointed to the travel not being permanent. I also really enjoyed the little snippet of foreshadowing for the next book. Overall this was a satisfying read with a HEA.

You need to change the past

Sarah is busy putting together a family reunion when everything changes. She wakes in 1919 and outside her great grandfather's hospital. She is afraid of what this alk means. She meets Jacob at the hospital and he offers to help her. But Sarah knows that her time is running out and she needs to change her grandfather's life or else everything is lost. But she knows that leaving Jacob behind will be devastating.
Jacob can't believe that Sarah is part of his life and he knows that they don't have long together but when she disappears he fears that he will fall into madness. Will they find a way to each other? Do they get their happy everafter?
A great love story.

Green is the color of magic.
In this book, you have an older lead character who is trying to bring her whole family together for a reunion so she doing research. Then when a picture falls she falls too right into 1918. In chapter three there is a great set-up for a cool twist and they just keep on coming just wait for the next chapter. This paranormal time-travel fantasy was awesome. I loved Jacob what a great character also how his and Sarah's relationship grew but gang the last few chapters were like icing on a cake with the promises of more to come. This was an excellent book that I highly recommend. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.

The first book in the Spirits Through Time series, by a new Author to me this is her debut story. I know after reading this story I want to read her next book. Sarah Johansson gets sent back in time from 2021 to 1918 where she meets Jacob Bellamy a brooding, wounded infantry corporal. There is suspense, drama, danger, twists, turns, a villain, and love. But Sarah is not meant to stay in the past. The story was well worth reading. I received a copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

It was not a story which I was expecting after reading a plot. In my opinion there are loopholes in the story like more clarification is required, like heroine's purpose for time travelling is not that much great and how she dealt with is not I would consider logical like she was changing her family's history and there were no consequences (good or bad). According to her she did right , OK! but it should change her family's future it should not remain same before her intrusion in the past.

I found this book interesting to read with many Detours along the way

I read several different Back in time books but this 1 was a little bit different. I haven't read about 1 where it's in the United States but it's back in time Because of people that were in the past. The author takes you through this interesting Story. The characters were well written you became to care about each character in the book. The author throws some detours along the way And leaves you with you with 1 person in the well For the next story to take place.

I absolutely loved this book! Although, I will warn you it does have some profanity and a few very steamy scenes in case that’s not your cup of tea, however it is a very enjoyable story!
I wouldn’t hesitate to read this again. It was very well written. Very descriptive without it being too much to want to skim (if that makes sense). It had a great ending but at the same time gave that little cliffhanger for the next book. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for the next book.

So very different

This book is a true original. If you love time travel romance and seek something a bit diff to the usual then this is it.
I enjoyed the characters but, if I had to find fault, maybe a little too much backwards and forwards. In other words, story line tended to waffle on unnecessarily. Some of the ties the characters had to other main characters was a bit strange. Even so I liked it.

WTH? MAKES NO SENSE AND DNF - DO NOT RECOMMEND

There’s really no more to be said. The story is ridiculous and makes no sense. I don’t even no where to start to summarize this hot mess. Again, DNF AT 64% but skimmed and skipped entire chapters.
SEX SCENES - Yes, I only read one before I stopped. It was fine but not at all believable given the events and very short time they’ve known each other.

This is a charming story of a young woman finding herself and, in the process, healing a WW1 veteran. It was interesting to see her efforts to change the past, but would it be wrong? There is a villain, also troubled, who holds a grudge for Jacob.
Jacob has property and money, hard-earned but I couldn't see a way for him to keep it.
Ramon seems content with his lot and perhaps Helen feels his presence as she never married.
This is a lovely story and worth a read.

This is the first book I've read by this author. It was a good start to the series. I don't read a whole lot of time travel stories. I liked the ending but I wish the author would've fleshed out a little more on why the time travel took place and also more about the lives of the main character's grandparents after she time traveled. Did she alter her grandparents history? If so, how much? It was still a good read though.

the writing in this book is atrocious to the point where I can barely read it. its wordy where it shouldn’t be and structured in a way that has 0 flow. on top of all these random words no one uses anymore, using swear words like friggin and darn are super juxtaposed and rlly take you out of the immersion.

i’m clearly not understanding what’s going on and dkn’t rlly care to understand the rest so its a dnf

A time travel romance, invoking the trauma of World War 1 and the struggle to recover. Sarah travels back in time, trying to find her relative, while struggling with life in the early 20th Century. Can she and Jacob find happiness, despite their awkward situation. An authentic approach to depicting the era, which a surprising ending.

It was a unique, fun story. It just felt like there were parts missing that drove me crazy. Twice it sounded like there was a really serious injury but no one noticed and life raced on. I really didn't think it needed the F word thrown in.
