Oh the cover was sexy as it is - but the story pulled me in deep and refused to let me go.

The characters were total fun to be with and the steamy chemistry and banter had me rooting for them all the way. Plus the writing sucked me in deep, the banter, the romance, the confessions of love - ah my heart couldn't get enough of them.

Truly.

Genevieve and Mallon were fated from
a chance encounter on a train. Book based in early 1900s made me think of a gothic collision between past and future. Wuthering Heights feel but sexier. Maybe h was more jaded than I would have liked. But overall story was satisfying. Side characters were interesting.

This is a very sensual and brooding story and with the moors as a background, very compelling! At first I didn't care for Countess Genevieve Rosseline because all she's after is status and will lie and deceive to get it but she quite nicely redeems herself. As for Mallon de Wolfe, he has a lot of trust issues because of what his mother had done and my heart really went out to him. Both main characters are strong willed and I really enjoyed all the interactions between them.

I loved the stories about the moors and I couldn't resist researching on the net about them and seeing pictures of what they look like. I also now want to read The Hounds of Baskerville!!!

Emmanuelle's description of the moors, the superstition and folklore is thorough. I could visualize walking thru the moors, with the mist swirling around me.
Mallon and Genevieve's story was passionate, the lovemaking very descriptive.
I read this in one day, had a hard time putting it down!

This moody, passionate and atmospheric tale brings to mind some of my favorite books such as Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. The moors are the perfect setting for mystery, legend, desire and romance. Master of the Moor has such a realistic feeling to it; you are transported back in time to the days when the desire for power, status and an advantageous marriage were all important. Through in escaped convicts, a ghost or two (?), the fog and mist of the Moors and Christmas season. What's not to love?
Mallon, the new Viscount since his father died, is jaded and lost after year spent in the army and in Constantinople trying to forget his loveless childhood and parents. He returns to his home to make a new start, but struggles to find what that is. Genevieve is a young widow who lost her status when her husband died and she is looking for a new husband who can give her a new title and a place in high society. She sets her sights on the young and impressionable Hugo, Mallon's nephew, but her sensual and passionate nature are hard to rein in. She really desires the confident, worldly and sexy Mallon but they seem to clash whenever they are together. I loved all the plot complications and sexual tension that kept building as secrets are revealed and mysteries unfold. This tale is so hot and romantic that you will melt all over!!

This is different type of historical romance with a strong gothic bent. Genevieve is a widowed comtesse who's gone to Dartmoor to visit the late comte's English side of the family, which happens to be headed by Mallon, the Viscount of Wulverton. Genevieve's original scheme was win over the the late comte's nephew and heir (Hugo) in order to secure a proposal and regain her status as comtesse. Yet upon meeting Mallon her plan is unexpectedly side railed (very interesting circumstances).

There are several side plots, which I won't get into, but the relationship between the H/h takes place amidst the backdrop of the hauntingly beautiful moors. We're treated to some of the local lore and superstitions about fierce hounds with glowing eyes and ghosts of people who were lost and died on the moors.

I've never read a gothic historical romance (except for Jane Eyre) and was pleasantly surprised. I look forward to checking out some more of the author's books.

This was an enthralling story set in the atmospheric landscape of Dartmoor. A place where endless stories were told of ghosts, fairy folk and where the imagination could run riot. Mallon de Wolfe is now the viscount and is returning home after twenty three years away. Genevieve, Countess Rosseline is also making her way to the same house on Dartmoor. They do have an attraction to each other but Genevieve has other schemes in her mind to secure her future. Mallon isn’t one to give his trust easily or to believe in lasting love, given his experience with his parents. I really enjoyed this story of two people who had experienced a troubled childhood but were trying to resolve matters between them. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Fate brought two people together, even before their planned arrival at Wulverton Hall. I found this mysterious romance interesting as there were echoes of Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights in this story. Geneviève has lost her husband at a young age and her husband's nephew is a strong prospect for a future husband. However, when she meets Viscount Wulverton, she finds her whole being singing to a different tune. Amidst stories of piskies, wild dogs, and ghosts on Dartmoor, when creatures rise up in the mist, Geneviève takes fright and has Mallon equally terrified for her safety. As secrets emerge, the mistrust that Mallon has harboured has to be reevaluated before either of them can find peace. The story carries a thread of tension throughout and keeps the reader engrossed. I received a copy of this novel through Booksprout and this is my honest and voluntary review.

Mallon de Wolfe left England as a soldier and has spent the last twenty years abroad. With the death of his cold-hearted father, Mallon is left with the title of Viscount Wolverton and is finally returning to Dartmoor to face the mistakes of his youth and right some of his father’s wrongs. Mistrustful of women after his mother’s abandonment and believing himself to be unfeeling, Mallon is alarmed by the attraction he feels for his sister-in-law’s relation by marriage, the widowed Countess Rosseline, a guest for the Christmas festivities.

Genevieve was left well off by a generous widow’s portion but her low birth means she’s still denied the acceptance she craves in French society. She hopes to secure another husband to gain respectability and marrying Hugo, Mallon’s heir, would serve the purpose nicely and also ensure she could remain at Chateau Rosseline, the only place that has ever felt like home to her. She has no issues working her wiles on young Hugo, but Mallon is determined to protect his inexperienced nephew. In so doing, Mallon and Genevieve struggle against their growing attraction for each other, but their past hurts may prove too much to overcome in securing a happy future.

Man did these two go through some back and forth. Mallon started out extremely bitter towards women, especially those he thought could potentially be unfaithful. He automatically assumed Genevieve would fall into this category and it took him some time to overcome his trust issues. For her part, Genevieve was also preoccupied with being accepted by society, thinking this would bring her happiness, and it took a bit for her to reevaluate her priorities and realize what she really needed, but when she did she was quick to set things right with Mallon. He took more time, but his grand romantic gestures were endearing and these two made a cute, if unlikely, couple. The gothic feel of the moor along with the Christmas setting gave this book a unique vibe, the story flowed well, and I enjoyed it.

Master of the Moor is an absolutely great book. It is the story of Lady Genevieve, who is widowed by the heir to a Viscount. She was never welcomed into society and lived in France for the last years after her husband died. She is asked to come to the estate that belonged his family by his sister. While she is on her travels home, on a train, she shares a room and a bed with a becoming stranger, one she will never see or forget the rest of her life. The present Viscount arrives and she realizes it is the stranger from the train. Having survived the war, he comes home to take on his role as Viscount. His sister and her son Hugo live there as well. Hugo is young and impressionable but not for the fiery, strong willed woman. Genevieve decides to seduce him so she will have a home. When Genevieve sees Lord Mallon, she knows immediately that he is the one she was with on the train. He knows she looks familiar but can't remember where he knows her from. The attraction is strong between them, but he doesn't trust women due to the betrayal of his own mother. Will she give up her pursuit of Hugo? Will he be able to trust Genevieve? Will their love survive the stories and darkness of the Moors? This is a great story of two strong willed people who won't give in for anything less than love. I was given an advanced author release copy of this book!
I of course loved it the first time, and now, for second time I adored this dark romance!!
Mallon has served for King and country of England for years. He returns home, to the beautiful dark and mysterious moors of his home town.
On his way home, he shares a cabin with a beautiful sensual lady. The lighting is bad in their cabin, so he cannot make out clearly her features. They have wonderful and memorable sex.
Once he get's to his stop, he get's off the train, and the mysterious lady is a French widow traveling to the moors to meet he husband's widowed sister and adult son.
Unknowingly to the beautiful Countess Genevieve and Viscount Mallon they were headed to the same destination!
This story is such a page turner, and filled with anticipation, suspense, mystery, and a deep attrction between Lord Mallon and Lady Genevieve! They each have their secrets and demons.
The characters in the story are interesting and add to the story. The story line captures you and makes you wish the story was longer!
Loved how Lady Genevieve is a fighter and has perseverance for the darkly brooding handsome Mallon.
I left out a lot, because this book, this story is so well written and captivating, I loved it and highly recommend it! Thank you Emmanuelle De Maupassant!

After more than twenty years in exile, Mallon de Wolfe—formidable, handsome, and with a shard of ice where his heart should be is returning home to Dartmoor. Mallon has vowed to conquer the betrayals of his youth. Haunted by scandal and the shame of her bloodline, the newly-widowed Genevieve Countess Rosseline is without scruples. She needs a husband capable of securing her status.
The pair first meet on the train from Marseille but a darkened carriage means Mallon doesn’t recognise Genevieve. I enjoyed this extended version of the story I first read in the Seduced Under the Mistletoe anthology. A well written book that drew me in from the start & held my interest all the way through. I really liked Mallon, a strong man who was determined to help his tenants, I struggled to like Genevieve at the start of the book but the more I read the more I came to like her. Both didn’t believe in love but Chrismas time on Dartmoor with myths & legends all adding to the atmosphere plus escaped prisoners & anything could happen
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

All I can say is Wow! What is better than a darkly handsome, brooding hero and his nemesis in the form of a sensual lady whom he can't ignore! The main characters felt very much believable with their faults but I couldn't help but love them and hope they got their HEA. I had trouble putting this book down, kept it handy if only to read "just a few more pages". Great writing and the story just flows so smoothly. No spoilers here, you have to read it for yourselves. If you love gothic settings and mysteries tied into a love story, this is the story for you! Some may find it steamy, but the story lends itself to strong feelings. I loved this book!

Suppressed passions in a gothic setting – dive in and enjoy

With this book, I think Emmanuele has struck a lovely balance between a traditional gothic story of brooding and suppressed passions, two interesting and complex characters, a dramatic setting, and enough engaging and steamy moments to show us the characters’ stories, personalities and personal development. It also captured the “feel” of Dartmoor well, an area I’m pretty familiar with.

This book is a wonderful addition to any reader who loves a great gothic story. The moors, a brooding hero, what more do you need. The twists in this story kept me reading far into the night. I didn't want it to end. Sensual. Fantastic book.

Interesting and intriguing. Wasn’t too sure how I would like the story from the first chapter but I kept on reading and was very glad I did. Genevieve is one of those characters you love to hate till you you know about her. Mallon I just wanted to slap him and say “Wake up and smell the coffee!”.
Two people so alike yet their differences make them compatible if they only learn to trust. I loved Hugo and really wish there could have been more on him and Beatrice. I do believe it’s Hugo who really is the hero because of innocence and nativity since both Mallon and Genevieve are so jaded. Hugo hadn’t learned not to trust and believes people are still good. While his best friend is a rake and scoundrel Hugo believes he can help him be a better person. It’s this innocence that compels Mallon and Genevieve to rethink their future.
The moors are an interesting background and the stories related to them have wishing it was story within a story.
Great story definitely recommend the book and the author. While I received this book for free I felt compelled to make a verified purchase for a true review. In my opinion this was a very wise purchase.

Good stormy weather 3am read. Adding kindle notes soon.

One month, and I've returned to add notes, lol. AND THEY CORRUPTED. So, here are manual thought dumps instead. Sarah, full annotations are on kindle BUT can't be exported (sad face).

Thought process:
- who decided to name someone lord alfred DE WOLFE (lmao)
- the hope for a one bed trope haha
- HOW DIDN'T HE RECOGNISE HER STRAIGHT AWAY MY HEART CANT DEAL NO
- Did it really need to take half the book for him to recognise her, or really her mark anyway

Favourite moments/quotes:
- “You enjoy novels?” He nodded at the volume— a pristine copy of Vanity Fair he knew to be from the shelf of first editions. “When they’re written truthfully.” She levelled her gaze to meet his, composing a serene expression.
- we're all less than perfect, are we not?
- How like a man to blame his own lack of control on a woman’s wiles, as if the desire that had flared between them had been a re- enactment of Adam’s temptation.
- “Such men are not always to be relied upon, and I’d hate to see you lose your head.” She smiled tightly. “Or your heart, to one who might easily come to disregard it.”
- whatever she saw, now, in his face - this shock of recognition - she'd been waiting for it
- I was living a half- life, pretending that I didn’t need anyone, refusing to allow myself to love, for fear of being disappointed.

Relatable moments:
- the past ten had been a shabby excuse for a life
- but the city offered anonymity
- having been mistress of her own household these recent years, there was some strain in being a guest once more, obliged to fit in with others' habits
- no man likes to be made a fool of
- the idea of being controlled, losing all independence, would be unbearable to her
- It was just what he’d wished to avoid, a woman having power over him. Power to hurt him. For what if this moment meant nothing to her, while the hunger burning through his soul for her touch and taste meant everything?

Smut moments:
- her choice had been of impulse, and she'd been able to think of little else since
- that part of her clenching with a hunger over which she'd had no control
- surveying her lips and her neck, and then her lips again
- okay that bathtub scene where she knew he was there the whole time was GOLD
- Geneviève pulled the sash of her dressing gown. As he reached the end of his tirade, she looked him directly in the eyes, letting the two halves of the garment part. As if absentmindedly, she brushed her fingers across the front of her flimsy nightdress. “You think me a whore because I have a mind of my own and refuse to act the virgin; because I desire physical pleasure in the same way as a man.” He faltered into remarkable stillness.
- “I concede that I cannot control every base impulse of my masculinity. However, tonight, I choose to temper those passions rather than being their slave.” She was irked to realize that he’d claimed the last word.
- Mallon’s blood ran hot. He’d teach her what it meant to trifle with a man’s passion. It would take no time to cover the distance between them and tear the delicate gown from her shoulders. If she screamed, he’d smother it with a kiss, but he knew she’d neither scream nor pull away. He’d only to grasp her firmly about those hips, and she’d be his, her warmth about him as he drove full hilt. Even as he fought the urge, she padded barefoot toward him, a look of challenge in her eye.

Mallon, Lord Wolverton had many grudges against women and had never ever considered marriage on account of his mother's desertion of him and his brother, when she left with her lover. Genevieve, the recently widowed countess had also been dumped by her mother and left in an orphanage when very young however she had not given up on love. They meet unexpectedly on a train, have a one night fling and go their separate ways little knowing how they were bound to meet very soon and how their two lives would become entwined. He is aloof, full of his insecurities whilst she is burning with passion and sets no boundaries as to where her sexual exploits lead her. He is one hell of a great character, noble to the core and just wanted to do what he felt was honourable by the many people he felt responsible for. However he felt that he was not worthy of love so he fought all his feelings for Genevieve and berated himself for falling for her ploys whilst she saw his humanity and her respect for him grew daily. This is a very well researched tale full of the customs and the horror stories related to the moors and the people who dwell there, making this such an enriching read. It is an adult story full of love and passion, intrigue and deceit but mainly it is a brilliant romantic novel which leaves the reader wanting to read on!

I fell in love with the Moors as quite a young girl reading The Hound of the Baskervilles. And then many years later, I got to walk the Moors with a friend who made it a point to take me there during one of my visits to England. The book taught me that geography can control the book's tone and atmosphere. The visit there proved to me that I was right.

All that said, this book was SO GOOD. One of the other reviewers called Emmanuelle, The Divine Ms. Em, and that pretty much hits it on the head. This woman writes the best dark gothic steam I've ever read. In this book, she's managed to create a story with the moors as the background and it is oh so good.

Genevieve and Mallon (how I loved that name!!!) are so perfectly suited to this sizzling romance, I can't begin to describe it. You have to read it for yourself. Both have personalities that blend with the Moors, and I don't mean that in a negative way. They just FIT.

Congratulations Emmanuelle, you wrote a wonderful combination of steam, dark, gothic, romance, and hotly coiled personalities and wrapped them up with a bow. I genuinely hope this is Book One of a series, or at the very least, that you decide to use this setting again.

The storyline involves a woman, Genevieve who is returning to England in the hopes of marrying her late husband’s nephew/heir (Hugo) hoping this will make her more acceptable in France when she returns. On her way to England she encounters a man, Mallon (Viscount Wulverton)and they have a brief sexual encounter on a train, neither knowing the other’s identity. Once she arrives at her destination, she realizes that Mallon is the man from the train. Mallon is attracted to her but can’t understand why until later he realizes she is the woman from the train. Genevieve pursues Hugo, who is about as naive as they come which is unusual for a man of his status at that time in history. Mallon fights his attraction to her but eventually gives in. There is a HEA for them but not before others are brought into the story, Silas the escaped convict, Beatrice who loves Hugo and a misunderstanding that almost costs them their HEA. This is an interesting read, great story line and full of drama. I would highly recommend this book.

I missed this books release, but have caught up now, and I enjoyed it immensely.
Emmanuelle like to spice up her romances, never misses the chance to ogle a naked man bathing, lol, and in this story she certainly mixes passion with the erotic, but that's what I expect. There's lots of creepy goings on too, but that's out on the moor, not in the boudoir. I like the twenties setting, Something that this author researches before writing, ( I still don't know what one or two of the things in the book are) and for this tale everything fits together nicely. There's some intrigue, some deceit and lots of misreading of the situation alloyed to jealousy, but that all adds to the story. So, if you like your romances with spice, love a historical setting, this is certainly a read for you. Immensely enjoyable

The moors are a dark and dangerous place, where people often enter and never return. That is what happened to Mallon de Wolfe as a young lad, when his mother left, with her lover, never to be seen again. He renounced his estranged father and joined the military to forget and forge his own way. After his father dies, he leaves the service and on his way home, encounters a lovely woman; without scruples, in his train car. Little does he know that he will have another encounter with her, and perhaps his heart will start to melt. This is the story of two damaged individuals, Mallon and Lady Genevieve, and the realization that life in the moors is not always dark and dangerous.

First let me say that the cover 0f this book perfectly matches how I think Mallon looks. All brooding and wild and delicious. The description of the moor and the tales surrounding the moor (liked Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Hounds of the Baskervilles thrown in) made you feel as if you could taste the fog and get lost in the mist. The story read like an old movie, think The Maltese Falcon, definitely not the same story, but the same feeling. You do not see that in books very much. Great story.

I received a complimentary copy from the author.

A time piece of ages gone by. Set in the moors where superstition and secrets only add to the mystery and legends talked about in hushed voices and feared. You can see the fog and mist as Emmanuelle Maupassant weaves this tale of a family feud and secrets unresolved leaving guilt at the memories in it's wake. The story of Mallon and Genevieve is told in such a way it plays like a movie in your mind, seeing the setting and characters with vivid descriptions and dialogue that just flows. I absolutely loved this.
