Celtic Brooch #11

The Sunstone Brooch

Rate this book
This book contains violence, sexually explicit scenes, and adult language and may be considered offensive to some readers.

From the Badlands to the Bluegrass, this perilous, potentially deadly adventure changes the lives of everyone involved and puts at risk the survival of the Clan and all the Celtic brooches.

While dressing for a dinner date with her cousin George Williams and James Cullen Fraser, Ensley Williams picks through her jewelry box for some bling to add to her outfit and chooses her late mother’s sunstone brooch.

Before pinning it to her jacket, she discovers a clasp that opens the sunstone. Engraved on the inside of the stone is an inscription. When she recites the Celtic words, the brooch heats up until it’s too hot to hold, and she tosses it away as she’s engulfed in a peat-scented fog and transported back to the Dakota Badlands in 1885.

When James Cullen and George arrive to take Ensley to dinner, JC finds a brooch on the floor that’s exactly like eight brooches in his family’s possession. Because Ensley isn’t there, he suspects the sunstone, like the topaz, got too hot to hold once the magic was activated.

For personal reasons, JC decides not to tell his family that he’s going back to rescue Ensley, which is the worst decision he’s ever made. He wears an oven mitt to protect his hand, but the brooch’s heat blasts even through the mitt, and he, too, has to drop it before he’s transported.

Now both JC and Ensley are stranded in 1885. Although confident his family will come to get them, he doesn’t know how long it will take them to figure out where and when he and Ensley landed.

After finding Teddy Roosevelt at Elkhorn Ranch, Ensley’s not in hurry to return to the future. She grew up on a North Dakota ranch near the Theodore Roosevelt National Park, and this is a dream come true. She wants to go on a roundup with TR, while JC wants to go to MacKlenna Farm and “borrow” some gold from his Uncle Braham’s cache

JC makes the second worst decision of his life and leaves Ensley in Roosevelt’s hands, planning to meet her and Roosevelt in three weeks at the train station in Cleveland.

After Elliott discovers what his son has done, he sends two rescue teams back to 1885. Tavis, Austin, and Remy go to the Badlands, while he, Meredith, Emily, Kit, and Cullen go to MacKlenna Farm, believing JC and Ensley will eventually show up there.

While Ensley struggles with bad weather bad food, stampedes, and wild animals, JC goes up against an evil force that plunges him into a crucible of terror and agony and could bring down the entire MacKlenna Clan.

I am a HUGE fan of this phenomenal, time travel/romance series. It combines several of my favorite subjects: the fascinating theory of time travel, history and romance. The level of detail involved in the research of the culture, politics, locations, real-life historical figures and day-to-day life of each time period involved in each individual book is off the charts mind blowing. That detail always makes you feel as if you are right there, seeing what the characters are seeing, feeling and experiencing. After reading one of these books, I always want to "read more about it." If that isn't a testament to making history come alive and far more relevant, I do not know what is. This book was NO exception. Our historical figure who comes alive through Ms. Logan's writing is a young Theodore Roosevelt, during his adventures in the Badlands of North Dakota. That information and story line was fascinating. It is always impressive how much historical research Katherine Lowry Logan must accomplish in order to incorporate and weave real historical figures and historic events into the story lines of her books.

As always, it is a joy to catch up with "family" members from previous books, along with Elliot and Meredith. Having been so fond of their son, John Cullen, from a small boy and watching him grow in each new book, it was a shock to find him a grown man in this book. I love all the characters.

However, there is so much more going on in this wonderful, lengthy book, with complex new characters, along with more puzzle pieces fitting into place regarding the origins and nature of the brooches, I don't want to reveal too much and will refrain to expound further here. This book has to be read, at the pace it was written, in order for it all to come together as it is supposed to. Oh, no, not all is revealed, but some pieces are fit into place.

The entire book keeps moving toward a climatic ending that will answers some of the questions to the history of the Celtic Brooches and opens up more mysteries at the same time. It is an epic, outstanding book in this fantastic series. I thoroughly enjoyed it! Bring on the next book!

If you have read the synopsis of the book, the author warns you: there is violence and raw language in this book, so be prepared.

Once again Katherine Lowry Logan takes us on a roller coaster adventure. I found myself very protective of the next generation and it took time to warm up to the new place people joining in. Ensley is just as much a badass babe as the rest of the women, Paul is loyal to JC and full of surprises. JC? When did he grow up? He is definitely Elliott and Meredith’s kid. He has grown into a wonderful man. I was shocked at what he goes through and hope and pray he comes out ok. I adored getting to know TR. Austin has grown into his O’Grady legacy with easy. That he has them all fooled was a nice twist and as he falls in love, reminded me of Connor and Rick falling for Amber and Penny. Can’t wait to seen what comes next.

Dear Katherine:

I understand it is difficult to write during a pandemic. I skipped pages and pages of gratuitous sex between Austin and Ensley. I “WTF’d!” about the Illuminati, Asia, and Erik. I want to read the rest of the stories to come. I wish you would not be so conspicuous with white privilege, lack of
diversity, and speaking like a YouTube influencer with all the brand names and top shelf everything. I liked that you made reference to current events, even though Covid didn’t make it into the story. I also had a problem with the overuse of time travel. As I won’t be writing books better than yours with all of these strong and beautiful people, I will stop criticizing and tell you I’ve been there since the beginning and I’ll see it through because I really do think this is a future Netflix series. Too bad Sean Connery is deceased and can't play Elliot. I enjoy imagining all the actors who would fill these roles. I dread the adaptation because characters will be omitted or combined. Please heal James Cullen and give us more Tavis, Remy, and Paul. Until the next brooch, I will be waiting to smell peat and see the fog again.

I enjoy these books so much ... interesting characters, complex plots, and lots of historical references. The beginning of this book had me believing that James Cullen had finally found his true love, so I LOVE the plot twist ... always keeps me guessing. There is SO MUCH MORE going on about the brooches than we ever knew ... it is such a JOY unraveling and discovering the details.

While I have loved this series, for reasons stated in many 5 star reviews, I give this book (and series) only 4 stars because it is not made available...not a single copy of any of the books in the series, through the public library apps (based on checking 22 public libraries.)

I listened almost all the installment of this series and enjoyed the retelling of historical events with a twist. This last one though is almost, dare I say, cartoonish. The characters are super heroes and super heroines! There are almost no historical plot. A brief time with T. R. in the Badlands, and again It was more to tell how much of a bad-ass the heroine was.. I kept rolling my eyes!
I finished though hoping for something to happen besides the constant cursing and explicit sex. I am not prude at all but sometimes too much is just too much. It felt like filling the lack of real plot.
I am disappointed.
I was thinking 1 o 2 stars top, but the narration was OK . Also bought this audiobook on sale, and as I said the previous installments were quite good, especially The Oregon Trail, The Civil War, WWII, The T. Jefferson, and the Battle of N. Orleans.
Lastly I Found this book not inclusive.

Thoroughly enjoyed this newest addition to the Celtic Brooch series. The series has been hit and miss for me, overall I have enjoyed it, but some books more than others. I did not like book 9, the Pearl Brooch, because I did not enjoy the Thomas Jefferson elements of the story. This is probably due to a tv program I watched years ago about his relationship with Sally Heming. So I was on the fence about this book, as it was promoted as being about Teddy Roosevelt. I was pleasantly surprised, I thoroughly enjoyed the story of Teddy in the Badlands and look forward to 3 more Teddy oriented books in the years to come. The book comes with a scary warning of violence and sex, I found the violence was very disturbing, and is not for the faint of heart. That said, it is really only a small part of the book.

Wow!

This is an extremely long book, 822 pages, but it is so captivating with all the excitement and adventures it has in it that I didn't want to put it down! You're going to be reintroduced to some of the characters you've previously met, such as James Cullen, Ensley, George - Ensley's cousin, Austin, Meredith and the Keeper, Elliott. While Ensley who is a book editor, is waiting for George to pick her up for dinner, she picks up and starts to pin on her Sunstone brooch, thinking about her meeting with an author who has written a book about Teddy Roosevelt when she learns her publishing house has been published and she no longer has a job. As she places her hand on her brooch and reads the words displayed on it, a smell of peat and a fog surrounds her and she disappears.

My favorite part of the book

The first several books in this series, I really enjoyed. Then, the last several I haven’t enjoyed as much for various reasons. This one was different for me. I think the added supernatural element introduced in the previous book (I think) caught me off guard and seemed to come out of nowhere. Now that I know about it, it added something extra to this book. I also like that we’re getting into the stories of the second generation. I’m finding their characters more enjoyable.

However, there are SO MANY PEOPLE to keep up with. I do appreciate the cast of characters at the beginning but even with that I can keep everyone straight. I’m not sure what the author will do as this family continues to grow.

Always a Treat!

Loving this series and it’s typical of us readers to have a gimme gimme gimme attitude but yeah, I am like show me the next book haha!
I liked Endsley she was a tough cookie, there’s a difference between being tough and riding bulls n horses and being a warrior. That’s the only part I was a bit meh about. The transition of ‘I am coming into the fray’ when there was no real combat experience. Skill set derived from being a child of a bad ass is not automatic, so yeah that part was reaching for me. Thats not just this book though, many authors do this too.
Overall I loved this latest adventure and can’t wait for the next one 🙌

In awe

I am always amazed and in awe of Katherine 's Brooch stories! She is one of the best writers and the adventures are so believable because she bases them on real historical accounts. You can tell she is a great person with a true passion for writing and I will always be a dedicated fan! I cannot wait for the Bloodstone Brooch book to release next!!! Thank you Katherine for the wonderful journeys you take us on! I really liked everything that was discovered in this book about Erik and Travis and Ensley and their connection to the Frasers, it's all complicated and interesting, I love that!

Absolutely Riveting

I LOVE this time travel romance series. I think The Sunstone Brooch is my favorite so far: pulse-pounding adventures back to Teddy Roosevelt's cowboy years, a mysterious viking guardian, evil illuminati that takes it's pound of flesh, and lots of passion. It's fun to follow the clan's growth over the years, to see the next generation stepping up and their stories coming front and center. And Katherine's research and history lesson is fascinating. This is a very long book, and I literally read it through the night. It's a wait for the next book in the series but so worth it!

this book was a whirlwind. i did not understand the pacing all that well. i imagine it must have been difficult to write such story during the pandemic.
also! how the hell does she keep all people and their relationship fresh?! this is the 11th book and there are tons of characters and they all seem to have an inner live you get a peek into in each book.
the romance was a bit rushed in my opinion and the bond building part in this series was all off. it felt very different from the rest of the series.
still a somewhat enjoyable read. i am hopeful for the next book in the series either way.

i want to know what happens next!

I picked up the 1st book in this series Nov 2020 and have devoured the 1st 10 books in 4 months. Just finished book 11. Love the characters and all the storylines. This book alone is filled with Teddy Roosevelt, 12th century Vikings, treasure, torture, soul mates, family history discoveries, and time travel. Love how the author brings back characters from past books in each book as the series progresses, it’s like visiting with old friends again. So happy to read her website to see she has plans for more books in this series. Keep them coming.

Outstanding roller coaster!

I looked forward to this installment in the series and I was not disappointed. I enjoyed seeing the 2nd Gens as adults. I also liked the subtle tilt of power toward them. The love story is amazing! The sexual aspect of a mature relationship was conveyed honestly and tastefully. I cannot say enough about this book. Two of my favorite characters from the series, Austin and Travis were more fully developed and revealed to be strong and powerful men. You will love this book. Don’t miss out!

Another awesome adventure!

I LOVE THIS SERIES! These books offer so much variety to readers that you just can't go wrong! Romance, adventure, history (my favorite), mystery, violence, world travel, time travel, every emotion you can imagine, life lessons, and the value of family and relationships. The time travel is not wacky sci-fy, Alien, body snatching freaky stuff, but the author makes it seem so real and totally possible. Bravo Katherine Lowry Logan on another grand adventure with "The Sunstone Brooch"!

Wonderful series

These books are amazing. The amount of detail in each is astonishing and keeping the characters straight had to be a challenge for the author. I must admit that this one threw me for a loop as to which couple ended up as the soulmates the brooch brought together. My only complaint is the gd's thrown in. I don't remember there being as many in the 1st books, but the last 2 had quite a few amongst other bad words. I absolutely love the family (the whole clan) in this series though and every book is worth the trip back in time.

Excitement Heartache and anticipation

The history of Teddy Roosevelt mixed in with this story was great.
As always the characters were well developed.
I had to put the book down several times just to take control of my emotions!
I hated when my favorite characters got hurt.
But right around the corner KLL meshed the purpose of the story and heartache into the next adventure.
Close to the end of this book I had to slow down my reading.....I did not want it to end.
I look forward to the continuation of the Brooch series!
thank you Kathryn Lowry Logan!!!

AMAZING!!!!!!

This book had the answers to a lot of questions regarding the brooches. I truly enjoyed Ensley and Austins love story and their journey to find each other. As always the characters are authentic and well rounded and the story was masterfully written. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and all the other books in the series.

I will patiently wait for the next in the series amd I know it will definitely be worth the wait! Thanks Katherine for bring so much life to these characters. I see a TV series in the making.

I have been enamored with the “Celtic. Brooch Books” since their debut with the Ruby Brooch. The Sunstone Brooch is the most remarkable to date. The story unfolds with a furious pace that ebbs and flows throughout this adventure. I have used several of these books in their audio form as road companions during long drives, almost running out of gas several times because I was so engrossed. I am happy I was not driving with this one as I surly would have ended up in a ditch. Well done Katherine, my God love and protect you, may your muses continue to inspire you.

Interesting

First off, I loved the story and the whole gang of characters. Second, What I did not like was the constant description of each person 's traits, strengths, physical attributes and sexuality. Who needs it in every chapter? Thirdly, this was almost two stories at the same time. Now we wait. What happens to JC? Paul (How will be as a distant relative for in, will hee get a brooch?), Enseley & Austin's wedding?

ATTENTION Outlander Fans!

If you loved Outlander series by the great Diana Gabaldom (and honestly who wouldn't, right?), you will COMPLETELY love The Brooch series. The aspects of the histories covered, the detail of the time travel adventures, the suspense, the romances, the dang book covers for Pete's sake (!), the complex plots....there is NOTHING not to love! GET. EVERY. ONE!

Wonderful story, so exciting to read!

I can hardly wait for more books in this awesome saga to be published! Almost from the opening sentence of The Ruby Brooch, I have spent most of my waking hours reading these amazing stories! This book was a very interesting story especially the section dealing with Teddy Roosevelt. It will be wonderful to meet him again in the next few books.

There is so much going on, I was on the edge of my chair! plot twists and pathways for more adventures. As always reading this series is a privilage and I love how the characters have felt like family. If your looking for a series that will pull you into its world this is it. Also I have this on Audible and the narration is fabulous.
Sorry I dont do book reviews that recap the book, spoilers suck, and you can get the jist of the book from the back cover blurb!

Exciting, drama, love and a deep sadness

Oh my goodness! I don’t know if I can wait for the next one. This was so good. There were some sad parts, but the story line was soooo good.Katherine was able to capture the personalities each character. The just get better and better. I love the last line of each book. It shows the deep love Elliott has for his clan. He may not show it, but in the end, but deep down there’s real depth to him. If he could just quit being a butt! lol

This series is one of my favorite historical, time travel, romance series. Love it! Each addition to the series has new twists and turns, mystery, danger, and, yes, romance. I enjoy following the links at the end of the book to learn more about the research behind the story. I just finished The Sunstone Brooch and I am so ready for the next.

Who’s Where?

As the families expand and age the first gen can already that the second gen may not be planning to follow the norm! So many plots and so many locations make this rather lengthy (not a criticism) book quite regularly challenge to figure out who is where and when. Great Read *****

Best one yet!

I’ve been so anxious for this book’s release and it did not disappoint. The timing was perfect, too, as it opens in Medora, ND just as I was packing to attend a retreat in Medora. To add to the pleasure, the architects for the Theodore Roosevelt presidential library were in town.
