Do not serve drinks to a dragon mob boss. They bite. Zero stars.
A century ago, rips in reality appeared all around the globe, allowing creatures from myth to surge into our world.
Dragons. Shifters. Fae. Witches.
All now walk the earth in an established hierarchy of power. At the bottom of that chain are mixed-species Mutts... like me. My abilities should be minimal. Yet, after an unfortunate run in with a dragon mob boss, the thirst for my blood quickly becomes his obsession. Violence. Seduction. Bitter betrayal. He will stop at nothing to use me as a pawn in his dark agenda. My only ally is Kreed, a pureblood Zavarian, who will push his own annoyance at being saddled with a Mutt aside if it means bringing down the dragons.
But when someone I trust betrays me, suppressed memories resurface to remind me of how destructive my power can be. No matter how I fight it, a rain of ash and blood is coming. When it stills, will I be the healer of the people... or their destruction?
I'm gonna write one review for the whole trilogy. This was entertaining and had some creativity when it came to our old fav UF creatures. The author does mix up their origins and even rewrites what a "vampire" is. The downside though is that all three of these books suffer from a lot of inconsistencies and pacing issues. There is truly a remarkable amount of plot inconsistencies throughout so I would say this really could use more editing for just that alone.
Nik is a Mutt in a world ruled by dragons, and is dying again. That is until she wakes up to find three days have passed, and a stranger is telling her she has been cured by a species she has previously never heard of. But now she has a protector and a lot of people are coming after her for her unique abilities. If she gets into the wrong hands, it could he detrimental for everyone.
This book! Once I started reading, I was hooked! The plot was so unique, the writing was fantastic, and it held my interest all the way through. Nik's character is strong, but also vulnerable. She has all of these abilities, but doesn't know how to fight. She is spunky, smart and her connection with Kreed is more than physical.
This was am all around phenomenal book, and I am excited for what the series brings.
Brutus might be my new favorite supporting character...I think the phrase giant teddy bear couldn't be more accurate!
This book kicks off a new series in a way that was fun - and fun feels like a funny word to use for a book with some steam and whole lot of action, but it fits.
We get to see the bond between Kreed and Nik begin and grow. Most of the story is told from Nik's POV with a few sections from Kreed's, giving us interesting insight into their minds, thoughts, feelings, and histories making things more interesting without everything needing to be a conversation between characters.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Dragon mafia? Uhm yes please. It was the first story of this kind that I read and I loved every moment of it. I need to know what happens next! Loved all the characters and their development over the book! Highly recommend a read!
This book sets up such an unique world! I love the dynamic between the 2 main characters and I have SO many questions now! That ending has me wanting book 2 now!!
This follows Nik, a Mutt which is a human mixed with a supernatural being, and she is fighting cancer that has returned. She gets healed one evening by a stranger who turns out to be a mythical Varitan or Zavarian(which is between a vampire and an elf) who heal people by drinking their blood. Turns out, it also causes a bond with each other until the one who is ill is healed. So, in the meantime, Nik ends up healing this Varitan’s son Kreed and causes another bond to be created between the two of them, except it’s a bit different between the two of them. Now she has this broody bodyguard following her around until the bond ends between them, and one evening she meets a rogue dragon who happens to taste her blood after basically hypnotizing her and wants more of her. Nik doesn’t understand why this dragon wants her so bad, but she thankfully inherited a bodyguard who will do anything to protect her. Now Nik is trying to figure out why this dragon is after her which triggers events and everyone trying to stop this dragon.
I adore Nik 😍 She’s an emotional person, and is not embarrassed to express emotion, but she’s also super tough, especially when it comes to protecting those she loves. And she may not have physical strength, but she’s got smarts. She’s also spunky and hilarious 😂 The things she says sometimes just had me laughing out loud quite often. She also has the best pet ever, a Chia! Which is supposed to be short for chimera, and Zazu is described as a mix between a chameleon and a bobcat. Sounds freaky and adorable at the same time!
Then there’s the sexy vampire elf Kreed 😍 Oh boy did I adore this hunk of sexiness with all his moody broodiness. He may have been rather over protective, but he’s sweet and has a good heart and cares a lot, especially after he meets Nik and changes as a person becoming a better person. After his people were almost eradicated by the dragons, he made a vow to bring down all dragons, and although that’s his ultimate goal, he still makes sure to protect and care for those he cares about, like Nik. The interaction between the two of them was priceless!
There were some great side characters. Definitely a found family started in this first book and I’m sure it will grow in the next books. Brutus, Lyndee, and Syd are just a few that I loved!
The world is interesting. It’s like our world, but everything is changed after the dragons came and started these mafia groups with dragon leaders, and there’s different mythical people such as Fae, Witches, and a mix called Hybrids. Then there are Mutts like Nik and Pure Humans which are rare which made it interesting.
This was such a great ride! There was a lot of action and a lot of humor, and a hint of a start of a romance. I highly recommend this book! I received a free digital copy from rbntours and the author. All thoughts are my own.
A pleasant surprise! I read the sample and didn't really know what I could expect, but it was soooo worth reading! It gets a well deserved 4.5*!
Worldbuilding: Set in an urban fantasy world where you are Pureblood, human or a halfbreed (a Mutt). Where dragons rule territories and are more like mob bosses than anything else. I found the world very intriguing (I have countless "what if's" going on regularly :D) and it was fun to read. We learned a lot about the power structure, who is important and who isn't and had a good feel for the world. No information dump but learning as we continued It all made sense, the worldbuilding, the scenes and environments, what was going on,... it was really well written.
Character development: When you look at the story you have, of course, our two main characters: Nik and Kreed, and then Brutus (yes yes, and Zazu, we really can't forget about him!). Brutus is like a giant teddy bear, looking ferocious but has a big heart. Kreed is the brooding, good looking but cold counter to Nik's cautious (or absolutely not) and flammable self. The characters grow throughout the story, not only towards each other but also in themselves. Being with others changes them (in a good way) while still being true to themselves. I loved it! Nik isn't a damsel in distress, though she welcomes the help Kreed and Brutus can give her. They feel real and believable, even the side characters. While we don't know that much yet about the "bad guy" (except that he's an evil bastard), we know enough to root for team Nik!
Pacing & flow: The book had me in its clutches from the get-go :D The pacing was great, never too slow or too much but with some time between so you could catch your breath.
The book: The book itself was well written with no (noticeable) errors. It is 326 pages long, spread over 21 chapters and told from Nik's point of view.
Final thoughts: I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book (courtesy of the author and Booksirens) and as I already said, it was a very pleasant surprise! The book and characters felt well fleshed out and the author put a lot of thought into it. It had me hooked in no time :D I'm very much looking forward to book nr 2. Recommended!
“loved this camera! If it came down to the camera or my life, I’d choose life, but I would whine about it.”
#Urban Fantasy #Unique world-building #Action-packed
The world is a mixture of technology with supernatural creatures and their hybrids or mutts.Hybrids are mixes of different supernaturals. Mutts are mixes of humans and supernaturals. To be honest, I would prefer if they were aliens. The supes are not what you would expect: elves that drink blood, dragons that drink blood or power…there is a theme here, and I want Elves to be more true-to-form. The Elves are actually more like a red cap or other frightening fairy, for example.
Each city may be ruled by a dragon, but gangs rule the streets. Absolutely grunge-cool!
You have to ignore some world inconsistencies, like science. The first chapter also threw me. Nic’s, the MC, photography and cancer are minor elements of the story. However, she is a survivor and a remarkable spy. Nik’s main job in a city ruled by a dragon is to identify the capabilities of each creature she meets, and her ex-boyfriend directs her to the people she needs to identify.
The powers everyone shows are only loosely defined, and Nik’s powers confused me. However, in healing an Elf and his son, she somehow gets tied to the son, Kreed, an assassin. Their bond grows throughout the story, and so does my confusion over whether the love is really just the bond’s side effects.
I was afraid there would be no plot twists, that the love is set, the opposition is set, blah blah, blah. Jus when I started getting bored, the action and plot twists started falling like pixie dust, and the end was….depressingly entertaining.
If you read this as a one-off, don’t expect an HEA. However, this is the start of a series, and it leaves me aching to read more.
🪴This is a honest review. I received this book for a tour review. Thank you @rbn_tours and @leya_grayce for sending me the ebook.
🪴All my opinions are my own.

🪴Review: I give this book 5 stars.
🪴I loved this book. It’s a quick read in a world were Nik just heard she is sick again, and goes to do something stupid. And becomes entangled with Kreed who is determined to protect her. All just because they have a bond of what Nik. The story has a good pace and you never get bored. You just want to keep reading and learn more about Nik and her powers. And don’t forget Brutes out lovely teddy bear. And the ending of this book just makes you want to know what is going to happen next.
Ashes of Blood paints a very vivid image of a whole new universe, a creative depiction of a dystopian era in which mystical creatures come to life. It is a very fast-paced novel making it a smooth and easy-to-read book as you get hooked learning the intricacies and details put into describing the wildlife and new ways of life. It is set in the first-person perspective and is full of beautiful illustrations, relatable humour, and targeted at teenagers who dream of being the chosen one. It features the classic cliche of an overprotective male saving the damsel in distress, making it a fun twist of a familiar storyline that focuses on physical attraction slowly blending out into an emotional connection that would be near impossible to break. The downside of this is the way the love interest is portrayed is slightly unhealthy and the damsel in distress scenario reinforces gender roles. It states that males must always be the stronger ones saving 'weak' females when the females were doing fine by themselves. Younger readers may see these gender roles and examples of a relationship and accept it as the way they should be treated, leading to potentially abusive/possessive relationships. Nik views danger as sexy and hot, and every other female character refers to his predatory gaze and actions as attractive, which gives them a bit of a shallower personality as, in the real world, perception of men would differ between every individual.
Nik is a Mutt, which means she is part shifter, part human. In her world, there are different species including shifters, the fae, witches, and dragons...Mutts are pretty much at the bottom and the dragons are in charge. After a chance encounter gone-wrong with a dragon mob boss, she is now being hunted.
This book started quickly and there was non-stop action. I like how sassy Nik is, and I would’ve liked to know even more about her back story. Likewise with the bond between Nik and Kreed - there’s some spice in this book and I liked their chemistry 🔥, but I wanted to better understand why they were bonded and what it means.
World building is one of my favourite parts of fantasy, and I think the world in this book was interesting and I loved that there were so many different supernatural species but i would have enjoyed it fleshed out even more. I want to know more about Kreed, the inter-species politics, and abilities of different species. This is the first book in the series though, so I’m sure there will be more details to come!
Overall this is a past paced and fun fantasy read! No spoilers! But boy the ending was a cliffhanger and I’m curious to see what happens next!
✨Thank you to Booksirens and Lela Grayce for a free copy of the ebook, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.✨
Promising start to a series but be warned there is a huge cliffy coming your way but dont let that put you off. Nik is a great character with lots of sassy back chatting so my favourite kind. Some time ago there was a rip in space and dragons came through and now rule. At the same time witches, fae, shifters and other supernaturals appeared. Nik is a mutt which is what your are called if you are part human and part supernatural. Being a mutt is worse than being human and she is bottom of the hierarchy. What is she though? I can’t wait to find out but reading you will have some suspicions. The other characters are all great too and through healing she has bonded with Kreed who is a Zavarian Prince and moody as all hell. I can tell I’m going to love him. My favourite is her pet Zazu, a creature called a Chia and described as cross between a bobcat and a chameleon. He is super cute, super scary and super loyal to Nik. Honestly the characters are all great and the new supernatural beings are a breath of fresh-air as unique from the usual suspects which btw I still love. I am really looking forward to continuing with this series and seeing where this goes and another great point is this is not predictable so you are kept guessing. I received an advanced reader copy from Voracious Readers in return for an honest review. 4/5 stars from me.
There are several things I really enjoyed about this book. The farther along I got, the more I liked the storyline and the characters. The story just kept getting better and better. I would even use the term "smoldering" for some sections. I thoroughly enjoyed the sarcastic, down to earth, whiny characters. There was a section that depicted how we sometimes take "the earth" for granted. The character, Nik, spends time looking at photos of extinct animals and is in awe - and these are animals we currently take for granted. Made me realize that I wish cameras were around during the dinosaur age! The caste system for mysticals was also interesting in its reflection of our own society that has its own way of stereotyping people and races. The author's resulting social commentary regarding invading countries who shun resulting offspring was quite accurate. I also chuckled aloud several times, e.g., a story about bras. The story also demonstrated how powerful an emotion vengeance is as it drives behaviors that contradict who a person is or wants to be. The story ended with a great cliffhanger! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This is so much different from what I expected! I was taken aback and had to process everything that had happened on this book at the beginning because there were so much information and details about the world and the creatures living in it. Kinda confuse at first, but it got cleared half-way.
The emotions and connections every character to each other added spice and sweetness and a little bit of sadness to their story too especially Nik as she described her past relationship with Gavin. I just know that there is something more between Nik and Kreed. Take note that Gavin is the past and just a friend now but reading Nik's experiences made me realize how strong and mature they are when they decided to end them. While Kreed is very interesting here and just love the determination of him to keep Nik safe.
Excited for the third book because I can't help but read more of them, its a page turner and I couldn't seem to put the book down when I read it. I recommend if you need a fantasy/action read!
Fast paced, action packed Ashes of Blood is just as the title suggests. A mafia based PNR with a nice slow burn. We get as far as a couple make out sessions.
Its not the first book I've come across where the top of the food chain contains dragons, and the mixture of fae, witches and shifters below. But the concept of mafia gangs, and in particular mutts gives this a refreshing twist. I thought this would be a dudd when I read a couple grammar mistakes on the first page, but was quickly drawn in. The 200 pages were gone in next to no time. It was just too short! I needed more. I wish some authors didnt split the books up so short, but I understand a reader's concern with investing in a long book that might not deliver.
The characters contained in this book were really well written and laugh out funny in places. I want a cute but ugly reptilian cat now.. Anyone know where I can get a Zazu in my life?
I was gifted this book by the author via Voracious Readers Only for the pleasure of reading and leaving an honest review should I chose to.
Dragons, Shifters, Fae, Witches! Oh my! This is one soup of supes that you'd want to hide away from. The spectacular world building gives us a memorable magical atmosphere that is intriguingly intense!
Nik is likable and relatable and tons of fun! She's the besties you need in your corner. Her inner musings are fantastically quirky and addictive.
Kreed is delightfully delicious and rocking that total broody male vibe. He's got secrets and darkness locked within his gaze. The bond that is created between he and Nik is quite interesting and I can't wait to see their relationship develop into more.
Wow!! This is one unputdownable book! The pages quickly raced by once chapter one hit. This is loaded with humorous moments and those that make you grip this harder. One-click this beautiful book today!! Lela Grayce is full of surprises.
It was a fun and interesting book for me. I had some problems with the plot. Parts of it felt like they were written in rush while others had the perfect build up. Some chapters seemed like they were written by a different person completely and i spotted some vocabulary mistakes, mostly with some pronouns. To the good part now: The sexual tension is there. Like... There there. I could feel ot oozed out of the pages. I loved how feisty and goofy Niki was despite her illness and all that is happening to her. Ok, she has some serious trust issues -she trusts way too fast and completely strangers- and Kreed has some serious problems regarding objectifying people but it's a light read. Those thing are enjoyable in this kind of literature and personally favorite of mine. It left me with my mouth gaping and ready for some more.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. So much so that I read it all in one sitting, even though I was suppose to be doing other things. I was invested in Nik immediately and loved the way her character was written and the humour that was thrown in throughout the text. The other characters were also very well done, especially Brutus and Kreed. The writing style and quick pace was exactly what I needed as a reader and I found myself more and more intrigued about what would happen next. Personally I'm not a fan of how it just ended, I mean there are cliff hangers and there are cliff hangers. But I guess the strong surge of emotion I felt when I read the final page shows how much I enjoyed reading the book and wanted the story to continue and an easy fix for that is to read book 2. I received a free copy of this book from Voracious Readers in exchange for an honest review.
Not going to lie, this started off really slow for me. I felt like I was tossed into a world I didn't understand, like I was thrown into the 2nd or 3rd book. HOWEVER, once I began to understand, I got sucked in! It was incredible. It has this amazing magic/ hierarchy that was...honestly, it's not the best you're ever going to read. But it was ~good~.
The MC wasn't completely useless, which I loved. She wasn't extremely overpowered, she had a good amount of power and it was refreshing. It was a nice change of pace.
The love interest had a little bit too much over protectiveness for my taste, but he was still swoon worthy. Don't get me wrong. He was great. Just not my cup of tea.
I think this would be a great for fans of Kate Daniels and Mercy Thompson.
A supernatural adventure with attitude! I loved Nik's call-it-as-she-sees-it mouth and spitfire personality, but soft, gooey center. She holds her own and her tension with the mysterious but alluring Kreed was very satisfying. I found the mafia theme a little subdued compared to mainstream connotations of "mafia" but enjoyed Grayce's interpretation and am happy it didn't overpower or weigh down the story. Overall, the mystery and action of the story kept my attention and the characters were endearing and pulled me into their story. Nik's history still holds lots of questions and I look forward to more answers in the next book! A fun, adventure filled urban fantasy that'll leave you pumped up and yearning for your own personal Zavarian!
I voluntarily reviewed a copy of "ASHES OF BLOOD" This is quite the adventure so full of violence, suspense, betrayal, secrets, darkness, magic, hierarchy, top food chain DRAGON'S, WITCHES, SHIFTERS, FAE, MUTT the lowest. Nik is a Mutt have human/Supernatural she has a few gifts she gets bitten by Varitan still healing she saves Kreeds life he's in her debt but Lazateth is new Mob Boss he's got Nik in his sites can Kreed save her from the Dragon. I was totally interested in the bond between Nik & Kreed can't wait to see how their relationship develops this a must have book you don't want to miss it won't disappoint I'm so looking forward to book two in this series the Dragon Mafia Cronicles "ASH OF FLAME"
This book was phenomenal! There was so much mystery surrounding Nik, the fmc. She was hilarious and spunky, but also very real and emotional at times. I loved the depths of her personality and character. Brutus and Zazu are hands down the best side characters. One is a big teddy bear shifter and the other a "so ugly its cute" pet. They bring Nik balance. I'm super intrigued by Kreed and the weird bond with him and Nik. There's a lot going on there, and no major answers this go around. The mystery and action as the book came to a close got really crazy and the ending left me holding my breath. This story is a must read , and I truly can't wait for the sequel!
2.5 stars to be exact. I'm not sure if I liked this one or not. The story is okay, a bit too fast paced for my likings but it introduces us to an interesting world. I didn't like how it started with an info dump about the main character, I'd much preferred it if we got to know her through more scenes to add some depth. Because it came out as too blank to me. I also didn't like the protagonist, honestly she ruined it for me. She was just a brat most of the time and way too easy to convince (her self sarcasm didn't help.) And can anyone please tell why is there sexual tension with at least three males in the story??
Wow... I just finished Ashes of Blood and I loved every minute of it. I immediately went to see when Book 2 was coming out, yeah, that was a bummer. July 2021...
Nik, Kreed... the heat, the cold, the connection.
Dragons, Mutts, Humans, Hybrids, and more. This book has it all, the story is fresh, the characters relatable. This book will take your mind and heart on an adventure, you won't know where you land till the end.
I suggest you give yourself a day to read this, because you won't want to stop once you start.
I was given this book for free, but I am voluntarily giving my honest review.
I received a free copy of this books as a member of VoraciousReadersOnly in return for an honest review.
I love shifter/paranormal books and this one was a new and interesting take on the genre. It sets up both the character and worlds well. The book went by quickly with a good, action filled pace. The tension between the two main characters was growing and I am interested in how the author will reveal a few of the secrets that we are learning about them. The cliffhanger ending was really good, but also very abrupt. Now excuse me while I get the second book and third books! * Cross reviewed on Amazon, Goodreads and BookBub.
YOOOO the synopsis was not kidding when it said this was for fans for Maas' books.
I loved it! There's something about these wholly fictional worlds with fantastical creatures that make me swoon and gawk all at the same time lol.
If you liked Maas' most recent book, *House of Earth and Blood*, I'm thinking you'll like this one too. The setting is pretty familiar. And the leads are also just as cool as Bryce and Hunt :))
My thanks to Lela Grayce and Voracious Readers for sending me a copy of this book! I really hope my local library buys the second book soon...I really need to get my hands on a copy T u T
What a cliff hanger! I have so many questions about Nik and Kreed budding relationship. Lazateth is not a nice dragon - bit of a doucebag. He needs to be taken down. I love Zazu- what a unique pet/friend/ protector. He is adorable funny. Lots of action and a surprising twist at the end. Lynden, Brutus and Sydney are some great friends too. Love the banter between them. My favorite quote from this book is : I don’t fart, I whisper in my panties. Love it. Great job Lela with this book! I can not wait for the next one.
I’m not going to lie, I was on the fence about this one at first because I am not a big consumer of Mafia themed books, but when I read that it was a DRAGON Mafia I was hooked in. Let me tell you, Lela Grayce did not disappoint. The start was a little slow but once it picked up, I caught the “just one more chapter” bug and was up way past bed time reading! Nik is a fantastic FMC and I would absolutely be remiss if I did not mention the walking sexy beast of a contradiction, Kreed. Their interactions are amazing. *chefs kiss* I can't wait to read the rest of this series!
