WHAT HAPPENS WHEN AN INNOCENT PRANK GOES HORRIBLY WRONG?

Natasha, Riya, Anjali and Katherine were best friends in college—each different from the other yet inseparable—until that night.

It was the night that began with a bottle of whisky and a game of Ouija but ended with the death of Sania, their unlikeable hostel mate. The friends had vowed never to discuss that fateful night, a pact that kept their friendship and guilt dormant for the last twenty years.

But now, someone has begun to mess with them, threatening to reveal the truth that only Sania knew. Is it a hacker playing on their guilt, or has Sania’s ghost really returned to avenge her death?

As the faceless enemy closes in on them, the friends come together once again to recount what really happened that night. But when the story is retold by each of them, the pieces don’t match. Because none of them is telling the whole truth . . .

That Night is a dark, twisted tale of friendship and betrayal that draws you in and confounds you at every turn.

Four college friends. An innocent Ouija prank. But the victim winds up dead the next morning.

I had the entire week off for Christmas, but yesterday was the first time I had the house all to myself for a few hours so I loaded about 12,000 cookies onto a plate and settled in for this sure-to-be winner. I mean the premise said it all: Four college friends. An innocent Ouija prank. But the victim winds up dead the next morning. That sounds right up my alley. I’m going to go ahead and blame the majority of this ending up a flop for me as a literal “lost in translation” experience. The writing was soooooo clunky and the dialogue was absolutely painful. Unfortunately, this is a rare occasion where I think it would have worked better as a short story too because even at 263 pages there was not enough plot to carry it through (a hacker is threatening a group of friends with an “I Know What You Did Last Summer” from 20 years ago) and the progression moved at a snail’s pace.

Four friends, twenty years and one haunting secret. It was an innocent game of Ouija with a bottle of whiskey and a prank in mind but one of the hostel mate end up dead in the next morning. What exactly happened in that cold fateful night of December. The friends vowed to never discuss it again. But now after two decades someone summoning the dead from the closet. A frozen story is again replayed and a hacker is playing with their guilt, keeping a feet on their fraying nerves. Is it really a hacker or has Sania's ghost returned to avenge her death?

That Night is a thriller suspense novel. The story starring four friends Natasha, Riya, Anjali and Katherine starts with characters narrating their present life & reminiscing about their past. Surely they are the part of the haunting secret of their hostel mates mysterious death & this gult is somewhat embedded into the dark corner of their hearts. Everyone has moved onto their life & the time gap has weakened the friendship until a hacker comes into their life to jeopardize their world.

I'm very much impressed with the theme & the storyline of this book. Actually I wasn't aware of the fact that I was searching for something like this until the moment I started reading this book. The storyline is filled with anticipation and curiosity. I was no less than a detective myself while reading this book.

On top of everything, this book has some good character sketches. Like I can clearly visualise the characters in their teens & college days & the change after twenty years. I was completely hooked to this book and my curiosity was at its peak.

Writing style is amazing but at some places I felt it's draggy and monotonous. I was getting confused & distracted because of the multiple POVs & change of narration. But kudos to the author for coming up with this amazing idea to write this book & I'm glad I enjoyed this slow burn story.

Rarely do I come across novels that engage me in a way that they become totally unputdownable. I have always been a huge devorer of psychological thrillers with a pinch of horror intact and when I come across this novel everywhere be it offline stores and online shops, I couldn't hold me back to start with it and oh man! It quenched my thirst for my favourite genre like no other.

Sania was someone who wasn't liked by many especially the group of four friends namely Natasha ,Riya , Anjali And Katherine who loathed her a lot. It has been two decades since that fateful night which was expected to be an adventurous enjoyable one but ultimately ended on a very horrifying note with the demise of Sania. All these years they resolved firmly not to discuss that event but now someone is messing around with them to unravel all the happenings of that night. They are not very sure whether its her ghost or someone else who is playing tricks. They finally decide to recount the incidents though unwillingly but each of them is telling different story as no one is actually revealing the truth.
Who is the culprit ? Grab the book to find out.

The novel is an outstandingly written and intricately crafted piece of work. It moves at a rapid pace and makes you wonder and amaze at every turn. The blurb is one of the best I have come across for any book of any genre. It raises the appetite in reader's mind to pick the novel readily. The tale is wriiten in a way that one keeps anticipating the next twist .The addition of games like Ouija gives it even more classical fearful touch. The cover has an eerie vibe to it as well. The climax and unfolding of events is crafted in that fashion many wouldn't have expected to counter. The touch of shades of grey in all the characters is very creatively woven and presented

Overall a magnificent work of fiction.

The story follows four friends Riya, Natasha, Katherine, and Anjali from their hostel days at Institute of Technology Kurukshetra to their adult lives twenty years later, across four different countries.
They can't be more different from each other but a single night haunts all four. This fateful night has not been discussed for the past two decades, but now there's a third party threatening to spill all the beans that happened all those years ago.
Ironically, this faceless enemy manages to bring the estranged friends together to solve a mystery that involves their family and loved ones.

It is a tale of love, life, friendship, betrayal, and revenge. I thoroughly enjoyed this read. There are so many plots and sub-plots, it will keep you on your seat's edge. I finished reading this in one night and the writing style is pretty simple, but what is amazing is how the author handles multiple narrators with finesse.

Pick up this read if you want to enjoy a good mystery thriller, with a dash of the paranormal. All the ouija board fanatics, I'm sure you'll enjoy this read.

This was okay. There were numerous issues with the English, but it’s hard to tell which errors were real errors and which were just differences in usage. Something to be aware of going into it because it did take me out of the story multiple times.

I enjoyed the plot overall - an event that these 4 women have kept secret coming back to haunt them. I thought each woman was made to be pretty distinct from the others. But it got a bit repetitive (the constant hacking) and slow in the middle. And the ending felt odd. It has a silly “let me explain everything now” moment, and it felt like a bunch of rushed revelations happened all at the end.

Four girls, huddled together on a wintery, moonless night playing a terrific prank on a roommate summoning the Dead via Ouija board. Lots of booze involved, could this night get any worse? It would indeed, because when the sun comes out next morning, one of the girls will be dead, lying in the woods, her body already half eaten by predators.

What really happened that night?

Twenty years later, the four girls now grown up and successfully created carefully curated lives, never talk to each other, especially about that scary night. But it is always there, that tingling thought, right when they close their eye lids for a minute. Haunting them still, atoning to their sins 20 years now.

Sania Is now dead. And someone out there really wants the truth to come out.

Could there be a hacker at play? Or is it the ghost of Sania speaking to them, haunting them until she gets get revenge? The lives are crumbling and the women are losing it slowly, falling to their knees, and bracing for the final impact. The worst is yet to come!

Stunning delivery by the debutant Nidhi Upadhyay as she spins a nail-biting, chilling thriller with tints of paranormal elements making the plot dark and tight and completely scary. You'll have to race through the chapters and only when you have read the final word of the final chapter, would you be convinced enough and by then you'll realise you're holding your breath for too long and finally inhale fresh air into your lungs. Well, that's how it feels like.

The women are spoilt, even in their teens with their booze and pranks and when they grow up, they're just ready to make it all disappear and stay safe, stay happy and selfish because what matters to them is their own lives and nothing else. The characters are completely unreliable as you'll discover lies, betrayals and layers and layers of guilt buried underneath the tangled web of mess created by the friends.

This is a thrilling woman's fiction that spins around friendships, boy crush, betrayals, domestic abuse, alcoholism, anxiety, suicide and finally redemption. An Un-put-down-able page turner!

That Night by Nidhi Upadhyay is a darkly haunting and compelling tale of friendship, deception, secrets and revenge. It follows four girls Anjali, Riya, Natasha and Katherine whose lives changes on one fateful night which kicks off with an innocuous prank of Ouija game and ending with the death of Sania. Whatever happened that night was vowed to be never ever divulge again by the quartet. However, after twenty years something or someone has begun to unravel their buried past, stirring their long established cemented lies into motion.

Secrets have a tendency to hold the bearer a hostage of constant fear. Same thing happens to these four and this time, they are not privileged of choosing to show the partial truth. A mysterious assailant has begin to terrorize the secret keepers and won't stop until they come face to face with their demons.

Who was this person? Was it a devious work of a cyber bully or has the ghost of Sania finally come back from the dead seeking nothing but the truth?

I devoured "That Night." It was brilliantly twisty, spellbinding and suspenseful. What I loved about the plot is you don't get all the facts at once but as you delve deeper, they become more stronger and at times intuitive but at the same time the mystery element is something that has been liberally explored and I was immediately drawn into this intense, atmospheric thriller as there were so many unexpected revelations that kept me reading into the night. Told in alternative sections of Anjali's, Katherine's, Natasha's and Riya's voices, it further intensified into an remarkable and neat plot development. There were a lot of other dynamics that were in play along with main theme such as family issues, personal dilemmas and more, making it all the more interesting.

Readers who enjoy gripping and visceral portrait of a deeply satisfying plot are in for a real treat. I am not going to lie, it was an absolutely addicted with this. Riveting characters who although belonged to the same clique, carried different personalities altogether. Each one of them had a distinctive voice and fine tuning it with chilling details made this book stand out, every time there was a tiny detail revealed to us, it rotated and gave way to an avalanche of theories.

Buckle up for an utterly magnificent and edge of your seat thriller of 2021.

One cold wintry night. A nearly-deserted girls’ hostel. Four friends huddled around a lone lighted candle. And a visit from the other-world!

From here the writer takes the reader off on an accelerated journey of love, friendship, guilt and death… woven around the realms of the numbing paranormal. But if you thought it is just a tale of abandoned houses, creaking doors, whispers and wails, cobwebs and decay, you are in for a surprise! ‘That Night’ is a terrifying paranormal story that is modern, sleek, sophisticated and smart as a whip! And fitted snugly into the paranormal is a chilling ‘whodunit’ that keeps the reader on tenterhooks!

The language is lucid, yet intense; the presentation sleek yet chillingly terrifying; the characters lovable, yet at times sinister.

The story jet sets between cities around the world. It builds up a nostalgia of one’s college years. It ignites the agony and happiness of one’s first crush. It touches on love, sacrifice, societal acceptance and death. It creates the women-of-age one who are immensely accomplished, yet have their world caving in for a macabre past, that should best lie buried.

Yet the past comes alive, to haunt them and gnaw at their conscience. An attempt at a closure brings the friends on a whirlwind journey that tosses the reader to dizzying heights, leaving her breathless and terrified.

A powerful piece of writing, so mature that it is hard to believe that it’s a debut novel!
The writer weaves her spell so profoundly that the reader’s mind wavers back to it, time and again, even in the midst of a busy schedule.

There is no peace till you read the last word and there is no respite from the rush of adrenaline that holds you in its grip, right from the start!

This is a truly horror and thriller story which you won't be able to put down once you start it.😯 I was thrilled and eager to know the secret which was revealed at the very last chapter.🔚

It involves four friends, Anjali, Natasha, Riya and Katherine 👭👭 who played an innocent prank on her neighbour, Sania, in their hostel and now, after twenty years, they are being harassed by an unknown hacker or by the dead girl herself.😰 All four of them live miles away from each other in Mumbai, New York, Singapore and London.🏠 They haven't made contact in twenty years but now, they all have to come together🤝 in order to make themselves free from this unknown trouble.🙄 They are all hiding some secret guilt all these years.🧐 They are sure that all this is done by a strong hacker 👨🏻‍💻 who can hack their all electronic devices and their home equipments. But they also doubt about some paranormal thing ☠️ involved when their guilt took over them. The ending unveiled all the past secrets and some bitter truths about them and other people involved.🤯

This story was truly an enjoyable ride🎢 for me as I love this genre.🤩 It also shows how our Indian society has still not been able to accept homosexuality and how people suffer and end their lives because of that.😔

This book will make your mind work🤔 and try to find the culprit behind all the trouble.🤨 The characters are very well developed.👌 The language is lucid. It's recommended to all readers who like thriller and horror rides.😊

Long-long ago, during an Inorganic Chemistry class, a question had come up.
What is the strongest acid?
Professor had explained the Hammett Acidity Function which is used to measure the strength of various acids. He had also stated that among the naturally occurring stuff, Sulfuric Acid is the strongest. To achieve more corrosive strength, one has to fuse two or more acids to create superacids— which is done in many industries.
In the past three decades I have moved away from all those lessons to a point where life feels more like time spent in a Mechanical workshop with endless repeats and useless products covering everything as a result. But, in the process, I have learnt that there are stronger acids within us than those available in bottles.
Fear.
Guilt.
And when you bring those two together, you have stuff like Fluoroantimonic Acid— a genuine superacid!
This novel, with its recognisable characters drawn in bold strokes, is all about that particular combination, and its effects on the characters across time and space.
It begins like a gothic thriller. Then it turns into a mystery. But all the while we see visible etchings being drawn on the glassy surface of the four protagonists, by their hidden antagonist(s).
Truth emerges like a baby, after an intensely painful process, where all four women and those touching their lives realise the meaning of a very legal expression~ causes and consequences.
And you know what? In the process they learn more about themselves, learns how to grow up afresh.
Also, finally there's a closure and some sort of redemption. The ending made me realise, the etchings, despite being very real, had left them with some stains that allowed them to come clean metaphorically. Perhaps that's why they claim, "daag achchhe hain!"
One star dropped due to rather unnecessary padding in the middle and a shocking lack of illustrations. Otherwise, recommended to all lovers of mystery.

"Hiding something on purpose is just the same as lying, people around you deserve to know the truth" ~ That night

☠️Natasha, Riya, Anjali and Katherine are best of friends living in the same hostel, each one was different from other but indivisible.
They were leading their lives differently but after 20 years of their separation, their common past haunted them as hell.
Sania, one of their classmates, who the four them really hate and she didn't like them either. They played a prank on her one night with Ouija board which itself is very haunting.

☠️As soon as the plan got creepy, they all backed out including Sania but the next morning Sania found out as dead. And they all blamed themselves for her death.
In present day after 20 years, they were being haunted by the modernization paranormal activities( I was getting goosebumps while reading it), their mobile phones and laptops were hacked and somebody had tricked them very badly so that they feel guilty about that night.
To find out who was behind all this, these four brave girls came together again after long 20 years who were dispersed like the beads of the broken chain.

☠️But who was the person behind it all this? Sania herself?
You need to read it and find out by yourself.
This is the best thriller mystery book, I've ever came across. When you pick up this book you'll be glued to it till the end. Must give it a try. These two words( THAT NIGHT), kept me on the edge of the bed😨
Language is very simple and best recommended for the beginners.

And huge round of applause for the author, it's her debut novel and she has done a great job in writing this gripping story. Hope to see more works by you 🙌

I had high hopes, given the premise. Unfortunately, I had a hard time enjoying my read. Firstly, I couldn't quite settle with the narration - too many figurative speeches and "styling", if you will. The fact that the story is told through four POV characters didn't help either.

Credits to the author for creating four voices, but I have to say... I found it hard transitioning from one POV to another because there wasn't much distinction between them, in my opinion.

The story revolves around a dark past, with supernatural forces believed to be at play. But the bulk of the book seemed to be focusing on the characters making theories about the perpetrator. And these are further weighed down by multiple phone conversations, etc. Personally, I could not feel the suspense or fear. Having said that, I was curious to find out the identity of the perpetrator threatening the four characters.

Aspiring authors, this is actually a good book to read and study. Those things I've said aside, the author offers good vocabulary, character ideas and potential plot twists. My issue was, as a reader, I couldn't thoroughly enjoy it due to execution.

At half past 12(percent) I lost all my interest and it started to bore me out.

Well, I quite regretted to think that it will be a twisty, spooky thriller, perfect for wintery time.

It is the kind of book, you can read the first chapter and then directly jump to last chapter and that's it. No need to bore yourself out in the middle.

Four best friends Natasha, Riya, Anjali, Katherine with contrasting characters and a night that is haunting them even after 20 years and a hacker/ghost which has left them crumbling. These four friends tried to play a prank on one of their batchmates Sanya using an Ouija but the events that took place the next day shook them to the core.

They never thought their silly prank could turn into a disaster which led to Sanya's death and is now putting their lives in jeopardy. And then there is someone who knows about their secret and is trying to unravel the mystery of that night. Is the hacker for real or is it the ghost of Sanya that is haunting them to avenge her death?

With the secret that has been kept under wraps for 20 years, and a hacker or perhaps a ghost of Sanya, Will the friends reunite to find the missing pieces of the puzzle? What does life have in store for them? Will the secrets that unfold turn their relationships upside down?

With a brilliant narration with multiple POV's and an engaging storyline, this book is sure to entertain you till the end. The twists and turns in the story will keep you on the edges of your seat throughout the story. A remarkable work by a debut author and the combination of thriller and paranormal elements makes it so interesting that you can't help but wait for the next scene to unfold. I couldn't put the book away even for a minute and I was so absorbed into the story that I finished it one sitting. Highly recommended for those who love the thriller and horror genre.

‘That night’ hand turned into a flickering flame. She had burnt her fingers to light it and now she was going to risk becoming a moth, by going near it. Again.

An unknown person, predicted as a hacker, haunting or blackmailing Anjali, Natasha, Katherine and Riya, on their devices and in their lives as well. Seeing the dead and living in a state of fear- That Night is the story of fear, a murder of an innocent, who deserves the justice named Sania. The reason for her death is unknown but all others who played with her that night knows how she died, the secret shared among all, unknown-known, hidden among them, but someone wants to open that incident again and it converts into a dread experience, awe events and fearful days and nights.

The story delivers some eeriness of doing wrong, the feeling when fun converts into problems and causes troubles. The theme that is based on a fearful environment also discloses that how coincidences turn into inauspicious forthcomings.

Talking about characters, there a few but the story shapes accordingly, from one to another. Basically, it is divided into two timelines, the past and present. The author kept the reader’s attention through this timeline and also balanced the suspense and reality at the same time.
Moreover, the plot is interesting and keeps the reader hooked with the suspense and the writing style and flow connect characters uniquely.
For me it is and four-star read. If you like the suspense and horror genre this book suits you.

Natasha, Riya, Anjali, and Katherine were inseparable best friends during their college years, each unique in her own way, until that fateful night changed everything.

It started with a bottle of whisky and a game of Ouija, but it ended in tragedy with the death of Sania, their difficult hostel mate. The friends made a solemn vow to never speak of that night again, a promise that allowed their friendship and the weight of their guilt to lie dormant for two decades.

Now, however, someone is toying with them, threatening to expose the secret that only Sania knew. Is it a hacker exploiting their remorse, or has Sania's spirit truly returned to seek revenge for her untimely demise?

As the mysterious threat looms closer, the friends reunite to piece together the events of that night. Yet, as they share their versions of the story, discrepancies arise. It becomes clear that none of them is revealing the complete truth.
I loved the storyline and writing style of this book. Kept me hooked and the twists and turns are really well articulated. It's in multiple POVs and a mix of paranormal and thriller elements is worth reading.

OMG!! These are the 3 words I'm left with after reading this book. I mean what an engaging thriller book this is.

The story begins with four best friends - Natasha, Riya, Anjali, and Katherine's with a bottle of whisky and a game of Ouija, but ends with the death of their friend Sania unlikable hostel mate.

After that night, these four friends promised that they wouldn't say it to anyone, and they kept their friendship and guilt dormant for the next twenty years.

But now there's someone who is threatening them to reveal the truth that only Sania knew.

- Was it a hacker who wanted to play games with these four for his benefit or was it the ghost of Sania who wanted to take revenge on these four.

After all this, all the four friends reunite and reunite the story of that night, but strange thing is that these four-story pieces don't fit and none of them are telling the whole truth.

That Night is a dark, twisted tale of friendship and betrayal that draws you in and confounds you at every turn.

This book is amazing especially if you're a thriller lover then don't miss out on this. The author has done a great job, every character is defined in perfection that you will feel like the story is real.

The title of the book can't be better And one more thing that I would like to appreciate is the imagination power of the author. I was able to visualize the scene while reading the book.
.
I loved this book ❤

That night revolves around 4 thick friends playing a prank on one of their college mates that turns horribly wrong. The prank victim dies and nobody wants to talk about what happened that night. Knit with so many twists, giving the readers to speculate every possible way the story could lead and yet defying it with another out of the box twist, keeps us constantly on the edge of the seat. I like how so many social taboos were brought under the limelight, throwing subtle yet blaring signs of awareness to the readers.
Marital issues, betrayal, honesty, LGBTQ+, mental health, sexual abuse, career doubts and everything a person could go through was spoken about with such ease. Also how all these issues tied families together must be considered, the extent to which trust plays a role amongst them, was beautifully portrayed.
I loved how the author kept shifting the realms between a technology dependent world and paranormal world.
But when friends can care about each other so much so that they cross seven seas to take care of each other, things can fall into places.
.
There are certain books that make me wanna stay up all night and finish reading because I just cannot stand the suspense. This book was one such works. I finished this in one read because I could not stop. @nidhiupadhyaywrites thank you so much for writing this beautiful piece. Looking forward to read more from you.

That Night by Nidhi Upadhyay

Now a days we can see a lot of prank videos on youtube. Someone intentionally does these activities on others but just for fun and to make them and the viewers laugh. But many are dangerous and ends up wrong harming the actors or the victim.

This book is a horror mystery book that revolves around how things can go wrong.
Two timelines.
The prank played was in 1997 and twenty years later something horrible rises up to take the revenge.

Encaptivating storytelling alongside riveting story line is enough to keep a reader hooked till the end. It creates am atmosphere of hazzy foggy backdrop of a hostel where four friends play a prank on another unlikable mate. She somehow dies. But was it their fault or the Ouija horribly went wrong? Even if they promised to keep this secret between us for life, do all of them really know what really happened with Sania that night? But when twenty years later when they are living their lives blissfully in different areas of the world shake up with a twisted turn, What secrets will start to ooze up and how will it entangle them in its enigmatic web? Is it someone else trying to threaten and use it in their favour or is it truly the dead girls soul that is going to torment them?

I recommend it to all mystery book lovers.

About-
What started as a game of 4 college friends Riya, Natasha, Katherine, and Anjali in their college hostel surrounded by a forest, turned into their worst nightmare.
Something horrible happened that night that changed their life and their friendship.

The story runs into two times, the time of that night and present time where all the friends are in different places, occupied in their own life with no contact with each other. Even after so many years, that night was alive in their darkest places.
Suddenly, strange events started happening forcing them to unite together and to find the secret of that night.

My experience -
I just loved the whole setting and writing style. It was a murder mystery along with a tint of paranormal and LGBTQ romance.
The first few chapters were started a bit unhurried for me but after that book caught the pace and I was deadly engrossed till the end.

It shows how society can change people's desire to live just because they are different, just because a girl loves a girl and a boy loves a boy, they are not even accepted by their parents. Their dreams, relationships, their existence is shattered into pieces.

I HIGHLY recommend this book to EVERYONE there. Go and get this one.

This book is very interesting. For thriller lovers like me, it is a delight.

Four friends, one night, one death, and everything changed.
Katherine, Natasha, Anjali, Riya are best friends. Met in college, they formed a bond like nobody else.
But one prank changed everything. They all vowed to never talk about "That night" again. They buried the past in the darkest corners of their minds.
But what happens when skeletons come out of the closet and the buried secrets haunt you 20 years later?

The plot is excellent where every chapter hits you hard. There is a discovery in each chapter, which keeps adding to the suspense. The paranormal feeling keeps floating in the air.

The characters are relatable and well placed. The writing is good, with lucid language.

If you like thrillers and mysteries, pick this up.

Taking a popular quote from another famous author whose books I’ve grown up reading; “When people tell me I’ve kept them up all night, I feel like I’ve succeeded” – Sidney Sheldon
This is exactly what “That Night” has done to me for 2 consecutive nights. The characters seem so real that I could actually feel them next to me in my bedroom.
The camaraderie of 4 friends Natasha, Katherine, Riya and Anjali spoiled by one silly prank on a drunk night feels as it could be a leaf out of one our lives’ stories! I mean we all have been there, done that; and now to look at it with such acute lens makes you admire the author’s beautiful rendition of plotting a mysterious crime scene intertwining thrill and horror!
A must read for all who crave for some exciting stimulation of mind and to go down the memory lane, as it is sure to jolt you with memories of your mischief nights with friends!

The book is about four best friends (Natasha, Riya, Anjali and Katherine) and how one night changes their lives forever. Nothing is the same after that one Ouija prank, which results in the death of Sania, their unlikeable hostel mate.
They promised to keep it a secret and for the last 20 years they were all going on with their lives but suddenly someone wants to uncover the truth of that night. This person creates a stir in their life.

This is a thriller novel.

The story is very interesting and sometimes a little scary.

It has horror as well as suspense.

The story takes you on a ride that will surely give you goosebumps and keep you on the edge of your seat.

The language used is really nice and easy.

I highly recommend this book.

0.5 stars.

"Dhokha" is a term for cheating in Hindi, though the English equivalent doesn't capture the sentiments well. However, if I had to describe to a non-Hindi speaker what "dhokha" means, I'd ask them to read this book.

Extremely highly rated on Amazon India, I picked this story as I was in the mood for a quick, nail-biting thriller. Nothing state-of-the-art, just your usual I-know-what-you-did-last-summer types, and "That Night" fit the description. We were off to a good start, too. I was enjoying the setting-an engineering college in a quaint little town where four friends are making memories. But this, right here was where my five pages of bliss ended and my ordeal began.

To call "That Night" poorly edited would be an understatement. This book is an amalgamation of half-baked ideas served with a side of tone-deaf, poor, and immature writing. I start with the part where the author describes a character as "exceptionally good-looking, fair and tall" in the same line in which she describes his female counterpart's "average dusky Indian looks." Then, we move on to, "She wondered why Anjali delayed having kids. She was amazing with them and Sid doted on Ian and Ryan like his own. It could have saved their marriage." Mind you, the woman in question leaves her husband Sid because he forces himself upon her in bed. And finally, we have the "I kept it there only naa," repeated and out-of-place mentions of the phrase "that night" and the crude colloquial terms that are grammatically incorrect.

I kept fishing for reasons to give "That Night" at least 2 stars, 'cause I've never left a lower GR rating. But this book successfully made me break my three-and-a-half-year streak.

This one took me less than 1 Week to finish & it would have been fewer sittings if not for work. It kept me engaged the entire time, which is not easy for me!

The story is about a prank game of four best friends in the story that causes the death of another hostel mate after which all four friends promise each other to keep this secret a secret for the upcoming life. But years later those four are facing their black truth for some reason. But wait.... when they four tried to fit their particular part of the story, that wasn't fit to make a whole frame.🤯🤯

Is there a ghost in the story or does anyone else with these four know this secret that is now taking advantage of their fear of the truth of that night?

There are more twists to come in the story ahead that will shock you. The book is written in alternating perspectives, which I enjoyed, & it truly kept me guessing the whole time as to what was happening, & what the real deal was with all these complex, entertaining characters.

In all, the book is very intelligently written and it's clear that the author has a talent for crafting stories.

I recommend it if you're looking for a unique type of thriller (and are OK with a slightly slower start).

Natasha, Riya, Anjali and Katherine were best friends until something gruesome happened on the night of 1997. It was the night when four of them were madly drunk and all they did was played the game of Ouija (spirit board). After that night, it was found that their hostel mate Sania, whom they used to hate has died, and they promised each other that they would never discuss 'that night!'.

Now, twenty years later — Natasha, Riya, Anjali and Katherine, all are settled in their life, but suddenly they started getting messages regarding the night of 1997, the night when Sania died !

It is indeed a well written and engrossing read. The story goes in flashback and again comes to present creating a suspense till the end. I loved the way the author has added the terror descriptions which surely gives a sort of tension to your spine. Overall it was an enthralling and spine-chilling read for me and I would rate it 4.5/5

My initial assumption was that this would be bastartized version of "I Know what you did last summer" but the ending really pulled it off. This novel really blew my mind and I had so much fun going through this journey.

TITLE: That Night
AUTHOR: Nidhi Upadhyay
GENRE: Thriller
RATING: ****/5

Four friends. One prank. Gone wrong.

I loved this book and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good thriller to read. The characters were so relatable and so well-built.

The plot is very good and the way the story was told, from different perspectives and with a little bit of flashback here and there, made the book very engaging. There was not even a single point in the book where I felt like putting it down.

The story was told in a simple way and so this will be a good read for anyone. I thoroughly enjoyed it!!!
