A frail young girl flees a roaring forest fire in the middle of the night desperately taking refuge in a cave where she quickly loses consciousness. She wakes up in a strange, tiny village populated by fairy-like creatures. Her hosts seem intrigued by the sparkles of light that seem to surround her. The village chieftain explains that one of their hunters found her passed out in the forest and brought her back here for treatment. He asks who she is, but she remembers nothing except for a wall and flames. The chief is baffled by her tale as there has not been any fire in the forest lately, and yet the young woman does indeed show signs of burns. Somewhat recovered and dressed in woodland clothes made by the villagers, the young lady asks to meet the hunter who found her in the forest. She asks her savior to take her to where he found her, hoping that seeing the place will restore her memory. But Meliss refuses -- the rules of the village say that only hunters can enter the forest, and all of the sparkles surrounding the girl would catch the eyes of predators living in these woods...

What follows is a tale of discovery, magic, tragedy, and adventure, as the girl discovers powers that may or may not be borne of an ancient evil. She befriends a cunning, talking wolf along the way, and together the two set out on a journey that will not soon be easily forgotten.
A beautifully illustrated, magical fairy tale sure to appeal to young teens and up, created by the award-winning team behind the world-renowned LOVE series of wordless wildlife graphic novels.

"Discover who you are and you will be saved."

The literary device of a character searching for a forgotten identity has been done before, but never as beautifully as in this graphic novel.

Here we meet a young girl who can't recall her past, but knows she does not belong in the quaint Hobbit-like village near where she was found. She heads deep into the forest to discover her true identity. Things get a little bewildering there, and it's hard to figure out just who the villains are, and, indeed, what's going on with them. The artwork, however, is transplendent, with lush scenery, and charmingly depicted characters.

So, I'm assigning five stars to the illustrations, three to the story, making the book an overall four star read.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a look at this beautiful book.

(actual rating: 3.5/5)

I'm a total sucker for good art, and this really proved that.

'Brindille' tells the enchanting tale of a girl who finds herself in an unknown village, following a forest fire and the loss of all of her memories. She sets out through the forest, looking for answers, and makes an unlikely friend. But the more she learns about herself, the more complicated things seem to be.

The very first thing that needs to be mentioned about this graphic novel is just how absolutely stunning the art is. It's genuinely amazing how detailed and effective the art is, and how easily it conveys the emotions of the main character and story. Even though the storyline doesn't make sense at certain points, the art is consistently wonderful.

Speaking of the plot, while fairly disjointed, it was intriguing enough to keep my interest. I was reasonably invested in the girl's backstory and how it would play out with the rest of the book. The ending, although somewhat confusing and leaving many unanswered questions, was ultimately satisfying to what the book was trying to accomplish and express. Or at least, that's the conclusion I've come to, having had a few days to ruminate on the ending.

Overall, I'd recommend this book for its fantastical storyline and excellent art, and think that it would especially appeal to anyone looking for an encompassing yet quick graphic novel read.

The artwork is just gorgeous. The book reminds me of Bone without the humor. It's got that animated Disney look to the art. I loved the fantasy setting, but some of the story was confusing. I'm still not sure where this girl came from or what happened to her at the end. Her journey through this fantasy world though had me enthralled.

I’m not sure what exactly happened in Brindille. It starts out really good, a bit vague but I can handle that at the beginning of a story. The opening panels of this graphic novel are gorgeous forest art. Our heroine is mysterious but interesting… and so it goes along. Then somewhere around issue #3 things start to happen with almost no context. I felt like I had missed something numerous times to throughout to the last issue in this collection (#8). I flipped back a couple times in case I was just tired and missing details but they literally just aren’t there.

It’s too bad the plot and information is lost as the art is wonderful. I loved how panels were very distinct in colour tones. When it was the war or enemy the panels were very dark, heavy in blues and reds. Whereas our forest panels (mainly featuring Brindille) were green and yellow, bright and filled with hope.

If only I could have figured out more of the storyline. It’s almost like the creative team was told in issue 3 or 4 that they had less time to tell the story than expected; so they panicked and cut out too much? I’m not sure what happened except that it just fell apart for me. So sad as I think there was real potential here.

Please note: I received an eARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. This is an honest and unbiased review.

I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

Brindille is a stunning graphic novel about a young girl who has escaped a fire and woken up amongst a village of people with no knowledge of who she is or where she has come from. The girl longs to know these things and tries to leave and find out. The villagers are scared of the wrath of the shadow demons chasing the girl and abandon her. The girl goes in search of discovering who she is and meets a fox who is there to help protect and guide her.
This book is a beautiful mythical type the full of beautiful illustrations that such you right into the story.
I was confused by the ending as to what happens to the girl, but apart from this really enjoyed this graphic novel!

French comics tell some very interesting stories and have a set of art styles that I don't typically see in US comics these days, and that is very much the case in this fantasy story. There are some great allegorical elements and a sense of utter bafflement (matching the character's fish out of water confusion) that really keeps the story interesting. While the ultimate payoff didn't work for me, I love the art and loved the journey.

"SNOW WHITE meets BONE in a dark LORD OF THE RINGS forest"
That's how the publisher describes this comic book.
Sounds intriguing, right?

And it must be said: Federico Bertolucci's fairytale-like cover immediately catches the reader's eye.
This 48 year old illustrator is born and raised in Italy. In 1998 he started a collaboration with Walt Disney Italy and in 2001 he became one of the illustrators of the magazine Witch.
But not only is he a good illustrator, he's an expert in colorisation as well.
Did you know that he's also a 5-time Eisner nominee?
His work can be admired on his blog, instagram, twitter and facebook.

The plot is written by Frédéric Brrémaud.
This 48 year old French scenarist who was born in South-Korea, studied in France and lives now in Italy.
Although he writes scenarios for a big variety of comic books, he also often works together with Federico Bertolucci. One of their most successful series is Love, which consists of several wordless wildlife graphic novels.
You can follow him on instagram and facebook.

Although Federico Bertolucci and Frédéric Brrémaud are promoted as an award-winning creative team, it seems that in Brindille they've chosen to let the images get the upper hand.
And yes, the illustrations are beautiful and definitely worth 4*. To get an idea of them, you can watch the book trailer.
But the plot is not on the same level. There are lots of ideas incorporated in the story, but the transition between them isn't really fluent. Some of them are superfluous and others aren't worked out well enough which leaves the reader a bit confused sometimes.

My overall feeling is one of wonder because of the fairytale-like artwork mixed with huge disappointment because the plot doesn't live up to the expectations.
So even though the illustrations deserve 4*, the whole gets only 2*.
But there's certainly a lot of potential which piques the interest for the previous works Bertolucci and Brrémaud made together and for their future works.

The artwork in this graphic novel is beyond stunning, bringing to life this magical fairy tale with every page. The art style reminded me of The Sword in the Stone and those kind of movies. And I absolutely loved it! You can tell how much effort went into every frame. The Shadow Hunters were done so well, as were the mermaids and the running/action scenes. Honestly, it was all so beautifully rendered. I won't spoil the story, but this one is definitely worth checking out!

Thank you Netgalley for the ARC.

I have been yearning to grab some more graphic novels with fantasy vibes, and this book did it!

If you're looking for an absolutely beautiful book that gives off Disney-fantasy vibes (think Fantasia, Sleeping Beauty - some of those gorgeous classics), and will make you smile then grab Brindille. I was honestly surprised how engaged I was with this book. I needed to binge it and putting it down hurt. I absolutely loved every second I spent in this world and I want more. The sketches are fantastic, the colours are beautiful and the story is just so wicked. The story can be a little... hard to follow and odd. But it was a beautiful one, so I'll give it that.

Three out of five stars.

Wow, what a stunning graphic novel (or bande desinée, as it's originally French). The artwork is amazing and makes the main character Brindille and everyone she encounters come to life.

The story was a bit confusing and I have to admit, I am not sure if I understood the ending. I think I'll have to re-read this a couple more times to form my own opinion on it and maybe discuss it with some other readers. But it was very captivating from the beginning. A very magical story with beautiful illustrations!

Ohh this was better than I expected! Such a lovely surprise when that happens. The story was interesting and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The artwork was stunning and so well done. Plus I feel it fitted the storyline quite well.

Thank you, Diamond Book Distributors, for the gifted digital copy in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

Brindille is about facing your fears and chasing the shadows away and I loved the artistic talent that went into depicting Twig’s journey alongside Wolf. Though the artwork is stunning the storyline was a slight struggle for me. I’m not sure if it was the translation to English or if there is a history to his tale that we may not know. Overall it was jumpy and tended to leave me more confused than not at times. Right as I was getting my bearings on the premise it would sidetrack to another theme or aspect without giving enough closure to the first piece. I am still not sure if I’ve fully tied everything together. Definitely one I need to reread to see if I can follow in another light on the second go-around. Debating Googling a few French fairy tales to see if I can get a little more background before doing so too.

The characters are beautifully rendered. Even if there was a plot barrier for me it was exciting watching Twig find herself and bond with the foxish, Wolf. There are tons of creatures and side characters to grab your attention too. I do wish there would’ve been more background though. I did get a bit of the secrecy considering the vague open ending, but amnesic plotlines for a graphic novel in this version needed a smidge more for me.

I adored the almost Alice in Wonderland vibe that followed Twig through the different parts of this world. From the troll-like camp that rescues her from a fire all the way to the underwater realm of the mermaids. And the artwork alone is just truly stunning in this magical dreamscape. Each scene crafts vivid imagery through each artistic stroke. I kept thinking FernGulley in my head as I read along, though this is a bit darker than that in illustration and a heck of a lot prettier.

If you enjoy beautiful illustrations, fantasy and can appreciate the talent that goes into a translated work than I would recommend this graphic novel for that alone.

I LOVED the art (though wolf looked more like a fox to me), but I didn't enjoy the story all that much. I felt that it was hard to follow at times, and that the images didn't show well what was going on here and again. But art for fabulous and for that alone, I give this read 3 stars.

Right so it’s basically about a young girl who has no memory, lives in a goblin like village, meets a wolf (looks more like a fox tbh), meets a mermaid and fights a monster. This graphic novel was super quick like a lotta things are happening at once that left no time to explain exactly what the young girls goal is. Whilst the sketches of the characters was really drawn well, the plot could have done a better job at explaining what’s going on with the girl and wolf.

Thanks Netgalley and Magnetic Press for allowing me to read this graphic novel!

This novel is absolutely stunning. The artwork and story combine so seamlessly to tell the tale of Brindille- a girl trapped in a world she doesn’t belong in. It gives off the nostalgic feeling of a traditional, childhood fairytale or storybook. There is a lot of emotion conveyed through both the art and the words, and I was actually a bit sad at the end of the novel!

It’s a perfect tale wrapped up with a bow. I would definitely recommend any lover of graphic novels read this!

This was not my favourite thing I've ever read, but boy was the art pretty. The story felt disjointed and choppy, which made it hard to be really absorbed in the fantasy world the author created. The art was nice though, I enjoyed that at least.

Oeh!

This is a beautiful illustrated graphic novel. Characters are drawn in a fluid, animated style that gives them life and character - the wolf is especially lively whenever he's in a panel. Colour is worked brilliantly, the whole palette changing to reflect the mood or location. Good stuff. The inclusion of early sketches, scenes and character designs at the end is really interesting and, in a way, gives more flavour to the world than the novel itself full managed.

The story is relatively simple. A girl wakes in a strange village after fleeing a forest fire. She has no memory of anything before the fire and she appears to be hunted by creatures called 'shadow hunters'. In her adventure she's joined by a talking wolf, and they must overcome many trials to find out the truth of who she is and why she is hunted.

There aren't too many surprises here, you'll probably have seen similar tropes in any number of other books and comics, but the art elevates it. The ending made me go 'huh'. It raised a few questions just as the story was over and made me sit and reflect for a while after finishing.

Overall, a good read, and suitable for young teens and up.

Let me start by saying how beautiful the art in this book is. It's beyond beautiful, from the tiny details to the massive waterfalls I loved the art work very much. The story starts on a confused note that becomes clearer as we read on, I liked the plot and the support characters a lot.
I appreciate the way sacrifices were made necessary for the betterment and development of the main character as it always seems to be the case in magical tales. It was smiliar to a fairytale but with broader magic having witches, mermaids, memory spirits and what not. The idea of hospitality turning into distrustful actions by some words is seen here and that made me sad.

Real friendship takes a high place in this book, the fox is my favourite and will always be a fond character. I would definitely recommend this book to all those who love themselves a nice magical tale, the concepts were good here except a few hitches but the art made up for everything that was a bit lacking.

A fairy-looking girl has lost all her memories as she found herself in the middle of a forest, filled with little creatures who welcomed her into their village home. Somehow, she’s been hunted by people who’re willing to go to war if that means taking her back.

Along the way, she befriends a wolf that teaches her how to survive despite their circumstances and at the end of the day, he’s the only one who sacrifices himself in order for her to see the real truth.

But I really don’t want to give away many spoilers so let me just say that every single chapter had a magical setting, fantastic and delightful creatures and it was absolutely entertaining from start to finish. The art is stunning and I kind of got the feeling I was watching an animated film, which made it even better.

I loved the main idea behind the story and I think this is a perfect stand alone for fantasy lovers like myself. Would totally recommend it to check it out!

The art was what really stood out about this story. I couldn't totally follow the plot, and I was left confused in the end. I think the best character was the wolf, and I wish the book hadn't jumped around so much. Despite this, though, the artwork had such a rich fantasy vibe to it and it was really nice to look at. The story was a really quick read and even though I didn't love the story, it was definitely worth reading.

Brindille is a graphic novel that is enchanting with suggestive drawings and a captivating story.
Focused on a girl who, having lost her memory, finds herself in a village after escaping a forest fire. In search of answers she meets a fox ready to help her, so begins her adventure but above all the journey to get to know herself.

The strong point of this graphic novel are certainly the drawings, simply stunning, so detailed that they are able to perfectly accompany the enchanting story of Brindille.
A story that, even with some flaws, including a little confusion, is always captivating and intriguing!

A perfect read for anyone looking for a quick and fantastic read, with wonderful designs to get lost in.
