Betrothed, on the eve of Hogmanay, to a stranger with a terrible reputation though her father believes he will unite and strengthen their two clans, Flora is devastated when she comes across her father's murdered body. Sure that Ragnall did the deed to have the lairdship all the sooner, she runs away and hides until she can have her revenge. Now, two years later, she returns during the time of festivities to enacted her vengeful plan, but the new laird is a surprise in more ways than one.

I've not read this author's work, but have seen it around. The setting and situations always seemed like books I'd enjoy so I was glad to give her works a go. Her description of medieval Scotland and a Highland clan as well as the development of the main characters in this novella-length piece kept my interest. However...

Revenge plots are iffy for me and this story, exciting and sensual though it was, proves my case. She has no proof other than opportunity and possible motive, but then the opportunity is true of others and motive as well including herself, but she is all set to kill him after no investigation. Granted, his charm does check her, but then I was amused at how a gal so full of hate and revenge could allow herself to be distracted.

Also, fair warning, this gets pretty spicy and dark with rape encounters while in captivity (not by the hero).

All in all, it was a moderately good tale and I would pick up more of the author's books to try out one that didn't involve a revenge element. Recommend to those who enjoy spicier Highland Romance.

Reviewing this book again, Amazon KU has my review!
I love this author, she is amazing. I cannot get enough of her books!
Lady Flora and her faithful servant left her home on the night her father the Laird was murdered.
She was betrothed to Ragnall.
Since this is a well written short book, it’s fast paced, with loads of action and romance! I enjoyed this book and definitely recommend it ❤️💕

Disastrous Dairy Maid

This is my first book from this author and it turned out to be more than I expected. I had expected something sweeter and fluffier, but what I got was on the gritty side as Flora finds herself falling for the man she vowed to end and at the crippling hands of a man she never desired. Surprising as it was, I liked it.

Ragnall, despite appearances and reputation, is fair in his decision making. He also surprises Flora by giving her a choice when it comes to more adult pursuits. I do like how things develop and are revealed between them.

Do be mindful of triggers as there is sexual assault within.

I received an author's copy of the audio book. The narrator is Gareth J Davies. It's my first with him as narrator. I do love the accent. 😍

Will her determination to exact revenge cost her the love of her life ...

While I understand Flora’s sorrows, I immediately disagreed with her need to frame Ragnall without any proof other than her certainties.
Yet she is a young girl who came of age under duress. She left everything behind, making an oath to punish her father’s murderer. She rebuilt herself in a stronger self.
Yet she for too long stay blind to Ragnall’s true nature. So driven by her revenge, while she notices his kindness and is not immune to his charms, she can’t tear herself from her need for payback.
Ragnall is not his sire, whatever the rumors about his lineage, he wants to be a fair laird. Not one ruling by fear.
With his betrothal, he was uniting two strong clans for a better future with hope for his own future family but everything is thrown of balance when his soon-to-be father in law is murdered and his betrothed ran away.
Sure, he is quite a flirt when he meets again Flora, a bit insisting in his seducing but he is not one to force himself on a woman.
Their relationship is strained by her thirst of revenge, when himself is unsure of what to believe of her. Trust is something to be won, and both began on the wrong foot. Why their lack of faith might cost them more than they expect.

In a time of uncertainty, Flora is a pawn in her father’s plans. Wed to Ragnall despite her tender age, her father has at least deferred the wedding night for a year when their vows will be affirmed. However, following the eerie sounds of the bagpipes, Flora discovers her father’s murder that night, and flees with her maid, only to return two years later to exact her revenge on the man who took her father’s life. This novel has tension and drama from beginning to end and keeps the reader guessing as to the outcome. I found the story to be somewhat brutal, and there were aspects that made me uncomfortable. Nevertheless, the attraction between Flora and Ragnall is tangible and even though she distrusts him, Flora quickly realises that there is more to the situation than meets the eye. The story is well written and is a standalone, coming to a happy conclusion. I received a copy of this novel through BookSprout as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.

The Lady's Guide to a Highlander's Heart is an incredible adventure that left my heart battered but happy. This was a fabulous tale of one woman's whole-hearted vengeance turned unexpectedly to love. I would have never anticipated the events that unfolded before my eyes, but that didn't make them any less powerful or precious. This story was an amazing surprise that challenged me every step of the way.

I would recommend this book to any romance reader who is looking for something new and different. The historical background just added to its appeal, and it made the story that much more impactful. I was left breathless and happy after journeying with these two incredible characters. It was not easy but it was so worth the pain and sorrow. Emmanuelle de Maupassant did a wonderful job of crafting and executing this wildly entertaining story! I look forward to reading more from her.

The Lady’s Guide to a Highlander’s Heart

This book is wonderful. When I started it I felt that I didn’t want to put it down. Flora lived with her Father who was laird of the keep. He had arranged a marriage to Ragnall. As a child it was believed that he had agreed for her to marry Calder but her Father changed his mind and a hand fasting marriage was performed with the agreement that Flora would not be touched sexually for 12 months. This story has a love story and mistrust, threats, death, unlawful imprisonments, it gives the reader the underlying fear of something terrible happening. I really was so engrossed with this story and I loved and enjoyed every word of it.

The Lady’s Guide to a Highlander’s Heart, by Emmanuelle de Maupassant. Ladies this book has a whole lot of heat for such a short story and let me tell you, “ I loved every minute of it, and I am not ashamed”. Emmanuelle what did you do to me woman?! I can no longer think of the Christmas holiday and New Years the same any more. Flora and Ragnall were on fire in this book.
Let me tell you readers, their passion was explosive like a volcano. The writer did a great job with pulling me in with the mystery and the drama. The entertainment captivated me and didn’t let go. The opening of the wedding had my interest, but I was definitely into the book when the murder happens. Fearful of what’s to come, Flora and her maid leave the home of her intended.
Realizing that all is lost Ragnall goes on with his life. Years later, Flora unknowingly crosses paths with Ragnall and then all heck breaks loose. Evil step-brothers come to create chaos and corruption. Attempted murders are thwarted. Betrayal and trust are thrown away and decisions come to the forefront of people’s life.
During all this, the strong desire that Ragnall has for Flora explodes with sexual tension that can’t be easily contained. In his chambers Ragnall shows Flora how a real Highlander makes love to his woman. Ragnall, tells her passionate and slow, but Flora craves for fast and hard. Lord ladies, Ragnall can have me anyway he wants. That man had me panting, after how the writer described him in the book.
Every time I read that he took off his tartan and being naked had me a little hot. Ok, maybe “very hot” and definitely bothered. Then with the description of his manhood alone had me salivating. My fellow readers, I recommend this book with two snaps and a twist of pleasure. Until next time... read on!

I really enjoyed reading this interesting historical romance that is filled with intrigue & has an emotional undertone. The well-paced plot has detailed scenes descriptions & good world building. The characters are well-developed with complex strong-willed personalities that are well-depicted according to the time era. There is good support from the secondary characters.
It is about: a young woman (Flora Dalreagh) whose father (Malcolm Dareagh) was murdered & goes on the run. After a year, she comes back with revenge on her mind against her handfasted husband (Ragnell, Laird of Balmore).
There is: a despicable stepbrother (Calder), an unusual curse, drama, intrigue, some twists, suspense, alliances, magic, jealousy, deceit, betrayal, vengeful feelings, murder, distrust, misunderstandings, regrets, some steam & a satisfying hard-earned happy conclusion.

This short story is set during the yuletide season and spans two years.

Although there was a family tree, the relationships were still confusing and I just went with the flow and enjoyed it.

Flora was impulsive and assuming. She harbored a misplaced hatred towards Ragnall, her betrothed. I didn't connect much with any of the characters. All I could say is the murderer became obvious in the other half of the story.

Ragnall is a fair leader who wants to correct the wrongs of the previous generation, specifically marriage matches against one’s will. I also liked that while he desired Florrie, he did not force himself upon her.

There was only one coupling that was a little detailed but it was enough. Guaranteed HEA!

3.5 stars rounded up.

When Flora Dalreagh discovers her father has been murdered in the night, she hastily departs the castle, fearing her new betrothed, Ragnall Dalreagh, committed the crime to further his ambitions for wealth and title.

Two years pass and Flora returns to the castle where Ragnall is now laird as a maid seeking to get close to him and finally avenge her father. She doesn’t anticipate the passion Ragnall ignites within her or the confusion it brings. The castle is full of treachery and deceit and more secrets threaten the tentative bond developing between Ragnall and Flora.

This was a quick read and I think it definitely benefited from the audio narration. The characters aren’t as well-developed as they could be, but this is to be expected in a novella and they were still interesting leads. The villain was a bit obvious for me, but this didn’t lessen my enjoyment of the story, though I did feel like I missed something given how quickly Flora professed to love Ragnall after nursing a fierce hatred for him for two years. Otherwise, I enjoyed their relationship and Ragnall’s quick defense of Flora.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Blog link: https://mustreadalltheromance.blogspo...

Emmanuelle de Maupassant writes an exciting tale of love and the need for revenge. I enjoyed Flora and Ragnall’s story immensely.

Betrothed to Flora, Ragnall, Laird of Balmore would be uniting two strong clans for a better future and hope for his people and his family. Things go awry when flora finds her father murdered and immediately assumes Ragnall is to blame. She runs away only to return to years later having plotted to avenge her father’s death. Finding Ragnall much different from the man she imagined him to be her heart has difficulty reconciling her desire for revenge and the passion she feels for the man she’s come to know.

Great character development, wonderful scenes, good dialogue, interesting and intriguing plot, beautiful romance. This is a well written, well paced story that develops extremely well. Emmanuel does such a great job of pulling the reader in and holding you captivated throughout.

Thank you so much Emmanuel for such a well written story and wonderful romance.

It's rare that I give a 5-star rating, but this story deserves it. Mix a strong lady, a laird, a thwarted ex-betrothed, and a murder with a lot of suspicion, and you have a great tale of intrigue and mystery, not to mention a 'who dunnit', all set in medieval Scotland. Unravelling who is the bad guy forms the basis, with the restraints of being a woman in that era woven throughout. One of Flora's cousins is nasty and ambitious, using her for his own ends. But, which one? There are a couple of sex scenes, but none that are not integral to the story. This is a well-crafted story and you will read it in one or two sittings.

Steamy and intense!

Flora believes her betrothed is responsible for her father's murder, so she makes her escape until she is ready to exact her revenge. Ragnall doesn't know who killed his predecessor, but he suspects it was Flora due to her flight from the castle the same night. Years later, she's in a position to fulfill her vow, but all the facts aren't lining up quite the way she thought they did.

This was a short story, but the romance between Ragnall and Flora was intense and emotional, very well written despite the brevity. I could sympathize with Flora's plight, even if there wasn't any evidence to back up her conclusion. The showdown at the end was perfectly balanced to see justice done and to guarantee our young couple the HEA they deserve. Very nicely done.

I read this story as part of the "Twelve Days of Christmas in a Highlander’s Arms" anthology.

Flora is nothing but a pawn in her fathers plans and he despite her young age weds her to Ragnall. The only concession is that the wedding night will be delayed by one year. On this night her father is murdered , she then flees the castle with her maid. She then returns two years later to exact revenge for his murder. There is a strong attraction between Flora and Ragnell. Will they work out the truth and prevail? This story has some brutality in it but is an excellent read.

The Chieftain of Clan Dalreagh is murdered in his bed the night of Hogmany, the same day his daughter has the handfasting ceremony that promises her to Ragnall, who is to become the next Chieftain.

Believing that he is the one who murders his beloved father, Flora runs away that night.

What will happen when Ragnall finds out? Will he believe that she is the one who killed the Chieftain?

The story is full of Scottish traditions and culture and in the heart of it, the fierce loyalty and love that bind clan members together.

If you love a story full of strong characters and the roads they have to travel to discover the truth, you must definitely read this book

The Lady’s Guide to a Highlander’s Heart is a wonderful story. It begins with a scrawny Laird’s daughter being handfasted to a handsome warrior, replacing the man the Laird had originally planned to marry his daughter to. Lady Flora Dalreagh, daughter of Laird Malcolm Dalreigh of Castle Dunrannoch, has decided that his stepson, Calder, will not be the man to wed his daughter, although that had been the agreement when he wed his second wife, the late Lady Brina, mother to Calder. With the passing of Ragnall’s father, he now holds the Lairdship of Balmore. With the union of Ragnall and Flora, their clans will be a stronger force against the McDonald and Douglas clans.

While it isn’t what Flora wants, she agrees to the handfasting to Ragnall and the ceremony takes place, but the delay in the bedding will wait until Flora has matured more in her physical stature. That night, upon going to visit her father in his quarters, she finds him deceased with his own dagger between his ribs. Frightened that her new husband is the murderer, she and her maid run away from the castle and make their way to Maggie’s brother’s Croft, where they spend the next two years.

Two years for Flora to grow up and become a beautiful woman, and two years to fuel her need to avenge her father’s death. She has thought long and hard about how she will carry out her mission, and when the times comes, she and Maggie make their way to Balmore, under disguise and none the wiser. But things aren’t what they seemed two years earlier, and the deception becomes unraveled as Flora seeks answers to her father’s murder.

This is a very different story as there is an old curse and betrayal from men out for revenge and mistrust
and rumors. All of these causes both our hero and heroine must sorry and hurt and maybe death.
Flora Dalreagh is the daughter of Malcom Laird of Dunrannoch. It has been thought by his step-son Calder that they would marry and he would someday be the Laird. When he found out that she is to be handfasted to Ragnell, Laird of Balmore his is furious. Laird Ragnell has had a lot of rumors spread about him. There has been hints he is not really his father's son. His brother died and he was said to be blamed. Flora has never meet Ragnell, which for the time period is not unusual. Most marriages were to help the clan gain land or join two to make them stronger. She is young for a bride so her father has made Ragnell give her a year to stay at home and learn the lesson of a Chatelaine.
The cruse of Dalreagh is that when the bagpipes are heard walking the halls the Laird would perish an untimely death. After the handfasting Flora hears the pipes and finds her father dead.
In her young mind she knows Ragnell is guilty. So, she runs away with only her maid and best friend the only help leaving everything she knows.
There is many twists and turns in this fast pace story. What will happen when they meet again ?
Will he know her ? Does he think her dead ?Will the evil ones spoil their happiness ?
So much to find out. This book also shows us how the Guide books started.
I hope you give it a try; I don't want to say any more or it will ruin the story. I hope to read more of the stories and will review them then.
I received an ARC from the author and want to thank her. This is my opinion and am voluntarily giving it.

Emmanuelle De Maupassant, is my favourite historical romance/erotic fiction author. Her stories are always so well-balanced, passion and plot go hand in hand, and this one is no exception.

I must admit that I was both convinced that Ragnall was not our hero, and that he had committed the most awful crime. Flora has been betrothed to Ragnall but on the night of their handfasting Flora's father is found murdered. She is convinced (see it wasn't just me!) it is by the hand of Ragnall and flees vowing to avenge her father's death.

As always this was wonderfully written, and the plot was so engaging and absorbing that I felt I was in the castle listening and witnessing the drama and daily life.

There is a passionate and intense love making scene, which gets the heart racing. Not just because of the heat and desire but because this is when Flora plans to avenge her father's death. Then things take a turn and a twist and Flora is in more danger than ever. I think this tale really shows that sometimes our hero is the person we least expect.

Overall, this is a beautifully intense tale with exciting twists.

This book takes us back to how the guide started. A fast paced, engrossing read, which I read in a sitting. Strong characters all added to my enjoyment. Flora is convinced Ragnall murdered her father & is bent on revenge until she spends time with Ragnall & starts to doubt herself. A lovely read of revenge, misunderstandings, assumptions & an attraction that’s combustible - I loved it.

I'm going on the assumption you've not read any of Emmanuelle DeMaupassant's books if you're reading through reviews because if you had, you'd already know she has a gift of bringing a story to life with characters full of flaws, personality, a conviction in their beliefs, and undying loyalty to those they love. Speaking of love, when these characters find their own love it becomes awe-inspiring. That's how it is between Ragnall and Flora. All the drama, a murder, the whodunit, the treachery, and then you have the flirtation, the unexpected chemistry, the secrets, and finally the acknowledgment of what is right. It's a beautiful storyline that absolutely left me sighing by the end. I proudly recommend this book.
