Les Enfants du capitaine Grant #1-3

Rate this book

The creator of THE CHILDREN OF CAPTAIN GRANT graphic novel, ALEXIS NESME was born in the Rhône, in Villefranche sur Saône, in 1974. As a child he gained an initial enthusiasm for comics by making a few small stories but this initial enthusiasm quickly waned. It was only much later, after encountering the works of Loisel and Bud, that he discovered the possibilities of the artform. Nesme received a Bachelor of Applied Arts from Lyon University. He then entered the School of Decorative Arts in Strasbourg, where he learnt illustration and animation for children in the Claude Lapointe workshop. He also won the Alph’art Seed Pro in Angouleme. He graduated in 1997 and since then has worked in the illustration for various media outlets and children’s book publishers.

Nesme’s comics career started when he showed his work to French publisher Guy Delcourt, who put him in contact with Eric Omond. Omond then wrote a customized story based on the subjects and graphics he saw in Nesme’s portfolio and a comics career was born.

Alexis has paid particular attention to the coloring on his work, mixing all kinds of techniques in his work including : oil, ink, chalk, gouache, and colored pencil. Kent Williams, Dave McKean and Nicolas De Crécy are among the many artists that he lists as influences.

A very beautiful book! The characters are depicted in the form of animals. That's probably why even villains seem cute!

On adore !

From my early years I really like Jules Verne and his books, so this transition of his book "In Search of the Castaways" to the graphic novel, along with transformation of characters from humans to anthropomorphic animals was expected with great anticipation from my side - and it didn't disappoint.

Novel traces in book steps, and has great illustrations, which will most likely prompt youngsters to start reading Verne's more famous titles. Story is great, there's mystery along with a lot of historical, biological and geography details; I'd say classical Verne.

I would recommend this edition (Croatian edition is hardcover, with very solid translation, and really good print and binding quality) to both - young and old folks. You can't miss with this story, unless you don't have imagination and/or are too stern and pretentious. Anthropomorphic animals characters aren't something new, at first it reminded me on Art Spiegelman's "Maus", but story (and art!) here are something totally different. Art makes it almost a fairy-tale, with live, but realistic colors, almost like you're watching a cartoon.
I've even felt nostalgic by the end of the book. Thank you for reminding me on my childhood, five stars.

I had never heard of or read this story before and I really enjoyed it. I know it is geared for kids, but in my opinion adults can enjoy it as well. Its one of those stories where crazy stuff keeps happening and they keep finding a way out of it somehow. By the end of the book, you are so weary, it feels like you are on the voyage with them.

Where the book really shines is the art. The art is incredible. Landscapes, characters, architecture, everything in this book simply looks amazing. It looks like color pencil or soft paint, which gives the whole book this fairy tale feel. But then you see the detail on the buildings and things like trees, pavement, water, etc... and it anchors the story into reality (as much as possible).

If you are into fantastic, fairy tale like stories, make sure to check this out, it is a delightful read.

I was pulled to this book by the cover and the thought of reading a Jules Verne story that I'd never heard of before and I am really pleased I did. This is an awesome story, full of adventure and daring,
and everything you would expect from a Verne offering. What I especially like about this story is that the main heroes are searching for castaways along the 37th parallel which includes South America, Australia and New Zealand. For a kiwi to read a Jules Verne partly set in my own country but written about 150 years ago is pretty wild. Very enjoyable read and the artwork is excellent.

In realtà 2 stelle e mezza.

A really fabulous graphic novel version of the Jules Verne story! I picked it up at the library simply because of the illustration on the cover--the characters are all very well-dressed animals! I enjoyed the story, and I ended up reading it aloud to my son, who also loved it.

Utterly amazing adventure epic journey story that could put a lot of what's published today in pocket. Classic Jules Verne translated into comic book version for those unwilling to read the chunky descriptive original. The art style is gorgeous!

Humor nikakav. A opet... na trenutke je simpatično.
