Fourteen-year-old Zoey St. John is an ordinary kid with an extraordinary gift. She can see monsters.
But when she meets a secret society called The Agency, a group of people that share her unique ability to see the supernatural, Zoey is whisked off to a strange place, where monsters and humans coexist, where leprechaun gangs, giant fairies and vampire bowling balls are the least of her problems.
Soon a mystery unfolds and together with her friends, Zoey must retrieve a stolen device and prevent a catastrophic outbreak of monsters, and time is running out.

PERSONAL RESPONSE: This was a totally new type of read for me. I usually only like romantic books, not science fiction. I liked the book, The Seventh Sense by Kim Richardson; it had a little bit of suspense in it. I really enjoyed the way the main character, Zoey, went through her life. She seemed to understand that in life nothing was ever perfect. If I were Zoey I wouldn’t have known what to do about seeing weird monster looking things that could eat me. I thought it was very great of her for taking care of her foster siblings when their foster mom turned into a monster and tried killing them. I do think that she was a little crazy at times, but like I have always said we all die eventually. I don’t think she was afraid of dying; she was just trying to figure out why she could see these things when others could not. I liked how the author used such descriptive words and phrases to make it easy to visually all the supernatural creatures. As I was reading I felt like I was in the story with Zoey. The author made it very easy to place myself in the storyline along with the other characters.
PLOT: In the beginning of the story Zoey was getting moved from foster home to foster home. She had no idea who her parents were, all she knew was she was different just didn’t know how. She could see things which she had no idea what they were until she met Tristan, Agent Vargas and Agent Barnes. She was looking death straight in the eyes when those three guys saved her life. They realized that she could see the demon, so they decided to take her back to the Agency. The Agency was place where all the other agents and operatives lived in disguise. It was where the legal mystics and agents coexisted with each other. After being at the agency for a couple months, Zoey became best friends with Tristan and Simon, two other operatives. She found out who her mother was and decided that she had to find her. Zoey and the two boys decided to go on a mission to find Zoey’s mother. After searching they found clues which led Zoey to the cat lady, Mrs. Dupont. Everyone at the agency thought that Zoey was a corrupted operative because she knew about the terrible things which Mrs. Dupont did or wanted to do. The three best friends ended up finding proof that helped get Zoey get off the radar of all of her haters.
CHARACTERIZATION: Zoey was a 14 year old girl that grew up in the foster care system her whole life until she got taken to the Agency. She was a very independent young lady who thought she did not need help from anybody. She had red curly hair with very pale skin. Tristan was a 15 year old boy that was a operative in the special ops program. Him and Zoey met when Agent Barnes and Agent Vargas saved her life the night she left the foster home. He was a very muscular teen that knows that he is good looking. Zoey realized that she was getting feelings for Tristan and she had a thought he also had some feelings for her. Simon was a nerdy 14 year old. He knew everything there was to know about the legal and illegal mystics. He was scared about everything but he knew everything. He was very helpful throughout the whole story.
IMPACT of SETTING: The beginning of the story took place in a small town in the years 2000’s. Later in the story the characters were all at the Agency, which was in the middle of the woods. The reason was to keep it a secret place. Without the Agency the agents and operatives would not have survived.
THEMATIC CONNECTION: I felt like the theme in this story was if you have your mindset to do something, then do not listen to what people say. Achieve the goal that you have set for yourself. In the story Zoey set a goal to find her mom and she was not going to quit until she did. That was the type of attitude that I have for all of my goals in life. Whatever you set your mind to you will achieve.
RECOMMENDATION: I would recommend this book to anybody who loved a suspenseful science fiction book. It also has supernatural elements in it. I feel like the audience’s age should range from 12-18 years. It was a very easy simple read that did not have to much new vocabulary. I enjoyed this book a lot.
The book started out pretty strong and quickly pulled me in. But then it was kind of downhill from there. I found all the characters to be a bit bratty and entitled (especially when they broke serious laws, not just rules, that got them into serious danger, and later they brutally attacked a bunch of security guards) but somehow it all worked out and they were the heroes, when really, they all should have been thrown into juvie if not prosecuted as adults. It was pretty action-packed, though, which basically meant that I could just skim through sections and not miss anything important.
This would've been five stars but the dialogue or interaction between the characters could've been just a little better. It was worse in the beginning but flowed better as she met more people who seemed to have themselves put together.
Personally, the main girl mildly annoyed me at some points because her actions seemed immature and although she's fourteen, I don't think it should be that much of an excuse. I also wanted to choke the agents for never believing her, and the plot itself with having them not believe the fourteen-year-old orphan seemed a little overdone. And the intros to her back story of being an orphan and letting all the other characters know was a bit much (i.e the classroom, the bikers, the agents). I was fourteen once, and I'm pretty sure there weren't a lot of pre-teens who would voluntarily tell groups of people they just met that they're an orphan. But that's just me. I rarely rate books based on my preferences, but I feel that some of these things were also holes in the story, or things that the author could've worked more on.
Otherwise, the story was enjoyable and I'd recommend it to those who like action. There's a hint of a crush but it isn't a big thing, and Simon is crazy enough to get some smiles out of the reader. It was a fast and fun read.

The sevenths are a minority faction of the human race that have a seventh sense that allows them to detect alien beings on earth (mystics). This book follows Zoey, a 14 year old orphan, who has spent her childhood in an orphanage followed by several foster families. She has the seventh sense but has no idea why and knows of no-one else that also has it. We follow her as she is introduced to a world of agents, mystics and originals.
I liked the premise of the story and the supernatural seventh sense but found that the character was rushing headlong into one unsurvivable situation after another and a collection of injuries that were sustained were often forgotten by the next chapter. The adult characters are portrayed as idiots who disbelieve everything the main character says regardless of supporting evidence and witnesses. Forcing the main character to save the world despite them ...
I think this book is ideally suited to pre-teens who do not look too closely at the improbable situations and the reckless decision making that just works out in the end.

Zoey had been living from one foster home to another until she stumbled into a group of people with unique sight just like her, a group where she belonged. Zoey was a fast learner, and I loved how she was a badass, unlike the typical story we read where the main character would face failure and humiliation before the success.
I also loved her two best friends Tristan and Simon. Simon was funny, and he always entertains me. As for Tristan, his protectiveness over Zoey would probably turn into something else, but for now, since Zoey was just a fourteen years old teenager, it might take some time for the romance to start.
The storyline was engaging, and my favourite part was when Zoey's ventured outside the Hive in search of her mother. Her best friends wouldn't let her go alone, and instead of danger, they got allies. I can't wait to read the next book and immersed myself with the trio next adventure. Hopefully, she'll get closer in finding her mother and also her hidden power.
The story is about an orphan girl who is not normal as she can see monsters. She then becomes a part of a community that has more people like her who call themselves Agents. She undergoes through biasness and also makes 2 good friends. The battle between good and bad, superior and inferior goes on and in the end good wins.
The good thing about the book is that the author has a good descriptive sense, the way she describes the monsters and the 2 worlds is incredible.
The thing that I would prefer the author did different is that the storyline to be different, because it feels that she uses the same concept in all her book series (good over evil) just different worlds and settings.
The Seventh Sense was a little weird for me. I enjoyed the story, but the fact that the "management" never believes Zoey got old pretty quick. Its like they don't even bother to use common sense! Like I said, I enjoyed the book, but I'm up in the air about continuing to book two.
I like the different layers to this book I think deceptions and prejudices gave more of a real feel to the story. I do dislike the fact that because Zoey is an orphan any time she tells them what has happened she isn't believed like because of something she had no control over she isn't as good as others and can't be trusted.
It's a fun book for teens (filled with teen angst etc.) and I would have finished it (I got in about 50%) but, as any of you who read my reviews know, I read the last chapter to be sure the book isn't a continued story. Sadly, I waited until now and it is. Too bad. I won't deal with having to read more books to get a resolution to the tale. Sorry Ms. Richardson.
I don't really know how to rate this. I can't say that I really liked it, and yet I read it all through in one sitting. I went to choose it and grab something I wanted to read more and then... didn't. So... it is what it is.
I don’t like to give spoilers on the books that I read. I believe the blurb on the back is enough for you to decide if you will read the book or not. If you choose to read, enjoy!
I found the book entertaining but was written for very young children so it’s juvenile and frustrating for me as an adult. Everyone either hates her and out to get her or likes her and is her best friend.
Devoured in a night was incredibly hard to come to the end. Can not wait to read the next book in the series hopefully tonight. Little orphan Zoey always knew she was different. But it took almost took her death to find out why?
This was a fast-paced action adventure. There was enough action and character development to keep the reader engaged. The story moved quickly and keep the concept interesting.
The author has created an interesting world and adventure with a great female lead and characters. I am looking forward to reading more in this series.
Mystics #1: The Seventh Sense is an entertaining read, probably best suited for 12-14 year olds. It’s a bit rough around the edges and could use some better editing, but the story will appeal to kids. The main character, Zoey, is sympathetic and a strong lead, and Simon the sidekick provides a lot of comic relief when the action gets tense. And there’s lots of action—fighting monsters, escaping the bad guys, traveling through mirrors and standing up to bullies.
The monsters are probably the most imaginative part of this series. Most monsters are out for blood—and quite a bit is spilled in this story—but there are some good ones too, and some pretty funny ones. The story is a mixture of tense action intersperse with silliness (Simon is especially good at breaking the tension with a goofy joke). There’s a hint of romance too, between Zoey and the handsome Tristan, although the romance in its beginning stages, and I’m sure Kim Richardson will expound on this in the sequels.
While the story could use some work to really polish it, I think both boys and girls will find this a fun, exciting read. Girls will relate to the strong main female character, boys will enjoy Simon’s quirkiness and Tristan’s bravado, and all will enjoy the monsters and action.
