Kaguya is the vice president of their prestigious academy’s student council and she's in love with, Miyuki, the president, and he with her! BUT both are well aware that in love there is always a winner... and neither wants to be the "loser!" As both are geniuses and quite proud they spend each day laying in wait for an opportunity to get the other to confess without losing face... only Chika, their secretary and Ishigami, their treasurer, seem ready to innocently mess up their careful machinations.

I absolutely fell in love with the newest volume of the Kaguya-sama: Love Is War series! This is seriously the best volume so far... What does it have?! Humor, tension, romance, competition, friendship and HUMOR, did I say humor yet?!

We've now met, Chika and Ishigami who work with Kaguya and Miyuki on the student council. As well as Ai, Kaguya's super secret assistant! Just with these added personalities the story around Love is War has gelled into a super fun power play with the stakes being higher and higher each time one of our leads make a play for the other... And now, dun, dun, dun we have another, unexpected player, Miyuki's sister, who seems to have unexpected emotions toward a particular character?! I hope she appears again as I believe she can add all sorts of tension for Miyuki...

Up until this volume the plot has been vignettes that are self contained for the most part... but with Kaguya-sama Love Is War vol 4 we get arcs that cross chapters!! Aiiiiii this is what I've been secretly waiting for... And Aka Akasaka, the mangaka doesn't pull any punches! We see a side of Chika that is rather unexpected and explains why she is on the student council with our ruthless Kaguya and driven Miyuki. We also see Ishigami take some initiative and piss off Chika (which is really very cute since he is such a cowardly person!) And Ai helps Miyuki get into a compromising situation with Kaguya with super funny results...! It's plain hilarious and I snort and giggle through each volume with this one being no exception...

I just totally love Kaguya and Miyuki. I love that we get to see both of their POVs, that they are so similar it hurts but also different in intriguing ways. In this volume Miyuki tries to go against his nature and be mean to Kaguya and it results in some really hilarious moments between these two... BECAUSE we get to see both of their sides. It really characterizes the differences between men an women and highlights why two people are attracted to one another and yet thwart their own desires... It's too, too cute and makes for the best comedy!

I love the super modern covers on this series and need them for my shelf just so I can stare at them (and I frankly love character focused covers like these!) but I also love the art style inside as well. It isn't your typical boy's or girl's art style and so takes some adjustment (depending on your sex) but I think that is what makes it so special!! The art ADDS to the comedy... This is all about Kaguya and Miyuki's internal ravings contrasted to their driven, focused, competitive external faces... and the art plays that gag to excellent effect! A manga really works when the art is perfectly balanced to the world and story and Kaguya-sama Love Is War vol 4 shows that that balance is spot on.

Kaguya-sama Love Is War vol 4 is the best volume yet in what is a tense, romantic, competitive, friendship filled and HUMOROUS series, it uses delayed gratification to keep us on the edge of our seats as two stubborn geniuses struggle to win each other's love!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Authenticity
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tension
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Plot
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Art

Ch 34, Pg 18
(Read images right to left, and hover over images for sources [not compatible on mobile])

Overall this was by faaaaaarr the least funny volume. But, considering how funny these volumes usually are, that's still not really bad at all. Though, I did read it at night while my family was sleeping, so there might have been some influence there for me not to laugh so as to not wake them. I'm not really sure about that though because there still were parts that made me laugh out loud nonetheless.

Ch 31, Pg 6

Although I wasn't laughing as much during this volume, it was still really enjoyable to read because of how attached I am to the characters at this point. This volume also finally started incorporating multiple longer plotlines that spanned multiple chapters, so that was fun. It only took them 30 chapters to finally get an overarching plot going on... (sarcasm). So rather than being excited to see what new gags they're going to come up with, I'm excited about how the storyline is going to finally progress.

Ch 31, Pg 11
(I felt this soo hard with track and field, back when I was the best sprinter at my middle school.)

So far I've been reading this series for the laughs, but this volume made me actually start caring about the romance as well. This is officially labeled as a romantic comedy, but up until this point I completely disregarded the "romantic" part and was completely engrossed in the "comedy" aspect, as is also evident in how I labeled it in my review of volume one. There were some cute moments in this volume, and it makes me really want to cheer for Kaguya and "S" dude to get together!!! (It's been four volumes and I still can't remember his name... Wait, it's Shirogane!! I think? I'm trying... OTL) They obviously won't get together until the end of the series though, because that'll defeat the whole point of the series when they do. That's probably not going to come for a looooong loooooong time though.

I couldn't rate this on a laughs scale like I did for the last volume because... Well, as I've already explained that wouldn't be accurate. So once again, I am stuck. Four or five stars? I've always said that if you have to contemplate it, then it's probably not a five. But then my problem lies with the fact that I feel like this is potentially one of my favourite manga, and so I should give it a five for that. I think I'm just going to keep this at four stars for now... The next volume will have the opportunity to provide the finishing blow to push this to five stars if it is up to the task. Though I that is also what I said about volume three, so who knows.

Ch 37, Pg 7

This is a very good manga series, I would highly recommend it. I don't know why I keep saying this at the end of these reviews though, because if you hadn't already started reading this series I don't know why you'd be reading this. Nonetheless, it is true, so I will say it. :)

Please consider giving this review a "Like" if you've made it this far, it helps me out a lot! And follow me if you want more!

Book: Kaguya-sama: Love is War, Vol. 4
Author: Aka Akasaka
Rating: 4 Out of 5 Stars

I will say it again. I am having a great time with this series and I don’t know why. I think that it’s giving me that escape that I want and need. Sometimes you just need a series that puts you in a good mood and I am finding that here.

The artwork and the overall story is simple. We are following these two characters who don’t want to acknowledge that they have feelings for each other. They go through these battles, in which they have to deny how they truly feel for each other. We see their inner thoughts and how their actions are a reflection of these thoughts and actions. I find that it works well. The artwork also does an amazing job at showing us how their characters think and feel.

We are also getting to meet new characters. I think I like this, but I’m not sure. There were times in the other volumes that I felt that having such a small cast did not work. I felt that we needed something to expand the story and get it to go in the direction that we need. However, now that we have the somewhat of a larger cast, I don’t know. Now, there are only four or five characters. I think that as the story goes on, I will grow to be a lot more fond of the new editions.

I will admit that I didn’t find the battles as entertaining in this volume as I have in other volumes. Don’t get me wrong, it was still good, but there was something missing to put this over the edge. There were times that it felt like the author was trying a little bit too hard. However, there is still enough to keep me going and keep me engaged.

Overall, I am still having a great time with this series and I can’t wait to keep on going.

This volume was perhaps a let-down compared to other volumes, as it felt dragged out. Mostly, the storyline goes in a simple way - either Kaguya or Miyuki sends the opening volley and one of them or neither of them wins in the end. The best part of this is that them being at odds and yet being attracted to each other is the whole basis of their complicated relationship. Other than that, there is Miyuki's specific insecurities played out, and Kaguya's utter naivete at informal decorum.

But, in this one, it felt like it stalled to let an exaggerated version of 'the morning after' play out, when Kaguya gets sick and Miyuki vists her, and in her delirious state she makes him sleep over. After that, again a couple of chapters are wasted on them discussing things with their friends and getting advice and finally reconciling and getting back to normal. Granted, some day their romance has to move forward in a way, but I didn't like the specific circumstances of the encounter. Ai deliberately leaving Miyuki with an unconscious Kaguya and warning him (playfully) not to do anything seems a little too assault-y? I know it is a regular nosebleed trope but god it has to stop sometime. And then there is Ishigami, who is embracing his role as an incel *eyeroll* and giving some bad advice to Miyuki regarding the situation, which is terrible however you look at it.

The one good arc was the introduction of Miyuki's younger sister, who Kaguya wants to impress to get an in with Miyuki's family (again, very shady, Kaguya!) but finds out that Chika and Ishigami have more in common with her. Nevertheless, it does hint at his sister also having a crush on Kaguya, and I want to see how it plays out in future volumes.

A bit too much Fujiwara, who gets more annoying by the page, but otherwise this is consistently delightful.

As usual there were a few "battles" I liked a whole lot more than others, but the series is still enjoyable and I think I'm mostly satisfied with the rate at which new characters come onto the scene. There were a couple of laugh out loud moments in this volume that makes me feel it was more of a 3.5 than 3. Oh and a couple of especially cute moments!

My itch for reading spooky/creepy etc tales is getting harder to ignore so I might slow down on reading the rest of this series in favor of those, but hopefully maintain some kind of balance.

~4 Stars

There are a few episodic chapters in this volume still—and really, all of them have very singular plots—but then the story expands to continuous plots. Firstly, we see Chika trying to play a game, and then she's tricked into teaching Shirogane again, much to her detriment. But then a storm mess-up leads into Kaguya getting sick, and then we get to see her unguarded for the first time. Shirogane visits her, and for the first time, she's sweet and vulnerable. She vaguely remembers what happened when he visited, which leads to her wondering if he did anything compromising to her—and she's really more upset that he didn't.
After all of that, Kaguya gets to meet Shirogane's little sister. And finally, it looks like we'll be getting a vacation plot line in the next one. I can only imagine there'll be more crazy thoughts there.
This series has really grown on me, and now I just enjoy it so much. It's so ridiculous, in such a sweet way.

This is my favorite volume so far.

We get some really great moments. A moment where Kaguya wants to give a lift for Miyuki since it's raining but refuses to say it in fear it might show she likes him. So instead she waits outside in the rain for him and then gets sick. So he goes to visit her when she's sick. Something hot and spicy might happen! We also get some funny as hell moments with my favorite loser, Tsubasa, as he fears for his life once more.

This is a must read series at this point for light hearted, yet cute moments, with a ton of heart.

In this volume, we're introduced to Kei, Shirogane's sister!

We also get to see a glimpse of how cute Shinomiya can be when she's sick. I loved that our sleep-deprived Shirogane immediately fell asleep beside her and that led to a miscommunication between him and Shinomiya which lasted 2 chapters in this volume. The cake chapter and the indirect kiss chapter was a great way for them to makeup.

Basic TLDR: I really enjoyed reading this. It pays off to have read previous volumes, but doesn't feel necessary in order to enjoy this one. I would certainly recommend this to a friend to read if they were looking for something.

Longer More Specific Review: The idea by this point is pretty simple. You somewhat understand each character to at this point if you have read the previous 3 volumes. I honestly thought the last volume was really good for building the characters, seeming somewhat believable (in the contents of the world/environment that the characters are in), and made me laugh a lot and kept me reading. I continuously have been checking out these manga as something fun to do on the side while I am busy with other projects, but find myself glued to them and reading them within a matter of a few days due to me being so interested in what will happen to our characters. I genuinely find myself concerned for the characters and curious about what will happen in the story I am reading. This volume is no exception.
The best chapters for this one in my opinion are 32, 34, and 40. However, I honestly enjoyed all of the chapters in this volume. There is one chapter that in my opinion stretches a bit in terms of "reality." But I feel the set up to it make it more believable and nothing extreme enough happens, but rather just a bit of a stretch. The other chapters are also all spot on. The characters do a good job at interacting with each other and challenging each other while still acting within the frame that their character should behave.
All this said, I could see some not enjoying this series. The characters can seem a bit much, or irritating, or I also have seen some complain about the art style (although this is my first manga series so I cannot truly judge it fairly). I do personally think the art style could be slightly improved in a few scenes, but overall it is pretty good and compliments the comedy. I would say if you enjoyed the first or second volume, you will definitely like this one. If you thought the first or second were okay, give the third and fourth a try and see how you feel. If you didn't really like volume 1 or 2, I doubt you will enjoy volumes 3 and 4. But you never know. Overall, I am really enjoying this series and look forward to the next volume.

Honestly, I may need to change my rating system at this rate or my recommended list will become overloaded with manga from this series.
(Current System:
5 Stars -> Would recommend the book/or read it again in my own time.
4 Stars -> Enjoyed it, but probably would only recommend it to someone specifically interested in the genre.
3 Stars -> Liked it, but would not recommend it to someone.
2 Stars -> Read it, but did not really enjoy it.
1 Stars -> Hated it.

It's a decent volume. Most of the battles are more strung together this time, with things that happened in previous battles being referenced or impacting behaviors in the next battle, so it feels more like a traditional ongoing manga in that respect than the more individual chapter focus.

Some of the battles include "Magazine advice", "the go home together in the rain" chapter, "visit to the house to drop off homework" chapter, the "I have a flaw I need help with" chapter, "visit from a mysterious underclassman" chapter, and "Making up advice" chapter. As expected, a lot of these don't go the typical way other manga would with them because our heroes are stubborn.

The cover features a character that only really features in one small story this time. I won't spoil who they are, but they aren't a rival or anything like that.

At times it feels like our main characters are getting closer, and then things reset to more status quo. I just don't know how long they can string together this plot thread before fans get exasperated. The set-up, punchline nature of jokes can only go so far for me at least.

Speculation on how they could develop this to stave off boredom:

We have a large cast, but they seem to serve more for comedy, and they don't really have their own aspirations or relationships they're developing on display much here. You wonder if they can shift the focus onto having Kaguy x Shinomiya competing with other couples or something later, the game of love after you've fallen in love, keeping up with the advancement (or not) of their friends' ships. That could be fun, but this is just projecting out with my own personal interests. We'll see what they do down the line, and how long they can keep these two apart officially in the war of love.

While this was just as enjoyable as the last volume, I wanted to point out that there were two different kinds of errors through the English translation (one, a spelling error. Yet the second one I'm not sure if it falls on the translators. There was mention of a student council meeting that had a sit-in very similar to Kashiwagi, who was originally mentioned as a daughter of a boat company president -?-, yet listed in this volume as something other).
But my picky tastes aside, I felt so bad for Ishigami as I had since I was first introduced to his character. I want to support him, yet he can dig his own grave at times pretty deep.
Definitely recommend this series at this point!

It's odd, because some series I will give the updates one each mini episode within the book, but I find this one better to just sit back and read. This does however leave my reviews seemly lighter on details and more on emotional feelings upon finishing them. The theme of the book continues strong with some stories being more entertaining than others. I will say that the love test was my favorite story within the pages of this fourth volume. The story seems to have such a natural flow one could mistake the great work that Aka Akasaka is putting in to make this book feel so effortlessly fun.
