You don’t know me, but you do know me. I’m your neighborhood hot mess single mom, doing my best to keep my head above water while running my little slice of heaven and keeping my youngest from shoving marbles up his nose, which is exactly what he’s doing the first time Levi Wilson, pop star god, world’s sexiest man, and my all-time number one celebrity obsession, walks into my bookstore.
Related: I’m writing this from beyond the grave, because I’ve died of mortification and am now residing in an alternate universe.
I have to be.
Because Levi Wilson came back.
And we had a moment.
Like, a moment moment. The kind that makes me remember that adult pleasure isn’t all about hoping the lock holds in the bathroom so your kids don’t interrupt on the rare occasion you feel like taking an extra-long mommy-time shower.
So when he proposes a no-strings fling?
Count. Me. In.
Thrill of a lifetime, right?
Surely, nothing will go wrong…
The Hot Mess and the Heartthrob is a rockin’ fun, sexy romantic comedy featuring a celebrity panty-melter who doesn’t know what he’s been missing, a sassy single mom hanging on by a string, three adorable children who would never burst in on a woman when she’s on a toilet (ha!), and shameless ovary-busting moments between a guy who never thought he’d be a dad and a family who thought they got along just fine without him. It stands alone and comes complete with a happily-ever-after (though you’d never go wrong to read the other Bro Code series books first).
Before she became a USA Today and #1 Amazon bestselling romantic comedy author, she was a young military spouse who got into writing as self-therapy. That happened around the time she discovered reading romance novels, and the two eventually merged into a career. Today, she has more than 30 knee-slapping Pippa Grant titles and nine published under the name Jamie Farrell.
When she’s not writing romantic comedies, she’s fumbling through being a mom, wife, and mountain woman, and sometimes tries to find hobbies. Her crowning achievement? Having impeccable timing for telling stories that will make people snort beverages out of their noses. Consider yourself warned.
Author update: Levi and Ingrid get here in three days! And they have a cover!! Isn't it gorgeous?!
Author update: FIVE MORE DAYS!! The Hot Mess and the Heartthrob arrives on January 7, and I cannot WAIT! This book is dedicated to every woman who's ever felt like she's at the end of her rope. It was everything I needed to write to close out 2020, and I hope it brings you as much joy as it brought me. Weeks after finishing, I still don't want to part with Levi and Ingrid. I love them so much!!
Author update: Did someone say LEVI WILSON?!?! That's right - the tight-pants pop star is getting a book of his own, and I love it so much!! I can't wait for THE HOT MESS AND THE HEARTTHROB to be out in the world! Coming early 2021... More details soon!
I really like this book. I was not expecting to like it. So I do not have high expectation. The humor is very funny. Espcially describing a single mom life.
I like the story. It is simple. A rock star falls in love with single mom, bookshop owner. The 3 children are adorable. The chemistry is sizzling hot. The banter is fun and alive.
Overall this is a wonderful book to read during lockdown.
With a nod or two to our favorite raccoon, this book is chock full of cameos from many characters who already have a special place in our hearts. Between Thrusters hockey, Fireballs baseball and Bro Code band members, there's no telling who might show up. But I’m pretty sure the introduction of Skippy the apartment-squatting squirrel is enough to keep us all on our toes. Then there's Ingrid and, well, her life in general.
Ingrid Scott is, indeed, one hot mess. As a bookstore owner and single parent of three lively children, life has taken her a far away from the precise, ordered military existence she once knew.
To say her kids, Piper, Zoe, and Hudson, are lively is an understatement. Each one is a handful, and Ingrid only has two hands, bless her heart. Her days are full of chauffeuring kids from school to multiple extra-curricular activities, fishing foreign objects out of her four-year-old's nose, and cleaning up the latest disaster, while being there for other frazzled mothers who come to her bookstore for a moment’s peace and moral support. Very little in her life is orderly, but Ingrid is selfless, down to earth, charming, and oh so relatable. She's every mom who's ever been at her wit's end.
This book has all the delightful, madcap hilarity and tomfoolery we've come to expect from this talented wordsmith but with an extra poignant sweetness that squeezes the heart in the most exquisite way. And Levi Wilson? Gah! The man is sweetness overload!
Sure, he may be the hottest ticket in pop rock music, but his single mother raised a man with a terrific sense of humor and an amazing heart whose most valued commodity is his family and friends. I’m not sure which Levi I swooned over the most – the man who is ridiculously adorable with Ingrid's kids or the Levi who could laugh at the outrageous interruptions that kept a highly anticipated liftoff burning on the launch pad. That, my reader friend, may just be the ultimate swoon. When you can find a man who makes you laugh and laughs with you when things around you are falling apart, that's a treasure more precious than gold.
Most books for me are a one and done. I may adore the characters while I’m reading, but many leave my mind once I’m immersed in the next book. Ingrid and Levi, however, kicked me out of bed at 4 AM, TYVM, insisting I write my review NOW, telling me what I needed to say about them. So, Levi and Ingrid, I hope I do you justice. One thing is certain, I’ll always think of you two whenever a rubber chicken pops up. And, P.S., Levi, should the Bro Code ever get back together, be sure to add some squirrel-dance moves to your repertoire.
Of course this book comes with the requisite warning about the danger of reading it in public and the risk of spontaneous barks of laughter accompanied by inelegant snorts. But then there really needs to be a blanket warning for anything penned by this crafty, clever lady.
So settle in for a hilarious, heartwarming, epically entertaining time with Levi, Ingrid and the kids But first, you may want to warn your family, your friends, your neighbors and the Jehovah's Witnesses that to interrupt you is to risk bodily harm. Then, kick back and enjoy the heck out of your escape to Cooper Valley!
2020 has been a hell of a year. After this year, we all deserve something nice. Enter Pippa Grant to start us off in 2021 with a new story that gives us all the feels, as well as all the laughs.
If you haven't been introduced to Pippa Grant's work, you're missing out and I highly suggest you start rectifying that situation - here's the proper story timeline reading order (you'll thank me, I promise).
I really thought my go-to genre was paranormal romance, but after I had some down time during my recovery from surgery in March, I discovered the wonderful world of romantic comedies, thanks to Pippa and a delightfully funny love story about a tweet gone awry.
After devouring America's Geekheart (yes, Beck Ryder IS my ultimate Book Boyfriend, even though he doesn't know it), I quickly had to backtrack and find the correct reading order and start immediately immersing myself in the Pippaverse. Luckily, this meant I got to read Beck and Sarah's story all over again since the suggested series reading order placed it at book number three, as well as having 13 new books to read. It also meant I came in on the tail end of the series, just as two more books were being added, and seriously curbed the despair I felt as my mind frantically raced with the thought of, "What do I read now while I'm waiting for the next book?"
Signing up for every Pippa Grant social media fan group I could also brought me the opportunity to take part in reviewing this latest installment, The Hot Mess and the Heartthrob, as part of the new release campaign from Give Me Books.
As an aspiring author who will most likely self-publish, reviewing books published independently is something I happily support (plus, hello! I get to read the book before it's released!), especially authors that continue giving fans like myself tiny glimpses into the lives of our favorite characters after they've gotten their Happily Ever After.
Now that I've gotten my hands on Levi Wilson's story, which I received at 3 a.m. on Sunday and immediately read through all the way to the end in less than 2 hours, I am struggling with writing this review because there are so many opportunities for spoilers, and I refuse to spoil this book for you! I will share with you the excerpt, however:
"You don’t know me, but you do know me.

For those who are new to the Pippaverse, I will say that I never much paid attention to what Levi was doing in the other books. It's not that Levi wasn't an interesting character, it's just that my focus was more on the main characters of that particular book (and whatever appearance Beck made in the other books, obviously). Levi was always there in the periphery, but not as demanding of my attention as say Cooper Rock (still waiting on this story, Pippa!) or even the mysterious Davis Remington, whose teeny tiny appearances made me wonder what his story actually is.
Levi's story was a complete and wonderful surprise to me. He caught me off guard with his antics and his reactions to all that happens to and around him, and I felt for him through the introspective transformation he experiences regarding his upbringing and the state of his relationships. The character development for both of the main characters, and even the further developments of characters we already know and love within the Pippaverse, felt like a natural progression to me as the reader. We get the honor of watching this heartwarming love story unfold, laughing and crying and cringing right along with the characters.
Those familiar with Pippa's writing style and humor will be aware that they will most likely laugh so hard they could seriously harm themselves if they are eating or drinking anything whilst reading. I warn all of you newbies to never attempt this, even if you sign up for the Pipster Report, because you can totally have a near death experience while reading the weekly newsletter and eating/drinking at the same time (thanks a lot, Zeus).
The Hot Mess and the Heartthrob is no exception to the eating/drinking rule, especially given that our heroine is a single mom of three children who give hefty weight to the old adage "Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong", and Levi is no stranger to finding himself in the oddest of situations right along with the kids and their horrifyingly embarrassed mother. This love story is more than just a love story though; it's also a heart-twisting tale of 3 adorable, smart and vibrantly written kiddos that have a second chance at having the father they deserve.
I can't say too much more about the book, because there are so many little humorous nuggets of Pippa gold sprinkled throughout and I refuse to spoil any of these discoveries for you.
As familiar as I am with what Pippa Grant does with her stories, and what her stories in turn do for my heart and soul, The Hot Mess and the Heartthrob still genuinely surprised and delighted me; it had me laughing and tearing up; and most of all, it brought me back to a positive space during all this awfully depressing reality we've experienced over the last year - in this book, good people actually have good things happen to them - and even the the hottest of messes can find true love in the most unexpected circumstances. Levi and Ingrid give hope to some of the hopeless romantic readers out there who are searching for their own forever.
Let's face it - after the year we've had, we deserved a story that left us with all the feels and a bonus epilogue that made us ugly cry all the happy tears.
An advanced reader's copy of "The Hot Mess and the Heartthrob" was provided by Give Me Books as part of the promotional campaign for the book's release, however all opinions are 100% mine and accurately reflect how the story made me feel.
This is fourth in a series and the previous characters aren't so much present as they are enmeshed. So you'll probably benefit by reading the others first. Also, I can tell that others from The Copper Valley Thrusters make an important-ish appearance. I didn't feel too left out not having read those, but maybe it'd be better as well? Yeah, Grant likes bringing in other characters a lot.
This turned out better than I expected, and my expectations weren't exactly low. I've liked the previous two in this series and felt like I knew what to expect. And sure enough, we have the whacky personality. The wish-fulfillment that couldn't actually work in the real world, but fits itself so well that I don't care. And the kids who are depicted with all their warts highlighted enough for me to be grateful I'm done with raising any.
It was cruising to a solid four stars with possible bonus for making me laugh because Levi is hilarious and Ingrid rolls with everything with such resigned grace. And then it surprised me. In a great way. And I'm just astonished with the difference this one little bit made for me.
The thing is, you can see the dark moment coming from quite a bit away. Ingrid is done with absentee partners who breeze in and out of her life at their convenience, disrupting all of her routines, both parental and personal. And Grant makes you feel that in all the ways. So you know that something has to change if they're to be together because of the demands on Levi's time and attention.
And sure enough, my heart broke a bit
This was such a better answer because Grant infuses it with heart and love and made it real in all the important ways. And I love that so much. Because their love is made of compromise and trust and teamwork and sharing. So I finished the story in one of those enraptured fugues that I find so satisfying.
So this is five stars and I thoroughly enjoyed this story. Note that the whack is dialed up to eleven, as with the others in the series. So if those were a burden, this one is likely worse. But for me, it was awesome and I kind of hope there's more. One more band member, but he's been so enigmatic that I'm not sure I if I want it or not...
A note about Steamy: There are four or five explicit sex scenes, though the first couple are on the light side. So this is edging into the higher end of my steam tolerance. They worked well-enough with the story, though you have to dial back the fantasy-romance part to see how well-designed they are to highlight the character arcs involved.
This book had me rolling on the floor the entire time. I absolutely loved Ingrid and her kids! And don't get me started on Levi and his Bro Code guys...this was sweet, funny, and definitely had that awww factor!
I wanted to leave one star because this was so boring - I kept thinking ‘when is the story going to start?’. By chapter 8 I was so fed up with the in your face, over the top attempts to be funny I had had enough. This looks like it could have been good with some serious editing. Two lines of witty banter are brilliant - 2 pages not so much. None of it sounded authentic. For example - the kids. It was as if the writer had gathered together 20 years of odd childhood behaviour and events and compacted them into a tiny slice of Ingrid’s life. Marbles in the nose, escaped squirrels, distraction techniques. It wasn’t funny just tedious. For example the text messages - supposedly witty exchanges that seemed to go on for pages! The author has clearly never understood that ‘less is more’ especially when it comes to writing a rom-com. Everything was just too much, too long, trying too hard. I wanted to read this book. I really wanted to like it. I just got bored and couldn’t be bothered to finish it.So I skim read to the end and focussed solely on Ingrid and Levi.
I loved Levi and Ingrid - all the other people were boring and superfluous. I didn’t want to read about them or the kids or the utterly bizarre and manufactured things that happened to Ingrid . I wanted Levi and Ingrid and I was so fed up with skimming through the padding to get to the core. Such a shame because clearly this writer can write well - but this is just not my cup of tea! 2.5 stars
There was not one thing I didn’t absolutely adore about this book! Ingrid is so perfectly you human while still being a super mom you can’t not cheer for her. Levi was full-on swoon-worthy but I think my favorite wasn’t that he came in and “saved the day”. Nope, in pure Pippaverse fashion he brought a whole flipping village to help get his happily ever after!! 5 insane squirrels for this book 🐿🐿🐿🐿🐿
Love is messy! There’s no way a pop star is going to be struck dumb by a hot mess of a single mom, right? Welcome to Pippa Grant’s world, where the magic happens. Levi and Ingrid are perfect together and I love them!
Do you remember your first boyband concert? Remember when they were a thing? Well here’s the thing. The guys in those boy bands grow up and become men. We though, we don’t think like that. In our minds as Rod Stewart sang they are, Forever Young. Many times they conjure up great memories for us. Take us back to a time that brings a smile to our face and gave us hope of what could be. Often the bands break up and go their separate ways. One becomes a businessman, a correspondent, host of a tv show. Then there’s one breakout singer that ends up with a gigantic solo career. The scene I have put before you is very much a part of this story but it is so much more!
Levi, former band member of BroCode, handsome, sexy, voice of a rockstar god. Has no intention of ever settling down. Although one night several year ago at one of his concerts someone became his muse and he never got to even talk to her but he never forgot. Now he needs to go find inspiration again. Then someone so far out of his league catches his eye and for all the wrong reasons he can’t shake this feeling.
Ingrid, single mom of three, beautiful in the most natural of ways but her life looking at it from an outsiders view is anything you would describe as beautiful. She is most unlikely to capture anyone’s attention, or so she thinks. Getting 30 minutes of alone time would be Nirvana for her. She is on constant overload but in her heart she wouldn’t change it.
We all have our life outline that we plan for years, our GPS our Google Maps as it were. Sometimes it only takes a moment for someone or something to upset those long held plans, to throw us off course and change our direction. Do you change course and see where it leads. What new scenery pops up? Or do you get back on course and follow the most direct route? The real questions are how far are you willing to go to feel fulfilled? How stringent are you to hold on to your beliefs? What could make you change? Do priorities change? These are just some of the issues (and I do mean some there are so many more) that headline this beautiful romcom. Pippa Grant has brought us a book with her unique style that will make you laugh, melt your heart, having you tearing up, thinking of life perspective from other points of view and take your heat index way up.
If you’ve read other books by this author you will be happy to know that you will meet up with several of your favorite characters and new ones that just capture your heart. If you’re a mom you will at times feel like parts of this are your life or have been. You will definitely identify with many aspects of this adorable book. Don’t worry if you haven’t read the other books by Pippa. This is is a standalone but you will go back and want to read her other books.
This book will take hold of your heart in all ways imaginable. It will have your crying, laughing and sighing right up to the end. It’s a story you don’t want to see end. What a great way to start off my new year!
4.5 stars - A funny, feel-good read that also packed an emotional punch. Loved it!!
"He could have the world. Yet he's gazing at me like in this moment, I am his world."
Ingrid Scott is a hot-mess mother of three busy, lively kids and runs the bookstore in Copper Valley. Her schedule is tight with very little downtime for herself, let alone a potential relationship. She's been let down plenty of times before by her ex, so she relies as much on herself as possible to give her kids the best life that she can, where they know they are loved and wanted. When she meets one of the music world's biggest superstars and he seems interested in her, she can't quite believe that it could possibly be true.
"She's everything I didn't know I was missing."
Levi Wilson is a local boy made good. With all his globe-trotting success, he's never forgotten his roots because his family and close friends keep him grounded. His soul is kind and good, and his heart is big. Years ago, a face in the crowd changed his life, and when he hides out in the local bookstore, his life is about to change again.
"Heat rockets through my body, the electric current between us pulsing so hard, the shock that comes when we part will be unbearable."
This was such a funny read. OMG! Ingrid's kids were a handful. Honestly, I would have run away screaming! LOL. She's got backbone and a deep-well of love for those children. Their antics were hilarious, adorable and seriously hair-pulling! LOL. Levi was pretty swoonworthy. I loved how much he desired her and how beautiful he thought she was, even when she wasn't looking her best. Their attraction had some major zing! I loved how much he wanted to help her and understood what she dealt with daily. He had such a healthy appreciation for all her struggles and her successes. I adored his admiration for her and I loved how taken he was with her kids. I liked that he wasn't pushy or got annoyed at how little time Ingrid could devote to him, and honest to God, he melted my heart when he showed her how present he could be in her life, without actually having to be there in person. Thoroughly recommend for some welcome feel-good vibes!
Getting lost in your own hometown really puts your life into perspective. Levi finds much more than a hidey hole in a bookstore with Ingrid and her wonderfully energetic life. As a mom of three children, I felt a bone deep connection with Ingrid. Even in the most hilarious situations I could empathize with how exhausted and utterly overwhelmed she was on a daily basis. On top of it all, Levi Wilson, Bro Code heartthrob, wants to spend time with you? No way. I'd had my doubts too. She's a single mom doing it ALL alone; however, not once did he pity her. That won him over in my book, along with picturing him in those tight white pants, lol. A gamut of emotions ran throughout this story and I loved every minute. Some of my favorite parts included various characters from Pippa's other series, anything that came out of Hudson's mouth (not nose), and a hyperactive, domesticated squirrel. A must read in the Bro Code series. (less)

This one was fun to read. Ingrid is a bit of a hot mess, but she embraces it, in fact uses it as part of her marketing strategy at her store. But honestly as a single mother with 3 kids ages 4-10, who owns her own business with little support system, she's doing great! Her kids know she loves them, her business is growing. She does what she can when she can and the rest will either wait or she'll get to it eventually.
I loved how smitten Levi was with her, how he remembered an encounter for years ago and how it meant so much to him. It was fun to see Levi not see Ingrid as a hot mess, but someone who would fit in with his crazy family. The things that he witnesses with Ingrid and her kids doesn't seem that odd to him, in fact he and Hudson could have been the same child, just years apart.
I really loved how Levi showed Ingrid he cared about her and wanted something real when she tried to break off things. Sure he could have bought her everything, but instead he gave her and the kids exactly what they needed and most importantly he proved that even though he wasn't there he could still be there.
The ending to this one was great, loved seeing them all live happy.
Well played Pippa. She’s only gone and done it again! Our heroine, Ingrid, sees herself as a hot mess, when in (virtual) reality she’s one of the most put together, organised, selfless people in Copper Valley. Yes, ok she walks around with goldfish in her hair, other foodstuffs smeared about her person and invariably wears odd socks, but she’s still wonder woman with all that she achieves. Then to add to this brilliance is the one and only Levi Wilson, pop star extraordinaire. Who recognises the single mom syndrome from his own life circumstances. Ingrid brings with her 3 children who help to show Levi what he didn’t know he was missing. Oh ... and there’s a squirrel who would give Loki a run for his money, which is a great segue into Ares drops into this story along with some of Pippa’s other fantabulous characters.
You ever have one of those days where you think to yourself "Calgon take me away!" That is basically Ingrid's life. She doesn't hate it, she's just a single mom of 3 kids and feels overwhelmed.
Enter Levi Wilson. He's a rock star heart throb, who took a wrong turn and somehow ended up in Ingrid's bookstore. When he sees her face, he remembers her being at his concert years ago and it changed his life. Plus he is intrigued by her.
In a series of hilarious flirtations, texts and events, you will find yourself laughing until you cry. Add to the mix characters from previous books, and you've got a winning combination of madness and mayhem!
Best of all, you've got yourself one of Pippa Grant's swooniest characters. I actually sighed.
Such a great story! OMG I love Ms. Grant's style, I laughed SO hard I snorted more than once. Several of the Ingrid 'hot mess' tales felt very ripped from the headlines of my own life! This author doesn't just give us the fantasy of Levi the pop star, she gives us the realness of the busy single mom spread so thin she doesn't have time to fantasize about the life of said pop star. I love how humble and down to earth Levi is. I can't get enough of the squirrel, I kind of want to see if any of the neighborhood squirrels want to come in, but thats probably not advisable. I doubt the locals will be as domesticated as the ones in the Pippaverse! And the kids were just the icing on the cake! This author just knows how to find just the right balance of melt your heart sweetness with the panty melting HOTNESS. Can't wait for more from her in 2021!
I can always count on a Pippa Grant book to bring a smile to my face, and she most certainly did with this one. The Hot Mess and the Heartthrob is full of laughs for sure, but it’s also so dang heartwarming and sweet (with just enough spice) and just absolutely perfect. I think every mom can find a bit of themselves in Ingrid. Her kids are a riot, and the pet hijinks had me laughing out loud. My favorite, though, is Levi. Has there ever been a more perfectly swoony hero in mom-land? I think not. Permanent book boyfriend hall-of-famer for sure. An absolutely hilarious rom-com with a cast of unforgettable characters that will leave you with a big smile permanently on your face. A must read, and exactly what I was craving right now.
I felt so seen in this book; I am the Hot Mess Mom! It was full of laughter and absolute heart, and I expect nothing less from Pippa. She really captured the chaos of motherhood with reality sprinkled with humor. It was this honest look at parenthood that pushed it to 5 stars for me.
Ingrid and Levi's love story was an adventure from start to finish - from secret squirrels to rubber chickens, glitter crafts to best friends who tell it like it is. Their story is one to remember. (I'm still giggling every time I think about the bonus epilogue and it's been 1.5 hours since I finished it!)
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go read it again! I have a feeling this is going to be a regularly re-visited adventure for me.
All aboard the hot mess express!!!! This story was nothing like what I was expecting. Ingrid is like a super mom and I'm seriously in awe of her. She's the fiercest of fierce and I want to be half as accomplished as she is (even though she never seemed to think so). I had this thought in my head about the kind of guy Levi would be- the former boy bander player who's smooth and charming... he is charming but he's sweet and just one of the sweetest main characters I've ever read. I'm seriously obsessed with him.
Bro Code is definitely one of my favorite bands and I loved loved loved the cameos by some of the best characters ever written!! I can't wait for more PG stories!!
This book is soooooo relatable on so many levels to me. It’s hilarious for one, It’s a Pippa Grant book, so you know it’ll be funny and it’ll have a ton of heart and emotions. This book was a great addition to the BroCode series, and I might be speaking for everyone but I’m glad to see Levi Wilson settle down!
If you're looking to laugh until you hurt, get a toothache from sweetness, and fan yourself from the heat Pippa Grant has you covered with The Hot Mess and the Heartthrob! This was book was the perfect pick me up after the holiday stress hangover. I was literally laughing out loud every other page while I was falling completely in love with every single character. From the super swoony, super sexy, and super sweet Levi to the oh so relatable and hilarious Ingrid and her even funnier adorable children there's a laundry list of things to make this book perfect. I honestly could not get enough!
I'm not usually one to enjoy a single mom romance.. I work with kids for a living and tend to shy away from them when reading because it's my time to escape. However, it's Pippa, so I had to give this a chance. And I loved it. Pippa captures mom life so well; even though it's been a long time since I had 3 kids pretty much the same ages, all of Ingrid's life felt real... including her reluctance to ask for help. Levi was such a well written character and I loved the glimpses into his mind and watching him mature over the course of the book. I love that Pippa always writes men who fall hard, independent women, and quirky side characters and animals. This book had all of that, but it also had a story that touched my heart in ways that don't happen very often. It’s available now on KU!
Couldn’t put this sweet, hilarious book down. My top favorite of Pippa Grant books so far. Loved the original, fun loving characters and the story line is awesome I always enjoy how the characters from one series intertwine flawlessly with the other series, making these all part of the Pippa universe. Grab this one as one of your first reads for 2021.
Hot Mess and the Heartthrob will resonate with so many readers because we all see ourselves in Ingrid. We expect what we should be doing and saying as a working mom, but life seems to keep throwing mud balls and getting everything all wonky. Add in Ingrid is a single working mom of three very different but capricious children, and Ingrid is just exhausted. And in walks Levi Wilson, a former member of BroCode and now a solo performer. Life just got real entertaining for us, the readers.
So many jewels that involve other books and series from the Pippverse stumble, dance, crawl and tiptoe across the pages; you smile and cry your way through the book. There's a George Cooney and sex toy sighting. Ares Berger makes one of the most tender-hearted appearances that literally had me reaching for the kleenex along with teammates from the Thrusters (we really need another hockey book, please). Does anyone remember a pair of memorable white pants from Liar Liar? The other members of BroCode, members of the Copper Valley Fireballs, and our favorite romance author. There is a rogue squirrel with contraband, a hockey-loving girl, and a four-year-old with a penchant for sticking things up his nose. You know those confetti cannons they use at games and pep rallies? Reading this book is like getting blasted with confetti cannon of joy as you are reading. Yes, Pippa writes RomCom--but Pippa writes RomCom with a TON of heart. There's always happiness in her books; Hot Mess and the Heartthrob is filled with satisfying joy and so very much serendipity.
Go ahead, pick this book up, and read it. You don't have to have read the other books; it stands alone brilliantly. But the more Pippa you've read, the more you will be doing little happy dances at all the Easter eggs in this book. Ingrid and Levi will leave you laughing and crying as they find love in a time of single parenting and stardom. And never has a hot mess of a mom looked so darn beautiful. Take heart hot messes--you are beautiful in your hot messiness!
It FINALLY happened! A Single Parent romance with children who act like actual human children! I can't believe it took this long to find one (and by "find one" I mean it was recommended to me after a recent rant about perfect kids in romances).
Okay, now let's get to the book.
Ingrid is a single mom with three kids, a renegade pet squirrel, and a bookstore. Her kids are AWESOMELY REAL. They break rules, shove crap up their nose, complain about bedtime, fight with each other. It's AWESOME. Levi is a former boyband member turned solo artist who comes home for a visit and ducks into Ingrid's bookstore to avoid fans.
These two are freaking ADORABLE. This is a slow burn with sizzling hot chemistry and lots of sweet moments. There is also a truly well-done look at single moms that I loved. Levi's relationship with Ingrid continually makes him see his own single mother with new respect and watching his awareness increase was such a great part of the story.
This book has great friendships, found family, and females supporting females. ALL good things!
I took a star off my rating because this book part of a series (it's billed as a stand-alone within that series) and it is absolutely NOT great as a standalone. I haven't read the previous books and my head was spinning trying to take in the constant back-tracking and ever-revolving cast of characters from the previous books.
Pippa is the goddess of funny, there is no denying that fact, but The Hot Mess and the Heartthrob is more than her typical romcom, it is more than a romantic story between a hot mess mom and a hottie pop god, it is a book jammed full of emotion that kept leaking out of my eyes.
Levi Wilson is feeling melancholy. His life would seem practically perfect; he's living his dream of pop stardom, models dripping from his arms, traveling the world, he's basically done it all, but why can't he shake the feeling that something is missing?
Surrounded by his brother, his friends, and even his own mother who is not only dating or found the loves of their lives might have something to do with this feeling, but it also might have something to do with missing these very people in his daily life every time he visits home. Missing his home town is an ache that is happening more and more, but when he meets Ingrid, a woman who runs a bookshop in Copper Valley that ache grows into something he didn't even know he was missing.
Ingrid is a single mom with three, count them, three children and doesn't have time for the complication that comes with a pop star's life. Her marriage didn't work because her ex was gone all the time, but Levi comes with a whole new set of complications aside from his traveling calendar. What she didn't expect from Levi was the kind, considerate, nice, funny, and every other adjective to describe the man whose music got her through every rough patch in her life, which makes it that much harder not to fall for him, not the singer, but the man himself.
Can a hot mess single mother and a heartthrob pop star really make it work in the long run or can they just have a fun fling and still be friends?
Filled with Pippa's comedy there were also many joyful tear filled moments. Those happy tears literally took my breath away and made the entire story so worth while. Levi is everything you were not expecting, while Ingrid's family is an adorable mess.
"I suddenly have a dozen domestic issues to sort out immediately, starting with a squirrel who wants to take a bath with my mooing son."
A hilariously heartwarming story about family and coming back to your roots.
Levi is back home in Copper Valley for a little rest before his schedule gets crazy again when he gets lost and stumbles into Penny for Your Thoughts and literally knocks Ingrid off her feet the first time they meet. Loving the atmosphere of the bookstore, Levi uses it as an excuse to spend more time with Ingrid only she can not believe that her celebrity crush wants to spend time with her and her wild family. Will her family scare him away or will Levi release it's finally time to settle down?
Levi, Ingrid and the gang had me laughing out loud, tears in my eyes and my heart bursting with happiness. Levi and Ingrid were perfect together as he helped her feel wanted again and she helped him to remember his roots and what he was missing. It was great to catch up with the Bro Code group and meet some new characters. You can never go wrong when you head to Cooper Valley. And in true Pippa fashion, our animal pet for this book is Skippy the Squirrel. You can always count on side-splitting laughs from Pippa Grant!

I needed this book and I needed it badly. The Hot Mess and the Heartthrob was exactly what I've come to expect from Pippa Grant: funny, sweet, and sexy. Levi was adorable. He was an adult who hadn't lost some of his childhood self. I loved that he somewhat knew what it was like to be a single parent having been raised by one, but also that his recognition of his own mother grew while watching Ingrid parent. Ingrid was a tough cookie to crumble for Levi. She was so used to doing things on her own and not relying on anyone. I loved her relationship with her kids. They were some pretty crazy, great kids. Those kids made this romance all the more fun with their antics. I loved how Levi fit right in with the pack. Like I said, this was just a funny, sweet, and sexy love story. I had a great time reading it. It wasn't my absolute favorites by Grant, but it ranks pretty high up there. I feel like her writing continues to grow in a fantastic way with each book release.
The Hot Mess and the Heartthrob by Pippa Grant is a contemporary, single parent, rock star romantic comedy told in first person dual POV. It's the fourth standalone in the Bro Code series, and if you've read any of the other Bro Code books, you'll enjoy the fun character cameos in this one.
Ingrid Scott is a bookstore owner and hot-mess single mother of three energetic kids. Levi Wilson is a sexy, famous pop star who has known since childhood that he never wants to get married.
What happens when the famous pop star meets this frazzled single mom? What could they possibly have in common besides chemistry? Do Ingrid and Levi stand a chance at being more than a casual fling? Is that even something they both want? Read the book to find out.
Ingrid and Levi were perfect for each other, and I loved their story. It was so fun! But of course it was, it's a Pippa Grant book, so that's a given. Full of laugh-out-loud moments, the usual animal shenanigans, and heartwarming sweetness, The Hot Mess and the Heartthrob is a lighthearted, entertaining read. Recommended for anybody looking for a reason to smile.
