Former Marine Will Hawthorne has revealed himself to the alien world of Taitala as the Makalang, a legendary creature who is expected to reverse the world’s decline into senescence and extinction. With his first wives already pregnant, tensions between city’s clans begin stretching to the breaking point as the demand for new children intensifies.
But Will’s attempts to mediate the dispute are upended by a campaign of bombings by the shadowy Black Sky group and suspicions that the mysterious nocturnal panikang are behind it.
As Will continues his quest to unravel the enigma of the Makalang’s role in the world, he must choose between the needs of one of his closest wives and the needs of his adopted world.
The Black Sky is the second book in The Makalang series and contains explicit adult scenes and violence.
Michael Dalton is a professional journalist and editor.
Michael wrote his first piece of fiction in third grade, for which he was immediately accused of plagiarism by his teacher. Since then, he has been writing more or less steadily, interrupted only by occasional demands of work and family.
Michael lives with his family and multiple pets in Southern California.
This book kept me up late reading as I did not want to put it down. The world building is continuing to be intriguing and fun to read about. I like the MC and the secondary characters as well. Overall I really like this series.
I'll be lazy and write one review for the first two books, as I read them back-to-back anyway. The title and cover are probably to get a certain level of exposure in a crowded market, but these books are better than that. The first book may have been a bit stronger in terms of action, but it was the establishing book for the series.
How many books will this be? At least three as of press time (3rd one not out just yet but soon), but there is a fair bit of potential with this story so this second book being more a "development" phase makes sense in terms of the probable arc. Doesn't mean this was a bad book, just not quite as engaging as the first one.
The real test will be the next book, as potential doesn't equal achievement. In any event, although there is a fair bit of sex in these "harem" books there is more going on so they may be worth you having a look.
In some ways a rather standard setup for an isekai harem fantasy world. Guy falls into something that transports him to a world with a LOT of woman and very few men. The women are hot and not quite human (but close enough, as it were).
The first book got Will basically set up -- much of his harem established, a few antagonists dispatched, and the beginnings of understanding his new world. This book really enlarges with the worldview, so the larger issues that are destroying this world are laid out.
Sex if fine, but, honestly, rather repetitive. The characteristics and personalities of the harem girls are laid out very well and they are NOT interchangeable. So the basic mechanics of the series are good.
The next book should be quite good in expanding the world issues.
(audiobook) Book (3.5 stars) Not my genre, unexpectedly decent.
Narrator (4 stars) -Mason Lloyd-(Books 1-4) -Reading an expression is excellent! -Expression timing is occasionally off or excessive. -Four stars is good, he's not R.C. Bray that's all
Narrator (4 stars) -Sierra Kline-(Books 5-8) -Reading an expression very good -I had a hard time with her reading for a male character and not being the original narrator!
*Tantor Audio dropped the series after book 4.
**Personally I will carefully consider any future series from that publisher since clearly they can't be trusted to continue unless they feel like it.
Liked the first book enough to read the second, liked the second enough to plan to read the third when it comes out. Books are quick reads, read one and two in one day. Stories are ok, realize that is hard to write something really unique considering all the others that have come before. This was one of the few series that actually took into account that procreation wasn’t a given as far as the rarity of males to females between all the species.
It's different and still cool! The world and characters are easy to read and the pace is fast. I'm not going to say it has the strongest of plots but the characters are very well expressed the the dialogue, that is what makes this enjoyable! Most adult fantasy of this type make the MC so unrealistic or stereotypical of a TV nerd it's like authors have never really experienced having multiple relationships with ladies! This reads so much better as what feels more natural for a guy to act like...at least a step above the normal of what's out there to read!
For a guy with a world to save, he wastes a lot of time. Dude should be on a mission, but he acts like he's on vacation. Come on dude, get busy! This book focuses on world building and developing relationships. That's all well and good. I'd rather have fade to black than uninspired sex scenes that leave me rolling my eyes. Still the sexy parts are pretty good, the aggravating part is that so many solutions seem obvious to me but the MC isn't thinking about them. Maybe in the next book.
The adventure continues. And the plot thickens a bit. Not much action in this volume but a lot of expanding on the world view.Seems a lot of politics and play. And rmc is learning more about why he is here in the long run. Making babies is just the tip of the iceberg. Enjoy this part of the series and fortunately even though it is harem the romance is fun but not overwhelming. I enjoy this series and looking forward to the next book.
Enjoying the weird world. Smut is decent, spiced a little more which is good. Again liking it's about their wants too not just the MC. No lines as great as the last book's "Get me some pants" but solid. I'll keep going with the series, though one sight peeve two characters with very similar M names was a little confusing. Might want to be more careful if they in the future.
Imagine a world that has many kinds of Beastkin Women with very few males to help reproduce. Then Imagine being a male from Earth falling into this world and having to repopulate the entire world with offspring. It's a tough job, but somebody has to do it. Ya, you might say there a some sex in here. More like 3 to 10 times a day, darn it! There is a story like that's easy to follow. Also, fun to read.
The first book in this series would not allow me to leave a rate,so I will try to let Mr.Dalton know how much I have enjoyed his fantasy. The characters are really quite strange, but also very vivid. The terrain is also very well described. Here's hoping to enjoy the next episode.
Loved every word and every page of this book. The world is certainly one of the most unique I've encountered, and the characters, culture and history is amazing to read about.
And the mystery of the past Makalang and their mission is definitely something I look forward to reading more about!
A truly unique and explained view of monster girls!!! I've read both these books more then once to make sure I understood what the author was getting at. If you haven't read these books you are missing out!!!
One displaced human on a planet full of hybrid women. Who comes first, and what about the half billion women waiting their turn? A new race crops up,and answers to questions are given!
Still depressing. I will not continue. Depressing stories are not entertaining, especially when it concerns children. If the author writes another series, I'd give it a try.
Taking the book in a direction that is all about civics has shown the failings of the characters. This was a lot of bark and absolutely no bite. A big let down on multiple fronts.
It's hard to explain. I like the story, enjoy reading the series. It is a harem story but the story is much more than that. It's a large part of the story but not the entire focus. I want to see what happens on Taitalan.
Interesting take on the John Carter of Mars theme.
MC is strong? Check. Story is interesting and unique? Check. Sex but not too much? Check. Enough twists and turns to keep the flow going? Check. Will I read the next book? Check Check Check!!!
This is a good book. You shouldy read it. I like the story. The characters are fun. The book is a good read. i enjoyed it alot.. Download or buy it today. why not?
I love this series, it's gripping and very well written, fast paced and very intriguing. Quickly becoming a favorite series of mine, on to the next one.
