The Nightsilver Promise

Rate this book
The first book in a magical fantasy trilogy from debut author Annaliese Avery.

London, the Empire of Albion. The Great Dragons of old are long-gone. Now the world is governed by the science of Celestial Physicists, and everyone's life is foretold by the track on their wrist.

When thirteen-year-old Paisley discovers from her track that she is destined to die, the race is on to protect her dragon-touched brother and find her missing mother. But an ancient power stalks the sewers of London, and the Dark Dragon is rising, intent on restoring the Great Dragons and destroying Paisley's family and her world forever.

In a world where science rules and dragons fear to tread, Paisley must trust her instincts and forge new friends, as she attempts to outrun fate itself.

Oh man, this was SO exciting! A series debut that promises a truly exciting future for the world.

This is set in a world where people have a track of stars on their wrist that predicts their destiny, but our protagonist Paisley has lived without a track of stars for the longest time. That is, until she gets hers, it predicts that she is doomed to die.

The best thing about this book is the world and how rich and lush the history of it is. Learning about the Dragons and how people live was the true highlight of this book. It was written so well that I was immediately engrossed in what was going on. Paisley is a great protagonist to follow and her journey was so adventures and brave.

Very excited about what is to come next from this series.

I enjoyed this, but I simultaneously felt as if I had no idea what was going on most of the time. The world building was lacking some depth, and Paisley ... oh, the writer really did her wrong. She felt like a comic book caricature of a badass young girl who can do nothing wrong and survives everything. Where was the growth?

A decent debut, though.

Paisley and her brother go on a journey to see if there mum is still alive.
Paisley must protect her brother as he has the Dragon touch, and he would be in danger if he fell into the wrong hands.

If you like books like Frostheart, Nevermoor & Land of Roar, you'll enjoy this adventure.
I really enjoyed how visual it was. I often have a hard time picturing worlds and characters but this book was described really well so I could picture the steampunk stylings of the world.

Initial Thoughts: Confusing world building. Sequences that aren't quite logical. Main character is good at sword fighting for reasons completely unexplained. I think this is one of those books that got picked up because the world building seems unique, but overall it was a very average read for me.

I really wanted to like this more. The plot has everything I would normally love. But for some reason I can’t quite work out, I just couldn’t get into the story properly. I kept really trying, but it just wouldn’t happen. I feel the world building side of it lacked something, often things seemed weirdly clunky. And the one sentence paragraphs and constant repetition of people’s names drove me a little mad. It gave the prose a halting, staccato feel. I’m hopeful for the sequel, I’m not giving up quite yet…

I'm not yet entirely sure what to think of this book, but thankfully I immediately bought the sequel as well, so my thoughs will probably more specific and less vague when I've read that one. At the moment, I don't have a lot of time either, so I'm keeping my review of The Nightsilver Promise a bit shorter than normal.

The characters were all very interesting. Odelia was my absolute favourite, but Paisley, Dax and even the Dark Dragon were all nice as well. Except... As the book nears its end, Paisley's behaviour seems to become quite... erratic. There's good reason for that, but I'm not quite sure yet as to how her character will evolve in Book 2 and whether that will be an evolution that will please me. The jury's still out on this one, that's what it comes down to.

Although I would have liked some more basic information, the world itself seems very original. Floating cities and neighbourhoods in the sky, dragons, and some kind of mechanistic divinity? Especially that last element, which turns religion into something mechanical, is incredibly unique. I can't think of any other example where religion does not mean something directly related to a purely 'natural' being. The steampunk elements were fun too, of course.

The story fell flat a bit in the middle, but at the start and especially at the end it definitely had and picked up speed. There were a couple of nice twists and turns and thrills, and I definitely enjoyed it.

One minor element: There are some commas missing - something which does happen rather often in British books. But fine. It's not the end of the world.

Curious to see what will happen next!

The best thing about May has definitely been the brilliant books that have been released into the world (because let's face it, it hasn't been the weather) and no one was more excited than me when the postman dropped this much awaited middle-grade debut on my doormat at the beginning of the month.

Written by Golden Egg Academy member, Annaliese Avery, this is a much-anticipated read that's perfect for fans of His Dark Materials, Nevermoor and even Harry Potter. It's a fantasy, science-based adventure set in a brilliantly devised parallel world.

Paisley Fitzwilliam is rocked to the core when it is revealed that, before her fourteenth birthday, her track will end and she will die. But when her mother goes missing and is presumed dead, Paisley swears she will be the one to protect her dragon -touched brother Dax at all costs. Navigating the Empire of Albion, with its scientific rule, floating boroughs and underground sewers, Paisley and Dax set out on a journey to find their mother and unlock the secret behind her disappearance. But Paisley's fate is ringing in her ears. Can she change the course of her stars and survive the outcome?

This is classic storytelling at its best. The Empire of Albion is a richly imagined parallel world that has been constructed with meticulous attention to detail. In this story, dragons merge with science to tell us a story of creation with a difference. And now the world is in trouble, it's up to Paisley to take charge and defeat the Dark Dragon - a chilling and unique villain.

The story is told from two perspectives - Paisley and Roach. In Paisley we get a strong, brave, female lead whose odds are against her and her family from the start. Paisley feels all the fear that comes with the knowledge she's going to die but, after being brought up by a mother with strong convictions, chooses to defy her stars and do everything she can to save the world and those she loves. In contrast, Roach, who works for the Dark Dragon, has made all the wrong choices. However, I love how Avery reveals the reasons behind his actions which are both poignant and relatable. As a result, Roach is very much a character to watch.

The plot is dynamic and action-packed. From floating boroughs to dragon walkers, museums to sewers, readers are privy from the outset to a strong internal and external struggle. The strong villainous force that is amassing reminded me very much of The Death Eaters and many things still lie unanswered. What role will the dragon-touched play? Is the comet really a comet and has The Veil been penetrated? This is a world that isn't going anywhere and may the cogs of time turn quickly until the next instalment.

I would give this 3.5 stars. I like the characters, but some of them needed more development (especially the “villains”). I realize that might happen in the next book. I love Paisley and Dax! Love the concept of the Great Dragons and Dragon Walkers. It made me wish to be “dragon-touched”, but only if I could pick the features! The ending bummed me out though.

The book follows Paisley, a young girl who has recently learned her track is leading her towards death. I loved how Paisley was immediately thrown into a difficult situation, as it made me become invested in the story right away. I feel like a lot of books tend to drag at the start, but The Nightsilver Promise has an immediate problem that needs to be solved. Even though Paisley has been told her whole life she must follow her track, she refuses to just accept her fate. I loved the message that we can decide our own future and nothing is ever set in stone. It’s easy to feel trapped in what you’re doing and like there’s no escape. I thought this was the perfect message for a middle grade book to give, as it lets kids know they can be like Paisley and decide their own track.

I loved the characters in this book, especially Dax, Paisley’s younger brother. Dax is dragon touched, which means he has a body part of a dragon and the power to go with it. In Dax’s case he has a dragon leg, but others who are dragon touched range from having dragon wings, claws and even the power to breath fire. It wasn’t clearly explained how people came to be dragon touched as it didn’t seem to be in their track, but as dragons are seen as evil creatures in the south, those who are dragon touched are treated horribly. As there is a prophecy about a dragon touched boy, Dax has no choice but to conceal his leg by wearing a brace that causes him pain. I felt sorry for Dax as he just seemed like a normal kid but he was expected to do so much.

I adored this book and could honestly keep talking about it for hours! There’s so much that happened that I just haven’t been able to cover in this review, so I definitely recommend reading it for yourselves. There are a few things that I remained confused about, but I’m hoping these things will be covered in the sequel. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens with Dax, as his story was left on a huge cliffhanger! I’d also love to learn more about Odelia, a girl who like Dax is dragon touched. I found her to be an interesting character throughout the book, but I felt like I knew barely anything about her. I recommend this book to all lovers of fantasy, and I’m looking forward to finding out where Paisley and Dax’s journey will lead them next!

DNF at chapter 6

I’m so confused. The dragons and half-dragon people are feared and prejudiced against… but dragons are also a big part of the culture and they use dragon materials and give dragon statuettes as gifts? I feel like you can’t really have it both ways.

The writing style so far is not really to my taste either. Here’s something I highlighted on page 4, from a newspaper article about the main character’s scientist mother, who had made a big discovery:

"She is also mother to a crippled son and a teenage daughter, who is reported to be trackless.”

This kind of statement is completely irrelevant and would only be inserted as a way to somehow publicly slight the scientist, but it was a scientific article about how great the discovery was. There were other ways to show that the son was disabled (or in this case, hiding a very big secret).

I know I’m not far in and that I shouldn’t be thinking so much about these little things, but for some reason it’s turned me against wanting to read any more.

2nd Read- May 2022
-This was one of my favourite books from last year and I just had to re-read it before jumping into the second book so I could fully appreciate the story. I did enjoy it slightly less this time around but still think it's a fantastic story.

Paisley's track, which determines her fate tells her that she will die before her 14th turning. Dax her Dragon touched brother destined to be the Chosen One, but must keep it a secret because some would kill him if they knew the truth. Paisley's mother finds the key to not letting your track determine your fate, but before she can share her discovery she disappears. With the help of Odelia (a Dragon-Touched warrior), Corbett (Violetta/Paisley's mother apprentice), and Dax they must find out the truth of what happened to their mother. and who they can trust.

Honestly, this book just didn't live up to how I expected it to be. Part of what affected how much I enjoyed it was the fact that I read it over a long course of many days. I didn't really feel the motivation to read it. It was also that I couldn't full connect with the characters, or feel as though I was connected to the story and there. First of all, the plot was imaginative but I have read a plot that follows only the same lines as this one. I didn't feel as connected as I hoped to be. First off the worldbuilding aspect wasn't entirely the best. We got a lot of backstory on Anu and the four pieces of her soul. The past worldbuilding that sets the stage and tells us about the worlds past was really good. The whole Anu, and four pieces of the souls, dragons, and dragon touched, dragon order, heartstone, and the Veil was all really well written and explained. But then the current place world building could be more explored on. I wasn't sure at first if this was a whole different planet all together that this takes place, or if it is a alternate dimension of Earth. Or just a imaginary version of Earth where there were dragons instead of dinosaurs, and Anu was the creator of Earth. There was a lot of information in just one book, that could have possibly been inserted at better times. Now on to the characters. I found the side characters, and the antagonist a lot more interesting than the protagonist which is really saying something.

A lot of the time Paisley would sometimes burst out into a really dramatic quote at the wrong time? When Dax and Paisley were discussing artifacts she has this whole quote about how are fates aren't written in stone, and we can be who we want to be. She also had quotes about the world not being how it were but how it can only be how it are... I thought Dax Violetta, Corbett, and Odelia, were okay. I really thought Roach was the most dimensional, he had a goal, morals ( not all good), and a backstory to why he wanted to do something. Lets just say, that one person had a pretty questionable personality. That person betrayed them, and did things for no particular reason.

A very fun, short read.

This book was fun and entertaining with an interesting plot line...with dragons!

Paisley is a very good protagonist whose arc I can relate to. She's very smart and passionate about her family. She wasn't my favorite character, but I didn't hate her in the slightest. I just found her to be not as interesting as other characters.

Dax has a secret, one that leaves him with a disability. Which I thought was represented thoughtfully, and I sometimes found him to be more interesting than Paisley. He could sometimes be borderline annoying, but I thought he had a little more personality than she did.

Corbett was made for the audience. He's the character that, for some reason, doesn't know anything about the world he lives in.

"OH, my parents never told me silly old dragon tales."

Of course, they didn't Corbett, because we never heard those dragon tales.

Also, what's the deal with Roach (hate that name)? I thought this book was going to be a duo novel. They switched between the two characters a lot at the beginning. I thought he was going to play a bigger part, but we just forgot he had a POV at the end? I thought it strange they did so much set up and just didn't return to him like at all. Maybe in the sequel, we'll get more of him.

The mystery was good, and it kept my interest until the end when the twist happened (it's more of a reveal than a twsit). I thought it was interesting that this basically all happened within a day or two, which makes the timeline of the next book a little unpredictable with the events that transpired at the end.

The ending was good and kept readers reading, but this book does suffer from a lot of exposition, I mean a lot of it.

I notice exposition in novels, but this book kept my brain on its toes, trying to remember every little detail about the dragons they explain.

Also, the dragon walkers just confused me throughout the book. I didn't understand how they could be dragon touched, and everyone was okay with it. Yes, they're girls, but girls are still taken away by the Men of the Yard.

I didn't quite understand what role they played.I could've accidentally looked over that while reading or something.

I also thought they were just weird? The whole part dragon thing for them, I don't know it wasn't my favorite and made the world building more confusing.

All in all, the novel was an exciting quick read that keeps the readers entertained throughout. I highly recommend this book to any fantasy lover (and especially dragon lovers such as myself).

Annaliese Avery’s MG debut, THE NIGHTSILVER PROMISE, will be released in Canada on December 7th (it’s available now to request on Edelweiss+), but I was thrilled when the author sent me a copy of the book currently available in the UK. As many of you know, Annaliese is the person responsible for #MGBooktober and the force behind the creation of MG Book Village, so it’s an absolute pleasure to see her publishing dreams come to reality after she’s given so much to the MG community.

Paisley has been not-so-patiently waiting to find out her destiny. Each person gets a mark on their wrist that maps out their life, and Paisley has waited 13 years to get hers. But when the day finally arrives, she discovers that it foretells her death in the next year. Paisley is determined to find a way to determine her own track, but as her mother, Violetta, is proving that the Celestial Physicists who govern their world are wrong, she goes missing and is presumed dead. Paisley and her brother, Dax, must figure out what knowledge their mother has that makes her such a threat while keeping a family secret that could make the siblings even bigger targets. But the Dark Dragon cares nothing for science and is convinced that Violetta’s research will give her the power to return the dragons to their world and avenge past wrongs. Paisley must outrun her own fate and save her family (and the world) before the Dark Dragon fulfills her destiny.

There is some fantastic world-building in this book, and it felt like each page had some detail that kept us immersed in a place so different from our own. I loved Paisley and her determination to chart her course despite the odds against her. I also loved her fierce and protective devotion to her brother, her intelligence, and her resilience as she endures overwhelming circumstances and betrayal. The story moved quickly, and I had a hard time putting it down. It has a science-fiction feel even though it’s considered a fantasy, and I enjoyed how it explored both aspects and how they could impact each other.

This is the first book in Celestial Mechanism Cycle series, and I will anxiously await the next book to see what happens to Paisley and Dax in their next adventure.

łał! ogień! walka! nieee! i… koniec.
