Eva can't wait to get a new pet! But she can't decide what kind of pet to get. Her pet needs to be cute, cuddly, friendly... and, of course, get along with her bat, Baxter. Eva's friend Lucy has a great idea: They will pet-sit for all their friends to find out which animal is right for Eva! Chaos breaks out as they look after a bumblebee, a tortoise, a goldfish, and more. Will Baxter be able to help Eva discover which pet is just-right for their family?
Rebecca Elliott is the author and illustrator of the best-selling Owl Diaries series (Scholastic US) & over 20 picture books including Just Because, Sometimes, Naked Trevor and Zoo Girl, for which she was nominated for the 2012 Kate Greenaway Medal. Her new series The Unicorn Diaries (Scholastic US) & her first YA novel 'Pretty Funny ' (Penguin Random House) are out now.
I was excited when I found this book at the library because I've never read it! The Owl Diaries series is a great for children who are just starting to read chapter books.
Hey, fellow readers! I just finished reading a super duper awesome book called Owl Diaries Eva's New Pet. It's the fifteenth book in the Owl Diaries series, and I can't wait to tell you all about it!
In this book, Eva really, really, really wants to get a new pet. But she has some requirements. She wants a pet that's sweet, cute, cuddly, and friendly. Those are all the important things, right? But guess what? Eva also considers getting a porcupine, even though they aren't very cuddly. Porcupines are still cute, though! She also thinks about getting bees, but they can sting, so she'll have to train them. She's really thinking about getting a pet that can defend her.
But Eva's main goal is to find a pet that's cute, cuddly, friendly, and gets along well with her best friend, Baxter. That's important too, right? But Eva is having a hard time finding the perfect pet, and on top of that, Baxter is not his usual playful self. Maybe he knows Eva wants a new pet and thinks she won't love him as much anymore. Baxter is a pretty smart owl, after all.
Then, something exciting happens! Baxter saves a squirrel, and they start playing together. They have so much fun! But then, the squirrel has to go back home, and Eva has to go home too. But guess what? Baxter goes missing again! He runs off with the squirrel because he's really good at helping other animals. Baxter is such a helpful friend!
Baxter goes to the squirrel's nest where the baby squirrels are staying. They don't have parents, so Baxter is being super caring and helpful. Eva thinks the baby squirrels are so cute and cuddly. One of them becomes Eva's new pet, but they haven't thought of a name yet. Eva decides to name the little cutie Acorn. Isn't that a cute name?
I absolutely love these books because they have really, really cool illustrations, and the stories are amazing. In this book, the message is really important. It teaches us that when we're trying to get something new, we can't forget about the old things we already have. Sometimes, when we're getting something for someone else, it's important to let them choose. It's like when I want to get the perfect birthday present for my brother or sister or mom or dad. I have to ask them what they would like, but I can't spoil the surprise. It's all about letting others have a say too.
I highly recommend Owl Diaries Eva's New Pet to all the animal-loving readers out there. It's a heartwarming and fun story with adorable illustrations that make the book even more enjoyable. So, go ahead and give it a try!

I've got so much to say about this book. Watch my full review on my YouTube channel to hear all my thoughts. https://youtu.be/lCeAonK40jE
Eva loves her pet bat Baxter, but she worries he is lonely while she's at school. She wants to get a second pet to keep Baxter company, but needs to find just the right pet for him and her. But how can she find the right pet?
Elliott's illustrations are so cute, and it is easy to understand why kids love this series. I like how this introduces kids to the concept of making sure a new pet will fit with a current pet before jumping into 2nd pet ownership. As an adult, the fact that some animals are sentient and talking while others are not in this book and that that seems to be very arbitrary boggles my mind a little, but it likely won't bother kids. Hand this to animal lovers.
Eva wants to get a new pet but she doesn't know what. To decide, Eva tries to see what kind of pet would get along best with Baxter her pet bat. Her classmates bring all their pets to school one day to see which animal will get along with Baxter best, but it seems that Baxter isn't interested in playing with any of them! Does Baxter not want Eva to get another pet friend?
This is a good book to introduce the idea of how to go about choosing a pet when more than one person is involved in considering one. I liked the idea of a checklist that is made to check off the criteria of the pet they get.
Eva decides that she should get a new pet so Baxter won't be so lonely when she's busy and can't play with him, which sets off an entire week that's pet focused. It's cute to see the other owl's pets and how they interact, and Baxter has always been a star in Eva's life so it was nice to see a book exploring that further. Another cute addition to the series.
For: fans of owls; readers wanting a diary format and fun illustrations.
Possible red flags: feeling left behind/excluded; messes and chaos; worrying about dynamic shifts.

I read this to my kindergartener and she loved it and request more. The back of the book recommends this could be read alone by 1st-2nd grade students. Lots of colorful pictures, no villains, a small conflict to be resolved onw what new pet Eva the owl should get that fills her checklist of wants plus Baxter her pet Bat will love too! Heartfelt. Warm story with lots of friends and written diary style with tons of colorful pictures.
Miss 7 loves reading about Eva. She showed me all the different pets the class brought in.
Miss 7 and I like to explore different books and authors at the library, sometimes around particular topics or themes. We try to get different ones out every week or so; it's fun for both of us to have the variety and to look at a mix of new & favourite authors.
J loves this book series! It's got the cutest look to the pages - the colors and illustrations, even the font is cute!! The pages are lined, just like a diary would be. (3rd grade) It's exciting to see some new books are being added to this series. We are checking them out from the library and reading them as fast as she can!
Eva Wingdale is looking forward to getting a new pet in addition to her pet bat Baxter, so that he won't be so lonely while she attends Treetop Owlementary. She writes in her diary all the events leading up to her finding the right pet. The big question is will Baxter be happy with her selection?
I liked and didn't like this book I liked this book because she loves Baxter and she decided she didn't need a pet she had Baxter I didn't like about this book is that she got a new pet anyway and she got one and I didn't like her this is why I did like this book and didn't like this book

Part of the Owl Diaries series for beginning readers. Eva's getting a new pet. Can she and her pet owl Baxter find one that checks off the boxes on both of their lists?
A nice addition to this series, but I think I'm getting a little tired of Eva the owl. In this one, she decides she wants a pet to be friends with Baxter, but Baxter is grumpy about it. Some funny moments, like the spider bum and the snake in the toilet.
