Long ago, dreams glowed on the screen under the night sky at the old drive-in theater. Once an attraction drawing families and teenagers from miles around, the theater has sat dark and silent for years, its former bright, carnival-like atmosphere a distant memory.
A young family brings the forgotten theater to life with a new, modern vision for its future, but strange troubles plague them. Something from the past haunts the theater and won't leave them, or their occasional customers, alone. The family is living in the old theater manager's apartment located inside the drive-in's screen tower, so they enjoy no peace even when they go home after work late at night.
With disturbing supernatural activity threatening their small business and their family, they turn to paranormal investigator Ellie Jordan for help—but the mythic world of the movies has its own dark magic, and Ellie may not be prepared to face what awaits her when the sun goes down, the lights go out, and the show begins.
J.L. Bryan studied English literature at the University of Georgia and at Oxford, with a focus on English Renaissance and Romantic literature. He also studied screenwriting at UCLA. He lives in the metro Atlanta sprawl with his wife and son. He is the author of the Ellie Jordan, Ghost Trapper books and some other assorted novels like Inferno Park, The Unseen, Jenny Pox, and basically a lot of supernatural stories, some of it dark, some of it very dark, some of it less dark than that.
I have loved this series from the very beginning, it is just so much fun and it keeps me on my toes. I love all the new places, new ghosts and new haunts that Bryan takes us and he never ceases to disappoint in the creep factor and I never leave one of his stories disappointed. I get everything I love in a good mystery and in a good ghost story.
His latest setting has to be one of my most favorites yet. Who doesn't remember going to the drive-thru as a small kid and all the magic that the big screen held?
I absolutely adored this! From the very fun family, to the movie star ghosts, the spooky moments and of course Ellie, Stacee and Jacob. It was just so much fun and I loved every minute of it!
Bryan's has once again outdone himself in this latest installment and I can't wait for more!
Midnight Movie By J. L. Bryan A good murder mystery, with ghosts. I have enjoyed this series and had read up to book 13 before. Now, after some time, there are more books to enjoy.
Another great Ghost Trapper story! As always things aren't exactly as they seem, but that doesn't stop Ellie and crew from tackling the restless spirits head on. And Bryan once again did a wonderful job creating the creepy spirits and the tragic back stories that went along with them. I very much enjoyed it and look forward to the next book in the series.
The Ellie Jordan, Ghost Trapper series is one of my favorites. And so are the main characters Ellie and Stacey.
For Midnight Movie you have Ellie and Stacey called to help a young family who are being haunted. They just bought an old drive-in movie theater and had high hopes of making it a success. Alas, the ghosts of the past aren’t having none of it and things get dangerous.
I used to love going to the drive-in. Back in the day they had these boxy metal speakers you hung on your vehicle’s windows. There were swing sets to play on between movies. And the junk food. Yummy!
There’s nothing family friendly going on at this drive-in. I felt really bad for the family. It’s hard enough to sink your money into something that’s sat empty for a long time. And you can’t exactly start advertising the grand opening when there’s dangerous ghosts roaming around. I had faith that Ellie and Stacey would get to the bottom of it.
It was nice to be able to check in with some of the other characters that are featured throughout the series. Been wondering how they were doing. Anyone who has been involved with Ellie’s cases has been through some ordeals and some of those are lasting ones.
This was quite the complicated case for the ghost trapping team. I really enjoyed learning the reason behind the hauntings. Another killer read in a series I’ve come to love very much.
I received a complimentary copy. My review is voluntarily given.
Years ago drive in movie theaters were the thing. Now they are all but forgotten rundown memories. When a young couple decide to revive one they had no idea that is was being haunted and enlist the help of paranormal investigator Ellie Jordan and her assistant Stacy.
This wasn't as spooky as some of the previous books but I still find myself creeped out reading them at night. The author does a great job of inserting the creepiness into each of his stories. This one takes us back to the 50's cinema and the type of actors that stared in roles back then. Using the backdrop of the 50s through the 70's kept the story interesting along with who's and why of the hauntings.
I am always so happy when a new Ellie Jordan book comes out—it’s one of my favorite series! In this case, Ellie and Stacey are heading to a haunted drive-in theater! I loved the setting! Especially for nowadays when drive-ins are big again, for obvious reasons. Unfortunately, my town had one but they sold it a long time ago and was turned into a storage place. I pass it every single day on my way home, and it just makes me sad to see that it’s not a functioning drive-in anymore 😩 But I’m glad I got to experience it vicariously through this book. Lol. Albeit it was a bit more spooky than your typical drive-in. Lol. Which I loved! The owners just bought the place and they’re fixing it up to reopen it and it honestly sounds great!
This case is a bit closer to home for the girls, so that means they get to drive back at the end of the night. That meant we got to spend some time with Michael and Melissa, which I really enjoyed. After what happened to Melissa with Anton Clay, I was wondering how she was doing. I mean, a pyromaniac ghost possessed her! She definitely seems different—distant—which is to be expected. Ellie feels really bad, but the girls bond over an old movie and I thought that was really sweet. That whole scene was great!
We also got to see quite a bit of Jacob, especially in the last third of the book, which yes please! I love him so I am always down whenever they’re in need of a psychic. And even if they don’t, I just love him. Lol. I love all of these characters, and their banter with one another is one of my favorite things.
“Well, she’s no Casper,” I said. “Casper? She’s not even a Beetlejuice.” Stacey helped me up. “She’s more of a Freddy Kruger.”
Sassy Stacey, I missed her! Lol. Ellie herself is quite sassy too and I love it! But one of my favorite things about our heroine is that if the client is in some serious danger, they take the case regardless of whether they are able to pay or not. That sense of responsibility she has to protect people from the things that go bump in the night no matter what is very admirable. I love how selfless Ellie is 🖤
One of the things I love about these books that for some reason is never boring to me, is the research. It’s probably because the cases are always so interesting, so all the discoveries they make are intriguing. And one thing that was unique to this book was that we almost got stories within the story. They’re at a drive-in, so they watched quite a bit of movies while they were there investigating and waiting for the ghosts to make their presence known. And some of these movies were so incredibly cheesy that I hated them! Lol. And by that I obviously mean I loved them! Lol. I love watching bad horror movies, and some of these were no good, and I loved every second of it! 😂 And it was made even better by the banter of the characters as they sat and watched these movies. And one movie even had a crazy plot twist I did not see coming! It was just a lot of fun!
As for the case itself, it was very intriguing, especially because it involved some pretty big (fictional) Hollywood stars from way back in the day. It involved several ghosts and they were all intertwined in some interesting ways. I really enjoyed the climax as the mystery unraveled and we figured out what happened to all these different spirits. And a book about ghosts and trapping ghosts is not without action, and you know I love a good action sequence, and the ones in this book were great! I always enjoy them and the clever ways Ellie gets herself out of tough situations.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book, which should be no surprise at this point in the series. Lol. It was a lot of fun and I always enjoy revisiting these characters. The setting in this one was great and I really enjoyed unraveling the mystery of the haunted drive-in. I am really looking forward to the next Ellie Jordan book!
A haunting that Ellie and Stacey just.can't work out.
Benny and Claire along with daughter Daisy have sunk everything they have into an old drive-in movie theatre, Benny is convinced marketed right it could.he a good mine and he may be right as.Claire's pizzas are delicious. One.problem, something keeps scaring away their customers, everything is going great then the car/ can screeches out of there. Ellie and Stacey do find evidence of a haunting but it's all.very confusing. There is no evidence of any murders ( usually necessary for hauntings) no violence of any kind. The only previous owner died of.old age as did his wife and mother in law. There's also. The fact that the apparitions greatly resemble two Hollywood stars who both died young, violently but nowhere near Savannah so how and why would they be haunting a drive in theatre that has no meaning to them. It's a puzzle but it's one the girls.must solve it they are to have a good of helping this.nice family.
Ellie Jordan, Ghost Trapper #14: Midnight Movie delivers another fun-filled paranormal adventure, perfect for fans of the series.
While some might miss the chills that J.L. Bryan conjured in previous books (in my personal opinion), Midnight Movie makes up for it with its lovable characters and the author's signature light and engaging writing style. This one feels more like a cosy mystery than a horror story, making it a great choice for a relaxing weekend read, snuggled up on the sofa with the cats.
Ellie Jordan and the gang keep us entertained all the while unravelling the secrets of a haunted drive-in theatre which is being restored to its former glory. As with all the books in the series, there's more to the ghostly goings-on than meets the eye, and Ellie's is determined to help those in need!
Overall, Midnight Movie is another delightful book in the Ellie Jordan, Ghost Trapper series. Fans won't be disappointed!
Picking up a new Ellie Jordan, Ghost Trapper book is like visiting a good friend or friends – because the series wouldn’t be the same without her “found” family. I look forward to each new installment of this series and pretty much drop whatever I had decided was next in my never ending TBR pile to spend time with this crew – even though I know I’m in for some sort of dangerous terror between the pages. Crazy, right?
I also look forward to discovering whatever unique venue J.L. Bryan has decided to haunt next. There are so many deserted drive-in movie theaters across the country that Midnight Movie probably provided a familiar spot for a lot of readers. That familiarity definitely took scare factor up a notch – plus there was a bonus haunting at a nearby house. Yikes!
As with most mysteries, nothing is quite what it seems and there was more than one spooky being haunting the property. The real mystery was figuring out exactly who they were and more importantly, which one was in charge and the most dangerous.
Of course, Ellie found herself right in the middle of the danger while trying to protect her friends and the family that hired them. There was also a lot of witty banter and fun to break the growing tension. As a bonus, they also got to watch a lot of really old and some really bad movies while they were trying to figure out exactly who they were dealing with. Which brings me to an interesting side note…if J.L. Bryan ever decides to abandon his book writing, he may have a future in writing screen plays for campy, over the top “B” movie horror stories. 😉
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of Midnight Movie. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I really enjoyed the setting for this Ellie adventure. I am hoping that drive-ins around the country will be repaired and reopened. I hate sitting in a theater house. I used to love hooking the speaker on my car window and visiting the concession stand. Something about being out in the night in one's own car with others, watching a big screen and hearing the crunch of gravel beneath the feet of people walking by, elicits excitement and freedom! This book brought back lots of good memories! I also enjoyed the storyline with my favorite characters Ellie, Stacey and Jacob. I also liked that Ellie is showing more gumption (or stones!). Great read. Can't wait for The Lodge. Thanks JL, and here's hoping that you keep them coming!
4 1/2 stars rounded up. I really loved this one, it had a cast of lovely characters, not heavy on the horror, no real moments of suspending disbelief like in past novels for being too close to fire or falling through a roof and somehow clinging on.
Just a straightforward mystery to solve, which comes together beautifully and was an excellent way to pass a night. An impressive feat to pull off at this point in the series. (Also I feel slightly bad about how much more I like these episodic stand-alone novels of Bryan's rather than the ones that have continuing storylines, but I think it's because these don't carry any heavy baggage. I like seeing intrepid ghost-hunters solve crimes. It's my bag, baby.)
Another good read from J.L.Bryan with more ghosts threatening Ellie and Stacey than one would think possible all in one area, the newly, soon to be opened, Drive-In movie park and food bar. The owners are a young couple with a small toddler, so Ellie wants to make this place a safe and sound one for them, especially as the child would be so vulnerable to spirit suggestion. They soon find that it will not be as simple as they hoped as all the avenging spirits are connected to the by-gone days of the 'silver screen' so are quite happy to remain, watching themselves on the massive drive-in movie screen.
An old drive in theater is a great place for a ghost story.. Ellie and Stacy have their work cut out for them trying to figure out who's haunting the drive in, and how they might be connected to some movie stars from the 50s.. The atmosphere is spooky and engaging. I love watching them dig to uncover the past, and when they actually physically encounter the ghosts it feels like it's happening to you..
I have fond memories of drive-in movies, sitting in the back of my parent’s car, munching snacks and drinking cool bottles of Yoo Hoo. So I really enjoyed this latest spooky adventure of ghost hunter Ellie and her intrepid partner, Stacy. The movie and celebrity details were enjoyable, and as always, the story had just the right amount of spookiness to keep me reading with a light on. Can’t wait for the next story.
The drive-in haunting in this one - the ghost that appears at your car window, or actually in the car, is terrifying, and well executed, and the whole setting feels like a dream of the perfect movie experience (ghost excepted). The way Bryan plays with the concept of capturing the spirit on film is inventive and well done.
I think if the malignant ghosts had been halved, and maybe a little less human, it would have been a tighter and better read.
4 1/2 stars for JL Bryan's Midnight Movie. Ellie and the gang are back trying to rid an old drive in movie of spirits before the new owners open for business. The author has a way of building a new and rather improbable ghost story to a climax that makes the reader feel not only scared, but as if the story actually took place. Looking forward to reading the next book.
Yay! So excited for another Ellie Jordan adventure. This one was excellent. I loved the premise of the haunted drive-in movie theater. I liked the slower start to this story, it really helped build the atmosphere and made the haunting more of a mystery to solve then just ghosts to catch. I'll be looking for the next book as soon as it's available.
I've liked every book in the Ellie Jordan series and am surprised in the continued creativity in the stories. The ghosts in the drive-in were frightening, the couple in the story were heart-warming, and the final way that got rid of the ghost was ingenious. and as always, I love the relationships between the consistent cast.
Every new book is a fresh plot or haunting that keeps me interested from start to finish. The author does an awesome job researching and building the story. My only complaint is having to wait for the next installment because I read them so fast.
I was caught by a drive in in 1972&73. It was called the north star dive in and I was there for everything they showed. The things we did at that drive in. I know that it is gone now and I miss it even though it was closed a long time ago.tell you what you keep writing them and I will keep reading them. Sincerely christinedunne Harlingen Texas
Super entry in the series. Between the unusual location and the various ghosts I found the story scary as hell. Many chilling moments and a few surprises at the end had me guessing right up until the final resolution. I love these books as each story is scarier than the last. Just wish we got to see more of Ellie's boyfriend Michael. On to the next!
Great storyline and characters! This was another "hard to put down" book in this series. I'm very much into ghost stories that hold my attention throughout the entire book and each book in this series does exactly that. I'll be moving on to the next one shortly!😃
Book as always excellent. But Michael was hardly in it. He's stronger than Ellie gives him credit. He wants to help and be more of a partner in their relationship. Would like to see them become closer and deal with what that involves.
Probably not good for the weaker minded, as these stories are so believable. Interesting, all the way through, with a good ending, and relevant to our era.
I liked this book it was more like the older ones mostly Stacy and Ellie a sprinkle of Jacob. Some in the middle got a little weird. The story was good I wish we could have gotten a reaction from the historical society guy.
This book, like all the ones before, was amazing. I loved the story line. These characters r more like friends now. We share their life so intimately that u feel like u could step into their world.
As usual, Bryan is a genius! He has a way of making a story seem real! He does his homework preparing his novels for a touch of authenticity. You'll be sure to love this one, too!
A little light on the creepy factor, but still the same delightful characters and light, engaging writing style. This series is like a warm fuzzy blanket; just can’t get enough!
