I love how much depth this volume adds to the demons. While I don’t agree with Rui’s actions, I can empathize with his feeling and what he wants out of love. Rui’s story is so beautifully written.

In a family, a father has a distinct set of responsibilities. And a mother has her own specific role to play. Parents must protect their children and the elder children must protect their younger siblings, even at the risk of their own lives. I believe that people who don't fulfill their roles have no right to live. What about you? Do you know what your role in life is? [Rui]

First of all, I forgot how creepy the spider demon family was! Also, I don't remember feeling scared of them when I watched the anime, but, while reading the manga, I felt the cold sweat all over my body. Ick! But that's not what I wanted to talk about, it wasn't any real issue for me. What I wanted to point out about Volume 5 of Demon Slayer is the importance of a family (no matter how this family looks like).

"What are you doing?! Aren't you her friend?!"
"Friend? Our connection is nothing so superficial. We are family. Strong ties bind us."

First we have the spider demon family, who, except for their looks and bad intentions, is like a family should look like. Everyone plays their roles how they should, both the parents and the children, and they are proof that there is no need to be bound by blood to be a family.

But the thing is, they aren't really a family, because a family's foundation cannot be fear.

On the other side we have the Kamado family. A blood-related family who's foundation isn't blood, but love. This is a family that the center of Vol. 5, a demon named Rui, tried to build, but failed drastically by choosing violence and fear over love and compassion. Rui failed and paid the price with his life, slayed by Tanjiro like every other demon. And, like every other demon, who died by Tanjiro's hand, didn't leave the earth without feeling his pure compassion and understanding.

"Don't waste pity on a demon that ate dozens of people. Even if it looks like a child. It was a horrible monster that lived for hundreds of years."
"In order to soothe the spirits of those it killed, and to make sure it claims no further victims, I will swing my blade and lop off the head of any demon without mercy! But I will not belittle those who regret their actions and suffer over the things they did as demons. Because demons were once human. Because they were human like me."

I think I already said how awesome it is that, every time we encounter an opponent, we get the opportunity to see a human inside the demon. It doesn't just show us that all the demons were humans once or that Tanjiro's heart is pure, it also shows us that evil is not born, but made. It's a simple and obvious thing that shouldn't be as impactful and shouldn't work as well, but it is and it does. I like it a lot.

Anyways, outside of the topic of family, through Volume 5 we met another Hashira, Shinobu. She's nothing like Giyuu, and it shows when their personalities clash in the end of the volume. I have to admit that I wasn't a fan of hers when she's been first introduced in the anime, but I warmed up to her the more episodes I watched. She looks like a cinnamon roll and is a cinnamon roll, but can kill you in an instant if she wants to. That's terrifying.

I am giving this volume strong four stars, because I enjoyed reading it a lot, but I cannot just not address the absurd things that the story had. None of these were an issue for me, and they didn't have any impact on my rating, but I need to address them. Ready?

Absurd no. 1: Tanjiro's "I can smell trust between people" thing. I mean, huh?! I understand that his sense of smell is sharp and that's one of his strongest points as a slayer, but his talent to smell trust is weird.

Absurd no. 2: a kid demon slayer came out of nowhere out of the forest and decided to attack Rui. How did he survive the spider demon mother's attack in the first place, weren't all the slayers (with one exception) killed off by her? Even if he did survive, the only reason why he arrived instead of running away was for us to see how strong and violent Rui is, which was purely not needed, because we could already seen it plenty of times, in the scene with his sister for example. That kid's death was completely meaningless.

Absurd no. 3: Inosuke's attack with two swords worked the second time while at first it failed. All because he let go of thinking ? I guess ???

Absurd no. 4: Tanjiro spins like a writhing dragon and the more he spins, each of his strikes get stronger. I mean... huh??

Absurd no. 5: the whole breathing techniques are completely strange, but I accepted it as a way to get stronger. I did. But how can you made a shield trough breathing?

Thanks for coming here and reading my mix of thoughts in this review! I am jumping to the next Demon Slayer volume as we speak. There will be a Shinobu vs Guyuu clash, I wonder who will be victorious on the end! ;)

The demon-spider family just got even more interesting!! I was already enjoying the fight scenes between Tanjiro and the brother demon before getting any of their backstories, so the additional flashbacks were a nice surprise.
I really loved the concept of the spider-demon’s made up family, orchestrated to replicate the echoes of his lost human memories.

Muy entretenidas las batallas con los demonios y además se han visto nuevos cazadores "pilares" que están a otro nivel.
Pero surge un cisma entre estos cazadores de demonios y la hermana de nuestro protagonista.
Va mejorando el manga

The author has developed a great sense of pace and structure, with a prelude, a climax and an aftermath which feels rewarding and offers a backstory explanation, which in turns shifts the entire flavor and sensation towards what happened until that point in the story. The art and fight scenes are indeed getting more and more amazing just like other reviews suggest - which is very important, as there's a lot of combat going on.
This volume explores a variety of themes, but in an order which feels fluid. It highlights difference in skill, explores the point of life passing before one's eyes on the brink of death, the desire for love and bonds, including those less desirable such as bonds of fear, and lastly lessons in mercy and forgiveness, of poweful empathy.
The Spider family which contains the lower rank Five within the Twelve Kizuki was used as a great vehicle for a lot of emotional points, but also represents in my view a steady approach towards artistic maturity for combat scenes. Because of the lingering feelings and impressions after completing this volume, I'll go ahead and give it a 5.

Oh My God. I don't know why but for the last few days, I'm only reading stories with sad backstories.
I got so emotional reading this one!

Zenitsu, the human embodiment of a panic attack with a sword, screams louder than his thunder breathing
Inosuke Hashibira, the wild boar boy who thinks shirts are optional and common sense is FERAL.
The mountains, spiders, zombie-like Demon Slayers... all were spooky!

And I loved Rui's sad backstory. Cried? YES

What I love about Demon Slayer is that it gives a great character to each and everyone including the villains. My favourite manga series!!!

Best volume so far! I can't believe how awesome this story is, Tanjiro, Nezuko, Inosuke and Zenitsu are SO strong, and they area surprising me every single time. The final battle was incredible, really can't wait to see that in the anime.

The backstory for Rui had me almost in tears, poor soul.

This was another great volume and just focuses on Tanjiro and others as they continue their fight against the Arachnid demons and we get to see awesome fight of Tanjiro and Nezuko teaming against Rui whose the leader of the group and we get to see his dark and sad origin as he was just a guy who wanted a family and understand love and then Giyu and Shinobu come in to save them and its getting interesting, the battles. You feel for the demons but also not in a way. The drama here is sublime but ow they have to deal with the threat of Shinobu in a way and its gonna be interesting. The art featuring the ladies was so good and the fight sequences especially when Tanjiro uses the fire dance style feels like watching an anime while reading the manga.

5/5 estrellas.

Fue tremendo tomo. Sí, sí, de principio a fin. Simplemente me pregunto, ¿cuándo va a ser el día en que no llore con la historia de un demonio?

Ésto es increíble.

This series continues to be a delight.

With all our main heroes facing off against the spider family we have some tough situations they must escape. This one is the highlight of Tanjiro verses a crazy woman spider who hates her sister, and Inosuke facing off against his toughest oppent yet. When all looks lost we have two new arrivals, mysterious corps members, who decide to deliver the justice these demons deserve.

This is basically one big action set piece. There's couple of funny moments but for the most part this is one big ass battle. It's also really fucked up, some deaths make me wonder if this is really just rated teen instead of mature. Also, the new characters kick a lot of ass. The ending leaves off on a "oh shit" cliffhanger that makes you want to read the next.

This series really maintains high quality by giving us a great cast and badass fights. While not as funny as the last volume it's still super enjoyable. A 4 out of 5.

So far this is my favorite volume! I loved this episode on the anime and I loved it just the same in the manga. I found this volume super sad and I could empathize with Rui a lot I cried so much when he died and we got to see his story and how he passed on. Also we got the appearance of two hashira Tomioka and Kocho. I loved seeing Tomioka again and I can't wait for the next volume 😍

****Actual Rating 3.5 Stars****

Tanjiro is hands down why I’m still reading this series. His compassion yet fierceness towards both humans and demons is awe inspiring, and the scene at the end between him and Rui, and the showing of Rui’s past, made me cry because it was just so powerful and what made me bump the rating up a half star. Tanjiro is truly a hero and I love him.

There was a lot more action and “show” instead of “tell” in the storytelling which made for a much faster paced volume than 4 was. Also there was hardly and Inosuke or Zenitsu so no screaming, thank goodness! The biggest problem with this volume was there were too many spiders and spider demons still, ew! And since we’re still in the mountains at the end of this volume there will probably be more in the next one, double ew!

Still very much invested in Tanjiro only and will continue reading for now for him, and we’ll see how things go from here!

‼️Content‼️

Language: hell (as a place); gee; damn

Violence: injuries and blood (PG-13 to R); fighting with weapons and hand to hand (PG-13 to R); a child murdered their parents after becoming a demon (the action is not shown, only the bodies and pools of blood left behind); a father tried to stab his own child turned into a demon; a demon is beheaded and puts it back on; a demon’s head, arms, and body are cut off/apart (R); a demon balls up people in “yarn” and melts them to death (the melting is not shown); a tree is knocked on top of a demon; a person is diced up (R)

Sexual: a guy’s clothes are melted off leaving him naked (nothing beyond a bare butt is shown)

Other: demon-vampire like beings attack, kill, eat, and turn humans and generally look gross; a fire god is mentioned; a character is tied up and left hanging in a tree; characters see visions of their dead family members

This is the volume, in my opinion, that it gets really good.

It’s not so much the brilliant combo attack of Tanjiro and his sister that steals the day; it’s the humanization of the demons, the regret they feel once their strings have been cut. In the end, it’s all about empathy, not just these fantastic battles.

Φλύαρο, υπερβολικά φλύαρο με τα backstories των δαιμόνων που τράβηξαν πολύ. Και η αναμέτρηση κράτησε πολύ. Στο τεύχος αυτό τόσο ο Τάντζιρο, όσο και ο Ινόσουκε, τα βρίσκουν σκούρα με τον δαίμονα Ρούι (και τους διαβολικούς ιστούς του) που δείχνει ανίκητος για τα μέτρα τους. Κι όμως αυτός είναι χαμηλά στην ιεραρχία των Κιζούκι. Δηλαδή όταν συναντήσουν τους ανώτερους τι θα γίνει; Θα τους λιώσουν σαν αλοιφή; Ευτυχώς καθαρίζει ο (καταθλιπτικός) χασίρα Τομιόκα που μάλλον έτυχε να περνάει από κει. Το σκοινί που έδεσε σαν σαλάμι τον Ινόσουκε γιατί του έσπασε τα νεύρα τι το ήθελε;
