Carnby Kim is the author of Sweet Home who also made other works such as City of the Dead Sorcerer, Bastard, Unknown Code, PIGPEN, Shotgun Boy and Flawed Almighty.
Hyun is a reclusive high schooler struggling with trauma and suicidal tendencies. He spends each day just barely clinging on to life, hating his family for turning a blind eye to everything he's suffered through and escaping from reality by spending all his time on the internet. He's finally pushed over the edge after receiving news that his parents and sister were killed in a car accident and he's forced to live alone in a shanty apartment on nothing but the inheritance left behind by his parents. Completely devoid of hope, he schedules his own suicide only to wake up the next day to find out that the entire world has ended and been taken over by monsters. After the plan to end his own life is interrupted, Hyun begins to wonder if the apocalypse is truly the end of the world or a chance to begin life anew.
With the world taken over by bizarre monsters, Hyun has no choice but to come out of his traumatized shell and band together with a small group of reluctant survivors who can become monsters themselves at any moment. In fact, the monsters that have destroyed the world were once human. A dangerous phenomena has begun that can warp a human being into the form of their strongest desire. If one desires to fly, they become a monster with wings. If one desires to become a body builder, they become a disfigured force of pure muscle and raw strength. If someone desires to become a model, they will become a disturbing mockery of traditional beauty standards.
Everyone is under the threat of becoming a monster in the shape of their deepest desires, and this adds extra layers of psychological depth to the apocalypse genre. It also prevents things from getting repetitive because every single monster has a unique design and personality to suit their respective desire. People constantly struggling against their own emotional trauma and wishes creates many tense scenarios that lead to some very touching transformations, death scenes and unexpected character development.
A suicidal recluse turned reluctant hero, an ex-cop fired for police brutality given a chance to redeem himself by protecting the last survivors of the human race, a failed rockstar given one last chance to bring a broken world together through her beautiful music, the redemption arcs of every single protagonist is done extremely well and the internal battles they constantly face inside themselves are often much more exciting, tense and emotional than the battles against the countless horrifying monsters they encounter.
Selepas tonton drama Korea Netflix, Sweet Home, terus cari versi webtoon-nya untuk dibaca. Pergh... masterpiece betul jalan ceritanya (berjaya habiskan baca dalam masa 1 hari). Cukup elemen2 horror, aksi, drama, slice of life dalam webtoon ni. Kalau dah tengok adaptasi dramanya, disarankan juga baca versi webtoon sebab plot drama banyak diubah, sekadar ikut dlm 60 peratus macam tu jer.

Gruesome and dark. A manga whose last chapter released this Sunday. I've been reading this for the past few months and can honestly say I am still left speechless at the very end. Incredibly compelling characters thrown into an impossible situation coupled with beautiful artwork and excellent dialogue, Sweet Home is powerful and heavy hitting.
Set in the present day, a mysterious illness plagues the world. Everyone is turning into monsters and the only way to defeat them is to be as quiet and as violent as possible. Beginning with a reluctant protagonist, the apartment building this battle takes place in is filled with every kind of fear, hate, and love someone can feel in the midst of an apocalypse. Orated through as diverse of characters as you'd expect across tenants, anything revealed to the reader has to first be figured out within the story. This narrow viewpoint makes for a gripping thriller as a lot of what's going on outside their experiences is kept in the dark and makes for a very intimate feeling horror.
A lot of the set up is akin to classic zombie flicks, but as more is revealed to the main characters the story flourishes into something with another layer of depth and recurring digs at the human psyche. I'm avoiding any spoilers so I promise this is more than a simple-minded, monster-smashing thriller. It has a lot of ugly fights, but at its core, this is more a look at what it takes to make a person afraid.
I highly recommend, but wouldn't necessarily read this one in the dark. I'm definitely considering diving more into this genre now that I've seen what it can do. 9/10
I was skeptical about adding my webtoons to read shelves but they're stories too and take a lot of time! So, here I go. I read this in the Webtoon app and this is fucking good too! I was with this from the start which was over 2 years ago! A fantastic dystopian thriller which always put me on the edge of my seat!
MASTERPIECE! Honestly this just got me so into it that I read it all under 24 hrs, it is an amazing story, it never bored me and it has a really interesting character development. You never know what's coming and that's what keeps you into the story because anything can happen at any moment. I will say of course the end was good, of course I'd add something more but still, totally worth to read. Soon a Netflix series which I am so waiting to see.
i read this way back before the pandemic even began and now i barely even remember what happened in the webtoon. i only remember bits when i was watching the kdrama adaption (which is really good! tho the plot deviated from the source material). i have to admit the characters here in the webtoon are much more complex and dynamic than the kdrama adaptation which seemed all one dimensional characters. webtoon!wook is not as uptight as drama!wook and he knows how to laugh and joke around. ms. firefighter is not originally from the webtoon ???? i never realized that when i was watching the drama until now that i'm rereading this again
i remember really liking this and getting goosebumps on some of the panel. i'll binge read this today because sweet home s2, as what i've said, change the plot to god knows what and i couldn't get pass episode 2 because it felt too much and boring at the same time so i'll just read the source material :3
I didn't expect the artwork of this to be harrowing as it was right off the bat! It was great and I think they set up Hyun-cha's character perfectly, showing us enough of his history and why he is the way he is.
Adictivo, emocionante, impredecible, grandes personajes. Recomiendo.
The song is on spotify. So after finishing story and crying my eyes out, I went to spotify, listened to it again and cried. Again. After reading Bastard I thought, "Oh, the creators cannot reach that level of badass storytelling again." But boy was I wrong. The character development, the plot lines and the characters themselves are nothing less than perfect. The conclusion was highly satisfying and I cannot wait for the netflix adaptation to come out.
This webtoon has been a two-year journey of joy, fear, and anticipation. I refuse to mention anything that would spoil the first-time readers because there are a lot of mind-blowing plot twists to look forward to. I just want to express my gratitude to the author (Youngchan Hwang) and illustrator (Carnby Kim) for creating this masterpiece. I cannot wait to watch the movie adaptation of this webtoon on Netflix. Also, I look forward to reading their future work!
i loved loved loved revisiting this post apocalyptic world. i watched the netflix show and ABSOLUTELY loved it so much! i was so intrigued by what was different and if the show did wonders for the manhwa! the monsters in the manhwa tho are fucking disturbing and i loved it for it. it just had the perfect creepy vibes! i really recommend it as fall is coming up soon! i can't wait to read more! ❤️
Ok wow. Another amazing story by Kim Carnby with outstanding artwork. Reading this after going through the pandemic hits different. Will probably read Shotgun Boy after this (because I hear Hyuk's in it.)
Damn that is a really good webtoon. I adore the drama, so I couldn't wait for the second season and decided to read this. There seem to be differences in characters but nevertheless, a good start!
I decided to binge read this after Netflix recently announced their 'Sweet Home' web series since the trailer looked promising.
I have read my fair share of webcomics dealing with 'end of the world' scenarios, and I have to say this was definitely one of the best of this genre. Suicidal teen finds himself in a world where people all around him are turning into monsters, and decides that maybe he does want to live afterall. The whole story from start to finish takes place inside a single apartment complex, which I found particularly intriguing. I loved almost all the characters, but the MC in particular was quite realistic and very likeable - which let's be honest is kind of rare when it comes to this kind of stories.
One of the major problems with webcomics is that they keep dragging on and on, and most of the time the plot seems to lose their momentum after a while. But Youngchan Hwang seemed to know what he was doing with the pacing his story. The whole concept behind the monsters was really fascinating. The ending felt very fitting to me as well. But I did hope that he would expand upon the lore a bit more instead of focusing solely on the characters. But I guess his style seems to be character-driven plots anyway. Other than this, I don’t really have any other complaints with the work. Carnby Kim's art style, as always, went perfectly with the horror theme. I liked the previous work by Hwang-Kim duo as well, but 'Sweet Home' was honestly so much better than the 'Bastard'. Will definitely be keeping my eyes out for any future works by them.
I really enjoyed this! Hyun's character development was interesting to see, and the idea of the monsterization was really fun(but terrifying. Definitely terrifying). However, I would have appreciated more of an overarching story rather than short story arcs. Also, I don't know how I feel about the ending. I understand that writing a satisfying ending to a zombie apocalypse type story is really hard, but the open ending left so many world-building questions unanswered. But I guess that's the point of an open ending.
All in all, this was an amazing story and is definitely worth reading.
I finished it a few moments ago and it was a RIDE! One of the most satisfying character development of the MC. I gave this 10/10 because there was no dull moment in it, the back stories of the characters were interesting, The ending was just perfect in my opinion, especially with the background music accompanied.
