I loved the little footnotes at the bottom of some of the recipes where the women recalled their memories about making things or watching their mothers in the kitchen. These are solid, unfussy, and simple recipes that have stood the test of time. I plan in using a lot of these recipes as a base to experiment and make them my own.
Did I just spend a Sunday afternoon reading a cookbook from start to finish? Yes, I did.
I can't wait to try a bunch of the recipes in this book. the ones I'm most excited to try are white bread, grape pie and tomato pie. I always thought I needed a special machine to make non-dessert bread. I can't wait to pick up some yeast and make fresh bread for sandwiches! I've also never heard of grape pie and now I can't wait to make one.
I did take it down to 4 stars, because more info on a couple of things would have been helpful. I mean, I'm not a Michelin chef. It says "the juice of one lemon"-I have no earthy idea how to juice a lemon.
Also, what is "divided" milk?
I guess more information for novice bakers would have made this an even better book for me.
The Oatmeal Cake recipe is the same as one that my Mom has made for years and is fabulous. Also made the Rhubarb pie and it turned out great. The Pinwheel Date Filled Cookies were worth the effort and were a big hit at the cookie exchange that I brought them to this year and my family loved them too.
I sat and read this entire cookbook the day I purchased it. I am super excited to follow the recipes. The recipe notes that the journalist compiled from the women in the Amish community make every recipe seem filled with love before you even step in the kitchen.
I Love this cookbook! Full of Baked Goods recipes that I grew up with... I'm Pennsylvania Dutch/German not Amish, though we lived very close to Lancaster... This book brings back great memories of my Moms' and Grandmothers' baking... 5 Stars from me... :)
I loved every bit of this! I added it to my amazon cart. Making bread has always fascinated me, and this book seems interesting and easy enough. I can’t wait to get started!
I liked the information on the history of the Amish and little details with the recipes. I bookmarked a few to try but many had Lard in it or too many eggs for me to make it allergy friendly.
