Rate this book
A deadly secret. An evil plot. And a race against time to save England from disaster.

London, 1899—When a mysterious packet is stolen from a diplomatic courier, Sherlock and Lucy are called upon to recover it, before its ominous contents fall into the wrong hands. Their best hopes for success lie with a pretty young bookstore attendant, and her father, the kindly old bookstore owner.

As they work to recover the stolen packet, the Baker Street gang uncovers a dark, tangled web of intrigue, and an evil plot that could very well bring all of England to its knees. When a notorious criminal is found dead in the bookstore basement, and the bookseller is arrested for the crime, the danger becomes very real, and very personal.

Can Holmes and Lucy find the perilous packet, catch the murderous mastermind, and foil the fiendish plot? Or will the case of the bookseller prove to be the Baker Street team’s final chapter?

Anna Elliott is an author of historical fiction and fantasy. She enjoys stories about strong women, and loves exploring the multitude of ways women can find their unique strengths. She was delighted to lend a hand with the Sherlock & Lucy series, and thrilled to continue a new spin-off series featuring Becky and Flynn. Her first series, the Twilight of Avalon trilogy, is a retelling of the Trystan & Isolde legend. She wrote her second series, The Pride & Prejudice Chronicles , chiefly to satisfy her own curiosity about what might have happened to Elizabeth Bennet, Mr. Darcy, and all the other wonderful cast of characters after the official end of Jane Austen’s classic work.

Not quite as good as the other books that I have read in this series. It was a bit too complex for such a short story.

I do like a good Sherlock Holmes case mainly because of Watson's narratives and 'his' approach to storytelling. I don't mind the sharing of the narrative with Lucy as it does provide a second viewpoint and interpretation of facts, but I'm curious if it is necessary. In the first book of this series I read, it was primarily just Watson and Lucy, and there, it made sense. Here, Lucy's narrative exists just to draw other characters in as if running a parallel storyline.
The Body in the Bookseller's is a decent short story and has all the qualities expected in this series. The lore characters are true to ACD's originals and the new creations slot in well but are perhaps a little too much as it diminishes Holmes' uniqueness.
The plot is solid, albeit a tad predictable (mainly, I believe because it is a short story), and the villain was easy to spot.
The thing that spoilt this book was the shooter in the Reading Room of the museum. Their story was unnecessary and did nothing to aid the overall narrative as it made some aspects simply too contrived and coincidental. There were surely better ways to achieve the same results.

Although advertised as a short story, THE BODY IN THE BOOKSELLER'S is more of a novella (or novelette) length work. As in past tales, the modus operandi of Veley and Elliott is to put forth the mystery from more than one point of view. In this adventure, Dr. Watson and Lucy James Kelly are our storytellers.

Once again, Holmes and Watson have been summoned by Mycroft Holmes to solve a crime of national security… dare I say, worldwide security? Holmes and Watson, and Lucy and Jack find themselves pitted against a slippery bunch of possible spies and murderers who seem to have little actual connection to one another. This one seems to be not so elementary.

As I work my way through this series, I always find myself looking forward to the next mystery to be solved by Sherlock Holmes and company.

Another fun read

This is the third book I have read in the series. These are fun quick reads that add Lucy sherlocks daughter into the mix. The detail and character development are great. You do not have to read these in order to enjoy them. This book revolves around the theft of a diplomatic pouch with a deadly powder inside. The ending is a surprise after several twists and turns. I look forward to reading more of the series.

There was a lot of shifting of the person who might be the culprit in this one. I found part of the story less than fun- the romantic talk by Lucy and the bookseller's daughter. But generally this was a good one and followed the path of many others. The S Holmes and daughter and Jack and Watson bunch are good at ferreting out info and putting their heads together to make sure the bad guys get caught.,

Wonderful novel!

As I knew before I began reading this story this was, as were the 20 previous stories in this series, an incredible, informative and pleasing read. Start to finish... In characterization and as descriptive and fulfilling of complete thought. I am pleased to have read this. Thank you Anna and Charles! An incredibly great job. As usual!!!!

1899. Holmes and Watson are called in by Mycroft to investigate because a packet has been stolen from a diplomatic courier. As their investigation proceeds people are soon attacked, but then a body is discovered. Can Holmes and friends solve the case.
Another enjoyable and well-written Victorian mystery i this series, with its group of likeable characters.

Fun and quick read! Long enough to develop characters to a point in which I cared for them. Short enough to keep a perfect pace. I loved reading from two different perspectives (Watson and Lucy). I did find some grammatical errors but they weren't a big deal where I would only give 4 stars. Will definitely be reading more of this series.

Not sure whether totally back into reading mode because felt as if a little was missing, here and there, but overall liked the story, and hesitated to rate lower because I have brain fog at times so do not with that to affect the score because any issues I had could be me and not the story overall.

Great read

Oh, this one was fun. I laughed several times.... I really enjoy the rumblings of what's coming in the future. The Germans keep showing up in intrigues and I realize these stories are on the cusp of WWI....

A good story for a rainy day. The characters are true to Conan Doyle's stories. Just enough plot twists to make it exciting. I'd recommend it to Holmes fans.
