The ultimate cure that could heal any disease? Crazy.

That's exactly what research scientist Marian Creighton has always believed about her father's quest, even if it does stem from a desire to save her sister Ellen from the genetic disease that stole their mother from them. But when her father falls into a coma after drinking a vial of holy water believed to contain traces of residue from the Tree of Life, Marian must question all of her assumptions. He's left behind tantalizing clues that suggest he's crossed back in time. Insane. Until Marian tests his theories and finds herself in the Middle Ages during a dangerous peasant uprising.

William Durham, a valiant knight comes to Marian's rescue and offers her protection . . . as his wife. The longer Marian stays in the past, the more she cares about William. Can she ever find her father and make it back to the present to heal her sister? And when the time comes to leave, will she want to?

Big beefy knights. Romance. Danger. Ahh. There’s not much I love more than time traveling back to the age of chivalry all while sitting in my air conditioned living room with a large iced tea at my side…and that’s exactly the sort of pleasure I had while reading Come Back to Me, Jody Hedlund’s latest and greatest.

Don’t let the whole time travel thing throw you off. The story doesn’t get all science geeky on you. The premise ties in to some holy water that was used during the crusades, water that contains residue from the tree of life. That’s as technical as it gets, which works fine for me because once I met Sir William Durham, I didn’t really care how or why the heroine Marian Creighton gets there. I just wanted to read about their blossoming romance because sweet mercy! Will gets the swoon-worthy badge of the year for sure.

The story starts out just a hair too slow for my tastes, but once you’re hooked, go ahead and order Dominoes for dinner for a few nights because you’re not going to put this one down.

Definitely more than 5 stars.

First, let me say: Outlander what? Jamie Fraser has nothing on Will Durham. Now that's out of the way, what an amazing story!

The concept and premise are original and intriguing: special waters that cure all maladies and allow one to slip back in time? As far-fetched as it sounds, the author did an amazing job with plausibility, setting up the science behind it and the proof that goes with it.

Marian is a scientist looking for a cure for her sister. When her father falls into a coma, she travels to England to find out what happened. And that's when she starts having "visions" of a man in another time.

William Durham lives with the guilt of his half brother's death, even though it wasn't his fault. He knows war and the pain that comes from it, but when he sees an intriguing woman in what he thinks are visions, he's surprised at the peace she brings to his mind and heart.

When Marian slips back into 1381, she's confronted with real danger she didn't plan for. Will saves her and soon offers her marriage for added protection.

The realities of life in the late Middle Ages are a shock but the longer she spends in this time with Will, the less she wishes to return.

The writing is excellent and the story is absolutely unputdownable. I can't wait for the next book in the series!

I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.

#1 This is a long review, so pull up a chair and grab a bowl of popcorn. You’ll be here awhile. #2 When I read a review, I want substantial information. So I will not skimp on the details. Which may mean some spoilers, so watch out.

Stars: 4

Synopsis: Marian Creighton was unprepared for her father’s death...and even more unprepared to travel back in time to the Middle Ages in search of a fantastic cure for all diseases. Will she be able to survive in the 14th century long enough to find her father and the cure to heal her sister?

Come Back to Me was one of those books—you walk away from it pleased, having enjoyed the story if not found yourself lost in it, but once you take the time to think about it, you realize several things were off about it. That’s what I call an enjoyable experience. The actual process of reading the book is five-star—holds your attention, can’t put it down, you read through smoothly—but the book itself was just lacking in certain arenas. Like the ones that keep the book fresh in your mind for months to come, so that you can jump into the sequel with gusto, or ones that make you gush in your review, even if you don’t write it until six months later.

As you can tell, Come Back to Me lacked the gushing-worthy elements. *looks around* See? No gushing. Crazy, right?

What’s crazy is that I think I liked the technicalities of this book the best. The plot, the mechanics, all that. I loved the way Jody Hedlund chose to depict time travel. There are so many options—you can go the Marvel route and be as scientific as possible; the Back to the Future method of sticking with unique but not too complex; or be as fantastical as you can and keep the technical stuff on the level of a children’s show (in other words, call it magic). Of course, when you’re talking Christian time travel, you’ve got a lot of other things to factor in. Namely, God.

Which is why I really like how the Waters of Time series focuses on real history and Christian mythology while weaving in a bit of quantum physics to make things seem a wee bit more realistic (the physics don’t come into play until the second book, though). It was the perfect balance, and the way Hedlund wrote it was both a little fantastical, a bit scientific, kinda spiritual...and, in the end, almost believable.

The plot was good—if not a bit cliché in some areas (the ones not involving time travel)—and the pacing as well. The beginning was weird, though. Slow, because we didn’t meet Will (or at least travel back for more than a minute) until way later, but also really fast, because a lot transpired within just a few chapters. After that, things flew by (which is not necessarily a bad thing, I suppose).

The touch of suspense was lovely, playing into a lot of the loose ends that are left for the sequel, so suffice it to say that once you finish this book, you’ll be ready for the next one.

All this said, Hedlund’s writing wasn’t up to par with some of her other works. First of all, I was missing the flavor—especially in the contemporary scenes, which read like historical scenes. Hedlund really struggled to get out of the 19th and 14th centuries, and it showed. There were times when I had to pause and remember Marian was a female pharmacist (which, if you consider Linnea from The Heart of a Cowboy, isn’t that big of a deal) to remind myself that this was a present-day time travel novel.

She also seemed to be doing more telling than showing, and I feel like there was some emotional connection or theme or character arc that was missing.

On that note, why do I feel like she tries to do something different for each series? And I don’t mean in terms of plot, setting, and characters. I mean, she found something that worked. The Bride Ships. That was series was perfect. I didn’t realize how much I loved it until I started reading her new series—the Colorado Cowboys and this one. It was the perfect balance between passionate romance, inspiring faith messages, and engaging plots. But the beauty of that series...the quality of the romance, the depth of the characters, the power of the themes...is exclusive to that one. It’s as if she decided to cull all that from her other series, leaving them hollow in comparison. She found something that worked...but she hasn’t kept doing it.

Maybe that’s a little harsh or I’m just not able to see the good parts of these two series like I was the Bride Ships.

Either way, I know the characters in Come Back to Me were just not on-par with most of Hedlund’s others (Bride Ships or no). Will had potential, but the story obviously wasn’t about him, because he had very little screen time and seemed to be almost disregarded. As if he were only there for the plot and the romance, not to have his own story, his own experiences, and his own character arc.

Such blatant inequality. *shakes head*

But then…Marian didn’t really have much of an arc either. For all of her problems, all of her doubts, all of her struggles...she doesn’t really experience much change. None of that is ever really dealt with.

It could be that this was a plot-driven novel and that the characters were just there to move the plot along (newsflash: only works with mysteries)...or it could be that the book was simply to short to deal with all of that. I don’t know. I just know that these two didn’t reach their full potential, which is always a shame.

Neither did their romance.

Now. Before I go into that, I will say that certain aspects of their romance—i.e., the physicality of it—have been dissed by many reviews of this book, some calling it “Christian erotica.” That, my friends, is actually a thing (don’t ask me how...it just is...it’s a case where the rose isn’t necessarily defined by its name). And this...this is not Christian erotica. Not even close. I have read way more passionate Christian romances and, worse, I have read Christian romances that are way more focused on physical attraction than this one.

So if you have been turned away by such reviews, let me assure you that they don’t know what they’re talking about (no offense). Yes, this romance does get a little physical, but like I said. This ain’t nothing. And, yes, it is a marriage of convenience, so you’ve got that to deal with (I’m beginning to hate MoCs, by the way, so I’m not gonna comment on that). However, I will say that this romance wasn’t purely physical. There was great potential for this deep and abiding emotional and spiritual connection between Will and Marian...but guess what.

The same thing happened to the romance that happened to the characters. There wasn’t enough time for development, apparently, and I feel like so many scenes weren’t written. Scenes in which Will and Marian got to know each other and grow alongside each other. Scenes in which their romantic relationship—basically their marriage—became part of their individual arcs and vice versa. Scenes in which they bonded over something others than being stuck with each other. I mean, there was like one scene. And I loved it. And I wanted it to go on forever.

But it didn’t. So we were kinda left with just Will going on about how purty Marian was. Which, yes, is annoying. But at least there was potential for more. I feel like so many other romances—even and especially Christian ones—don’t even have potential for more. Allow me to direct you to my review of Hooked on You and my review of Never Miss. The foundation of the romances in these two books literally was just physical attraction. At least in Come Back to Me, I felt like there was this unseen something lurking in the shadows that was the backbone of Will and Marian’s relationship. We just...didn’t get to see it.

Dude, this was like a Christmas present that your forgetful aunt wrapped fifty times and you eventually just left there half-opened. That’s exactly was this was like.

Okay, seriously, though, no one forgets that they wrapped a present. Forty-nine times over.

Lastly, there was the faith elements. Marian and her dad are scientists...and Christians. And the entire plot of this series revolves around supernatural occurrences. So naturally, you have two elements that seem to contend (I personally don’t think science and God contend...God invented science, after all, but that’s a discussion for something other than a book review). Despite that, I feel like all of that...all the spirituality...was glossed over. Marian believed in God and she believed in science (perhaps a little more so) and that was that. Until her dad dies suddenly and she gets swept into the mystery of time travel. Then it seemed like she started doubting God and having some spiritual struggles. But guess what. None of that was ever dealt with or resolved. There was no substance to her faith—only a thin shred of belief and nothing more. Most of that is due to what I stated above—she had no arc.

As for Will? Pft, nothing. Poor dude didn’t get nothin’ outta this book but grief, bless him.

So the depth of Christianity in here was (1) God created the Tree of Life and (2) Will’s sister is a nun. That’s basically it. And here I was hoping for some great theme about trusting God and following His will for your life...or taking the Gospel to all time periods...or being a light to others...or having faith during the hard times...or something.

On top of that, what did she give me? A birth control comment. I’m beginning to think that Hedlund is pro-birth control (I’m currently discussing the portrayal of birth control in Christian fiction in the comments section of this review, if you’d like to join). Personally, I don’t appreciate that. At all. But at this point, I’ve complained about enough stuff. This honestly reads like a negative review, so I’m sure you’re asking yourself why the heck did Grace rate this four stars?

Like I said. Five-star experience. I enjoyed reading this book. I couldn’t put it down. I breezed through it so quickly that apparently I missed all the good stuff. I mean, if y’all want more positivity—I liked the historical elements. Gotta love insurrection and peasant uprisings, am I right? I’m right. Fighting for social justice is always a fan-favorite. And I was super excited for the sequel when I finished this, so that’s a good sign. Hungry for more, right?

Long story short…if you just want an entertaining and unique read, then, dude, this is perfect. But if you’re like me and you want to become invested and involved in the characters and you want a story that leaves an imprint on your heart, then may I direct you to another novel? (I may? Ooh, goody! I’ll leave a recommendation for you in the comments, then!) So, yeah, it was a five-star experience reading a three-star book. So here we are with four stars and a much longer review than I’d anticipated. This is why I warn you people. I ramble. They call me The Rambler. Oh, I’m The Rambler. I ramble on and on and on and on.

And, yes, that is a parody of The Wanderer by Dion. I’m so glad you noticed. *winks*

The unique concept was interesting and kept me reading, but I wasn't invested in the characters.

I liked the writing style and the plot twists, but I wonder what the message was supposed to be. Faith was at the forefront, but not necessarily in a realistic way. I would have wanted to see a discussion on the morality of bypassing God to get healing from holy water instead. No prayer involved or spiritual experience. I don't think there was anything wrong with it, but I just wasn't into it.

The romance was fine, but also felt based more on physical attraction than emotional connection. Again, nothing really wrong with this, but I wasn't into it.

Probably won't continue in the series. Read it if you like time travel, medieval times, right person wrong time, and family reconciliation.

Tropes & Triggers: only kissing but a few suggestive scenes of a married couple desiring each other, speculative Christian fiction, time travel, marriage of convenience.

'What had she gotten herself into?'

I have been a fan of Jody Hedlund's since her first book, which still sits on my shelves. So, of course, I want to read everything she writes. However, as a rule, I don't much care for time travel. There are a very few authors who have done it well that I've read. I love Hedlund's work, so I decided that I wanted to read her take on time travel. Boy, was I in for a surprise!

Hedlund's take on time travel is so unique that I was immediately intrigued and totally invested in the story. Imagine, if you will, that drinking a vial of holy water from the fourteenth century could cure a person in the present day. I think one would agree that it is a unique premise. Imagine again, finding that vial and barely putting your lips to it and being transpo'What had she gotten herself into?'

rted back to 1381 England. Well, that did it for me. I love the medieval setting and Hedlund has proven more than once that she does this genre well indeed.

Will Durham, a most valiant knight, rescues Marian from a beating and offers her protection as his wife. His wife! Wait a minute! The ramifications of this particular situation could be long reaching and possibly very uncomfortable. But Marian goes along with it, hoping that she an get back to the present day with the vials of holy water needed to heal her father, who is in a coma, and her sister, who has a genetic disease. Then, on top of everything else, England is in the midst of a dangerous peasant uprising. (Hedlund does her research well and includes actual historical events in all her books.) Now, about Will Durham. What a powerful and totally swoon worthy hero this dude is. His character is a sight to behold. A true and valiant, most chivalrous knight. And soon Marian is wondering if she really wants to go back to the present day.

I was completely captivated by this book. I have always enjoyed Hedlund's books and she has proven she is incredibly good at switching genres effortlessly. Although I must admit, I am completely partial to her medieval settings. She is tops there! I cannot WAIT for the second in this series! I can highly recommend this one.

After reading the last time traveling book, I vowed not to read another one any time soon, but this one sounded interesting...so request.
Marian is devoted to her job so she has little time for dating. She sinks all of her time into her research with the intent to find a cure for her sister suffering from a terminal disease that took her mother's life. She receives a call from the hospital that her dad is in a coma with no evidence why. His office and home have been ransacked and vandalized, so Marian decides to unlock his safe deposit box to see what these trespassers are after.

An odd discovery, she finds notes and vials of holy water and residue from the Tree of Life, which is also a vessel to travel back in time. Marian decides to sample the vials and travel to the Middle Ages to find more to save her sister and also where she thinks her father is actually living outside of his present body and time.

It soon becomes a romantic love story when Marian falls for a knight and indecisive about her return to present time. It was very uplifting and enlightening with the biblical references and verses throughout.
Thanks NetGalley for the Arc in exchange for my review.

Oh my word, I am in LOVE! 🥰 This book was so amazing!! 🤩 The only reason why I put this down was because of work, but when I got home, I immediately picked it back up! I was hooked from the very first page and I now need MORE. Seriously, time travel books are some of my favorite!! 😍😍

Everything about this book was AMAZING! I loved the characters, the plot, the romance....really there wasn’t anything that I really disliked. The whole tree of life thing seemed a little off to me in the beginning, but the more I got into the book, the more I realized how unique of a plot line for a time travel book it was! That was definitely one thing I loved was how unique that plot line was!!

Jody Hedlund hardly ever writes characters that I don’t like, but Mariana and Will are probably my favorite! I LOVED everything about them! Mariana was so head strong and stubborn but I loved how she was willing to listen to Will (at times...if you know, you know) and follow him. She was so lovable and I loved how she loved everyone so wholeheartedly. I definitely related to her on quite a few things, not a lot but on a few things.

Will....seriously a total heart throb of a fictional guy, lol! I loved him so much! I loved how protective and ferociously he loved and protected his family! He also was so gentle and kind. He and Mariana literally were the cutest together!! 🥰

I literally could gush about this book forever, but it’s late so I won’t. All I know is that you NEED to read this especially if you are a Lisa Bergren’s River of Time fan! Ugh, this book was just so good!! 😍 I’m just sad it’s over! 🥺

There was quite a bit of kissing, wanting, and noticing in this book for more romance sensitive readers. I would rate it probably around a PG-13 just because of all the romance and some violence in this book.

Disclaimer:

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest and thoughtful review, courtesy of the Revell Reads program. Although I was interested in the storyline, I opted not to finish the book. The Lord has given me passion for purity, and I felt that it would not be beneficial for me to continue reading the book, based on the nature of the romantic content. However, I will give a thoughtful and honest review of what I did read, which was close to 60% of the novel.

Synopsis

Past and present mingle in this historical fiction science fiction novel. When Marian’s conspiracy-chasing father, Arthur, falls into a coma while on the trail of a cure for his late wife’s ailment, Marian follows up on his lead. Soon, she finds herself straddling the present time and the Middle Ages as she works to save her family.

Characters

The first third of the novel is written from a third-person limited voice, from the perspective of a pharmacologist named Marian. Marian, who describes herself as being “married to her work,” strives to find a cure for her sister’s illness, while also resenting that her father places his own life’s work, finding a cure for his late wife’s sickness, above his present life and family members. Marian has a deep respect for her sister, Ellen, who has committed her life to serving others. She is also good friends (and insists on maintaining friendship only) with a coworker named Jasper. Harrison, another significant character, is a longtime family friend who takes Marian under his wing.

The second third of the book introduces the perspective of Will, a 14th-century English lord, as well as a widower. After sharing some very abnormal experiences, Will and Marian strike a fast romance.

Positive Elements

Next to allegory, time travel is one of my favorite themes— not so much because of the historical settings, but because I enjoy reading about philosophies of time, embedded in fiction. I think one of my favorite parts of the book was the discussion of time. I also felt that the author did a good job integrating the time periods by using a shared geographical point.

Additionally, I felt that discussions of scientific matter were handled well, not “dumbed down” for the reader. (When material is oversimplified, I’m more inclined to wonder whether the author understands what she is describing.)

Why I Didn’t Finish

As alluded to in the earlier disclaimer, the treatment of romance was a bit too graphic for me. While I am glad that the author portrayed (most) romantic expressions within the context of marriage, I still felt that the descriptions were excessive and too intense. I stopped reading to protect my heart.

Additionally, I felt very uncomfortable with Will’s passionate internal dialogue, as well as treatments of his behaviors as a romantic partner. Will’s actions were described as forceful, and I found his internal monologues rather disturbing. From what I had read so far, the narrative felt like a positive description of experiences that felt almost like assault.

Overall Takeaway

While the plot was interesting and I would have liked to see how the novel ended, the romance was a bit overwhelming for me. I say this as an umarried young woman with a very conservative view of purity. This isn’t a book I would recommend.

I have mulled over this review a lot & have struggled with it since I finished this book! I've edited like 17x😜 because of my mixed feelings!

This was my first time travel/dual time period book. I had my reservations but it came highly recommended (Thanks Gretchen! 😉) ... and it was really good! The story was very unique to me and very unpredictable which was so fun.

What I didn't like was the lack of solid Biblical/spiritual content. I know the time travel needed to be explained but I found the way it was done to be creepy & dark (being in a coma while in another time period, seeing/hearing things in a different state of consciousness-I didn't like it.) I expected more content about the Lord and the character's personal relationship with Him especially given the weird circumstances. The spiritual emphasis throughout the book was largely on the healing power of the water.

As far as the romance, I truly enjoyed the story behind it. I liked the connection Marian and Will had. I enjoyed seeing how Marian taught Will the value of friendship within a romantic relationship.
What I do find with Jody Hedlund though, is that she develops the love story around physical attraction and desire to the point that it feels more lusty than romantic.

Overall...

…The story was very creative and shockingly good. I usually find Jody Hedlund's books to be very cliché and predictable...very 'cat and mouse' with chasing each other, then pushing away.

In that aspect, I really liked this story and found it hard to put it down. I enjoyed the experience of being transported back in time with Marian. It was so interesting to hear her very 21st century thoughts during the Middle Ages. Despite the unrealistic theme…it all felt surprisingly realistic! Which is why it was such a compelling read.

The romance between Will and Marian was romantic and somehow, Jody made it all make sense. There were times where the story could've gone in a direction that would complicate the relationship, make it overly dramatic, confusing, cliché etc. But somehow Jody made the relationship flow effortlessly and realistically.

This story definitely exceeded my expectations.

Current Day & 1381 England

Time travel novel by Jody Hedlund! I've long enjoyed her historical and historical romance novels. Time travel is a departure from her usual work.

It took me a little while to get engaged in Come Back to Me, but once I was, I quickly slipped in to the Middle Ages and the tale of Marian and Will. What I found most fascinating about this novel was how the past and present could interact. Marian learned how to travel between the two time periods, but there are some unclear details about her time travel and I anticipate more will be revealed in the next novel of the series.

Loved the historical details about the Middle Ages that were included in the pages. I look forward to the next in the series.

The cover is spectacular.

My gratitude to publisher Revell for a complimentary copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Phew! You’re going to need your fainting couches and fans handy for this one, ladies. However, I have to stay off by saying just how blown away I am at Jody Hedlund’s cleverness. I’m not always a fan of time-travel books because it’s hard to make that time-space continuum leap believable. Usually it’s a little eye-roll enduring or been done a millions times before. Not this story. While, yes, you’ll have to suspend believe for the fantasy elements, the way the character goes back in time is just so clever by the author! Bravo.
Ok, back to the fainting couches. The chemistry between Marion and Will just sizzles off the page. It’s pretty much everything you’d expect from a 21st century woman and a knight from 1310. I’ve never seen Outlander but I’d imagine this is sort of a clean version of that.
One of my favorite read of the year!

It seems like Jody Hedlund has been experimenting with different genres of late. I recently read a western, and now she has ventured into time travel. I'll be honest, neither of these genres are my favorite and I only read them because she is an author I trust. Somehow, she never disappoints. I was blown away by her creativity in this book. I confess I struggled to really get into the contemporary side of the story line at first, but once the past comes in, oh my, I couldn't put the book down. So happy I got a chance to read this and I cannot wait for book two...I just have to know how everything comes together!!! Kudos to Jody Hedlund. You remain my favorite!

DNF review: DNF around chapter 9. While I love Time Travel, this was very much speculative CF I guess? Time travel I know is sci-fi and whatnot, but I wasn't really enjoying how holy water was the means to traveling partially? I also wasn't enjoying all the physical attraction basis for the main couple. Main guy with his chiseled body LOL - time travel waking up in her bed under the sheets (I believe I am remembering this right lol) randomly I was like GIRL hahahaha wat cracked me up if I am honest but overall, it just wasn't for me mostly for the time travel things.

Happy Publication Day!

This was so good. Full of adventure. Jody Hedlund is one of my favorite romance authors and this one was wonderful. She always write an honest, heartfelt , realistic narrative.
The heroine was a headstrong, confident female who has to rethink everything to survive. Fiercely independent, she tries to do it all alone, just to find out that she’s going to have to trust someone to get through this.
The Hero was honorable, protective and passionate. His confidence radiated off him. The romance was breathtaking and the chemistry was electric.
This is a HEA, in case you were wondering and I can’t wait for book 2!

I don't know how I feel about this one. There were parts I loved, like time travel and the characters, but the romance was pretty steamy for a Christian book. I kept feeling like I was reading a secular romance. I think Outlander fans would like this, but if you prefer really clean books, I'd probably skip it. I also had to not think too hard about the time period the girl goes to. I really think that would have been a much more difficult transition than it was. I think I'll try the 2nd book.

Time travel back to medieval England? A star-crossed romance? Fantasy mixing with the real world in a well-thought-out way? What could go wrong? Well…a lot apparently, based on the fact that I merely skimmed the last half of the book. Come Back to Me had the makings of a brilliant, unique Christian fiction novel, but all that potential was wasted when the book turned into what was basically Christian erotica (if such a thing can exist). Enough said, I think.

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

I haven't read a time travel I liked this much in a Long time! This is a clean romance but it gives you great sexual tension! I love when a author can balance that line. Give you the chemistry but keeping it clean. This was so well done! I loved every minute of this! I loved the beginning and was a little worried it would fall into silly or unbelievable once she goes back but it stayed amazing and just got better and better! The romance was great, the story was great and the characters well developed and lovable. I think I might stay back in time for him too! Dang! Such a fun read!
A series like this would be Rivers of Time series by Lisa T Burgan.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ 3.5/5
This is one of those books that you want to completely and utterly love, yet I just wish I could change a thing or two to make it ✨perfect✨.

But first of all, let me share why this book gave me a book hangover 😂❤️

I have never read a Christian time travel book. More so, I’ve never read a time travel book at all! So when Revell offered me a review copy I was a little hesitant, to say the least. My only exposure to time travel had been through the tv show Outlander (of course, using Vidangel filters😉😌) and I just couldn’t imagine a book trying to narrate the intricacies of traveling through time.

But then, it was none other than Jody Hedlund who had written this book… and even though I had only read one of her books before, I really REALLY liked it. So I decided to give it a go.

I will speak plainly from the start, this is NOT a YA book but an Adult one. I didn’t know that when I first started reading so I didn’t expect quite some things which I will explain as I go.

First of all, the plot was superb. The way Jody mashed up the time lines was amazing. Tbh, I was a Little worried about the Holy water part and a little afraid it was going to take a dark or mystical turn. But it wasn’t like that at all!. I learned so much of the real history behind it, its legends and tales, I honestly became quite enthralled with the idea of it.

The main character, Marian, is a research scientist for a pharmaceutical company. She has poured her life and work into helping research a cure for her sister’s rare illness. Then we have her dad. Another research scientist, a genius, doing his work in London. Marian and her dad have a strained relationship but it only gets weirder when she receives an unprecedented phone call telling her that her dad, her crazy genius, wealthy and eccentric dad has fallen into a coma without explanation. That’s when Marian starts questioning everything. Who and why did this, and why are people after her dad’s research concerning time travel?

I loved the ‘’present’’ perspective! It wasn’t a cliché plot at all! We have so many unique characters and I enjoyed tremendously the fact that one of the characters represented a disabled person and he was, without doubt, one of the ones that made the book so much more interesting and fun! I’m a Harrisson fan forever lol.

Then we have the ”past” time line. I won’t mention much here because I want you to get all the feels and surprises when you start reading this book. But I will say, Jody Hedlund, did amazing research concerning that time period and I felt like a Lady of medieval times all the way through the book 😍.

I loved reading about the contrast between the past and present. Jody did an amazing job bringing that time period to life and showing us the good, the bad and the ugly. It was rich in history and adventure. I’ve probably learned more from this book alone about medieval times than from my elective medieval times college class 😂.

And the characters in the past were just AMAZING AND INCREDIBLE! That’s all I’ll say.

Having said all that, I wish to mention some things I didn’t quite like.

The romance was precious. It was honest and raw. I loved the love interest and how he did everything to make Marian happy and feel secure.

But, there were some descriptive romance scenes that kinda knocked a star from my rating.

Even though we can consider this book clean (as in there aren’t any sex scenes), intimacy is a big player in this book due to the plot and different constums of the day. We can read from the male perspective how women were seen at that time as mere objects and how desirable they were. So changing or altering that perspective wouldn’t be historically correct due to the fact that at that time, women had almost no right or say in anything.

I just want to clarify that the character growth of that male individual throughout the book was amazing. Marian, coming from a time where women have a place in society and have rights, and she, in a way, teaches this person what true love is and how to care, respect and be friends with the Woman you love. It was truly endearing.

But the romance scenes are not meant for younger audiences given the fact that they are quite descriptive. I’ll also add that due to the time period, there are some gory descriptions about violence and beheading and blood and such. Nothing crazy descriptive but nonetheless they are there.

Again, this IS an adult book, so pls have that in mind. Think Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers content level.

Wow, I didn’t think this review was going to be this lengthy 😂. If you made it here, you are amaingggg! I hope this review helps you decide if this is a good book for you!

Content: ⭐️⭐️ ⭐️ 3/5

Wowsers! I enjoy a good time travel book and this one was very satisfying! Very cleverly written and convincing idea. The beginning took me a little bit to fully connect with the story. The scene needed to be set but once that first time jump (my word for it) happened, oh my heavens! Marian seeing William Durham for the first time. And vice versa. Him seeing her. I couldn't wait for more time jumps.

Marian's reaction upon hearing about her father and her need to help him, sets in motion a lot more than she initially bargained for. Buckle up for this fun ride because it is awesome!

The contemporary aspects were well written and the suspense in them of trying to figure out what is happening as well as who is behind some of the problems. Then the history that is mixed in and spoken of in the contemporary moments and then jumping back to the past with some of those historical tidbits. So well woven together. I know I said it was a little slow at first for me, but after all the initial important info was divulged and the time jump happened, the flow of the story was great!

Now I'll be patiently waiting for the second book in this series. Oh. My. Heavens!!! I can only imagine what might happen in that one. Will we get to see more of Marian and William??? Please, please, please Ms. Hedlund say that we will!!!

Content: Clean. Time travel aspects, some moments of peril due to jumping back into the Middle Ages. Death, and some attacks occuring in the current time, but nothing overly graphic. There is talk between a married couple about being intimate but there is nothing more than kisses and them laying in bed snuggling. Everything else fades to black.

I received a copy from the publisher, Revell, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

Having read every book Jody Hedlund has written I will admit to you time travel books back to the middle ages is not the first type of book on my list.
But being that I really enjoy this author's books I figured why not give it a shot? And give it a shot I did. Well I started reading and reading and found just could not stop.
I was mesmerized by the words as I was reading in this book.
Many of the historical details in this book are actual though it is a historical fiction book we can learn a lot of fascinating details.
Spanning modern times to the middle ages we find our self in danger of not being able to return to modern times unless something of great importance is found in time.
A modern woman finds love when she travels back into the middle ages. Will this be able to be sustained before death comes calling?
Fascinating book I found myself drawn to. I look forward to continuing this series with the next book.

I finished this novel in less than 24 hours.

I stayed up too late reading (which I rarely do now that I’m a mom!) because I had to know how it ends. And although I adore the ending, I cannot WAIT for book two!

Knocked off a star because I didn’t love how flippantly the heroine treated her time-traveling beau at first. But the story! Gah! (Highly recommend for those who love a bit more Song of Solomon than Ruth).

Wow what a read! This novel has all the elements I love: history, time travel, romance-the whole package. This is a different kind of book I'm used to reading from Jody Hedlund but I knew upon reading the synopsis that it would be good. And it is, for the most part. If you're a fan of Outlander (as I am) you'll most certainly love this one. It's a page-turner for sure; I found myself unable to put it down. I had not been this invested and entertained in a good novel for a while (and that's saying a lot for me).

The characters are well-developed, the hero of the story, the handsome, Sir William Durham is everything any lady would dream of in a man. He is strong, he is protective, he is caring, he is a man of character, he is brave, you name it. Marian, the protagonist is an independent young scientist with a broken relationship with her dad and absolutely not interested in men since she is married to her work. With these two very strong characters you can be sure that a great romance will follow, and it does.

I'll stop there, I don't want to spoil anything for anyone. But this is easily a 5 star read except that...

I am saddened to have to take away 2 stars for the following reasons. First, it is very poor in faith content. The characters don't mention God, they rely on themselves and others to solve problems. And at first, the characters are attracted to each other solely by their physique, this seemed like a very superficial and carnal romance. For a book marketed as Christian Fiction, I'd expect it to mention God all throughout the book.

Secondly, historically speaking it is unrealistic that Marian would have understood Medieval English much less make herself understood in her modern American English. I love history and study it as a pastime so this inaccuracy bothered me and took away from my enjoyment.

Thirdly, and my most serious complaint is the amount of lust and carnality this novel contains. I was shocked that the author thought it okay to describe intimate scenes between the main characters in detail. There are several scenes where they kiss passionately and have lustful thoughts for each other (one even before they're married) And her physical descriptions of the male lead can easily tempt the reader to lust and fantasize if not careful. I avoid secular novels for this reason so to see this in a Christian novel was shocking. It is not a clean book.

I would not recommend this novel for teens and unmarried women.

I’m just going to say it: this may be HER BEST BOOK YET!!💓

Here me out. I’ve been a longggg time Jody fan & she’s had a solid spot on my favorite authors list for probably about 10 years or longer. I was so excited to see her write something different; with this book she gave me everything I’ve unknowingly wanted (time travel fiction) that I haven’t found yet in CF. Her blend of contemporary & medieval times, characters, & dialogue was perfection. The main characters had chemistry that was on fireeee 🔥🌶. I believed that their connection was real. The heroine was endearing & all of her modern thoughts & faux pas were realistic & humorous! & that William 😍- he is a hero knight with a heart of gold I loved reading about. While reading this book I felt like I was watching a really good movie.

I’m a big fan of romance so the fact that the parts of the story that were not as heavy on the romance kept me completely interested is saying a ton. The plot is so intriguing it really had me hooked. I devoured this book & it killed me to have to go to bed without getting to read more 😩. Not many books are like that for me anymore.

This will definitely be one of my favorite reads this year & right now it may be my favorite JH book which is saying a ton.. okay, at least like top 3 of her books. Lol.

There was never any doubt if I would enjoy Come Back to Me by Jody Hedlund, I don't think there is anything that I have read by her that I haven't liked. Some might've wondered about a plot with time travel, but I actually really like the idea of time travel since it could be plausible, it all depends on your perspective, and time travel has always appealed to my sense of adventure - I wasn't disappointed at all.

A fun twist of a time-slip. The heroine goes back in time to save her dad and ends up having to choose where to stay, the past or the present. I loved Lisa Tawn Bergren's River of Time series, so I loved this one too. A passionate romance. A marriage of convenience. And so much more. I thoroughly enjoyed this story.

A 4.5 read

I decided to reread this series and I believe it gets better and better. I love the way Jody Hedlund writes her characters and the romance between them. You wanted for both characters to get together but you will find it almost impossible. The author is clever and the storyline is just excellent. Glad I decided to reread this book and would highly recommend it to all!

Time travel books are tricky, am I right? Most of the time, you just can't think too hard or it just doesn't seem plausible but it's still fun. This author definitely nailed the plausibility with a very in depth, detailed description of the why and how of it all. Laying the foundation took pretty much half of the book. We don't actually see the time travel until half way through and honestly? I was growing impatient. Sometimes it just felt too wordy and lengthy but I know, laying the foundation is important especially in stories like this and I actually thought the idea of the time travel was interesting. I just really wanted more time with Will and Marian. They are awesome together and I just didn't get enough of them. I adored the second half of the book. I didn't want to put it down. Everyone should have a Will in their lives. 😍

I can see that the author set things up for future books and I'm excited to read them! And hopefully Will and Marian will be in those too because that would make me happy. Oh! And I love this cover.

The first half of the book gets 3.5 stars from me. The second half, 5.

Content: peril, mild violence, kissing (some thoughts about a husband wanting his wife physically, but nothing descriptive)

This book started out on the slow side for me, but with the danger and targets on Marian and Harrison, it kept me intrigued until Marian traveled to 1381 and this story totally captivated me.

Both Marian and Will came across as people who have build walls around themselves and it was fascinating to see how they challenges each other and broke those walls down.

I must say, I wasn’t sure where the authors was going with this and also how I wanted it to end. At the start I had a different ending in mind but then somewhere along the road, my preferred ending changed and I was actually heartbroken when certain events happened. Though I did see ‘the inside man’ way in advance, his true character was quite dark and full of menace once revealed and I’m expecting him to play a bigger bad guy part in the next book.

Marian’s concerns about the impact of the Holy Water was quite an ethical dilemma and I can see certain events happening and the validness of her concerns.

So, though I’m happy about Marian and Will’s ending, I do hope for a happy ending for the sisters as well and maybe even n surprise encounter for Marian with some important to her in 1382...

I enjoyed this story and will recommend it to fans of fantasy/time-travel.

It's been a long time since I read historical fiction, including time travel & romance, that's part fantasy & part actual. I usually don't read historical fiction novels, but I noticed the blurb of this one to be interesting, which made me choose it immediately. The conceptualization of the account is unique & powerful. Blending facts with fiction ain't a mean achievement! The writer has done an excellent study on the topic & it clearly shows.

Adventure, thriller, magic, medicine, romance, time-travel, what more can one ask for to get weak in the knees. The characters & pictures lay such a roller coaster journey that I couldn't help but be stuck to the novel till the end! Lying in my bedroom, enclosed by all the contemporary facilities, I questioned how it would feel to be in the 1300s.

There's part two of the novel coming up & I can't wait to read that one. I would recommend the book to all historical fiction, time-travel, romance stories fans. You people are in for a feast!
