I really enjoyed this one. To be honest, I preferred it over the first volume lmao. The character building of Yuta was solid and I just really enjoyed the arc including the way in which it ended. Looking forward to him perhaps popping up again in the later volumes :)

“My best friend did. My one and only.”

i just watched this movie a couple weeks ago while i was in michigan, and it was just everything. I was so curious to get to know yuta after being caught up with s1 and s2 of the animation, but i did not expect, not in my wildest dreams, to get so much gojo and geto backstory. but yeah, i am back in vegas now and i really wanted to pick up the manga, and here i am crying over gojo, geto, yuta, and even maki all over again! (this is a long preamble to say, i might be a little biased from just watching this adaptation, but i promise, this volume zero is so good!)

this prequel introduces us to yuta okkotsu who is a special grade jujutsu sorcerer, who is attached to a special grade cursed spirit and… i can’t say anything else without rebreaking my heart, but that is his very basic set up. But gojo comes and gets him, and brings him back to jujutsu high, where he trains alongside maki, toge, and panda (and forms special bonds with them all).

and one lost id card and one promised battle at kyoto on christmas eve later…

this volume is just… really sad. It’s also really beautiful, and so very touching, but oh my gosh it is heartbreaking on two counts. yet, a good reminder that you are worthy of living life, and sometimes people are lucky enough to have some really good people around them that will help remind them of that. (and i am reminding you of that right now, too.)

lastly, 1.) give maki the world and 2.) (even though it’s not in a manga) what the hell did he whisper…

trigger + content warnings: child death, hurt children, death, suicidal thoughts, violence, gore, battle/fighting, attempted genocide

Okay if you’ve seen the movie, you can skip the manga. The movie actually added more detail and showed every single scene, even minor ones, from the manga.

That said, the story is still sensational and I’ll likely repeat this experience with volumes 1-3 which are sitting right next to me. I’ve gotta go get my Nanami fix since he wasn’t in this volume 🤤

"You jerk! Playing with a woman's feeling like this!"

"How rude. That's pure love."

Love is the worst kind of curse.

Premise: Okkotsu Yuuta is a shy and withdrawn teenager haunted by the ghost/curse of his childhood sweetheart Rika ever since the 11 years old girl died in a car accident. As Yuuta's familiar/curse, Rika would mercilessly attack anyone who poses a threat to her beloved Yuuta --and any living girl who dares to come close to her beau.

Exhausted by the endless haunting and terror, Yuuta tries to end his life, but his death sentence is postponed when he is invited/forced to attempt a school for young sorcerers in training.

"Let's die together."

Fucking hell, that is super lovely!!!!

This prequel serves as a 'coming of age' tale and origin story for Okkotsu Yuuta, one of the four strongest sorcerers and a major supporting character from the 'Jujutsu Kaisen' main story, who we didn't know all that much about.

We follow Yuuta to the highschool for young sorcerers and meet his three colorful new classmates: an iron-willed girl who carries an enhanced sword, a quiet boy whose speaking words can be used as weapon against both humans and the 'curses', and a..... panda !? Soon we learn more about these characters and parts of their backstories. The world of the curses (demonic beings which were created by the negative emotions of the humans) and the sorcerers and the outlawed curse-workers is also expanded before our eyes, I like it.

The artwork is nice in a typical boy's manga style and it does its job nicely!

At the first half of the story, the MCs handle the smaller task of fighting minor 'curses' as Yuuta (an inexperienced newbie) tries to work together with Rika instead of fearing her, then in the later part the MCs must face off with the curse-workers, who want to get rid of the rest of the non-magical human race so only the curses and the curse-workers would remain.

The story is fast paced, effective and it doesn't drag at all. The final battle is exciting and I like how Yuuta and Rika's romance comes to an end. But somehow!?

Plus, it really isn't easy going up against one of the best curse workers in existence. LOL

After catching up to the latest JJK chapters, I decided it was about time I read the prequel. Especially, because I was confused about Yuta and his role in the story. In true JJK fashion, I'm even more confused now.

Yuta's character was solidly build up and his arc was so interesting to read about. Could've been a bit longer for my liking, but Akutami still did a really great job with characterising him on such a limited page count and ending that arc on a satisfying note.
Apart from that, the prequel also provides some interesting, but not necessarily vital, background information for the main JJK story and focusses a bit more on the characterisation of the 2nd years (here 1st years), as well as the main antagonist Geto and his plans.

This prequel doesn't necessarily answer specific questions and will probably confuse you at times, but I think it's a solid base if you want to read/watch JJK.

“I’ve always believed love manifests the most distorted curses.”

This volume was such a fun and incredibly intriguing ride.

Originally, I was not sure when to read this since it is set about a year before the events of the main story take place. I knew what it was gonna be dealing with but, well, I just didn't quite know when would be the right moment. Finally, I decided upon reading it right before the Shibuya arc starts in Vol. 10 and I think that was the perfect moment.

In this volume, we get to see a very especific event that happened, the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons that is referenced early on in the story. It has some really interesting information to fill in the gaps between the story but it is easier to appreciate it after reading The Hidden Inventory arc.

It's really impactful read right at this point.

And because of this, it broke my heart.

. “We improve more quickly when there are consequences to suffer.”

Honestly, mostly it was a very fun little adventure. What with getting to know Okkotsu Yuuta and expending time with young Maki, Inumaki, and Panda - which was wacky, too - that I got to enjoy.

I mean, it's hard to create a lot of tension when you know the exact result of everything. So, yeah, it was mostly fun to get to see them at this point in their lives.

Okkotsu is such a sweet character and I really liked him... once I got over all the similarities his story has with Itadori's. Though that was mostly funny, I'll admit. But, well, it is understandable considering this is the first thing Gege wrote for this world.

“You’re being protected, so why play the victim? I bet you’ve been passive your whole life. Without any goals. Jujutsu high ain’t that easy.”

Really, though, as much as it was, it also had its bittersweet moments, and when they came they were the bitterest, the sweetest, of them all.

The central theme of this volume is Love. And that only made my heart ache.

Sure, there are other things being explored through the story, such as strength, personal value, and morals but it all is overshadowed and tied together by love and I really enjoyed how it was handled. On both of the sides we see it.

It made me tear up and wish to be able to hug the characters with everything that was going on. The way it all made sense thanks to it, and how it tied the story together, in general, was nice and meaningful.

“I want to be like you. Strong and resilient. I want to be like that.”

This volume has got to be one of my favorites from the manga so far.

Although I did miss the rest of the characters, many of whom I haven't seen in many chapters, it was still something that latched to my heart.

Seeing more of Gojo also made me appreciate him more. And, really, if that was the only thing accomplished with this volume, I would be very happy and pleased. Since he is a very intriguing and layered character.

“You can’t control what you don’t understand. What we learn will come from trial and error.”

“This is pure love.”

Alright, yes, it was important to read this before continuing with the manga.

It made me way more emotional than I was expecting.

After much debating with myself, I decided that reading this volume before entering the whole Shibuya arc was probably best... of course, it had nothing to do with how scared I am of that arc. Nothing at all.

Either way, I am very curious, cautiously excited, to meet Okkotsu and see what the deal with him is about.

I'm not sure this volume won't destroy my heart but, hey, cannot be worse than what the future of the story has prepared, right?

Yuta's heart of gold stole my heart with only a few words.
I honestly didn't think Jujutsu Kaisen needed a prequel, but now I have to disagree. Volume 0 features valuable backstory about a handful of characters frequenting the main series (Gojo, Maki, Geto & Inumaki), while also setting up a solid foundation for the power system, one that I honestly could have benefit from reading earlier.
I'm really eager to see the movie for this volume (especially since people say it goes into even more depth than the manga!)

They better make the movie on this volume because Yuuta's arc and character are one of my favourites. I highly recommend reading this prequel before jumping onto the main series because we get to know more about Jujutsu Tech and some of the main characters better.

I recently saw the JJK0 movie and fell in love with it. It’s one of my favorite movies of all time. I decided to pick up the manga to see what the original story is like. I really enjoyed this but I feel like the movie did a lot better and conveying the more emotional moments and fleshing out the characters.
