Well guys, here we are! What an absolute whirlwind of a journey this has been so far.
So much has happened in the last couple of life-changing years and I'm so excited to share it with you all: my Hinchers. You have been right by my side for every step of the way and I honestly couldn't have done it without the amazing love and support from this incredible family we?ve built together.
It's often felt like a fairy tale but it hasn't always been easy, and I'm going to let you in on the highs and the lows as well as my biggest fears and my darkest challenges. Because this book right here, is me.
This is me: Soph - the wife, the mother and the person behind Mrs Hinch.
So let's do this! Put your Hinch Lists to one side, get comfy and join me on the sofa with a cuppa. Welcome to my world.
Fuck me. I thought that one of the main reasons poeple find it difficult to spell and converse is because they either dropped out of school or didn't pay attention. Now I wonder how far books like this have influenced people and can be said to be the reason they don't know correct spelling, punctuation or grammar. There were many examples, but to give one: "me and her went", should be "she and I went". For fuck's sake. Why is an editor not picking up on these things? Have you no degree in English?! How do these people land a job, not do the job, and continue to hold the job?
As we all know, and as someone else has pointed out, this isn't going to win the Booker (though it is true that trash can and has won the Booker). It's the non-fiction equivalent of one of those books you pick up at the airport to kill some time. It's a book about a very normal person who has been lucky to ride an Instagram wave of popularity. There's nothing wrong with that. To say that the book has been published because the publishers knew they would profit greatly from its sales is saying nothing we need to hear. Publishers will publish the text they think will make the most sales, in all cases. Unfortunately for us, what this means is that when someone like H, or Louise Pentland, for example, gains incredible popularity and one of their team considers writing a book, that product lands on bestseller lists. This is not because of any merit contained within the text itself per se, but because publishers bank on what they predict will sell. It's just the way the system's set up.
As a postgrad student of English, I have a contempt for books like these that see people with no talent making huge sales while people who have amazing potential struggle to get published and find enough money to eat. I think this will always sadden me.
This has not become a review of this specific book at this point, really. I could be talking about any other 'influencer' who has written a book, or ghost written a book *coughZoellacough*.
Let's be honest - this is never going to win the booker. It is what it says on the tin, a cosy, grab a cuppa bedtime read with Mrs Hinch. It's not just her Instagram in book form, it killed an afternoon and I enjoyed it. Easy 4 stars
I’m really sad to have to rate this so low. I know that this wouldn’t have been her intention - but this book was SO negative. The repetition of her going on about now liking expensive things or overseas holidays, made it feel like she was judging people who did. I also don’t feel like I really learned anything new about her from this book.
I still love Mrs Hinch - I just wish her editing team supported her better to make this more enjoyable to read.
If you've spent time in certain corners of the internet, you'll know about the phenomenon of Hinching. Hinching means cleaning. Fans of Hinching love the thrill of scrubbing their homes clean of any lingering dust and dirt.
It really makes me question humanity sometimes when I see just how vile some people can be towards others, just because they're jealous of their success. In this book Sophie talks about the constant trolling & abuse she receives. She's open, honest, down to earth & I don't understand why people feel the need to do this?
So please NO negativity on this post! 🙏
I've followed the Hinching journey from the beginning & have all of her other books, so for me this was an interesting, enjoyable read. I found myself totally relating to her mental health struggles & her weight. A fabulous insight into the real person behind the Instagram posts.
I couldn’t even finish this. I really tried to push through but just couldn’t do it. I got the audiobook as something cosy to listen to in the bath or while tidying up - something to have on in the background - as I quite like Mrs Hinch’s Instagram stories. I honestly feel like I’ve been robbed of £12. Every chapter is a rehash of a lot of the content in the chapter before and she just seems to complain about every single aspect of her life, despite being incredibly privileged. When she was talking about ‘trolls’ putting her down (every other sentence it feels like), which is an awful experience that no one should have to go through of course, it felt like she was having a go at me personally through the audiobook despite me never having trolled her - and this was over and over again. Her writing about her weight loss also felt incredibly tone deaf and offensive. I got to the point where she is talking about how her opinions on the brands she works with are entirely her own for about the 6th time and it just feels like I’m willingly listening to some sort of advert. She reads the book very well, it’s just a shame the content is like an unedited teenager’s diary. 1/5 - did not finish.
Very much enjoyed this book. I’ve followed Mrs Hinch for a while online and love watching her satisfying cleaning stories but I found this book did show me that there’s more than just that side of Mrs Hinch, and I found it really interesting to read about the struggles she’s gone through that lots of us go through. I also really appreciated her honesty with some of the things she wrote about. Quite a nice easy read too.
I wanted to read something a little more lighthearted for book fourteen, and this did not disappoint. I’ve unashamedly followed ‘Mrs Hinch’ on Instagram for years, keeping up to date with hacks and cleaning ideas. Yet this book opened the doors to her own life, and what it is she has gone through - and I really, truly understood and related to so much.
Such a lovely, down to earth read - although I’m now eager to do some more hinching!
I’ve always enjoyed watching Mrs Hinch journey from the start. But this book has not only changed some views, it’s made me cry and it’s simply beautiful.
Sophie opens up about her childhood, how she met Jamie, her health, trolls and becoming a mummy and so much more. I just want to give her the biggest hug and take her pain away. You can tell she’s such a great Mum to little Ronnie and even though I’ve always said it’s mad how someone makes so much money doing what we all do - clean our homes - I actually have loved watching her these past few years and watching her journey. This book is a real eye opener. It’s definitely one I’m going to recommend because whether you love her or aren’t too sure about her I’m sure this book will make you see things in a different light. She’s a normal person just like the rest of us. She didn’t ask to fall into the fame game and it’s not all glitz and glam.
Such an easy read, which was really enjoyable. Mrs Hinch was so open and honest about everything social media related & her personal life. I love her so maybe I’m a bit biased but would recommend to anyone wanting to know a little bit more about Sophie or the life of “influencers”.
I genuinely thought this might be interesting. When she said the thought of her husband going back to work made her anxious, so he didn't, just made me annoyed. It's still a privileged person describing ordinary things and saying how difficult they are.
I have no shame in admitting I loved this book. What's not to love about a woman who loves to clean, loves her family and shares it with the world. Haters go hate, im full of Mrs Hinch love
An easy read to break up my TBR pile. Bit repetitive in some parts and from the middle onwards I already knew quite a lot of what was written from Instagram so wasn’t anything new I’m afraid!
I don’t always bother to write a review. Too busy, indifferent etc but I always give stars.
I read other reviews only when I’ve finished the book and never before. I wasn’t going to write a review as I couldn’t really think what I could write that would be helpful considering what sort of book it is. You will either read it because you’re interested in Mrs Hinch or you won’t.
However on reading other reviews I felt compelled to add my own. I can’t believe some of the comments and I’m not entirely sure they are warranted, give true reflection on the book and are possibly written by the disgusting trolls that Mrs Hinch has written about in some detail!
Is it necessary to point out this book isn’t going to win any prizes? Is it necessary to point out grammar? I would not say this about most books. This book however is written as Sophie speaks. I am one of her ‘followers’ on Instagram, one of the first accounts I ever followed actually. I like her & I’m interested in her story. I can imagine her voice as if she were speaking it aloud. Some wording that isn’t grammatically correct is literally her Essex dialect. If the editor had changed it then it wouldn’t have been her authentic wording and she is very clear about keeping everything authentic and transparent.
Why write a review and lump all ‘influencers’ in with it?
Let’s be honest, if you didn’t know or hadn’t heard of Mrs H you probably wouldn’t read it. Is not a case of publishers packaging up the same story in a different cover to make money & jumping on the bandwagon. To say that people have no talent and almost aren’t worthy of writing a book to tell their story makes me angry.
We are all worthy. We all have a story to tell. Not everyone will want to read or story though! It’s just like a nasty comment on social media. If you don’t like someone, aren’t interested in their content, scroll on by! Don’t bother to read their book…..
I found this book easy and pleasant to read. I’ve already said I like Sophie and have followed for a while so I am genuinely invested in her story and the background leading up to her Insta taking off! What it also did was open my eyes to just what social media can be- the good and the more negative. It’s a crazy world.
I finished the book and I felt happy. It’s nicely written, friendly, informative and I felt as if I had quite a bit in common! There’s nothing offensive in it.
If you follow Mrs H then I think you will enjoy it as much as me. If you haven’t even heard of her then maybe it’s not for you.
A very honest and emotional read about someone who I have began to feel like I know and converse with on a daily, weekly basis 🤣 You dont need to be a Nobel peace prize winner to change the world, you can change one person's world by simply providing them with an avenue for anxiety and companionship.
My Hinch odyssey continues. I could (should?) fill endless hours of therapy analysing why consuming all things Mrs Hinch has become my lifeblood. Anyway this hit the spot and I live to fight another day.
A different read to my normal reading! This book is about someone who taught me to enjoy cleaning and looking after my home and I’m grateful for that. Sophie has a lot of good things to say and it was interesting to know a bit more about her and her story!
A massive congratulations to Mrs Hinch for this fantastic memoir!! Was delivered today and I read it in one sitting!!
I laughed and I cried. I feel I now know Soph like an old friend and although I’ve been following her since before she wrote Hinch Yourself Happy, you can just tell that this has taken a hell a lot of inner strength to write.
To allow us readers into her life on a much more personal level than just what she posts on her account, has undoubtedly taken incredible courage. (Even more so after reading about the evil trolling and abuse she suffers!) This book is her laying herself bare for all. Yet throughout it all still promoting positivity and sincere gratitude to her followers.
With chapters like Anxiety, Motherhood, and Body Talk, I think this book will reach out to many more than just those who love to clean their homes. There is so much more to Sophie Hinchliffe than fluffy dusters and Zoflora!!
How many other successful influencers can say they still do their family shop in Morrison’s, buy their baby’s clothes from Tesco, and many of their own clothes come from High Street stores? Mrs Hinch is so relatable to many and this new book simply proves why.
Even if you are not a ‘Hincher’ I definitely recommend this! With an incredible insight into the real world of an influencer, everyone with an Instagram account needs to read this, and pay close attention to chapter 7!!
Love Mrs hinch, think shes beautiful inside and out. I brought this book for an easy /quick read (whilst waiting for my first born to make an apperance). It certainly is an easy read, however i do agree with other comments that her life before isnt much different to most peoples. I found it quite repetitive and negative.. everything had a negative by it, no matter what positive thing happened there was always something bad. I think i expected a more uplifting book. Overall i would say avarage.
OK so I have a confession. I’m a proud “Hincher” I have been a member of this family since way before everyone and their Nan followed Soph on Insta. I have seen the madness of her viral Instagram account almost since day one. I never bothered with any of her books before (Sorry Soph) because I saw them more as being notepads but when I saw she had written a memoir I knew this was the book for me. It was preordered immediately - I usually read books on my kindle but wanted the hard copy to see the photos. I waited until 4.30pm yesterday when Amazon (finally!) delivered me the book and I finished it this morning! Just when I thought I couldn’t love Hinchy anymore she pulls this! I cried! I laughed and now I’ve finished the book I’m so happy for her. I am not the type of Hincher that buys everything she uses and I started watching her insta for cleaning tips (I am a bit OCD) but as her account, and family has grown I have found myself skipping the cleaning stories and watching her and her family - not in a voyeuristic way but the happy for her way. Ronnie is gorgeous and always makes me smile, I adore Henry and Sophie and Jamie make me laugh - I have the same issue with my husband leaving things all over the house. Sophie throwing his flip flops on the front garden is something I can relate to. That’s the thing about her - so many people can relate to her! I know she has trolls and the bit in the book about them giving her anxiety upsets me. Why can’t people be nice?! I will tell you why....it’s jealousy! They are jealous that someone as beautiful and down to earth as her is a huge success. If she ever reads this review I want her to know Jamie is right. She is beautiful inside and out. Ignore the trolls. Keep doing what you’re doing and I wish her all the love and success for the future - wherever that may take her and her beautiful family. X
This isn’t going to win any awards, but it was an interesting read, I definitely left it having learned more about Mrs Hinch than I did prior to reading this.
A lot of these books written by influencers and YouTubers are notoriously written by ghostwriters but I have to give credit to Mrs Hinch because as far as I can tell, these are her words. It’s written in a very informal, conversational, chatty manner, exactly the way she speaks in her stories which is great.
Where this fell down for me was in the amount of negative repetition there was. She talks at length about the downsides of fame and social media, and although she says she’s grateful for the opportunities she’s been given, it still comes across as a little bit blind to the positives.
Also, she comes across a little bit “holier than thou” in several passages where she explains she isn’t into any big clothing labels and still shops at Primark, or doesn’t want to move abroad, or she’d rather a domestic holiday to an overseas one. This is all fine, but it’s droned on about, at least every few pages to the point I think she thinks it’s a personality trait. It’s fine if you’re not into a lavish lifestyle, but this was written in a way that nearly suggests she looks down on those who do.
Overall, it was OK. Enjoyed skimming this while having a cup of tea in the evenings and I feel like I have a better understanding of Mrs Hinch, and where this brand is headed. But, absolutely not a book to write home about.
Ok, I think this is one of the quicker books I have read this year. I’m not normally one for memoirs and really wasn’t sure how I felt about reading one but after seeing the book in Tesco and being an avid Hincher, I knew I had to buy it and I’m so glad I did.
Sophie explained her experiences of life and it really knocked me how much we had in common. I have personally experienced similar experiences in life and reading them made me cry. The bullies, the self confidence it all hit home and whilst it’s hard to read someone go through that, it’s nice to know you’re not alone in the world, a fact you don’t realise when you hit high school!!
I really enjoyed reading this and getting to know Sophie and her family more. Sophie, I doubt you’ll ever read this review but if you do thank you for sharing so much. Jamie is 100% right, you are so loved and thank you for being there for people like me. The trolls deserve no airtime at all and honestly makes me sick to my stomach that people can be that cruel, but you have changed so much for the better through cleaning and appreciating life so thank you!
I like mrs hinch & watch her stories sometimes and was interested to read this. As much as it tells us little snippets of the drama she has went through with trolls etc which is shocking but her life story really isn't any different to anyone elses life. She has had the same ups and downs as most of us & didnt find anything in the book that made her stand out as a "celeb". I think she has done incredibly well for herself & her family though a book about her life is maybe just a bit too far. We see enough of her life on insta and just thought this book was over the top. If I hadn't of read this I dont think I would have missed out on anything important.
A lovely, quick read. I’ve followed Mrs Hinch for a while now, from around the 1M follower mark. Great to read a little more about her and see that, despite the ‘perfect’ appearance, she struggles just as much as us.
