Our Valiant One and the Dark Lord are in mutual lovey-dovey mode! Or so they thought. Now their greatest challenge has arrived!
Nanase became a nurse to chase after Dr. Kairi Tendo. Now the two are finally starting to act like lovers. They’re busy enjoying blissful days until Kairi’s older sister Ryuko goes missing!
Maki Enjōji is a Japanese manga artist. Among her works, Happy Marriage!? is one of the best known and it has been published in English under VIZ Media’s Shojo Beat, in French by Kazé, in German by Tokyopop and in Italian by Star Comics.
Despite giving this a neutral rating, I am still not sure if I truly like it. Nanase encompasses everything I hate in annoying female characters. Tendo is every female lead's worst nightmare as a boyfriend. Honestly, it's just the fact that gives old-school Jam rom-com vibes that makes me give this rating. It's nostalgia alone.
I loved the direction this volume went and how the story’s going! Really excited for the final volume once I get my hands on it! That end chapter was so funny
The penultimate volume fritters away any of the more interesting options for the previous cliffhanger to keep the book on track with its silly, sub-par, soap opera shenanigans. It's not bad so much as it is very, very weak. But this nurse is going to stand by her doctor to the end it seems, and I have that book on hand to read next, so here we go . . .
This is the volume before the last and Tendo still doesn't know how to communicate? I really don't understand what Sakura sees in him most of the time. She puts in all the work and he just skates by. His attitude was cute in the beginning, but now it's annoying me. However, good for Sakura for finding something outside of her relationship with Tendo to aspire to.
This is my review of the 'An Incurable Case of Love' series (and yes it is a bit premature writing a review when there's still one volume left but we'll get to that later).
This manga is about a nurse called Nanase who feel in love with a Dr, called Dr Tendo, several years ago. Inspired by him she decided to become a nurse and pursue a relationship with him. The pair end up working at the same hospital, in the same department, and eventually end up together.
Although the manga is enjoyable, with aspects of very adorable romance and some budding friendships. I find the main characters irritating. Nanase is a girlboss, she's loving and driven, she cares about her work and her patients but I feel as if her entire character is revolved around the Dr she falls in love with, even going as far as to put his needs above her own in every manner of the sense. He refuses to confide in her, under the guise of protecting her, in some instances he can treat her and others really horribly, and even when they do get together nothing about their relationship dynamic changes. She still chases him and he's still cold and unfeeling.
I will admit she does stick up for herself sometimes, and sometimes Dr Tendo can be very kind and sweet towards her. But the fact that the Dr has all this trauma surrounding the death of his ex girlfriend, and instead of trying to move on he simply just pushes the main character away really gets on my nerves. And I do understand trauma can be difficult to deal with, emotions can be hard to understand and explain but the fact that the Dr goes through this repetitive cycle of being unfeeling and cold, to not confiding her and pushing her away. To accepting the main characters love and to an extent reciprocating it. This whole cycle really bugs me as no matter the situation it feels like your rereading the same plot over and over again.
However, this series still gets a 3.5 star rating from me. As the romance can be cute at times. I do enjoy the sunshine/ grumpy trope (maybe not this extent, but still). And some of the side characters are really amazing, like Dr Tendo's quirky, kind and extroverted sister. The gang of nurses supporting our 'valient one' in her pursuit of Dr Tendo. And Dr Kisugi, a kind doctor who has Nanase and Tendo's best interest at heart.
Read it if you like hospital romances, but rest assured there are better stories out there.

The bonus chapter was funny, they have been dragging the studying abroad thing for too long in my opinion, the twin sister thing was overreaching and unnecessary. The Nishi thing was funny though
We find our two main characters at a crossroads in their relationship where Nanase wants to know what her future with Dr. Tendo is going to look like and Tendo is happy the way things are and eventually reveals he doesn't want Nanase to feel like she has to take care of him. This subject doesn't feel like it really gets a resolution it's just Nanase saying what she wants and Tendo continually saying no instead of having an adult conversation about it. Then a person from Tendo's past appears prompting him to basically revert back to an even worse version of himself when he and Nanase first officially met. Once again not really talking about what the issue is like adults until something dramatic happens that prompts them to actually talk about what's bothering them thus resulting in their relationship essentially being put on pause while Tendo pursues his career goals abroad. I did appreciate while Nanase was originally considering following Tendo decides to better use their time apart to better herself and further her own career rather than permanently being at his side. I think if I were to really critically rate this volume it would be somewhere between a 3-3.5. It wasn't that it was bad necessarily. I just wasn't a fan of the pacing of how parts of it were paced. I think another factor was that I had read another manga where a similar storyline was told and I unconsciously was comparing the two as I was reading this volume. Still excited about the final volume and how the Mangaka is going to have this story end for our two main characters.
This volume started off good. There’s some more miscommunication but it was quickly resolved. Our couple share some sweet moments. However, they’re dragging this whole study abroad thing. He should have left and returned already. Also, the introduction of Nishi made no sense. Like, this story is so up and down nowadays with more down. The twin sister, unnecessary. Well, I’ll still keep reading. 2.5/5
Nanase is about to start her career as a nurse under Dr Tendo who happens to be the reason she became a nurse in the first place. Five years prior, the two met while trying to save a stranger after which Nanase fell in love with the doctor. Now, not only does Dr Tendo not remember her, but he is also remorselessly demanding and the reason for the nurse shortage in their department. Nanase however refuses to be bullied out and earns the title of The Valliant one for trying to stand up to the grouchy doctor.
While I don't like it quite as much as Happy Marriage?!, this combines all things I like about Enjouji Maki. Nanase and Dr Tendo are a bickering couple that is just super fun to read about. I wouldn't call a particularly deep story but it's just plain and simple fun. While An Incurable Case of Love does try to add a bit of seriousness by going into stories of loved ones lost through illness, I didn't feel like those elements added much to the story.
Although this is largely a RomCom, I actually really enjoyed the hospital setting and how it was handled. It felt like a lively area where we also got to know some of the main characters' colleagues - while they were never fleshed out, it did create a sense of reading about a workplace community. I thought the nickname Valliant One was endearing and it was fun to see how all the staff kept tabs on the developing relationship.
Nanase, or rather the Valliant One, was quite a nice lead character. I liked that she didn't immediately continue liking Dr Tendo just because of his looks but most importantly, I like that she comes to care for her work for her own sake and always strives to better herself. In a way, she did end up choosing her workplace over Dr Tendo. Even though she often doubts herself, I think she makes a strong character in many ways.
Dr Tendo is unapologetically grumpy - he's not a brooding hero with a sad past. He's just the way he is, he knows it and doesn't care what others think of him. Of course, he learns to be more friendly in his own way and Nanase helps him loosen up, but I like that there's no particular reason behind his moods or any story that's supposed to make us feel sorry for him.
I suppose a lack of depth is what keeps me from loving it, but there is otherwise nothing I can fault it with. It's a fun RomCom, an easy read with likeable characters and nice art. I'm definitely hoping this wasn't the last of Enjouji Maki!
nanase sakura likes being useful whether it’s caring for her patients or doing things for her boyfriend. she’s a nurse in the pulmonary department but she also happens to be dating the head of her department—the hottest doctor at her hospital.
kairi tendo is love with one of the nurses at his hospital. he’s researching a cure for specific disease which may temporarily take him all the way to los angeles.

SPOILERS
kairi’s older sister, ryuko is missing. his parents told her that they had planned an arranged marriage for her to a doctor. we find out later that she’s in the neighborhood but she decided to stay at her boyfriend’s place.
ryuko asked nanase to care for kairi in her absence. kairi doesn’t want her to help him with any household needs. he only wants her to be his girlfriend. he’s not dating her for her to be his maid. he expained to her that he’s more than capable of doing his own chores himself.
kairi’s last girlfriend, minori wakabayasi, passed away from an illness that has no cure. he’s dedicated his career as a doctor to find a cure for that specific illness even though she’s since passed on. her twin sister has started working at the hospital in the pulmonary department. they both having being doing research to try to find a cure.
nanase encourages kairi to fulfil his dream of studying abroad. he’s flys out to los angeles and accepts a position at a hospital there that starts in five months.
nanase is friends with another nurse, nishi, at her hospital. nishi gets angry when she turns down his offer to attend a seminar with him because she doesn’t feel comfortable traveling with a man that isn’t her boyfriend. nishi corners her in the hallway and asks her inappropriate questions about how her boyfriend makes her 💥. kairi rips his hands off of her and explains every dirty detail. i was shocked to find out that he wasn’t interested in nanase at all, but the one he actually wanted was kairi.
chikashi kamijo, the twenty-five year old billionaire is still interested in nanese. he has a circulatory disease so he periodically stops by the hospital.
4,5/5 “Her love infected me, wore me down and found a place to stay. It now lives within me” This volume was really funny and entertaining. We get to see Rayku flying away and leaving a note, and we see more of tendo’s family dynamics. His dad wants him to take over the hospital and his sister might have to marry a man that she doesn’t want. So Nana thinks that maybe Tendo can live with her for a while, however he refuses for a reason I don’t remember but it was kind of silly. There’s a new doctor in pulmonology and she happens to be Tendo’s ex girlfriend sister. She wants to know if he’s forgotten about her and what’s happening with his studies. Nana feels bad because she knows how much Tendo wanted to study abroad and she feels like a burden. In the end, she encourages him to go to America. She thinks she can make him fall in love with her again but she’s still scared. There’s an incident with another nurse that tries to get close with Nana but in the end, she finds out that he was into Tendo and it was lowkey funny. Also nana is still insecure about her feminine appeal and she wants to work on it. Something that I love about this volume is how Nana puts herself and what she wants first. She wanted to follow Tendo to America but in the end she realizes she doesn’t want to. She loves her work, her patients and her colleagues and she wants to put that first. I think nana used to live for Tendo and it’s nice to see her doing things for herself. And Tendo was really supportive and he promised her that he would return to Japan. I don’t know what will happen in the next volume since he’s supposed to leave in 5 months for America but It’ll be fun to read about it. Overall a great and cute story
Today's manga post is on An Incurable Case of Love, Vol. 6 by Maki Enjōji. It is 200 pages long and is published by Shojo Beat. The cover has the two main characters on it, Nanase and Kairi. As it is the sixth in the series, you need to have read the first five volumes to understand the story. There is no foul language, mild sexuality, and no violence in this manga. The story is told from third person close of the main character, Nanase. There Be Spoilers Ahead. From the back of the manga- Nanase became a nurse to chase after Dr. Kairi Tendo. Now the two are finally starting to act like lovers. They’re busy enjoying blissful days until Kairi’s older sister Ryuko goes missing!
Review- This volume is really about Kairi dealing with his past and how it could affect his future. Nanase has some good moments in this volume with her insight into what Kairi really wants to do and she supports him in making a big decision. I like how much both characters have grown over the course of the series. Nanase is much more comfortable with herself and expressing what she wants. Kairi is more honest with himself and his fears. I look forward to the next volume and seeing how this series will wrap up.
I give this volume a Five out of Five stars. I get nothing for my review and I bought this manga with my own money.
I am thinking a 3.5 for this one and the reason why is that I am frustrated. Frustrated that Dr. Tendo cannot tell Nana that she is beautiful just once. I feel like the second I start to really like him, he says something....unlikable.
I was surprised by the turn in events with Nishi's character. What mostly gets me about it is why he also joined that bandwagon of thinking that Nana is not pretty enough for Dr. Tendo? I felt that was unnecessary.
But at the same time I get being told that you are not good looking enough to be with someone. I just wish Dr. Tendo supported her in a way that felt more...loving? Though he is an asshole and is not good with feelings so I guess it is in his character.
I did enjoy the bonus story though. It was funny.
I want to say that this is my least favorite volume but I am hesitant to say that because I do not think it is - but I am frustrated and annoyed at the fact that they have been together for a while now and he cannot reassure her just once that she is beautiful. He does say cute but it just feels that even he thinks that she is not on his level...and that is shitty.

3.5 ⭐ First, I hate how he went to her house after the sister showed up and told him about the research. It sucks that he used Nanase to almost forget but I mean she wanted to be there and help him. I wish Tendo was more open with her. He called their love a virus. NGL kinda cheesy but cute considering their occupation lol. I love the growth of the characters especially Nanase. She seems to have really stepped away from her dependencies to Dr. Tendo. Even with Tendo struggling on his decision, she told him to go because it was the right thing to do. I need Tendo to be more affectionate towards Nanase especially in public. She still struggles with appearances. Also, did not expect that from Nishi. But that part was hilarious.
Every volume seems to consist of Nanase thinking she's not good enough for Dr. Tendo/he doesn't feel the same way about her with an added bonus of someone making a comment about how she's not that pretty. (Which I don't understand where this is coming from.) It's the same plot and even if Nanase's fears are quelled, it's just going to happen again in the next volume.
I just wanted a cheesy will-they-won't-they medical drama romance, but instead it's just Nanase's insecurities. I think this series would have been better as a slow burn. These two got together way too quick with seemingly no romantic build up on his end, so the mangaka just has to keep recycling the same plot. Which is Nanase doubts their love for xyz reasons. I weep for what could have been.

Review: About the drawings, we clearly notice at first sight the style of Maki Enjōji, which I really love. One of the biggest flaws of the plot is that we don’t really understand the timeline. I feel like the story happens in a two-year span. On a good side: as we go along, the readers witness a relationship between adults who experience joy, doubts, etc. But I still feel disappointed: the last 2 volumes are full of fillers. And it’s too bad, because I really loved the first 5 volumes. In other words, it’s like the last couple volumes were kind of a bonus story but we were still “forced” to read them to know the ending. Otherwise I have nothing bad to say about the plot.
This is not as bad as Volume 4, but not better than Volume 5. I cannot stand Sakura, and even Tendō now! (I’m not calling him by his damn title. That’s how irked I am at him!) He has been getting on my nerves the last couple of volumes, and not in the good kind of way.
The only reasons I am going to fight through the last volume are that it’s just one to go, since a manga is quick to get through, and Tendō looks like Zayne from the mobile game Love & Deepspace, who is also a doctor! (Zayne is better, BTW!)
After enjoying the previous volume in this series, but not feeling an urge to continue it, I was sure when I picked up this volume to read that I'd have a similar reaction. My expectations were subverted. It's difficult to figure out the reason why I found this volume more entertaining and enjoyable, but it was.
I will say that while the last chapter did get a laugh out of me, the lead up to the punch line was a little sketch. Overall, I still had a good time.

I loved the direction this volume went and how the story’s going! Really excited for the final volume once I get my hands on it! That end chapter was so funny
