Galactic Order #5

The New King: An Alien War Romance

Mona

It’s been a long time since I felt safe. Too long. You would think after all I’ve been through at the hands of an alien monster it would be difficult for me to live near them.

That it would be difficult to live under their roof. To sleep near them. To eat their food. To talk to them. The Dahk may not be the Juldo, but they are still alien to me. They are frightening and different from me. They look, talk, and move differently than me. They are monsters in their own way. But I’ve lived through horrors, both outside of my world and inside it.
For the first time in my life, I’m starting to feel safe. I’m living amongst an alien race on a frozen world, lightyears away from my old home. But I can breathe without wanting to hold it in. I can open my eyes without wanting to claw them out. I can live without terror clawing at my heels. And that is because of the Dahk.

Their king is arrogant and infuriating, and I can’t stand him. But he would never raise a hand to me. He would never lock me away in a cage.

We may not be able to speak to each other without shouting. Or look at each other without a glare. But he is safety and comfort and it’s not long before I need him. It’s not long before I’m running to him faster than I ever ran from him. It not long before he is my world, and I am his.

It’s not long at all.

The further into the series I get the more of it I crave. Sadly, that is starting to be for the wrong reasons, seeing as I feel like the story didn’t give as much as the previous books, leaving me a bit unsatisfied with it. That’s not to say it wasn’t a good read. I really liked The New King and the romance even more so. However I didn’t fall in love with it.

It felt so rushed. That was the problem for me. Sure, the books in this series are purposefully short and while I prefer longer stories I don’t mind them being shorter that much. The previous books have compensated for it well with so much complexity, twists and addictive drama that made them feel like full length novels anyway. No such luck with The New King though. Sure, there were some drama, some twists and disagreements there, but they were so minimal and rushed through that it didn’t really feel like they were there. A lot of intense and compelling scenes that could have set a good and impactful tone to the story were recapped instead of written out and that just removed the struggle and impact all together. It made it feel like the story jumped from struggle to conclusion immediately and let’s be honest. That just removes all the passion and excitement from the story.

This made the romance both the strongest and the weakest aspect to the story. For one, because of the recapping and rushed storytelling it gave the book very little else to do in terms of plot except developing the romance. While I for the most part enjoyed the romance between Mona and Uthyf that sadly also suffered because of the recaps and rushness. It had a very thrilling beginning with them bickering for a second (which we only knew they did a lot through recap) and then suddenly in agreement and liking each other the next second. Then they got bonded and then suddenly it was weeks later and they were completely at ease with their mating. This sucked a lot of investment from me. Sure, I still liked them together and all the sweet moments between them, but I also missed out on so much that I never felt like I got to know them separately and together. For a character that had been through torture (and a word Amazon won’t let me write out) and for a King under constant pressure of a civil war, procuring an heir and following the culture of several mates, none of them were shown really struggling through any of this. With such deep characters there were a lot of expectations for these conflicts and twists to take place, if only it been given any room for it.

Despite all this I will still give The New King four stars. All books can’t be winners and although it might not seem like it I did like the book a lot with the darker character, the romance (when it was given room for development), Alyn’s part in the story and of course seeing the previous main characters. I weren’t given the chance to love this book, but it did build up the excitement and expectation well enough to fall for the next book in the series.

This book… THIS BOOK. 😭🔥 I don’t know how Erin Raegan keeps raising the bar, but The New King had me hooked, hurting, and hopelessly in love from start to finish.

Mona’s trauma and her fight to finally feel safe broke me. She’s been through so much darkness, yet her resilience shines. And then there’s the Dahk king—arrogant, infuriating, impossible… but also the one who gives her the first real sense of safety she’s had in forever. The way they go from shouting and glaring 😤👀 to undeniable need and devotion had me flipping pages like a madwoman.

Enemies-to-lovers energy? Check.
Slow-burn but worth EVERY second? Check.
Alien king who’s all growly danger but secretly her home? Double check.

The romance is messy, intense, and healing all at once. Mona’s fear, his persistence, the moment safety transforms into love—it was raw, emotional, and HOT. 🥵 By the end, I was convinced their bond was forged in fire and could never be broken.

If you’re craving an alien war romance with deep scars, fierce love, and enough tension to make your chest ache, The New King will own you. 👑💜

Another amazing installment of the wonderful Galactic Order series. In this book we meet Mona, a human female survivor of physical, emotional, and mental abuse. She was a captive of the evil Juldo Master tortured and beaten. She was rescued along with other human females and decides to stay on Home World under the protection of the Dahk in the royal palace. At first she hesitates in getting to know the Dhak and steers clear of them. As she gets to know more about the Dhak and specifically the young king Uthyf, she starts to see Home World as more than just a refuge. Though she and Uthyf are constantly at odds with each other, what she doesn't know is that Uthyf has a good reason for keeping cold and distant. As a young king in tumultuous time for his planet, Uthyf feels he must mate a Dhak female and give the planet a Dhak queen. Tensions against the strange humans are high and he doesn't need to add to the turmoil by mating a human. They fight the attraction they feel for each other, but eventually the inevitable happens and they become mated. Old enemies return with new alliances, and traitors are revealed, making this an exciting story that you will not put down. You will find yourself rooting for the troubled couple and hate all that is Juldo!

Great read! I zipped right through this addition to the Galactic Order series. What made this book such a page turner is the fabulous heroine and her wonderful character development and story. All the Pythes (mates to Dahk aliens) in this series have been unique and strong but Mona tops them. I also always appreciate and find interesting culinary elements thrown into plots, stories and books.
Possible Spoiler:
I would like to thank Ms Raegan for the additional chapter following The End (For Now). I kept waiting for the description of what had happened when Mona first came to Home World, as what happened that night was often referred to. Also, it was very apparent from the onset that Uthyf knew she was to be his, just as Mantu said.

Great step forward

Mona is the Queen he didn’t know he needed. I think she will help both humans and dahk alike see they need each other. That not all will be against having a second wife or two husbands. I think it will be interesting to see a human male and dank female come together.

Uthyf and Mona

I really liked this installment of the series. Uthyf is the king of Home World and Mona is his reluctant human queen. There are several obstacles they have to conquer before they get their version of a HEA. Great story!

I really liked the story and thought the author handled her traumas with a lot of grace, while also allowing the story to move forward. The only thing that really bugged me was the story we werent told until the VERY VERY end, even though it was alluded to a ton. I had lost this series in my TBR pile and so I kept thinking I must have missed this in another book or forgotten it but I don't think that is the case now since it was added at the end of this book. I think it would have served the story better placed at the very beginning. Its not like there were any big revelations in it. With that left out until the end but CONSTANTLY referred to, it leaves you with this feeling that you missed something but not in a good way at all. Its like a conversation you know you must have had because everyone is talking so freely about it around you without offering a full retelling. AGAIN, it did not add any big revelations at the end because it was all spelled out very quickly in the story BUT I think having it at the beginning would have benefitted the reader a ton. I felt like a lunatic.

Politics and assimilation

Mona and the Alien King. Having suffered abuse all her life Moana isn't one to trust very easily. But she does understand sacrifice she a, she also understands that she can't demand this whole new species to Cave to her way of thinking. Even though she very much wishes to have a new home there. She doesn't feel safe on Earth anymore and that crucial sense of safety that she has carved out for herself among the king's court is important to her well-being. What she doesn't understand or anticipate is just how much she means to the king and how far he will go and making her feel safe and protected. Not much action in this book there was some but ask the author noted it was more political Intrigue as well as issues of the human assimilation into the culture in this world. There are some character set a recurring from other books that have a major role and some of the twists and turns that this book takes. Editing was better still not 100% but better.

3.5☆ for a novella

Tw:

The first 20% of the book it was me thinking fuck you Vivian and also being grateful I started reading the wrong book so I hadn't read her story as I wanted.

Sadly because although Vyr sounded like an alien I would love that little betrayal of Vivian made me hate her.

I loved Mona she lived through so much and although it is a novella it made me feel everything so intese as I hadn't with all the last books I've read.

Since I didn't know the title of the book I had no idea who was going to be her mate.

Honestly not only I started reading a series starting in the 5th book but I didn't even read the title. Although technically I started the serie by the novella in the 7.5 book.

Don't be like me.

I liked a looot this novella would have loved it if it were longer.

I must say I didn't understand half of it because I never read series in order but still I liked it.

Mona and Uthyf

Three human women remain from the twenty that were stolen by the Shadow Born. Mona stays because her cruel father is still alive on Earth.

She fills her days working in the kitchen and hiding in her room. Then Uthyf, the King, has her brought in to tell the story of her kidnapping and torture while she was held on Juldoris. Her finally telling her story starts the events rolling in this book.

Mona is portrayed as “full of fire and courage” but her inner dialogue show she’s scared and haunted by all that has happened to her in her life. Uthyf feels the pull of Mona but knows he can’t marry a human. He needs a full blooded Dahk heir.

Some series questions are answered only to cause other questions. Mainly, what is The Assassin’s agenda?

A solid 3.5 stars.

some aspects of the relationship did feel a bit Insta love-y, and I didn't feel how quickly Mona seemingly got over her trauma was unrealistic. Maybe it was because by the time this book picks up, a lot of her suffering had been off page.

Admittedly, I didn't expect to be this invested in the world building. This series isn't just a trashy alien romance, contrary to the covers lol, and every book further develops the world. Every book since the first one has been so much more interesting than the first two books, especially as we see the humans further integrate into Dahk society.

My only other critique is that I wish these books were 100 pages longer! This length does feel like a novella at times, which is a shame.

The King and Mona.

Mona was taken as a pet and essentially tortured. She is trying to overcome her past torments while also trying to avoid the king at all costs. Of course, it wouldn't be a romance if two "people" weren't getting it on. Our two main characters go through some trials and tribulations as the king attempts to have his species accept more female humans into their population.

"You are fire. Now burn him with it."

While not quite as heart wrenching and adventurous as number 4, this one is just as good in it's own light. Fate happens. Even for a king, fate happens when you least expect it. As I said, this is not one mishap or adventure after another. It takes its time building you up to the big bang. I have read the entire series and each gets better and better.

The new King

Another feast of passion, bloodshed, romance, cake baking and bad guys. Mohna is another re-emerged character who is strong willed and has a horrendous past to overcome.
