This is the first novel of the Historical House series focusing on one special house -No 6, "Chelsea Walk" and the extraordinary young women who have lived there throughout history. "Mary Ann and Miss Mozart" is set in the colourful world of 18 century London.

12 year old Mary Ann, the youngest in her family, feels she's shadowed by her older sister Harriot's recent engagement and her older brother Geroge who gets the main focus just because he is the boy. She is sent to Miss Nerve's "Boarding House for Young Ladies" to "acquire ladylike accomplishments and to learn how to converse and behave in the society to make a good marriage."

Mary Ann however has some other plans: her greatest wish is to be an opera singer. She meets Jenny, a maid with an exceptional voice, they even get to see the Mozarts preform with his sister at the Ranleigh Gardens. Miss. Neaves school for young ladies, at first this seems a dream come true, singing, dancing, harpiscord...but soon her dreams are to be shattered forever when her father faces financial troubles, threatening the the engagement of Harriot, and a way to economize now is for Mary Ann to leave her school while her brother Geroge gets to continue his education. Mary Ann is willing to take any risk to earn 8 guineas to stay in the school...

One thing I noticed in reading the Historical House series is how these young girls have proto-feminist ideas. Each one is a rebel on her own level and has the ability to dream bigger, or shall I say they are all "little feminists." Commenting on the title of the novel, the history shows miss Nannerl Mozart was a brilliant musician who was gradually overshadowed by the genius of her male sibling. This is a relax read, and more suitable for girls between 10 to 13.

Mary Ann is a twelve-year-old girl living in a wealthy merchant family in London in 1764. She loves music and hopes to someday become an opera singer, but her parents do not think that is a respectable profession for a young woman. However, her parents do encourage her musical talents, as they believe an accomplished young lady is more likely to find a wealthy husband.

At the beginning of the story, Mary Ann is sent to a boarding school where she will be educated to become a proper young lady, and also receive singing and music lessons. Mary Ann loves the school and becomes good friends with the other students her age. She is even able to see the two Mozart siblings, famous child prodigies, perform. But then her father loses money from a risky investment and Mary Ann is told her parents will no longer be able to afford to pay for her schooling. Can Mary Ann find a way to stay at the school?

Mary Ann and Miss Mozart is a short and sweet story that should appeal to young girls who enjoy middle grade historical fiction. It’s a bit shorter than most middle grade books and I think the characters could have been more developed but it was a cute story with some interesting historical details. I also really liked that it mentioned Mozart’s sister since she was a very talented musician herself who did not receive the recognition she deserved during her lifetime.

I liked this book. It is a series of books about the same house at number 6 on Chelsea Walk and the six different girls who have lived there. This is the first one in the series. It is about a girl (Mary Ann) who wants to be an opera singer. She gets the chance to go to a boarding school that is in the number 6 Chelsea Walk house. The school goes to the Ranelagh Gardens in Chelsea and they get to hear Mozart and his sister perform. Mary Ann is inspired by Miss Mozart and is encouraged to continue her dreams. However, family problems arise and Mary Ann will have to leave the boarding school for good unless she can work to stop that from happening. I enjoyed this book, especially the suspenseful parts.

3.5 stars rounded down!
I love the concept of this series - following the same house through different time periods - but felt a few cautions merited rounding It down. The main character breaks a big rule of the school she attends at No 6 Chelsea walk and there is no real consequence for the character and the mother of the character slaps her for insolence. I understand that is historically correct but not sure it needed to be included for the age group this it targeted at.
That being said, with those cautions, I would recommend this as a fun way to see how times change & to start conversations about that between you and your reader!

I really like the premise of this series-following the house through various periods in history and seeing the stories of the girls who live there. However this book fell a bit flat for me. Despite the final sentences in the last chapter, it felt as though the overarching message was that Mary Ann must give up her dreams in order to fit in with societal norms and conform to her family’s position in society. It seems like Turnbull tried to fix this impression by adding the last few sentences in the last chapter but instead they had a different effect. It made the ending feel abrupt, leaving the reader with unanswered questions. This book gets 3 stars from me.

This is the first in the series of Usbornes 'Historical House' series. This series follows one house - 6 Chelsea Walk in London and the people that have lived there - It focus's on each young girl that lives there in each historical era.
The girls are plucky - with big ambitions!
I liked this book - it had me unable to put it down in places! and the internet links are great -you are able to listen to some music from the time to really get a feel fr the story.
Suitable for girls 9-13 I would say (altho I am a growed up and I liked it!!!)

It did not take long for me to become fully immersed in the life on Mary Ann at all and I could picture everything so clearly. Turnbull has a wonderful writing style that is easy to follow, while showing great characterisation and the building of setting.

I really wish I could have found out what Mary Ann went on to do after the storyline finished, but maybe this will come in one of the other books? It seems that the ticket falling into the panelling was a set up to be returned to.

It was cool, pretty simple historical book. Nothing special, but there was nothing bad to say about it too.

A story about a young girl who attends a boarding school near London, in 1764, and dreams of becoming an opera singer.
She attends a concert by Mozart and his older sister, when they were kids.
