Stop Living on Autopilot: Take Responsibility for Your Life and Rediscover a Bolder, Happier You

Rate this book
A raw and inspiring how-to guide that will help you recommit to your life, find your drive, and take action to stay bold, honest, and accountable for lasting happiness.

"If it's time to make a bold and courageous shift in your life, Stop Living on Autopilot is the guide you need."--Marie Forleo, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Everything Is Figureoutable

Take stock of your life: Based on your last 30 days of work (or marriage, or parenting), would your company rehire you? Would your partner immediately recommit to you? Would your children want you to continue to be their parent?

The easy answer is, "Absolutely!" But it's probably not the honest answer. Your life might read like a success story, and your parents and friends might even think you have it all figured out, but you have a secret: You've stopped caring about much of anything. You feel out of place in your own life. You'd rather binge-watch Netflix than think about what's next. You're living on autopilot. You have two choices: Experience a slow self-destruction, or commit to a course correction. The good news is, it's never too late to find your drive again.

Popular speaker and success coach Antonio Neves is here to offer hard-won lessons and remind you that you do have a say--that you can reboot your life and find fulfillment right where you are. You don't have to quit your job or move to Bali to follow your passion. You do, however, need to shift your perspective and commit to living courageously, replacing passivity with boldness.

Stop Living on Autopilot will guide you to confront hard truths about where you are and how you got there, inviting compassion, honesty, and accountability. There's no better time than now to reevaluate your life and lay a stronger foundationfor your next 30 days. Step by step, you can become an active player in your own life and rediscover what makes you great.

Antonio Neves has a genius approach for helping you stop, take stock, and decide what you want in life. It's genius due to its simplicity and focus. While other books and programs will have you take a deep dive into your life, he asks you to think about the last 30 days and ask things like "Based on the last 30 days, would your spouse choose to marry you again? Would your boss choose to hire you again?" That shorter time frame approach is both revealing and easier to take action on.

Interestingly, he does a monthly self review which sounds very similar to a monthly marriage review which Kat Cole, former COO and President of Focus Brands (think Cinnabon and others) does with her husband (she shared this in The Knowledge Project podcast). Neves asks himself each month:

* What's working in my life?
* What's not working in my life?
* What do I need to stop doing?
* What do I need to start doing?
* What's important about the next 30 days?

A couple of quotes that really resonated with me:

In my experience, life is like a Hollywood casting department. It has a funny, not-so-funny way of casting certain things, people, and experiences into your life. These things, people, and experiences (particularly the challenging or bad ones) keep showing up over and over again until we learn what we most need to learn from them and are finally willing to make different choices.

Totally agree. Sometimes the universe sees you need multiple tries to understand something. Painful though it is.

A therapist once told me, "Your children will be your teachers."

Absolutely. Some hard and many joyful lessons with them.

Neves also shares a lot of great quotes from others. One of my new favorites:

We must all either wear out or rust out, every one of us. My choice is to wear out. (Theodore Roosevelt)

Engaging book with some solid and inspiring ideas written by someone who's very relatable thanks to how comfortable he is sharing his own mistakes.

It took me awhile to get through this, but I did find some parts thought-provoking. I liked the 5 why’s to get to the root of your desire for something.

Antonio ‘Tony’ Neves has possibly written the least annoying self-help book I have read in a long time. He is sincerely positive and really wants to help by sharing what he has learned by his experiences and more. He speaks to you in ‘plain talk’ with just a few ‘self-help’ catch phrases we have all heard before. He levels with you, no ‘B.S.,’ because he’s been there before too. He knows exactly what you’re going to say and what your excuses will be. The honesty is so refreshing!

Yes, he is a ‘Success Coach,’ and he has a Podcast: “The Best Thing” but he lives it and means it. Believe me, I am one of the most cynical people on the planet when it comes to this topic, and he’s sold me! I have zero to gain from giving this book a good review except the opportunity of having read it before its final publication, and finally getting motivated to get off my coach during this Global Pandemic!

Tony leads you through his book by simply ‘getting started’ and takes you through various steps with short ‘quizzes’ of five questions you ask yourself, there are no right or wrong answers; sometimes you compare what you’re doing in your life now, to say five or ten years ago. OR, when you thought you were the happiest, or most successful, or whatever your parameters might be. Trust me, he does it better than I’m trying to explain it.

One of the final things he leaves you with is: ‘TOP 5 Things To Do (in some shape or form) on A Daily Basis.

Learn: Listen to a Podcast, Audiobook; read a book, take an online class, once a month.
Sweat: Move, at least 5-10 minutes a day.
Eat: Track what you eat for just a week, to see if you’re eating as well as you think you are.
Meditate: He was a skeptic; I was a skeptic. Research has overwhelmingly proven even 5-10 minutes of quiet time can decrease anxiety and stress.
Connect: Human interaction is key to life, preferably in person, when we can, or at least a phone call so we can hear each other’s voices.
Journal: Write a thought or two on the day or fill the page if you choose. ‘A brain dump is detox for the mind.’

Note: The comments on the Top Five things are my paraphrasing from Tony’s words.

Wherever you are in your life, I really believe this book is worth reading. We all need a push or gentle nudge occasionally so let this sincere, positive person help you too.

Thank you to Netgalley, Rodale Books and Penguin Random House, and Antonio Neves

I expected the typical self-help book. This was much better. It was written in a way that felt like one friend being vulnerable and encouraging you to do the same with yourself so that you could grow. Compelling read. Actionable advice.

Not going to lie- I was expecting "another self-help book" telling me to do more and be more. This book took me for a spin I wasn't expecting!

Antonio is honest, real and raw about his path in a way that makes you want to go deep into yours. This book gently pushed me out of my funk and opened my eyes to my future ahead. I highly recommend it!

Review originally published at https://libgirlbooks.com/2021/04/30/s...

It has been ages since I’ve read anything besides fiction and maybe the occasional memoir or biography. I can’t remember the last time I read a self help book besides this one. So when I saw that “A Productivity Book” held the number 1 spot on my 52 book reading challenge I did a bit of internal grumbling. Don’t I feel silly now, because not only did I enjoy this book very much, but I needed this book. Let’s just start with the opening lines:

“How the hell did I end up here?

This is the question you might ask yourself when you look in a mirror and attempt to evaluate where you are (or aren’t) in life.”
-Antonio Neves, “Stop Living on Autopilot”

Wow, do I feel simultaneously impressed while also feeling personally attacked (only mildly). This first page made me feel uncomfortable, because, yes, he was speaking to me. Directly to me. Because I’ve had these very thoughts. How many of us haven’t had those feelings at some point in our lives? Neves poses these uncomfortable questions for a reason, and he doesn’t hold back throughout the rest of the book. It’s a series of uncomfortable questions and statements that leave us feeling a bit vulnerable and questioning just about everything. However, what Neves does that’s important is he gives us the tools for grappling with the answers to these questions.

To be honest, while I read this book, I had my post draft open so I could make note of notable quotes I might want to use. I wound up with 15 of them. 15!!! No, I’m not going to throw 15 quotes at you in this review. The point is, that’s how many statements I deemed poignant and important enough to share with potential readers who might pick up his book. And really, if you at all feel a little stuck in your existence or, perhaps, wake up dreading the day or maybe even just some little facet of your day, this book is something you should read. For my part, I’m tired. Tired of wishing I had made one decision over another. Tired of feeling like I don’t really live up to my potential. And tired of blaming other people for things I didn’t reach for and didn’t achieve in life. And I’m tired of not being present for the things that are truly important.

While I can’t relate to every aspect of Neves’ story, there’s a lot I can. For instance, I’m not internet famous. I’m probably not viewed as even remotely successful by any stretch of the imagination, but I still grapple with fears and inadequacies and regrets. I tend to look nostalgically toward the past as the best time in my life to which I surely will never return, and that’s not fair. That’s not fair to me, and it’s not fair to my family who deserves the best of me every day. The best advice I got from Neves in this book is to live every day as if the best thing to happen to me hasn’t happened yet.

“I believe that the best thing to ever happen to you is ahead of you – not behind you. The secret: when you start to believe this, everything begins to change.”
-Antonio Neves

Neves’ approach is all about adjusting your attitude so that you are your own advocate, that you invest in your own future and believe in yourself in a meaningful way. But he doesn’t just encourage these things with memorable quotes. The book is full of written exercises that he encourages you to actually do so that you can gather your own thoughts in a journal form that you can look back on. These all encourage digging deep and really getting to inner truths you maybe have been ignoring for some time. If you don’t hold yourself accountable, who will? But it’s also pinpointing what you actually want for yourself and encouraging you to prioritize that and recommit yourself every day to that intended purpose.

This is a short book. It’s only 236 easily digestible pages. It’s simply put, but it packs a lot in. Neves doesn’t waste any time waxing poetic. He gets straight to the point with useful but poignant advice. Many of his stories are also quite humorous or touching, and that helps make his book more relatable. Neves is also a life coach and keynote speaker on leadership and career success, and he has a podcast called The Best Thing. This podcast would be a great companion to this book. In it, per his website, he talks to other people about the best thing to happen to them outside of “the traditional markers of success like getting married, having kids, graduating from college or buying a house.”

Overall, I thought this was a fabulous and important book for anyone to read, no matter how successful or not you feel in life in your public or internet profile. We all need a little something even if it’s just a shift in perspective.

"You can do anything, but you can't do everything"

"It's never too late... BUT... the longer you wait the harder it gets"

I love the no-nonsense self improvement books, and this is one of them. Antonio Neves definitely takes those trite pieces of advice and breaks it down to practical and real-life info.

Had quite a few nuggets of truth that got me thinking and reflecting on my own life and decisions.

Yes, I would recommend this book even to people who don't typically take in self-help or improvement books. Particularly the audiobook. Listening to the author read his book made an impact for me.

This was a great book to read. Antonio tells us about relatable experiences. The exercises throughout the book really helped to reflect on things from the past and what I want in the future. I enjoyed the "stop living on autopilot" mantra. I plan on continuing to remind myself of that fact when I find myself stuck in a rut with little direction of what to do next. I would like to take some time to go through these exercises and use this book in the long term.

I've received a copy from Harmony Books and Rodale Books in exchange for a free and unbiased review.

I bought this book after listening to Antonio Neves on the Today Show one morning while I was getting ready for work. He asked the question about whether my boss would hire me again based on my performance over the last 30 days. He caught my attention. I turned up the volume.
I journaled the suggested self assignments/inventories in this book and learned some things about myself. I will likely refer back to this book multiple times. This is a book you will not regret the time spent reading.

I loved this book! I don't typically read "self-help" books, but found this extremely motivational and it was written in a direct, funny and relatable way. It serves as a reminder that we are the drivers of our own happiness and success, and to follow our own path. Took down lots of motivational quotes and passages, highly recommend!

As this sort of book goes I found this one to be well written, often humorous, and giving down to earth advice. But as the saying goes — Timing is Everything — and a pandemic is probably not the best time to publish a book which often asks the reader to analyze the last 30 days or past year when he’s illustrating one of his points. Worth a read for anyone trying to set a new course.

My main takeaways from the book are reflections and questions I should ask myself more often. The beauty of the book is not how revolutionary or original these things are, many people can probably come up with these concepts on their own.

However, even if we do come up with them we don't act upon them, we continue living our life the same way we did yesterday. The reflections and lessons explored in the book are simple yet life changing if implemented.

Unlike other self-help books where the concepts are a "one size fits all" type, the author doesn't tell you what to do but rather how to reflect and figure out what you need to do.

I strongly recommend the audiobook version, the questions and life stories read out loud have an impact that just can't be replicated by reading it on paper.

For me, the lesson that has struck me deep is "You can do anything, but you can't do everything".

Some really great ideas and guidance. I had to read over a period of days so that I could absorb and process all the suggestions and my thoughts and reactions. I'll have to go back and read again to begin utilizing and practicing the tips and tools. I would recommend to others.

Living in a conflicted, demanding, always-on society, it’s easy to lose track of what we truly want our lives to be, and to coast along, falling prey to temptations and short-term thinking, slowly but steadily drifting away from our most deeply-held values and dreams. I was there. Antonio gave me the language to describe what I was feeling and seeing, the right questions to ask myself about my life, and the tools to change it. This book is powerful and empowering, and you can begin using it right now.

Ever wish you could have a mentor/angel sitting on your shoulder, helping you decide what to worry about and what not to worry about, when to move, when to be calm, how to live, and what's “just living?” Antonio Neves' book could be that angel for you. Thoughtful, funny, full of many useful tools for doing what the title says, and well lived.

Not your typical non-fiction, pick yourself up by your bootstraps (although there is some of that) improve your life book. I found the author’s style was as if he were specifically talking to me. The style is also engaging, humorous and self-deprecating on his own experiences. He doesn’t come across as if he did all the right things, it’s a balance of life experiences and lessons that he’s relaying in the hopes of helping others find the path to the life that they want. Although it took me awhile to read, that’s because I needed to process what he is saying and use the tools provided to examine my thoughts, actions and desires. It’s definitely worth a read. I will go back through the book again and take a harder look at the full complement of questions and formulate a to do list. Thank you to Rodale Books, the author and NetGalley for a review copy of the book. #liveyourbestlife #getitdone #bestmein2021

If you are looking for the perfect book to provide some inspiration to improve your life, this is it! I particularly enjoyed Antonio's openness and willingness to share his own struggles while encouraging the reader to work on themselves at the same time. That made his book so much more relatable and fun to read. I highly recommend this book!

This book is definitely helpful! I've learned so many things, I will keep his Top 5 daily checklist, thanks for that. It did help me visualize the things he wants to point out. The questions at the end of every chapter were VERY helpful!!! They literally helped me realize things I never been aware of. I'd also keep the 5 whys of every "I want..", thanks for that lol. Anyway, this book has a lot of lessons to give. My review lacks 1 star because sometimes in his stories, it lacks closure. I want to know what happens next!!! But he just ends at the climax :// Also, his writing sometimes feels very facebook mom inspirational post or fairytale-ish. I prefer straight-on, real-life, and not-so-metaphorical sayings, which in this book rarely has. Overall, very good book, so helpful especially the questions, and lots of things I learned and will keep!

I saw this book on Overdrive and I was at a low point in my day. I saw the title: Stop Living on Autopilot and it made me stop and look at my life. Am I living on autopilot? I feel like it at some points because I am a stay at home mom with two kids and my husband that depend on me to make this work. Sometimes it feels like I am living Groundhog Day because my days are routine.

A few times I found myself needing to delete a book from my ipod because I needed more space and this book was always on the chopping block ready to be deleted, but I always found a reason not to. I am glad that kept it because in reading this, I found the tools and insights to always be present.

I normally don't do lists when a book tells me to, but I did these lists and it was HARD to think up of 5 things in my life that I was happy without relying on anyone else (like getting married or having kids) my own happiness. A list of 25 things that I want that doesn't rely on others. A list to review my past 30 days.

I recommended this book to my dad and together we are talking about how we can apply this to our lives and it brought up some tough topics to where we both where crying in a coffee shop, but it was a good cry with loving and understanding.

I cannot implore you to read this book! Even if you are thinking, I'm not living on autopilot, please read. Antonio Neves has wonderful insight and reading his work (or listening) is not a chore. You will find yourself laughing and agreeing . If and When he calls you out on what you are doing wrong, it doesn't feel like being attacked, it feels like a friend saying ,"Hey I care about you."
