Let me start by saying this book took me two months to read. Yes it is a 3 volume omnibus but let’s be honest, it’s Pokemon. So then why did it take me so long? BECAUSE THE YELLOW STORY SUCKED SO BAD. Dear God the first half was PAINFUL to read. Yellow is BORING. The only interesting thing is that they are a girl… Yellow’s personality is bland, I hate how she names her Pokémon, and she kept them from evolving for stupid reasons and then they save her sorry butt in the end. Yellow wasn’t the worst part though. The Elite Four was HORRID. Lance was the most annoying antagonist I have ever come across. I appreciated his reasons but he himself was DULL. This is unfortunate because he is actually really cool in the games and card game. It was like pulling teeth to get through it. The GOOD part was the cool Team Rocket and core trainer team up.
Now let’s get to the good parts. Gold is great. His personality is great. I love his skateboard and pool cue. I have to accept that these kids love naming their Pokémon stupid crap but aside from that he is fun. Silver is also mysterious and I’m really enjoying their interactions. There are a lot of little mysteries sprinkled in that are building up. I love the idea of Red and Blue becoming gym leaders, Yellow going to Johto, and whatever Green is up to. I am actually excited to read the next book. Unfortunately I can’t give this volume above a 3/3.5* because of that train wreck of a beginning.
I just love these Pokémon stories. They are so nostalgic but still new. These are completely different than the anime and the games which makes them very interesting.
The first volume in this bind up was a little boring but the second two volumes were fantastic so a great entry overall.
I enjoyed the end of Yellow's story. Then came Gold and Silver and I really wasn't a fan of them...but then at the end the story hooked me in again. I was going to give up with this volume but now I feel the need to continue.
I don't really know how to feel about the Pokémon series yet. I don't like the battle things or the technical Pokémon battle stuff, not my thing. The actual story though is okay. I don't care for Team Rocket and I'm not impressed with making the rival the tsundere bestie of the main character. I keep reading it though because I do like the story, seeing how they make the gym leaders have different backgrounds and we see our old favorite places and characters.
With Yellow and her allies facing off against Lance as he draws near to completing his plan to change the world for everyone we get to see the end of the Elite Four's mischief. After we get to meet stubborn but kind Gold as he discovers the mysterious pokémon thief Silver and takes on a journey to return the pokémon he took. However things are not always what they seem as Gold discovers Silver is working for someone behind the scenes and has some baggage from his past that is yet to catch up. If that is not bad enough some of the trouble coming to both Gold and Silver is more than double as Team Rocket makes a resurgence in the Johto region.
I like that even though the story has switched from the original games of Red, Blue, and Yellow (technically Green in Japan too) to Gold and Silver that certain elements not only connect the two regions but things that resulted from the previous battles are still being resolved as Red attempts to recover from Lorelai's cold treatment and Yellow is still active helping whenever the need arises. As such we not only get new interesting characters but get to see how characters we have already got to love (or for some hate) are doing after the fact even though the majority of the story is centered on Silver and Gold primarily. :)
Yellow's journey to save the Kanto region from the Elite Four finally comes to a close as her teamwork with Red, Blue, and Green finally defeat Lance and watch his "mysterious flying Pokémon" (pretty sure it's Lugia) head toward Johto. And with that, volume seven and the Kanto arc concludes. But don't worry, you'll see them all again soon... really soon.
Anyway, our story shifts to the Johto region and we meet Gold, a young man with a one track mind and an honestly disappointing attitude. I don't like him. He's not heroic like Red, or cool like Blue, or sly like Green, or naïve like Yellow. He's kind of a butt. Heck, his rival Silver is far more interesting if only because he's mysterious. Gold 'borrows' a Cyndaquil from Professor Elm and practically demands that Professor Oak give him a Pokédex.
But, we're only 2 volumes into a 7 volume arc, (and part of volume 9 was about Red, Blue, and Yellow) so who knows what will happen. Again, I'm biased because I love Pokémon.
This omnibus contains volumes 7-9. This series has 29 volumes.
So in this omnibus volume, we have the conclusion to the arc from the last volume. It was good! Interesting, especially having our beloved characters team up with Team Rocket lol. The remainder of this volume started the next arc, Gold and Silver. At first, I was a little mad because I just started to care for the other characters and NOW, you’re switching it up on me?!?! Lol. But, after finishing this volume, I don’t mind Gold and Silver. And the story line is still interesting. The older characters do make a comeback at the end of this volume, so they’re not gone! They just needed to build up Gold and Silver’s story so they can all come together later. I’m looking forward to it!
And one last thing! Aren’t Yellow and Chuchu the cutest?!?! Of course, she had to get her own little Pikachu!!!
It was fine! Not as exciting following Gold as it was Red or Yellow. I comparatively struggled getting through Gold’s story. Just not as clever, crafty, or “how the heck’s he gonna get out of that?!” as the other main characters, nor as endearing. And I don’t quite get why Exbo needs Croconaw to return home. Seems forced. Or why Gold can’t possibly leave Silver alone besides the Croconaw connection. Silver’s hidden backstory is pretty easily figured out I think, but it’s not confirmed yet. Feels predictable. Also, side note, I can’t stand Gold’s nicknames.
Highlight: Togebo being such a friggen bad boy after my heart.
Wrapping up Yellow's adventure and starting the Gold and Silver Adventure, both stories in Pokemon Adventures Collector's Edition Vol 3 are good but are let down by a huge flaw each. For Yellow, the final battle with Lance is ruined by constant asspulls from Lance which reminds you of playing with your friends in primary School and no one wanted to lose, so you made up ways of making yourself invincible. The Gold and Silver adventure is let down by the main "hero" Gold. He's a total jerk and it says something that the Pokemon thief Silver is more likeable. It is good that they didn't make Gold a clone of Red but his characterisation could have been done a lot better.
I can never rank any of these books lower than a 5 fr. This edition contained volumes 7-9 of Pokémon Adventures and I’m loving it. I like that even between generations, the over arching storyline is the same, I wonder if they keep this up through all generations. Yellow quickly became one of my favorite characters in these books and the introductions of Silver and Gold were perfect. I love that they can create such dynamic and interesting protagonists who don’t feel like exact copies of the OG Red.
Extremely creative take on what happened between the first two games, to create a satisfying through line. Only caveat I personally have is that silver is already too deep in his redemption line. While it is tiring having to sit through pokemon 101 again, it is better having a new protagonist than to have Ash Ketchum forget his life’s work. Inspires me to pick up the games again and forge my own story!
First volume had the final of the battle with the elite for and the Kanto region with our favorite characters. But started up the Pokémon Gold and Silver in the Johto region with the new series of Pokémon, new characters and a revamped team rocket. Honestly I enjoy reading these so much because I grew up on everything Pokémon and these are fast and fun to read.
“Make the announcement! We have found a new leader for the Viridian City Gym!”
The third volume of Pokémon Adventures saw a thrilling showdown with Team Rocket and the introduction of generation 2, as well as expending the mythology of Pokémon. This was such a great read!
In this installment, Red's Pikachu shows up alone without Red and is rescued by Yellow, a young Pokemon trainer who can communicate telepathically with Pokemon. Together, they search for Red. Later, we transition to the Johto region where Gold and Silver are rival Pokemon trainers.
Wow!! I enjoyed this so much!! I really liked the switch to Gold and Silver, it felt smooth, and I just love Silver!! The art is wonderful as always, and the story keeps you guessing, I can't wait to read the next one! Would recommend!
A really nice reread. This is the end of the Yellow saga and the start of the Gold/Silver saga which is my favorite arc in the Pokémon Manga universe. Excited to reread the other volumes!
