“Walker weaves a spellbinding tale of heroism and adventure coupled with a touching love story.” – A Reader's Review

Somerled’s parentage was noble, of the Kings of Dublin, the royal house of Argyll and the great Ard Ri, the High Kings of Ireland. But when the Norse invaded Argyll and the Isles, his family’s fortunes fell with those of his people. All hope seemed lost when he rose from the mists of Morvern to rally the Gaels, the Scots and the Irish.

Sweeping across Argyll and the Isles like a fast-moving storm, brilliant in strategy and fearless in battle, Somerled began retaking his ancestral lands, driving away the invaders and freeing the people from the Norse stranglehold. In doing so, he would win the title Somerle Mor, Somerled the Mighty, Lord of Argyll, Kintyre and Lorne and, eventually, Lord of the Isles.

This is the unforgettable story of his path to victory that forged the Kingdom of the Isles and won him the heart of a Norse king’s daughter.

SUMMER WARRIOR is the first instalment in Regan Walker’s THE CLAN DONALD SAGA historical romance series.

Lord Somerled MacGillebride, the new leader of the Gaels in the aftermath of an attack against the MacInnes Clan, and the resulting death of their Chief, must undertake a journey to stop the advance of, and the raping and pillaging by the Norse pirates along the coastal waters of Scotland and the Kingdoms of the Isles. Born of a Norse mother and a Gael father, Somerled, of the royal house of Argyll, Kintyre and Lorne, set about to reclaim his family’s fortune, name and ancestral lands where he will come face to face with his future in the guise of Ragnhild, the Princess of Man, daughter of Olaf the Red, King of Man. But a potential war between England and the Scots is on the horizon, and Lord Somerled had previously pledged his support to King David and the Scots, and with the promise comes the likelihood and implied call to duty.

Meanwhile, Ragnhild Olafsdottir, the Princess of Man, chatelaine and daughter of King Olaf the Red, has fallen for our story line hero but King Olaf has bided his time in offering his daughter’s hand in marriage. With more than one suitor vying for her affection, Ragnhild must abide by her father’s wishes but secretly pines for a man whose duty first is to another king and people. Ragnhild is a beautiful, independent and strong willed female who knows her time with her father’s family may be coming to an end. Hoping to reclaim the lands for his son Prince Henry, King David’s call to arms gathers the Chiefs and clans, many of whom will not survive the war.

SUMMER WARRIOR, inspired by historical accounts, is the fictionalized retelling of Lord Somerled MacGillebride, Ragnhild the Princess of Man, and the war between King David and the Scots. Regan Walker’s world building is beautiful, magical and intricate; lifelike and credible. The romance between Ragnhild and Somerled takes a backseat to the wondrous imagery, yet, the attraction is tangible and unmistakable. A captivating and delightful story SUMMER WARRIOR is a fantasy for the mind.

Somerled is a historical character who is relatively unknown in popular literature, but one who had a significant and lasting influence on the politics and history of Scotland. In Summer Warrior, Regan Walker gives us a portrayal of a young man driven by vision and ambition, but also an empire-builder with a human face.
In the early 12th century, Somerled, son of GilleBride, an Irish Gaelic leader with royal connections, rose to the leadership of the territories of Argyll, Lorne and Kintyre, historically the territories of the Dalriada. The entire area of what is today northern Scotland and Ireland was (and had been) contested and divided among Irish, Scottish and Scandinavian rule for many years, creating a Norse-Gaelic cultural and genealogical continuum. The historical Somerled and his family made marital alliances among many of the ruling houses of the time: Somerled himself married, in 1140, Ragnhild, daughter of Olaf Godredsson, King of Man and the Isles.

It is this period of Somerled’s life, his rise to the Lordship of Kintyre, Argyll and Lorne and his courtship and marriage to Raghnild, that is central to Summer Warrior. Walker weaves the history of the times and the many historical characters involved into the story seamlessly, informing the reader (and sometimes reminding them) of the events and personalities, but not overwhelming them with information. Lots of action and plenty of politics keep the narrative moving forward, while the romance lightens the mood and creates opportunities for Somerled to be seen in a different light.

The alliance between Somerled and Olaf Godredsson cemented by the marriage to Olaf’s daughter would have likely been a pragmatic agreement; such was the role of a king’s daughter. Walker doesn’t gloss over this: Raghnild is aware she is a political prize. But there is no reason to not believe she found Somerled attractive, and he her, and that their marriage was more than a political alliance.

I was also pleased to see that Somerled and others are presented as literate and multi-lingual, an aspect of the early medieval elite that is sometimes ignored. Contact between this far northern world and the rest of Europe (and beyond) brought not only changes in worship and ideas, but changes in material culture through trade.

Eminently readable, Summer Warrior – the title is a translation of the Norse ‘Sumarliði’, likely Somerled’s true name, is both entertaining and informative; a book to be enjoyed.

Summer Warrior begins with Somerled and his followers sailing just off the coast of Man, in route to the Irish Sea. As he gazes towards Man, Somerled sees a beautiful white horse galloping across the hills being ridden by a girl with long red hair. Curious as to who she may be, his cousin, Domnall, identifies her as Ragnhild, the King of Man’s only daughter. Intrigued he may be, Somerled knows that he has nothing to offer and gives the order to sail on.

Ragnhild found such freedom in riding her horse, but knew she needed to get back to the castle, in order to oversee the festivities her father, King Olaf, had planned for their visitors. She knows that her father has spoken with Rognvald Kolsson, a Norse warlord and Earl of Orkney, about a possible marriage to help unite their lands and shore up more support for her homeland. However, she could never see herself married to such a man.

Later that summer, Somerled and his men were camped on the bank of a river when they receive news that the Norse pirates had slain one of their cousins, who happened to be the MacInnes chief. The chief’s followers had heard of Somerled’s skills, not only in battle, but in the way he led his men and wanted to join their forces with his. After passing a test that some thought foolish, the MacInnes did indeed join Somerled and his quest to not only stop the pirates but to regain their ancestral lands and their families’ fortunes.

As Somerled and his men become more and more successful in fighting the Norse invaders, it was inevitable that he be invited by King Olaf to the Isle of Man to discuss the state of their world and to whom he would be loyal to. Somerled and a few of his close advisors were welcomed into the King’s castle, for which they were thankful. However, it was the sight of Princess Ragnhild that made Somerled more than happy to be there. It was a bonus when the King encouraged Somerled to be sure to dance with his daughter. Ragnhild was happy when Somerled asked her for a dance and was more than happy with their conversation.

The next day, Somerled and King Olaf discussed their strategies. Somerled assured his alliance with King Olaf and asked for something in return: the hand of Princes Ragnhild’s in marriage. Somerled knows that he has a lot of work to do in securing his own lands and having enough to offer such a young lady as Ragnhild and ensures King Olaf he will do just that. Even though the King won’t give him a decision and puts him off, Somerled leaves the Isle of Man with more hope than ever.

Summer Warrior is another astounding story by Regan Walker. You are pulled into the world she has flawlessly created from the very beginning. As always, the way Walker effortlessly weaves historical facts into her stories is magical. Somerled and Ragnhild are both very well written. Somerled’s intellect, fierceness and interactions with the other characters in the book draw you in, but it’s his backstory that cements the reader’s endearment. Ragnhild is independent in her thinking and wears her faith like a second skin. The romance between the two if them is palpable and their support and encouragement for each other leaps out at the reader. The secondary characters are well written and will leave you wanting to know more about them. I feel that I always repeat myself when reviewing one of Regan Walker’s stories, but her worldbuilding is unparalleled. You can smell the sea and hear the birds’ calls over the wind as the waves lap at the sides of the longships, as well as hear the clanging swords during the battles. If you’re a fan of the genre, and even if you’re not, you will never go wrong with one of Walker’s tales. Well done, Regan Walker! Very, very well done!

I was gifted this book and was not aware that "Somerled" was a real person at first, but soon I learned that he was responsible for the fierce and well planned fighting that chased the brutal Norse pirates out of the lands once held by his Noble ancestors and the Isles of the Hebrides, Scots and Ireland. His amazing fighting skills and leadership makes him a raising star and gains him the friendship of Kings and villagers alike. Regan Walker brings him to life as a flesh and blood man with a goal that changes life in his Isles forever and wins him the love and fealty of those who live there. The author also weaves in the love story of a beautiful Princess whose own story has made her the most sought of women and he must vie with one very evil Earl who considers her hand already his, even though her father has given no consent to any man as yet. As Somerled sails the Irish sea forcing out the last of the Norsemen, he begins to build his long dreamed of Castles to guard the sea lanes in safety. It is a story that needs telling of a hero not known in our times and how his dreams changed the society of his countrymen and made him a legend in his own time, and of a man in love, and his descendants. A story worth reading....

Before I start my review, I have to take a moment to mention the cover. Isn’t it glorious? I love the image, it’s so striking and the way the colour’s melt into one another really make it stand out. It’s beautiful, I would happily have that frame on my wall.

Summer Warrior is a drastic change from what we are used to from Regan Walker, this is definitely more in the historical fiction category then romance (even though there is a beautiful romance within) and personally speaking this is her very best to date. It’s no secret that I am a big fan of her work, I fell hook line and sinker for her medieval warrior series and have been avidly reading my way through her catalogue since.

It’s a step away from the usual romances for Regan Walker, and we are stepping into a whole new era. I love that there is far more emphasis on Somerled’s story and history of Scotland, it’s a lot grittier than what we are used to from her but that only makes it more engaging and captivating. With history, adventure, romance and drama, this is a riveting and captivating tale.

Set during the 12th Century; Somerled I really loved between Somerled and Ragnhild, a bittersweet love that develops beautifully and naturally. I love that it’s meticulously entwined within the bigger picture, in some ways their blossoming romance takes a back seat and I really liked it, your whole focus is on the intricate and compelling tale before you.

I absolutely loved Somerled (then again those who read my reviews, that will comes as no surprise) he is everything you would want in a hero; brave, clever, valiant, gallant, cunning, charming, extremely handsome and determined. He isn’t the kind of man who will just sit back on his laurels and allow injustice to happen, and he wants to unite the Scottish and the Irish to become a powerful force and in doing so he created the ‘Kingdom of the Isles’. I love his focus, he courageous spirit and deep down that yearning passion which comes to a head when he first sets eyes on a beautiful woman riding through the mist.

What particularly appealed to me about this was the vivid imagery that erupts in your mind as you read, because of the rich and stunning descriptions on each page, it’s beautifully written. The depictions of the setting in each scene is mesmerising – but then I wouldn’t expect anything less from Ms Walker, she has outdone herself and I know that this is one of those books which will be pulled off the shelf again and again.

Summer Warrior is the first book in the brand new; Clan of Donald Saga and what a brilliant introduction, I can tell you for a fact that this is going to be an emotional, gripping and addictive series, one of which I am so looking forward to following. Regan Walker once again enthrals the reader with her compelling and mesmerizing writing, she is a true shining star of the genre.

I love that Summer Warrior of inspired by historical events, I hadn’t heard of the tale of Somerled MacGillebride, the leader of the Gaels and was instantly intrigued and, eager to learn more which is what Regan Walker does to perfection, she has this incredible ability to really pull the reader into her fictionalised world and at the same time you are gaining all the history and knowledge without even realising it, you become fully absorbed into Somerled’s intriguing and intricately woven world.

Summer Warrior is a meticulously researched, beautifully written saga of truth, love and history. A masterclass of historical fiction writing.

A Spellbinding Tale

In Summer Warrior, the first book in the Clan Donald Saga, Walker weaves a spellbinding tale of heroism and adventure coupled with a touching love story.

The backdrop to the tale, encompassing Scottish, Irish, Norse and English history, is an expansive one, worthy of the title saga. For me the writing conjured up vivid images of royal courts, battles and the ever present windswept coast and sea that surrounds the isles.

As with the author’s previous works, the novel is meticulously researched, breathing life into characters and events from history. In this instance it is the little known Somerled, the Summer Warrior of the title, who, through his valiant actions, comes to be crowned Lord of the Isles, a Kingdom independent of his Scottish allies and from the Norse he vanquishes.

There is much in the hero’s character to admire. I enjoyed how Walker portrayed his singlemindedness and his determination to reclaim both his birth right and win the woman he loves. The story illustrates how adroit he was at playing the long game; outsmarting both his enemies and his allies through his skills on the battlefield and his diplomacy, which eventually rewards him with both his title and his heart’s desire. It is a hugely entertaining read that transported me from the present to the twelfth century.

The romance with Ragnhild, daughter of the Norse King of Man, is a sweet one and I enjoyed how Somerled managed to both vanquish his rivals in love and eventually gain her hand. Ragnhild is a strong character and the couple are well matched in outlook and intellect. There are a number of barriers to their courtship and I enjoyed how little by little the couple managed to overcome them, most especially the thrilling conclusion to their courtship.

Highly recommended to readers of historical fiction who enjoy tales redolent with the sagas of old.

Summer Warrior (The Clan Donald Saga Book 1) by Regan Walker is a new and unforgettable saga, of the Donald clan.

Well written and well excuted. This saga will grab your heart from the first page to the last.  The characters are well developed,  charming and engaging.  The storyline is unpredictable,  intriguing,  adventurous and suspenseful.

I loved the hero, Somerled, watching his path to victory from all who tried to destroy him and his siblings' ancestry home. I say, move aside" the storm is coming, to take back what is his. Somerled forged what is known as the Kingdom of the Isles.

While, he's a hard, decisive, and a

brilliant strategist and fearless in battle,  he can also be a kind, gentle, generous,  and lovable warrior.  He wins the heart of a Norse King's daughter, after much work.

Fast paced, intriguing,  with edge of your seat drama.  From the mists of Morvern, Somerled,

gathers both the Scots and the Irish to take back what they had lost. SUMMER WARRIOR is like a fast moving storm sweeping across the Isles. The reader will definitely enjoy Regan Walker's unique,  and vivid details,  and her knowledge of history. She brings together a storm, by the name Somerled. An  unforgettable and heartwarming tale of love, endurance and a compelling story that is worthy of an academy of  awards, with winning characters,  and a storm known as SUMMER WARRIOR.

An enjoyable and satisfying read.  Page turning and a never a dull moment storm that sweeps across your heart as you turn the pages with characters your love. Brilliantly written,  unpredictable and carefully written to entice and beguile the reader. A must read!! Well done,  Regan Walker ❤

Summer Warrior, by Regan Walker takes place in 12th century Scotland. The book tells the tale of Somerled, a man who’s lost virtually everything to invading Vikings. As a man, he refuses to allow circumstances to effect his outlook on life and those of whom he has dominion over. As a leader Somerled is honorable, determined, and skilled in ways that allow him to succeed where others failed. He is a handsome hero, a man of integrity, with strong moral courage and unflinching kindness. He loves without fail and refuses to allow circumstances to derail the relationship he sets his sights on. The love story with Ranghild, the daughter to the King of Man is a relationship that is realistic to the period and builds slowly and sweetly over time. Ms. Walker deftly blends historical fact and characters into a vivid and compelling story that will please readers who enjoy historical fiction. Summer Warrior is the first book of the Clan Donald Saga.

Summer Warrior is a historical adventure. The research for this story is excellent and detailed. The author really delves into the time period and marries research with the ability to weave a unique storyline.
The story begins in summer of 1135 A.D. off the coast of the Isle of Man. Somerled MacGillebride, a noble in the royal house of Argyll whose father and many warriors had been defeated by the Norse pirates, sailed near the Isle of Man on his way home. He spotted a white horse galloping across the plain above him and wondered at the rider. A girl with flaming red hair rode like the wind. His brother told him she was the daughter of King Olaf. He thought her spirit was one to be coveted, but he had lost all his lands and had nothing to offer the king for her hand.
Ragnhild, King Olaf’s daughter rode like the wind, running from the hint of marriage to Rognvald Kolsson, Earl of Orkney. She thought he was an evil man and that he’d murdered or had murdered his cousin to gain the title. He looked at her with lustful looks, and she knew he would ask her father for her hand. Her stepmother had just given birth to a male child and wanted her gone.
Okay, that’s pretty much the set-up, except that Somerled was approached by the MacInnes men after their chief had been slain by Norse pirates. They wanted him to lead them all in driving out the pirates and freeing them from Norse oppression.
This is a well-researched saga of the Clan Donald, its founding and recapturing the isles from the Norse. There are battles, wars, and castle building. The romance is light, with only one stolen kiss, but many thoughts of each other as Somerled gains titles and lands to gain the hand of the princess.
If you enjoy historical period adventures and world building, this is a fantastically bold story. The two are meant for each other, but there are no love scenes of stolen moments or anything like that. The love is chaste and yet fulfilling. The isles are well described, the characters are unique and the conversations realistic. The adventures are fierce and many.

With as much history and legend as romance, this book offers a creative account of the making of a kingdom in what we now call the southern inner Hebrides of western Scotland.

The plot follows the efforts of Somerled, a descendent of the High Kings of Ireland, to unite the clans of Argyll and the Isles into a safe and peaceful self-governing domain. The action ranges from Ireland to the Isle of Man to Skye, and even includes a foray into Northumberland for an historic battle between Scots and English. The author does an excellent job of weaving the multiple year timespan into a readily followable journey through both the history and a romance typical of the period.

The love story of Somerled and Ragnhild, Princess of the Isle of Man, rings true to the times: building slowly over years of occasional meetings and visits, plus persistent negotiation with her father, and contentious dealings with others seeking marriage to the princess. I developed very positive feelings for both Somerled and Ragnhild based on their honor, integrity, morality, and kindness. I especially liked the faithful spirituality of both characters with the interesting aspect of their opposite preferences toward the two differing Christian religious traditions of the period. Of course, my personal appreciation of the Celtic Christian traditions probably influenced my view of this element of the story.

Overall, I loved this book. Regan Walker has a way with giving the reader a history lesson not readily forgotten or ignored. The author's notes provide such great historical information that I like to read them first to enhance my enjoyment of the story. Also, the map provided by Ms. Walker lets the reader track the action which I like to do when the story involves movement from place to place.

I highly recommend this book to readers of historical romance that appreciate a story based on well researched lesser known historical figures and events, and filled with excitement plus devoted commitment to a love and a dream.

This story is a special work of love for this author, as the Clan Donald is from her own heritage and history. This book is so thoroughly and thoughtfully researched, you will be pulled into the pages as you go. Don’t be put off by the historical aspect of this book, this book is a fast paced tale through history and becomes a “can’t put down” book very quickly. This author is a wordsmith, where writing is an art form and weaves a story that leaves you wanting more when you get to the end. The characters are engaging and believable and the world building is second to none.

This author continues her talent of weaving true history into her fiction, so the reader will be learning at the same time. This is easily one of the top books I’ve read this year, and I’m pretty sure it will remain in the top ten all year long.

Summer Warrior is the first book in Regan’s new series. The story of Somerled and Ragnhild is fascinating in many aspects. What’s not to love about those two characters? They’re both stron in their own ways.

With this new book, Regan Walker goes slightly out of her usual historical romances to dig into historical fiction and I absolutely love it. Mind you, what has drawn me to Regan’s books in the first place, when I discovered her, is exactly the way she uses historical facts in all her novels while staying true to the romance genre. But this time, while the romance is still there, the main focus is history and, once again, she masters that genre as well.

Please note that a complimentary copy of this book was given to me by the author and my review is freely given.

This is a fascinating story based on real history and real characters from the 12th century. Though it revolves around the romance of Somerled and Ragnhild, it is so much more than that. Well researched and well written, I was drawn into 12th century Ireland and Scotland and found myself cheering on Somerled as he built a kingdom and won his lady’s heart. The story is wonderfully entertaining, all the more so because of the historical accuracy. The love story of Somerled and Ragnhild is sweet and captivating, building naturally over time. I was rooting for them all the way through! This is my first book by Regan Walker, but it most certainly won’t be my last.

History wrapped in a story form. From Somerled's victory in his first battle to his anticipated meeting with Ragnhild, you are immersed in the Viking life. Rich scenes depicting landscapes, customs, dress, and foods as well as the order of power that was forming at the time, will entrench you in another era and place.
Somerled is true to his promises and integrity and pursues Ragnhild with gentleness. When thwarted by her father, King Olaf, you find he is also a worthy and wily adversary as well.
I love Viking history and found myself turning pages quickly to absorb this very well-written story.

What a wonderful story! It tells of the beginnings of the Macdonalds before they were called Macdonald. Somerled is the main character here and even though I've read a bit about him I've never paid him a lot of attention until now. Of course, this is a novel not a history book but the author has gone to much effort to keep it historically accurate. The characters leap off the page, drawing the reader into an amazing tale of adventure, romance, travel and battles! I could hardly wait to read the next in the series although I hated to see the first end. I think anyone who likes Scottish, Irish and English early medieval history, as well as a compelling story will love this book.

This book is well-written and covers a relatively overlooked historical area: the Isle of Man and the Scottish Isles in the mid-Medieval period. However, it is more of a romance novel than a work of historical fiction. The author admits in her notes at the end of the book that much of that period is shrouded in legend. Thus, it was an empty tableau for her to write upon. She chose a stereotypical romance tale, which is her prerogative. That isn't my dram of Scotch. If it is yours, then you'll really like this book.

Summer Warrior is strong and wonderful. A beautiful love story set against the backdrop of the Scots expelling vikings from their lands. Summer Warrior is a hero tale of 12th century Scotland. Based on actual historic events, it tells the story of Somerled, a Gaelic leader who rises to the occasion after Norse pirates raid his ancestral home. He is a natural born leader, uniting other peoples to fight for a peaceful life. His first wife died giving birth to his son. When he sees Ragnhild, the daughter of the King of Man, he knows he has found the woman for him. Somerled inspires his followers with his integrity and gains the respect of other leader with his bravery and cunning. He builds a kingdom in the Scottish isles and sires a family of leaders with Ragnhild.

Is Summer Warrior romance or historical fiction? That is a critical question. As historical fiction, the book is outstanding. Historical events were deftly woven into a heroic story. The details about ships, weapons, meals, clothing, and more were incredibly rich and brought a lesser-known era of history to life. But as a romance, the book was much less strong. The main element missing was conflict. The hero and heroine were equally as attracted to each other and equally desiring to be together. The only roadblock (and it was small) was gaining her father’s permission. Most of the characters were largely one-sided – the good guys were really good, the bad guys were really bad. So, this review is split – top-notch marks as a piece of historical fiction and moderate marks as a romance.
